One thing to keep in mind about "saying no" to a particular game: it's not necessarily a permanent decision. It may be weeks, months, or years later, but I often rediscover the interest that I originally had in playing a game I dropped. When I find that desire to play again, I jump into it. Some of those games even become my all time favorites

Did this with Horizon Zero Dawn, I love the game and im right about to finish up the DLC but I started playing in early 2023😂 The problem was Hogwarts Legacy dropped so I switched to that which was immediately followed by Tears of the Kingdom and then I switched around and played a bunch of different stuff before coming back to Horizon. I'm still loving every minute of it though!

As someone who has a collection of over 500 video games, I think that patience is key. If you consider calling the video games you own and haven’t played by now a backlog, you‘re already assuming, that it’s work, which is the wrong approach.
Appreciating a title is what it’s all about and, for example, while I had a few Nintendo DS games sitting on my shelf for years, I recently regained the appreciation for this system and played through them in no time.
I could have easily told myself, that I need to play them soon, since I really wanted to own them back then, but I just knew, it’s not the right time.
    Anyway, love your approach!

I think this is a good way to approach it. I consider it my gaming library, games I can play right now without fuss. I buy new games when they come out and just add them to the collection.
What I do to avoid decision paralysis is I use a wheel picker program, and I just add new games to it as I buy it and when I finish a game, I just spin the wheel and see what I get to play. Then I play that until I am either content with it or I beat it. Rinse and repeat.
Also, If I just really want to play a game I just do. I don't let the wheel decide all the time, only when I can't pick a game from my collection.

I wanted to end my backlog, back then. I beat it, as fast as i could after some years, and then it was not funny. I wanted to play something, but didnt have anything to play.
Then i realized, having a backlog, i mean a library with many games i want to play is better, then searching days and weeks for a new game or playing games, i didnt like.
So chill and it should make you happy and not stressing you. Live is stressful enough 🎉

I have ADHD and I've come to peace many years ago with the fact that there are simply some games I own that I will never get around to playing. I've even removed some of them from my library permanently because that's how certain I am that I will never want to play them. Idk, to me it seems simple: if you want to play a game, you will eventually play it. If it was more of an impulse purchase, however, you will likely not want to play it. I much prefer replaying my favorite games, and only occasionally playing a "new" game (new for me).

I did this yesterday, I clicked “hide game” on the games I also just play with friends, or have for when friends stay over (if they get up before me I keep games they like in my Ps5 so they can play whatever) and never on my own. Even cutting the number down by like 10 games felt better.

What I do every end/beginning of the year is make a tiermaker list and categorize my backlog: playing, high priority (~6 games), play soon (~12 games), play after (~24 games), play never. So a similar approach. Now I have a realistic amount of games for that year leaving room for new releases or games I just want to play on a whim as well. The goal is not to complete those games within the year, just to have a nice small selection of games I actually want to play or give a try. The play never games I even could consider selling if I have a physical copy of it.

something this video help me realize is ive bought plenty of games bc they were labeled as "amazing" games and not so much bc they had my interest, and ive often skipped out on buying games i thought id enjoy simply bc i could get 2 "amazing" games at the same price or bc the game wasnt as popular as others, and i think the reason i did this was to avoid buying a bad game and not taking the risk, ive recently bought a couple games that were on sale and was gonna miss out on a game that looked really cool simply bc those games were rated really well and that i could get like 3 games at the price of the game i wanted, since watching this its helped me realize this and im gonna go ahead and buy the game i think looks more enjoyable and buy it

Yeah, I bought RDR2 because everybody talked about how amazing it is, but it looks incredibly boring for me personally and I don't know if I'll play more than an hour of the game in my lifetime, even though I spent $20 on it.
Also, in modern times, with physical collections, you can play a game instantly, without downloading patches, starting up Steam, needing to go online to sign in, etc. etc. and just jump right into a game.
Also modern games are much less engaging and have much more random walking around, which makes the game boring.

dont judge, dont let outside factors influence you. only now exists. like said in the video, play what u want to play. and point of playing is getting a satisfaction out of it. a backlog doesn't actually exist, neither any obligations. when u become free of neurotic thinking patterns of have tos and should 'ves that steer u from outside, u can simply enjoy now, from inside.

Here is how I view it and act on it:
    - I view my games as a collection and library. Not a backlog.
    - I choose multiple games to play at a time, but only one from each genre. One jrpg, one survival horror, one open world, one racing or sports, one platformer or chill cutesy game.
    - I like to also absorb what went into making the game, appreciating the art story, design choices, understanding the industry at that time. Understanding the tech behind the game. It's all just so much fun!
    - only thing I don't force myself to do, or even care about doing is 100% games. No desire to do that for any game. I like finishing main story with a healthy dose of side quests (most) and that's it. On to the next.
    - most importantly I choose the game based on mood. A lot of times, a certain title will just pop into my head and based on instinct, that's what I go with.
Here are the games I'm playing right now:
    Lies of P (PS5)
    Control (PC)
    Resident Evil: Village VR (psvr2)
    Resident Evil 4 [2023] VR (psvr2)
Final Fantasy 3: Pixel Remaster (switch)

Problem is that people use their backlog as a closet they just throw every game they have on and tell themselves they'll beat them all.
I think the first thing about making and beating a backlog is making a "beatable" list. Maybe with 10 games at max is a good start. Something else that helps me a lot is making "thematic" backlog lists, like for example "All Batman Arkham games", "All CRPGs", "All games made by Tim Cain", "The 3D Prince of Persia Trilogy", those are some of mine. The idea is to clear multiple small backlogs and feeling good about it, instead of making one huge backlog with thousands of games and becoming frustrated about it.

  • @rko2016
    @rko2016 2 місяці тому +1

    my techniques:
Give the game an hour or 2, if it doesn't catch your interest or annoy you, just delete.
Worst case scenario you wasted some money, but there's nothing keeping you from coming back later.
its just that having so many options makes it less likely that you have the patience for gritting your teeth through a rough patch.
i deleted hundreds of games, but it freed up my mind and i dont catch myself just scrolling, starting up a random game and booting off after minutes.
most importantly, you'll play things you actually enjoy again when you do find the games that grab you. After possibly years of clearing games like this, you might run out eventually and then you can look through your steam hidden list of whatever and check if something is worth revisiting now you don't have your mind preocupied.

Recently I have started to accept that I just cannot play everything I want to. I don't have the time and even if I did, I don't think I could do it either.
So I have started to rank the games on my "queue". Some have High "priority", some have low and most have medium. Priority is just my representation of how much I want to play the game. And when I finish a game I just look at my High priority games and either pick one or if I am not in the mood for any of them I scroll down to the medium section. Bottom line, I no longer stress over unplayed games, rather I just keep track of them so that when I finish one I am aware of my options and just go with whatever I am in the mood for at that moment. So far it works great.
My OCD brain is happy because I have a comprehensive list. And I am happy because I play whatever the hell I want. :)

I have games in my backlog I don't want to play but I like the idea of playing them. It's like enjoying that period of looking forward to something.
Unplayed games don't bother me. But then I pick games up that I may not play in sales. When I want to play something I make sure it's worth my purchase. So I guess there's little investment, perhaps that's why it does not bother me.
What bugs me actively is art projects I have mapped out but can't get myself to do (for a variety of reasons). That too is a backlog.

I've been better as of late to prevent my backlog from increasing. What I do is if I don't plan on playing the game right away, then I don't buy. This is really easy for PC games, especially on Steam. Back then I'd convince myself to just buy it because of FOMO during sales, but the sales happen so frequently that I can afford to skip a good deal every once in a while because it'll come back on sale. I save money this way too. I’ve noticed that wanting something feels more exciting than actually owning it, because once I get it, I often feel like the urge to enjoy it is already gone. Buying games on a whim rarely ever means you're buying the game when you feel like in the mood to play THAT game.
EDIT: Also one thing I've done is hide games from my steam library, even games people say are amazing. Some games just aren't for me, and seeing less games makes it less overwhelming. If I want to play a game I own, steam will say I own it, and i will just simply unhide the game if I find that I wanna play later.

Which means I've pumped too many hours into games like Helldivers 2 & even beaten games like Suicide Squad & Gotham Knights (this ones pretty fun actually).
So I've still got work to do, but over the last 2.5 years I've beat over 60 games which in my books is a healthy number.

One good tip to keep the overwhelm of numbers down is also being intentional when you're buying our obtaining games.
Is it in your cart because you couldn't pass up the great deal in this sale? Why did you feel like that? Look at all the sales steam has and realise that the game will probably be on sale again later so you don't have to impulse buy it now.
Just because it's a great deal now doesn't mean you have to get it now or that you are actually interested in the game. Just let your cart sit fit at least a night, longer if you're someone who is easily hyped up and impulse buys stuff and come back with one simple question: do I actually want to pay this game? And if yes, how soon, might a better deal come along, what is the max price I want to spend on this title?
This keeps you from inflating your library with stuff you're not 100% interested in to play at some point wedged you get it.
In the same vain: just kick out free titles you're no longer interested in unless that might means you will permanently lose access.
A bit of intentional living never hurt anybody and you from a hoarding problem.

My approach to the backlog is that I pick a game I want to play and just play it. I dont buy hundreds of games because I know Im not gonna play them. Only buy whats on sale and even then double check if I really need it. Right now I have just over a hundred games so cant really justify buying anything new. And playing at least a couple of hours every week so Im making progress. The only thing I planned was what Im gonna play this year just so I dont forget. And if I dont stick to it exactly, who cares.

The best solution is just stop adding new games to your backlogs. I made the mistake of jumping into sales and buying lot of games, some I don't even remember I already owned. So really, let's just stop checking steam sales or PS sales and just buy that one game that we really want

I'm not intending to complete my backlog. I like to keep there as a kind of 'assurance' that I'll always have something new available to play when I feel the need. Everything in my backlog was some kind of super cheap bargain. It serves to protect me from accidentally paying full price for a game on a whim.

Adult + maybe 1-2hrs available + can afford anything gaming you want + endless potential library + community hype over games = I will just take my time, not stress about unfinished games (see my unfinished projects IRL). I will just sample everything until something pulls me in to really dedicated to it-- Trials Mana has that place for me. I do have some artificial time restraints such as it goes off of the subscription service in 4 days!

There definitely isn’t one way to decide which games to play.
    My style is
    - to not have a backlog
    - to have other hobbies - books, movies, exercise, home improvement, taking online courses, etc
I’m very much an “in the moment” person where I might plan to play a series, like Mass Effect LE on January, finish the 1st game, and that’s it for a few months until I get the urge to resume the series.
Since then, I’ve read several books, improved several areas in my home, and started an online course to prepare to get a better job.
I’m actually thinking about starting ME 2 soon, so books and studying might go on pause for a bit.
Maybe this could be called the balanced approach to the backlog. idk. But a video that looked at multiple approaches vs a single one might do well on your channel .

I look at a “backlog” as a cornucopia of choice. I will never run out of exciting games to play. It’s a pretty darn good problem to have. This video made me realize I’ve already reached this point when I left social media and stopped watching game reviews and walkthroughs and focused on one game at a time. There was a time when I began starting games and then jumping between them which was a fun break. I feel it’s good to have that discipline and balance your time but it’s ok to cut yourself some slack and try out new things every once in a while.
One problem I have now though. How do you balance content creation with videogames? You said you took a step back and that alleviated it and are now back to content creation. Do you still feel the same way when you left and if not, why? How did you come to that?

    • @backlogbaldie
      @backlogbaldie  5 місяців тому +1

Excellent questions! I am still very passionate about content creation, but having a life and a full time job are very hard things to balance with it. I often finish games well in advance of them featuring in videos. I write scripts on public transport, and I work on videos for a few hours at a time where I can (I set timers so I don’t overdo it and burn out) around all my other obligations. There are other factors too. Like I had two weeks leave in April and that let me smash through a huge chunk of backlog games, but equally my day job becomes insane over the summer so my creation schedule will slow down these next few months because I just won’t have the energy.
UA-cam is easily the hardest thing I have ever done, but I really enjoy it, and I think that’s the secret. If you love what you do, you’ll find a way.

@@backlogbaldie Writing scripts ahead of time sounds good. I thought I felt lazy for having them sit there. Do you think your opinion changes or you don’t remember/feel the same enthusiasm for a topic in an already written script? That’s a worry of mine.

  • @neonGliiitch

This was a good video. I like to look at my games as a library of games I can play from and I just play from them and enjoy the experience.
I use one of those online wheels and I have added all my games to it, and when I buy a new game it gets added to the list.
I start a game and play it until I feel satisfied. This could mean 100% it, it could mean just finish it until credits roll, it could mean sinking 100 hours into and getting bored, or it could even mean trying it and deciding I didn't like it.
Once I am done with a game I either pick a game I really want to play if there's one I am dying to play (usually a newer game) or if I am having trouble deciding I just roll the wheel and let it pick a random game from my library. I don't get bogged down in making a decision, I don't see it as things I NEED to do. I just play games and have fun.
Once I am doing with the game I take it off the list and it goes into one of two categories.
1 Games I can never see myself playing again. These are games I usually dislike or they are like a linear RPG that I know I won't enjoy playing again.
2 Games that I could see myself playing again such as a long-term game like World of Warcraft, or Sims 4, or Call of Duty. Or on the super rare occasion a single player game that I really liked. These are games that sometimes I just feel like going back to and playing and if I do, then I just take a break from the library of games I have and enjoy myself for a little while.

Disagree with the 'play at least an hour'. For games with long intros (e.g. your example of MGSV) sure. But for the majority of games? The intro is very similar to the rest of the game and no point forcing yourself to play a game.

The main problem i think everyone has is that we rush subconsciously through the games to get to the next one, especially trophy/achievement hunters
Add in guides that practically makes the games played for you those 2 coupled together can make the hobby a job
Being a true completionist sounds awful for some people but it makes "DESTROYING" my backlog a nice slow progress id rather spend 50 hours on one game than 10 tedious hours on 5 games

Doing the same for the next few days with the ones I have left. I also find it helpful to set a small goal, like my goal for Oct is to finish 4 games (any 4, length regardless) - I’m self employed and also create business plans and communication plans for entire businesses so I enjoy organising anyway lol - if you don’t like this it could be a bit hellish.

I would like to have a more relax relationship with the games I am or am not playing. But it really has become a bit complicated. I really like persona 4 golden. So I wanted to play arena and ultimate arena. Arena is badly pace, but have a good story. It was fun to see persona 3 and 4 characters interacting and also seeing aged versions of persona 3. But I don't do well with visual novels so it was painful to get through Arena. But I did it and I was happy I did it, because Ultimate arena is a direct continuation and so much better paced! It was mainly a great time.
But the experience with those two games made it harder to let go of playing some other slower paced games. Because I will always consider if I might have a great time when it is over. Conclusion = it is hard. But I am always joggling my wish to finish games and this weird almost depressive uninterest in the games I own, so it is not making it easier. I often just end up replay games or get into a game but then stop playing for one reason or another, but still walking around not knowing if I want to drop the game or not. FOMO is a pain.

    • @backlogbaldie
      @backlogbaldie  4 місяці тому +1

Kinda know what you mean. Persona 5 took me 3 months to finish my first time (I kept taking breaks and finishing entire other games) but because I know it was worth it, I give other games like that more patience than I would have before.
My advice for the fomo is uninstall the game, give yourself a week, then see if you still want to play it. If you just want to know how it ends, UA-cam game movies do the trick for me.
      Hope this helps.
