  • I have never grown mushrooms before. This is an experiment I invite you to join. I want this to be an active group learning experience. One of the first step to growing mushrooms is harvesting spores. We start with the White Button mushroom and the Baby Bella mushrooms. I will show you my learning curve through all the steps of grow mushrooms indoors.

    Well, Gary, you have answered my question before I have had the opportunity to ask it again. Mushrooms are one if not the best source of protein for a vegan food plan. Thank you for sharing your experiment here. I have been trying to do a lot of research on this subject and there is not a huge selection of youtube videos on spore collecting. I have grown bellas from the grow at home box kits before and the taste of fresh mushrooms is amazing compared to store bought. This peaked my curiosity about spore collecting. The box kits can be very expensive and sometimes you get a box that doesn't produce much. Spore collecting seems like fun and a lot cheaper even if the results aren't as fruitful.

    Any problem with spores contamination? I think aluminum foil is better, you can quickly immerse it in boiling water to kill bacteria before collecting spores, then use steriluzed syringes with Mineral water to collect your spores.

    1. Exposing the spores-YES. Not necessary with all species. 2. You SHOULD sanitize hands or wear gloves. If you intend to use these spores to cultivate you DO NOT want them contaminated 3. 6 hrs is NOT long enough to get a good spore deposit. The specimen should be covered. 4. DO NOT use paper for a spore deposit; card stock is okay, but foil is BEST simply because paper is manufacture with chemicals that can affect the viability of your spores. 5 In the case your buttons place on the foil and then slip into a paper (not plastic) bag-why? Humidity will build up. You want the spores to dry and DO NOT want excess water all over them.

    • @FearOfaBlackChannel
      @FearOfaBlackChannel 8 років тому +11

      If you want to cultivate, it may be best for you to try 2 or 3 other things besides collecting spores, that are much more efficient. 1. Cloning. This is very easy. Simply slice into the stem to expose the innertissue of the specimen and scrape some material off. This is then swabbed onto an agar plate OR dropped into sterilized grain. 2. My own method is to make LC (Liquid Culture). Sterilize distilled water & (white) karo syrup solution. If you have spores scrape some into the solution or drop some tissue from a specimen into the solution. IN about 2 weeks you will have enough culture to grow as much as you want. Be sure however that you have made an injection port on the lid of the jar you are using in order to pull the spores.

Here's to hoping! :) I've also noticed in these video's that mushroom spawn is highly susceptible to contamination and that you should always wash your hands and any surfaces that come in contact with the substrate and spores using Isopropal alcohol. Good luck Gary! Following...

      Gary Pilarchik. I did a lot of research on it last night. Looking forward to how you will inoculate. I think I will use the syringe method and inoculate compost. I'll do a video on the process. Hopefully one of us can get a mushroom! I'm kind of stoked to try it. The worst that will happen is nothing and I'm okay with that!

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  9 років тому

      Indoor Hydroponix I ordered some inoculated grain. That will grow in some sterilized hay and coco coir when I get to it. And I did some sliced white button mushrooms in compost and some spore strips in compost. First I want to see if minimal prep and no over the top sterilization can get mushrooms going. Then I am going to work toward the more proper methods.

    • @IndoorHydroponix
      @IndoorHydroponix 9 років тому

      Gary Pilarchik. Yeah the sterilization seems a bit intense. But I suppose its necessary so the bad bacteria doesn't spoil to spores. My goal in this will be to grow mushrooms without buying the spores or a kit. I think perfecting the grocery store mushroom grow would be awesome!!!

    • @infringinator
      @infringinator 9 років тому

      Gary Pilarchik I'm thinking you should research how to do this outdoors. Since our spring starts around May you should know enough by then to start a new batch. The outdoor method would reduce your worries about contamination also...which scares me knowing all those molds are in the air we breath inside a house!

  • @russellrfox
    @russellrfox 4 роки тому

    you should use coco coir it doesn't smell bad and it is more forgiving with sanitizing the substrate.

    • @jackieflynn7731
      @jackieflynn7731 9 років тому

      Gary Pilarchik I prefer to do it on my own then to buy it from anyone. Why not as its a good experiment. We should all grow our own to support the families and the local community. I am not into buying veg etc from big corporations. We need to keep the local farmers going and support them.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

    is it ok to moisten the paper first then let the mushroom sit and put a cup or something over it? i thought it would keep it a bit more moist and the spores would stick better.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

      Im experimenting and learning so I dont have this down yet. But I wouldnt moisten the paper towel as it will allow other molds and fungus to grow. Youre just capturing spores that can sit without moisture.

    anybody know what grains you can innoculate with Portobello spores? I'd like to grow my own, but the temps here in Florida are too hot to fruit and Id have to grow indoors, and as you could guess I'd prefer not to bring large amounts of manure into my house. I could also add broken down straw to whatever grains would be suitable.

      You can use coir with a little bit of used coffee grounds instead of manure. That's what I'm doing for the same reason - don't want manure in the house and don't want to have to sterilize manure on my stove (gross).

    You can produce stronger strains from spore prints, like seeds, but its easier to get contamination. If you break the mushroom in half and take center flesh with a sterile knife you will have less contamination, but it will be a clone so over time the strain may become weaker.

      That's what I was thinking... I mean, spore printing is literally collecting the spores... I was thinking, setting it on paper doesn't magically create spores, so, as long as the spores get into the substrate one way or another, it should be the same....

    I’ve been reading the comments but I don’t understand why it’s so important to avoid contamination. Isn’t it like sowing plant seeds in that you just need to pull out the weeds? Surely mushrooms have survived millions of years without clean substrate?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  5 років тому

      There substrate usually doesnt have a mix of good and bad microbes like in the earth. So if some bad mold starts growing it usually gets out of control. There isnt anything to stop it and it has perfect growing conditions.

      The gills are under the mushroom. That is where the spores fall from. If you put them face/ gill down the spore fall to the paper and leave a print.
      The print is actually made from spores.
      Now I am experimenting. So those spores have to go in a substrate or growing medium which I made on the second video. However it can take 4-6 weeks for the spores to do their thing and grow mycelium. That is what I am waiting to happen.
      Total new experiment for me. Oh you scrape of the spores from the paper or cut them into thin strips and put them in the substrate.

    • @sumip90x
      @sumip90x 9 років тому +1

      Gary the problem your going to have is contamination. Because your spore print is not sterile your manure substrate will cause contam. What you might have to is use your spore prints and try to make a liquid culture then dump the liquid culture in to your manure substrate. Also you will have to pasteurize the substrate before adding the spores. I haven't grown myself - but do have a portabella experiment outdoors. I am patiently waiting to see if i get portabellas. Look up liquid culture. Good luck! I am rooting for ya! :) I had portabella's show up as volunteers but that was a total fluke.

      Yeah even if you get the spores to germinate in a liquid culture that doesn't mean your out of the woods.. Then trying to isolate a strain that's actually produces is the next challenge. I am also going to cloning route. I just picked up a big portabella yesterday and trying some experiments to see if i can get a culture started. Oysters on the other hand.. no problemo.. That's easy. I give Gary credit :) this is no easy experiment.

    Those are dangerous to grow. Hard to identify. I recommend you get good at identification before growing and grow favorable mushrooms. Look at my channel. And I'd read alot more. Look alikes can mimic other mushrooms and kill you . Happens all the time to pickers and growers.

    Atrocious video. spores are germinated on agar and prints taken under STERILE conditions, NOT OPEN AIR. you could have found stem butts of agaricus bisporus with live mycelium and used those to colonize a suitable media. your moisture rate is not the biggest issue, it is mostly air permeability and poor viability of tissue culture, i.e. inaccurate methods. Effectively your stuff died out because of "root rot" (mycelium need to breath just like a vegetable root that cant stand waterlogging) and poor material viability. cultivation is not hard per se but the devil is in the details; one wrong and welcome to contamination or more likely, zero growth.

      no you don't see anything. Nowhere in the title of your time wasting and possibly misleading craptastic video do you mention failure, inaccuracy of technique, or that no one should follow even 1 iota of any of what you did. after you failed to germinate any spores in your error-riddled nonsensical attempt, you should have either removed the video or amended your title. There is too much bad cultivation information out there and as a cultivator I am sure you get frustrated by it yourself. The myco community does not need any more crap info being spread that confuses or deters new growers. no one cares that you made a ton of popular videos for new growers of vegetables; these videos are BAD and will deter a ton of new mushroom growers after they fail miserably. Why are you even on here pretending to be an expert when you can't even consult basic cultivation techs??????? wouldn't you attempt to understand the way any of it works or how others do it before pretending to teach others? I am getting VERY sick of seeing amateurs mis-instruct.

      Wow, harsh! Guess it was too difficult to make your point in a kinder fashion? As a cultivator myself, I can use my own discernment when looking for info online and always appreciate kindness amongst my fellow cultivators and human beings. There's enough unnecessary rudeness as it is. Sheesh

      I note you have not posted any videos on how to do it ! The presenter made it clear he had never done this before and he has invited comments and also for other people to "learn together with him" . He never said he was an expert. It is clear the presenter was trying to help others. It is good that you contribute and point out any errors made but you could do so in a more polite manner.
