I left Swift about the same time as you. Working out of Phoenix, they had me running Nv, Ca.and Az. Your description about covers it, self centered AH’s. Perfect example; First morning at Driver Training (Orientation) Swift to provide shuttle from hotel and breakfast will be provided @ 7 am. Reality..no shuttle, no breakfast. In the end, a $600 check was the last straw, I put in for a wk of home time, 3 wks later returned to the terminal 2 days late, cleaned out the truck and headed home to Flag. When my DL called to establish my returning time…I FN unloaded on him. Just Facts! Two days later, I’m working for a Plumbing Co. I really enjoyed driving, just me and my Frenchie. Anyhow, watching your channel brought it all back..Thanks for what you do!,

i have been driving for 8 years in that time i have realized that never work for a company where the owner is not involved. if you have issues the worker or dispatchers do not care if you work quit they get payed regardless. when the owner is involved he cares because if the truck gets parked for a few weeks he is loosing money.

The choices you make are right. Just keep a weathered eye. All companies roll the red carpet, and you won't get a feel for the companies direction until you start to work. I drive for Prime, I have several trucks and others outside (double dip). The fleet manager at a mega carrier will make you or break you. You can also make or break yourself. A lot of people come into this industry and don't understand it or think they are going to get rich. This is a lifestyle and a choice. Some weeks or months, you kill it, and you have a bad week or weeks, then you start to question. Like I tell my students, no matter the goal, keep an eye on the objective you are trying to complete, with a mega carrier or on your own.

mega carriers are good to start with and the fleet manager thing is some are cool and some you cant figure out how to get on theire good side , but they come and go and if u dont think your fleet manager likes or looks out for it might not be you , its them , but they come and go , so the next 1 may feel like a old freind while the current 1 not so much, i just run hard and never complain about loads because as a company guy i dont think it will get u anywhere , just truck and save money and do it right and at about 5 years in you should have enough money to easily go owner op if thast what u want or look for that gravy job with more home time

Last day my DL said you cant go home just sit the whole day and wait then go home or we won’t pay you the guaranteed pay we have been paying you. I said alright bet, i went home cleared my truck and told them you know where the truck is come get it 😂. Called my new company told them I’m ready to join was in orientation Monday and had a load Thursday.😂

The trucking industry saw a significant employment decline in February 2023, losing 8,500 jobs per the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The 8,500 trucking jobs loss can also be contracted work as well. Some carriers are moving freight for $1.65 per mile. That leaves these carriers with no profit. Times are difficult for truck drivers these days. Thank you for sharing your story. We love your channel.

Hi Nia. I wish there was a way to communicate like over the phone so I could tell you all the do's and don'ts about some of these mega carriers. I'm an OTR driver for a smaller company out of Chicago now a lot of people say the Chicago companies are bad but you got to find the right one that works for you. I'm making the most money here at this company than I have it any other company since 2001. I also was a lease operator at KLLM for 3 years. I've never worked with swift but that was wrong for them to sit you for two weeks. SMH.. Also, I follow you're channel because I like to network with other drivers and share information and help each other out here. Even though we work for different companies, we are a team/ bro, sisterhood. We have to look out for one another. Also to make professional relationships with each other. If you have any questions about anything. I'll be happy to answer. Keep up the awesome work. Take care and be safe out there on them crazy roads.

Swift has a reputation for sure. When I started driving 25 years ago, there was a story about how one of their drivers died in one of their trucks in the Phoenix terminal and nobody noticed until the body started smelling. They apparently just cleaned it out, replaced the mattress and reassigned it to a new driver. I’m glad I never had to work for a mega carrier, screw that. I’ve only worked for small companies and been local for the last 20 years. No way would I go back OTR

  • @FanTum340
    @FanTum340 Рік тому +7

I have a similar story to this with Swift. I was trying to get a solid year with the company. During my first 8 months with the company I was moving, and towards month 9 I was sitting down for 5 days. Mind you, everyone else on my account was moving and I was the only truck sitting. I made multiple calls and received wishy-washy communication about freight being “low”. Your video confirmed my suspicion of the company weeding out drivers. It’s cheaper for the company to hire new drivers versus keeping old ones. Instead of firing you, they would have you sit for days which then makes you look for other trucking opportunities. It’s disguised in a way to have you voluntarily leave to make room for the new drivers who get paid little to nothing at all.

I was pre hired by Swift back in 1998 as a driver. Fortunate for me I got hired as a diesel mechanic and 30+ years later I am retired. As another commenter said mostly likely your terminal probably had a master key that fits all of the freightliners at that terminal. As far as moving BO (bad order) trailers, hell to the naw! The should of called road service or sent a mobile mechanic there to fix those trailers. I worked at mega carriers and we did it all the time....

Reason I left the DSG account after 21 months was because about 1 year ago today they changed onsite leaders and planners. My miles went from avg 2,300-2,700 to 1,600. I would spend 2 to 3 days at the Decatur terminal just sitting and had enough so I put my 2 weeks notice. I went with Maverick and turned out to be worse than swift lol after 5 weeks they moved me to another account I didn't signed up for. 65 hours a week and netting 850$ doing local flatbed work is just not right so quit on them. Tired of trucking companies selling me lies. I'm glad that you left Swift and are happy about your next job I hope they value and appreciate you wish you the best driver keep them wheels rollin 😎

I know this vid is 2-3 months old but keep in mind, understandably, giving a 2 week notice is the honorable thing to do. BUT, when it comes to the trucking industry, giving 2 weeks notice can “sometimes” hurt you. Prior to giving your notice (in trucking), always make sure you have another job or company lined up that has already given you the go ahead to come on board. I say that because once the notice is given, they can then either tell you “Well you can leave now,” stop giving you loads since you’re leaving anyway, “some” may hold checks, or they send you somewhere far out and say they can’t get you back before your end date to turn your truck in. Also, IF there was a maintenance shop at the Swift, Decatur yard, the maintenance shop has keys to every truck or a master key for all their trucks and they were more than likely told by your DM that you were quitting and that your truck was there and they wanted them to “secure” your truck so you don’t do any damage to it before you turned it in. It’s how companies think. Keep truckin.’

Freights rough out here I own my truck contracted to swift and lots of sitting but dat load board data doesn’t look better for that market. Only reason I’m still here is my dm in Syracuse. Pretty sure I met u at Atlanta with your dog in the driver lounge awhile back I think u it was when u had been with swift a month or 2.

I was with swift for seven years. Did a lot of sitting and a lot of bs loads. I was at the columbus terminal for five days when my dm called and asked if i was ok. I asked why have i been here for five days and no load. He said he was calling to find out if i was ready to roll. After five days? How about day one. He had me off the board for five days. Left after seven years at .45/m. Came to Prime on the lease side and it cant compare. No sitting unless its by choice or we're slow with freight. I dont need to be moving all the time with lease but they can keep me going so much better than swift ever did. I was based out of laredo which was probably one of the best terminals for freight bc we had loads from MX going all over the US. Im not surprised how it ended for you there and that really sucks. They couldnt be responsible enough to at least let you know they were going to move the truck and where its at and lock it up for you? Wow blows my mind. And for the lady to tell you she cant locate the truck so you can get ur stuff is just stupid. Why lie at that point? So what's ur pay now? Are you still on cpm or percentage %?

I started in 2012 with werner and they are no different. They tried to give us a truck with over 500,000 miles on it for a team truck and said they would get us into a new truck, but we knew that wasn't going to happen so we declined the truck. Ended up get a truck recovery for a newer one but still had almost 400,000 on it.

Jeeeeesus .47/mile? I didn’t know people still drove for that low!
My advice is look into hauling other freight other than dry van. Also percentage usually pays better than cpm!
I went from flatbed OTR to step deck OTR now I haul equipment locally on landoll and getting promoted to RGN hopefully next step after that is heavy haul. I make anywhere from 1.5-2k a week and home every night.
Obviously that route is for people who are okay with breaking a sweat and getting dirty. Looking into pulling tankers, heard thats very good pay and not as much work as like flatbed. I heard even reefer rates are good at the moment if you wanna stick with van.
