    When I was younger, my mom had industrial plastic covers on the living room and dining room furniture. She kept it on her furniture for 30 years! I finally convinced her to remove the plastic! The plastic had turned yellow, but her furniture looked brand new! It felt so good not to have that cracking plastic stick to my back thighs when I would go over her house.

    Mini blinds! I had them about 40 years ago on the windows flanking my bed. My cat used to sit on the nightstand and rake her paw up and down the blinds to wake me in the morning. I will never forget that godawful noise!

      Are these the same as Venetian blinds? They seem to come and go over different periods.

    • @Grannynan
      @Grannynan 3 роки тому +2

      Mini blinds are similar to venetian blinds, but they are 1 inch wide slats made of vinyl or painted aluminum. They were popular in the 1980s and 90s. Now I have wider wooden blinds with straight drapes at the sides. I made my drapes to coordinate with the blinds...much better.

    I used to live with my 90 year old grandmother and she had a recliner. It really helped her with mobility issues. She could press a button to help her get up and press another button to lay back comfortably. It was super ugly, but other than it's practical use it was the most comfortable chair in the house! 😩

    I love to look back on old magazines, 50's and 60's and the nostalgia is just so thick and heavy when I see the pictures. I grew up with Mid century modern furniture and now it's making a comeback with a twist of color and design.

    If you decide to add wallpaper, for the sake of all that's Holy, make sure the surface you are putting it on is appropriately primed/painted.
    Wallpaper applied to bare drywall CANNOT ever be removed without damaging the drywall underneath. Eight remodels later, I've learned to just pull it down asap.

    Garrett, I agree with you about mini-blinds, they suck. But, I’m old enough to remember what mini-blinds replaced: nothing! Taped-up Brown paper or newspaper, or bed sheets held up by thumb tacks. Cheap rental units were improved by mini-blinds, and they were cheap enough for most stingy landlords.

    I have always hated the bulky look of recliners! My husband of almost 40 years had always wanted a recliner but I resisted until last year when we bought two “Stressless” recliners that are of Scandinavian design. They are incredibly comfortable and work well with my Transitional design style. I kept all the upholstered furniture in the room the same cream color and it works for now. When you get close to 60 years old you deserve less stress! (The recliners are a cream color in leather and they are very “un-bulky”...)

    Someone’s style is very personal, and we have no idea what a person’s circumstances dictate for them. I have a really pretty sofa that’s horribly uncomfortable, so won’t make that mistake again! I also have some distressed pieces of furniture and a few beautiful antique pieces handed down from family. I’d say my style is eclectic. If you visit to see spend time with me that’s great! If you visit to see how I decorate and tell me what’s wrong, please just stay home!!!!

    Oh gosh I so agree, Valances are so 80's...unless you need that color up there to bring a formal room structure with high quality fabric boxes, I love full length curtains, and I love when they just touch the floor and rest there so pretty. I especially adore velvet, voile, organza with a beautiful geometric pattern or the more modern Moroccan looking lace knits and some high end European laces. Valances may serve a purpose in a laundry room or a kitchen window where you want to look out but you could also do a sheer that you could open if needed.

    I’ve learned that the more trendy your design - the worse it will look down the road. I worked at a paint and wallpaper store years ago when hunter green and burgundy were very popular. I cannot stand hunter green and burgundy to this day.
    We sold some BEAUTIFUL wallpaper that would still work today.
    And we sold some of the ugliest wallpaper you can imagine - some people just have bad taste. Lol These geometric wallpapers, tile floors, and emerald green color that is popular worry me. They will look dated very quickly.

      I found on Wayfair, a recliner that was a very near twin to my small upholstered, skirted rocker, was listed in the nursery section (i.e. it is small) of furniture made by Klaussner. So now I have 2 small navy blue, soft, (near twins) upholstered rockers in my living room, one of them just reclines! I am 4'11". I hate big upholstered stuff! My living room is only 18 x 19 feet, with a fireplace taking out a chunk and now a mahagany desk as it is also my office.
      My 2 rockers stay as well as my upholstered box valance over my sheer grommeted curtains. I love the soft rolls of pinch pleats, but hate messing with installing traverse rods. Grommets are wonderful. No big swags & jabots with tassels as a valance.

    Recently I had the pleasure of removing a wallpaper border in my mom's house. It was actually pasted on some type of board and nailed to the wall surrounding her living room, and it had been there for about 15-20 years. She let me redo the whole room, and it made me so happy to burn that border along with the weird rail things she glued to her kitchen cabinets. Now I just need to get her to part with the red corduroy double recliner.

      I need to hire you…the previous homeowner of our new 1926 craftsman bordered every single room, except the two bedrooms that are wood paneling (they have to go too…)…but I’m overwhelmed just by the borders. I almost feel bad because she even stated during closing she would miss the borders she worked so hard on. My 73 year old mother even thought it was overdone.

    I never liked recliners either. I had back and neck issues starting in my 20’s and went shopping for a good quality chair and found one that suited me as I do a lot of reading. It was a leather wingback and I still love it 30 years later. My husband wanted a recliner but I find it awkward to watch TV in and prefer the versatility of a sofa or comfortable chair.

    I hate the look of my recliner too but as the other person said, it is the most comfortable chair in the house. My dogs love to snuggle and rock with me in it so I guess I will just say I’m the one who has to live here and look at it. Garrett I would like you to know that I so appreciate your approach as you educate us about design. I also would like to see alternatives that arent too expensive. Especially for the mini blinds and verticals in front of a patio door. For barn doors I would like to see barn doors that look more modern and not so barny. For example, I'd like to have a sliding door that I could use to close off my galley kitchen that is suitable for a wall garden of herbs - maybe slats that would look good with or without the plants.

    • @blondienhouston4825
      @blondienhouston4825 2 роки тому +2

      I have seen doors that are similar design to our ugly barn doors, with outside mount (instead of a pocket door,) with a wood valance across the top concealing the ugy mounting hardware. Less expensive than having a carpenter open up the wall to carve out space for a pocket door, but not with the barn vibe!

    I agree with everything. The only thing I would add to the list is the fabric upholstery protectors that you get when you buy a new sofa or chair. They always look awful, never cover the arms correctly, just poof up. I throw them away or carry in my purse to match drapes, pillows, etc.

    Personally I don't hate barn doors, I like it when it is used appropriately, but I feel like they lack the privacy that is needed, especially how it is conveniently used in front of the bathrooms. In the cottage I live, we renovated the bathroom space to meet in the tiny hallway yet was lucky to have the right space to put in a pocket door to save the space in the hallway and bathroom. The pocket door has privacy and I'm not worried it will come off the track like barn doors can.

    New scriber here. Oh my goodness! you hit my biggest pet peeves on the head. Thank you so much. This video was very satisfying. Boarder paper. UGH When I was looking to buy a home I would just move on if I saw boarder paper. The house should be free if it has boarder paper. And who has a room large enough to even fit an entire bedroom set. I think\hope the sets are made so we can pick and choose which pieces work for us. Did buy a home that was mostly left in the 80's with gold metal mini blinds through out. Price was great and no boarder paper. Beautiful custom made drapes in the bedroom. No valances, ruffles or unnecessary add ons. Bit by bit I took the blinds down. I had to do it in bits as I could only fit so many in the trash bin each week. Thirteen windows worth. And I could count on being very happy each week. Did check recycling and none was to be found. Ok, so not a fan of a recliner and I inherited a new sofa. Still had the tags on. Nice style for me. What I never noticed, until someone told me, was that it had zero clearance recliners at each end. I'm ok with it, as you cannot tell just looking at it. My current home is 950 sq ft. so wheeling out the tv to watch a movie by the fire in my hidden recliner is fine. No one has to know.

    LOL! I think I have all of this in my house. I know, I know. I've lived here a year, and I'm going room by room and cannot renovate fast enough. I've ignored the main living spaces because that's getting a major demolition and start over, so I haven't touched it. Popcorn ceilings, valance, mini blinds, vertical blinds, I have a faux distressed piece I picked up cheap at a thrift store...it lives in the garage. And I am desperately trying to convince my husband that the recliner is so so tacky in all it's cheap faux leather slouchy blobbiness, but its not working. Maybe I can work it into his office somehow? Meanwhile I'm trying to find something with a bit more eye appeal for when I get to the living room. I know, I'm commenting on an old video and you'll never see it. Oh well. Love your work!

The lamps have those oval shaped crystal baubles hanging from them. The furniture has that velvetish-velour covering which is French provincial kind of(also very 70's, which is when she last decorated) covering, which I think with the right window dressing and lamps, I can make work. And I'm about to build and install a wooden valance above my patio door XD But it's not for design, I'm fine with just a curtain rod (took down the vertical blinds the place came with), it's going to be a cat run to get them from one side of the room to the other! But Garrett would also hate the cat shelves on either side, and the cat tree right in front of the window. And I just put in newer ceiling fans (with enclosed LED lights rather than the bulbs the ones from the 80's had) that really do help keep the AC costs down, even in KS. Just need to add a recliner and I'd have a place that would make Garrett explode XD.
