A great, risk-taking conductor and an inspired eccentric; I think Beethoven would have got on well with him. A pleasure to see him taking this meretricious piece of occasional rubbish seriously and actually making it work. I shall treasure this.
INTERESSANTE personaggio considerando che si e' fatto la conoscenza musicale tutta da solo ,molto all'avanguardia musicalmente con le prime di Schoenberg,Berg,Webern,Roussel Dallapiccola ,Dessau ,di cui avendo musicalmente una conoscenza accademica non li apprezzo quanto meritano a parte qualche cosa di Schoenberg e Roussel ,molto bravo con le Sinfonie di Haydn,per il resto diventa e rimane una cosa personale Grazie e Saluti Gino
Wie angenehm ist es, wenn ein Dirigent Ahnung von den Orchesterinstrumenten hat, in diesem Falle den Streichern, da er selbst Streicher ist. Sehr detailversessene Probe, eine Mischung aus Karl Böhm, und Carlos Kleiber, auch Aspekte von Ricardo Muti sind hörbar, ob sie alle von ihm gelernt haben: Der musikhistorische Ausflug in die Uraufführung des Werkes ist sehr erhellend, jedoch ist es gut, dass man die Gesichter der Musiker nicht sehen kann, denn sie möchten doch spielen. Yes he tells us it was Maelzels machine the "Panharmonican". The barrels must have had the pins in a helical arrangement given the length of this work.

Well ... it's a preposterous piece; but hugely enjoyable, and taken absolutely seriously by the great Scherchen, making it sound a better piece than it actually is. The ratchets -'ratsche' (football rattles) - are intended to represent rifles, which is what was to be heard nearly every Sunday evening at the Royal Albert Hall London during the 1960s/70s, leaving the air smoky with cordite. (Groups of artillery men would fire at each other across the orchestra from each side of the platform.) The bass drums stand in for cannon. Written originally for the Panharmonicon, invented by Maelzel, who also invented the metronome (which is parodied in Beethoven's 8th Symphony). The orchestral version was first heard in 1813 at a concert in aid of soldiers who had fought at the battle of Hanau which also included the 7th Symphony and numbered several famous composers (Spohr, Moscheles, Hummel and Schuppanzigh) in the orchestra. Beethoven conducted, but said he would rather have played the bass drum! Quite an occasion. Note the minimal direction given by Scherchen in the performance - all the work has been done in the rehearsal!
At 11.02 i started enjoying the talk how Beethoven came to write the BATTLE ,UNTILL 15.11 WHEN HE MENTION SALIERI AS MOZART MURDERER ! The players look fed up and tired at the way they look around,i suppose this is the way to use your position to make peoples listen ,regardless! Overall very enjoyable without any tantrums,and with respect for the Orchestra . Saluti Gino

I believe this was Beethoven's most popular work during his lifetime. Can't imagine why it's not a standard part of Last Night at the Proms.
