I first heard this song when I was about 5 years old. I am now 90 years and the thoughts in this song have uplifted me and become a kind of mantra for me. (Thanks to Buddy DeSylva and Jerome Kern--and the performer, Judy Garland)-----Marjorie Wood Richard, Scottsdale, AZ

So lovely to hear your thoughts! My first exposure to this song was an adaptation for the ILGWU commercial "Look for the union label..." As a teen I purchased Risë Stevens sings Jerome Kern an album of 78 rpm record. Then I heard the actual words. That was probably 40 years ago. Loved it ever since.

When I die, I’ve made it clear that I don’t want a funeral or memorial. I just want friends and family to listen to this song for the sheer beauty, and maybe think of me…..and maybe think of all the beauty in this world….like Judy.

Judy has been my favorite singer since I was 12 years old. I'm 63 now!!!! I LOVE this song, besides Judy looking so beautiful here. This song is very special to me. My mother was very verbally abusive to me growing up and I used to go to my room and cry and put on this song and look into the mirror to try to cheer myself up. It has sad but beautiful memories for me. Nobody EVER sang better than Judy Garland---- EVER!!!!!!

As I wash my dishes, I'll be following a plan
Till I see the brightness in ev'ry pot and pan
I am sure this point of view will ease the daily grind
So I'll keep repeating in my mind
    Look for the silver lining
When e'er a cloud appears in the blue
Remember somewhere, the sun is shining
And so the right thing to do is make it shine for you
A heart, full of joy and gladness
Will always banish sadness and strife
So always look for the silver lining
And try to find the sunny side of life
So always look for the silver lining
And try to find the sunny side of life

Exquisite timing...thats what it is all about. She knows just when to look up or to the side or frown a bit or smile, just with her eyes. She tells the story with just her face and when you watch this, it is hard to believe that someone is standing there under hot lights with dozens of technitions around and just making magic look like its as easy as breathing. She is without equal. She makes you want to love her.

@@MaskedMan66 Yet, she thought she was ugly, had less talent than all or any star you could name. She suffered from a terrible inferiority complex her entire life, yet she could sit on the stage on the Palace Theatre in messed up Clown Makeup & begin singing "Somewhere over the Rainbow" & the entire audience sat in silent, rapt attention. I think they were afraid to breath as they might miss a note. She was remarkable, I wish she knew it then. I pray she knows it now.

How beautiful, profound,& substantial the lyrics and the message of this Kern-DeSylva's song are.Whenever we hear this song, our broken spirits, our gloomy lives, and our weakened morale will be uplifted, brightened,& revitalized.Gladness and joy in our hearts will always banish sadness and strife.Ms Judy Garland's rendition of "Look for the Silver Lining" was tinged with passion, hope,& blitheness.Amid the heap of dirty dishes Ms Judy Garland's Beauty & Charm still apparently emerged & gleamed.

From Marion Harris video: "Charted at #1 in April 1921. Also #11 for Isham Jones during the same month and #12 for Lewis James and Elizabeth Spencer in June 1921. First introduced in the 1919 musical, "Zip Goes a Million" which was a flop. It was re-used in the musical "Sally" where it became popular as sung by Marilyn Miller. It later became a Judy Garland favorite, and she sang it in the movie "Till the Clouds Roll By" in which she played Marilyn. Written by Jerome Kern & Buddy DeSylva.."

Even behind a sink full of dishes and artfully smudged dirt on her brow, Judy brings both magic and heartbreak in her performance. And though Richard Whorf is credited as the director of the whole movie, it is Vincente Minnelli who directs his wife's numbers- and you can tell, especially from 1:42 on. Note those lovely dark, glistening eyes that belonged to no other performer. Judy was- and is- singularly gorgeous.

One last time, Judy was PREGNANT WITH LIZA, that's why she's standing behind a slnk. Later in the movie she sings the song WHO, which they turned into a production number. If you look closely you can see a little baby bump. But, her dress does hide it pretty well.

It's from one of MGM's all-star musicals, "Till the Clouds Roll By", a "biography" of Jerome Kern (who was played by Robert Walker, her co-star in "The Clock").
