Lena Horne was one of a kind.No one could touch her for beauty pose or sophistication.She put so much life into her songs.
Hollywood has a stain on it forever for blocking so many great performers. They shorted themselves .

William Craig While I agree with most of what you said, Lena Horne is not considered "interracial". She may be interracial if, by that you mean many ethnicities in her heritage. I am a light -skinned black woman with the same type of heritage - great grandfathers on maternal and paternal sides being white. (My maternal grandfather was born just 20 years after slavery ended. ) But as far as American society is concerned, especially in Lena Horne's time - she's black.
Of course Lena Horne WAS NOT interracial because BOTH of her parents WERE Black,her mother was just very very light skinned in which she LOOKED WHITE,but that don't count she WAS NOT white,she was Black African AND her father was also Black African,so both of her parents were black just like president Barack Obama,well both of his parents WERE Black also,and in fact his mother was MORE Black than the rest of us because the researchers at ancestry.com found out that she came from the MOST famous Black man as she is the daughter of the FIRST Black West African to be enslaved for life in america during the 1600's the first days of slavery.
This has always made me cry, it's so beautiful the way Lena Horne does it, no one else will ever be made for this part and song like her but Hollywood were too racist to cast a tanned woman in the role because one of her parents were black afro-caribbean even though her Mother was white caucasian. Consummate actor/singers who were not white caucasian were never given lead or supporting roles in 1946 only role of servant if female, bloody cheek, how much more classy could she be? If they were male they had to play a butler. A screen test, which is what this is, was as near as this heavenly woman who sang and portrayed this Jerome Kern song to perfection got to ever playing a decent role in film. How could they put brown makeup on Ava Gardner who was her best friend and give her the part instead? Gardner fought them to give Lena the role even trying to copy the way she sang it here. Biggest mistake Hollywood ever made and Horne never got over it. I can't forgive.

+A Krenwinkle Lena came from a very cultured family--parents were college educated I believe--as you mentioned her accent (if any) certainly would not be the stereotype foisted on black actors by H'wood. I knew Chris Calloway--Lena's god daughter--she did a one woman show on Lena.

as was mentioned by another commentator, Lena was fired by studio big wigs because she was 'too black' looking--and Julie, the character, was fired for being found to be part black (which meant you were 'all black' in those days)--is that a double irony or what??!!
not knocking Ava's interpretation, but this is definitive--such a dramatic truth blended with vocal lyricism--a taste of how Show Boat might have been with Lena 'on board'. this is the role that got away from Lena because of bigotry of time. it was a major bitter pill for her but she rose above it--but I don't think she ever truly got over it. the makeup developed for Lena for the film by Max Factor (yes there was such a person!) was later commercially sold for black women, I believe.
According to me, Ms. Horne always looks simply the best! All her songs have magic and they're simply nothing else but an 'Perfection' indeed! I must say that she's my Honeysuckle Rose and that's why i Can't Help Lovin' and adoring her always.
Yeah this is an HD print, as this movie wasn't available anywhere in good quality. Later i saw an special edition DVD of this film available in amazon. It have an outstanding-ly designed menu! So just immediately grabbed it.

Definitely, you're right on the mark. As MUCH as this amazing, beautiful, and talented lady achieved, there was the possibility for so much MORE that was blocked off from her by unfair and unjust people in Hollywood. There was a lot of confusion as to what to do with her in films because there was always the fear of the racists in theaters down South who would refuse to screen movies spotlighting a woman of color in a positive light, and from racist moviegoers who'd protest such films.

Thank you for uping this clip. I did want to make one point of clarification in your description. Whilst they recorded Ms. Gardner's voice for this song in "Showboat", according to Ms. Gardener's own autobiography Annette Warren's voice was dubbed for release of "Showboat".

I won't say anything about Natalie wood playing Maria, bc she was perfect but I heard that Shirley Bassey was considered for The film Oliver to play the lead female, but it would have been an interacial relationship between her and Oliver reed, so she wasn't cast.........!!!????? The point of Julie is that she's secretly passing as white. Yes, Lena was very light (and they put makeup on her look darker on film), but audiences knew Lena was black.
Ms. Horne always possesd so much class and grace, both on and off camera. Her only stumbling block during this era was the unjust laws of Jim Crow, which prevented many talented black artist the oppoortunity of obtaining dignified roles. Many attempts have been made to project her inspiring lifestory through a televisied film. However, before she passed away Ms. Horne justifiably rejected the idea of having her biopic tarnished by the performances of b-list actors such as Janet Jackson!
The style of this performance has Judy Garland stamped all over it.

The excuse made over and over again by people who justify Ms. Horne NOT being cast as Julie in SB, is because people don't want to stoop to "political correctness" (whatever that is supposed to mean, it's another of these asinine comments), and that, being actually black, she apparently didn't look light enough to pass for white (which is the character's dilemma in SB). If this is the real reasoning, it is a weak argument because the actual screen Julie (Ava Gardner) wore the same MGM face powder developed for Horne called 'Light Egyptian' that darkened her face. If they wanted an exotically beautiful white woman to portray a biracial character who doesn't look biracial, why did they darken up Ava? She was a stunner on her own merit, as was Ms. Horne. And Ms. Horne photographed lighter on screen without the Egyptian makeup and otherwise could've been made up to look any way the story required. Horne mentioned all of this in her one-woman show on Broadway, just in case anyone claims I am making this up or being "overly PC".

I definitely think Lena Horne should've played "Julie". Looking at this clip makes me realize she would've contributed some true authenticity and depth to the characterization...something that comes from LIVING the life of a woman of mixed roots and possessing ambiguity which lends to unique experiences with both Black and White people. Ava was beautiful and talented but ultimately had a shallowness with the character.
Lena wasn't mixed race, both of her parents were black. Her husband was white, though.

Actually, MGM had no choice. Because of the strict Code imposed on Hollywood in 1934, (due mostly by the "Catholic League,") inter-racial relationships were banned, as well as kisses lasting more than about 3 seconds. As for homosexuals, since they were considered "inverts" and "perverse," there could be no depiction of them, although they sometimes slipped it by the censors, such as in "Laura" where Clifton Webb was clearly, yet stereotypically homosexual. Great film. This code didn't break down until the early 60's when the ratings system came into effect (G, PG, R.). So it was not always a question of racism at the time, but the strictness of the Code whereby if a studio didn't conform to it, the film could not be released.

Hate to break it to you dear, but Ava's voice was dubbed by a background singer for the 1951 remake. Ava did record this song for the remake but never got released until they released the soundtrack until like the early 90s.
Everyone saying she wouldn’t have been able to play the part because she was fully black and too dark to pass. That’s beside the point. They both lightened and darkened actors makeup for roles. They even had to darken Lena and I believe Dorothy Dandridge for not looking black enough, so you’re telling me they couldn’t lighten her skin and use good lighting to make it more believable. The point is that they often robbed actors of color of opportunities they deserved or would have been perfect for in favor of white actors who, white talented, had NO business playing those roles. Don’t be obtuse.

Even Oprah Winfrey has attempted the idea of producing her own film on this legend through the performance of non-actress, Alicia Keys! Granted, Keys is equally as talented and visually beautiful as Horne but physically and artistically she would do such a part no justice considering the fact that she is not a trained actor! A role of this magnitude should be produced by a truly gifted director who would cast a talented and convincing unknown actress in the role preferably on the big screen!

I find it ironic that though Ava Gardner played the part in the movie, she said she used Lena's performance as a reference, so much so, that she even tried to copy the exact phrasing that was used.
In 1988 I interviewed Lena's daughter Gail when she visited London. She told me that MGM was the least racist studio in Hollywood because they put her mother under long-term contract, but that Arthur Freed (the musical producer who was responsible for casting the 1951 Show Boat) didn't feel that Lena could be believable as a 'white' woman and Julie, the character, had to look white. Gail believed her mother could have and should have been cast as Julie (in 1951) but the racial politics in Hollywood at that time would not permit it. I don't think Lena ever recovered from the disappointment. It must have been heartbreaking. Note: the MGM contract player who was Arthur Freed's 1st choice for the role of Julie in 1951 was Judy Garland, but she had left the studio in 1950. So Ava Gardner replaced her.
I think the studio were right. Ava is stunning and plays the part brilliantly.

Alicia Keys and Janet are both great actresses who grew up around theater so do your research cause thats not true, I think AKeys would do the job justice. This is her dream role too so I'm sure she'd put in over 100% work ethic into this film.

A lot is currently made of the fact that Lena wasn't chosen for the part of Julie Laverne and that it was racially motivated but Hollywood is more complex than that. How else was Julie Andrews passed over for the non-singing Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle or worse still, Dick Van Dyke getting the part of Cockney chimney sweep Bert in Mary Poppins - the biggest casting crime in the history of film musicals!

You are totally right.It would have been great to see black actresses in those roles but the movie codes would not allow it.
However Lena was a singular talent and MGM should have given her more acting opportunities even if it was only in all black movies.MGM let gold slip thru their fingers.
