Whenever I come across Simon Phillips I am struck by how easy he makes it look, his technique is flawless no matter the genre. He has to be one of the most durable and talented drummers of the modern age.
That's completely normal, a surprising amount of metal drummers, including myself, will list jazz players and players of completely different genres as their influences. It's also very awesome!
basically 2 semis on alternate crashes with bass drum then 2 snare drum quaver singles played continuously so it crosses the beat (as in the phrase is 3 semis long). its pretty simple once you break it down. imagine rock quads between snare and bass where you double the note value of the snare and add crashes to bass
I know Simon plays a different type(s) of music, but people rave about Mike Portnoy, but his playing so reliant on double bass drums... Simon has kill double bass drumming skills, yet he is so versatile and the uses the big kit in unique way. He's been a favorite of my for years. I met him at one of his clinics in the mid 1990's. I love how he tunes his kit - very open with no muffling, just a little on the bass drums
@josakk , 7/8 is "well, if i concentrate like there's nothing else on earth I can play it", but 11/8 is just wicked. Need to be a very talented musician to be confortable in that measure.
@seonittinoes Simon admires Billy Cobham and makes no bones about his being a major influence in his move to double bass drums in the mid 1970s. But Simon Phillips has a unique sound and I could easily differentiate Simon from Billy on audio.
@dantean great observation I tend to agree I can only imagine the market for this stuff is kids in college entering their first or second semesters of their jazz program
@dantean Totally right, my good friend (and yours is one of the best explanations I have ever heard about the recent musical banality!): the "compositions" you have mentioned seem only to be the way to show high skills techniques, churned out just to impress and be consumed quickly. Unfortunately, life is becoming banal in everything. All my respect from Brazil!
The fill from / on 1:11 (snare/crashes/bassdrums) is a typical Simon Phillips-signature-fill. He plays it for decades now. I'm still wondering what he's playing. For sure the crashes fall together with the bassdrums, but what are the notes and handsetting between the crashes and the snare? Anyone??
usually most drummers as they get older, will , for lack of a better word,"soften" their set up, either with smaller sizes, lower their hardware and instrument adjustment levels and positions, etc..and so on so forth..but not Simon..still has the exact same set up he had 25 yrs ago ! incredible player with a keen sense of musicality !
@drummerboy2196 Much to learn young man. If you sat behind that drumkit, the last thing you would be thinking about is which method of mounting was used. Focus more on what this incredible drummer is doing and you will find yourself overwhelmed with the amount of knowledge you can gain by this one video
We live in an age of players not composers, so every technically amazing musician has his own band, affording him an equal shot at our listening time. I can't tell you how uninterested I am by the "compositions" churned out by the great players of our time: the Holdsworths, the Brufords, Weckls--you name 'em!
Simon Phillips is a musician's musician. He is a virtuoso and is untouchable by petty criticism. I am not fond of his style of music (light jazz) but that is meaningless to his talent or influence. I kowtow to you Simon and thank you for your talent, teaching and transcendence.
@tilman79 , yep totally right haha i was counting it all wrong I was like 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 5 and 1...., (well that´s 8th notes too right?) although you can count it like that to right? Sorry is that i´m practicing, counting all the music that I´m hearing hehe.
I think they're double strokes in 5. Maybe triplets...im not sure. But if you see he is alternating his hands between the crashes and the snare. But then its hard to tell whether he is playing doubles or singles on the snare.. they kind of sound like singles. If thats the case then its swung triplets or something.. i wish i knew!!
@r4pt0rP5K i have a relatively big TAMA kit and there is nothing wrong with it, gives you more opportunity to do more things, and its allot more fun too, 5 peice kits are cool, but when you have more of a variety you can do allot more.
It's usually musicians on a very low level musically speaking that always find ways to criticize virtuoso musicians. I know many players after 30,40 or 50 years that play the same Mickey Mouse beats that they've played their entire life. And these drummers feel the need to denigrate the virtuosos of the instrument. Music is about many things,it's not only about composing or writing 3 minute 3 chord songs.Greatness knows no boundaries.

great ears plucker,,,,,,the fills feel like warm up exercises and like you say the safe zone. I thought eh grooves in the second piece much MORE on the front edge...ah but who am I .... just another frogg in the pond with no label........ I am a lefty and play open soI have a soft spot for simon and love his longer counted out rythms,,,,,,and explosive drumming, but agree with Weckl, Vinnie in a choice line up...........hmmm what do you play plucker?
It's amazing how todays supposed players can criticize another when he himself hasn't done anything. I suppose you have to have an ear for music to understand what's really goin on. open up and listen. there is an intricate number of things goin on here. Weckl, Holdsworth Bruford Caliuta and the like have opened a hell of alot of doors for us who want to improve and know that the unthinkable is now possible. just listen to thomas lang, Donati Terrana, and minneman just to name a few.
is this metal jazz up until 1:40 or something? im not sure im a fan.... still he is doing a better job then me i guess. lets just give it 15-20 years xD
well it was a drumming competition, so the fact that he is showing off on the drums is the whole point, duh. If you don't like it, then don't listen to it, it's not supposed to be incredibly emotional music or anything, just doing his drums with some nice session players to complement it.
Even though I'm a metal player, I have to give this guy respect. He makes me want to widen my horizons as a drummer.
He's like a vintage wine. Getting better every year.
Whenever I come across Simon Phillips I am struck by how easy he makes it look, his technique is flawless no matter the genre. He has to be one of the most durable and talented drummers of the modern age.
Best drummer ever !!! That sound is amazing !!!!!!!!!!
Wow, i just love to watch this movie and find inspiration
INCREDIBLE DRUMMER.....ONE OF THE BEST...
This is superb, composed of high level professionals including Andy Timmons, Simon Phillips and others.
One of the best out there, no question!
Love Simon Cobham I mean Phillips. He has the Billy thing down so cold. Very impressive. What a treat to see dudes play like this...
Simon IS GOOOOD!!
I know this is MD Fest, but that sax solo was killer. Simon Phillips tore it up too.
The song is called "Kumi Na Moja" from his '99 Album "Another Lifetime", the second title is "Biplane to Bermuda" from his album "Symbiosis"...
DUDE! HIS TOMS ARE AMAZING!
i was at this show... simon phillips looked so small behind that huge kit.. but he's one the of the most amazing drummers of all time
@TtAbrams thanks! Gavin Harrison is out of this world!
Yes!!!!
This guy is Awesome !
amazingness
best sounding snare in the business!!!!!!!!
That's completely normal, a surprising amount of metal drummers, including myself, will list jazz players and players of completely different genres as their influences. It's also very awesome!

I'm a huge fan of Simon, but that sax player ooozes all kinds of cool.
Wish I could have been there.

Amazing dexterity.

Uhhh Simon Phillips is one of Mike's inspirations!
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
It IS crash crash snare snare snare snare. The 3rd and 4th snare hits are ghosted. Go for it. :D
1:12-1:16 Sick!! He manages to keep 4 cymbals moving & still have time for his snare!
its nice to hear andy timmons in a group like this
OMG Simon is how I found out about Billy Cobham when I was little
i agree!
Me too!
@zzzzzushi I think what you're looking at and think is 'warping' is actually the duct tape that's wrapped around the pillows inside the drums.
The original drummer that played drums on MJ's Billie Jean on the Timbales!
Ndugu Chancler!!!
You can tell how much Billy Cobham had a influence on Simon.....but you can still hear Simon
the solo breaks(@ :48) is definitely taken from the bridge section of Beck's "Freeway jam"
As they say down under, "Good on ya!"
Simon, who da man? Yes, YOU da man!
@josakk , 7/8 is "well, if i concentrate like there's nothing else on earth I can play it", but 11/8 is just wicked. Need to be a very talented musician to be confortable in that measure.
depends on which bit you're talking about. The end part is in 7/8.
THE BIG MASTER

@dantean great observation I tend to agree I can only imagine the market for this stuff is kids in college entering their first or second semesters of their jazz program
This is as good as progressive rock gets!!!!

a fair argument about youtube.....ill use it in the future!
Yes it is... :D
@drummerboy2196 I expect so. He's used one for years.
See the dude running ableton live...WIN

@nimer42 I think they're called 'Protocol'

Simon's allright. Leave him alone.
@r4pt0rP5K i have a relatively big TAMA kit and there is nothing wrong with it, gives you more opportunity to do more things, and its allot more fun too, 5 peice kits are cool, but when you have more of a variety you can do allot more.

SYDUB that would be Billy Cobham and me haha. Left handed on a right handed kit.
Why? Because he choose to play that way of course. It opens up the playing much more and it gives it a more dynamic approach.
@Philzwhodrumz i searched for the name but i didnt found anything from what he said something with Proda^&% i dunno

I wonder which exact pedals and pedalclubs he uses?

what do you play plucker?
Wow , I can tell you're very intelligent and most importantly mature with that comment.
if i were in an elevator, i'd bounce to this!
why do most of the comments seem negative when theres only like 9 dislikes
What is that first song called?
first tune is in 11/8 and second in 7/8
sounds like a cross between dream theater and the mars volta
@nimer42 What's the OPENING SENTANCE?
@boredomisexciting yeah i hear 11/8 too
isn't it Everette Harp on the Sax ??? : o
I have a doubt, the first song is in 5/8???
