David is extremely focused, always looking for subtle complexities and layers. He doesn't react emotionally too often when he discovers them, but just continues discovering and building. Had the privilege of playing with him one time many years ago -- an experience I will never forgot. He just gets better and better and better year after year. Amazing.
macfilms13 Any musicians...singers who can build , develop!& have let go....are truly great ones ! Some just do what they have practiced & that's all they can!
Whenever I "solo" I tend to rush, watching this has helped my realize that it's necessary to sometimes sit back, breathe and don't be in such a hurry to get through it. Relax, think about what you wanna do.
This Is Super Great solo and Performance! garibaldi has always been one of the masters when it comes to Funk and Latin stuff !! WAUW Great solo! Very super professional man.
He is enjoying it!! He is just deep in the zone!! When drumming feels this good to listen to,the person playing is REALLY feeling it!! I hear nothing but passion, and a commitment to quality!! I have learned more off of David and Gadd than anybody!! Master of the groove, and a pretty damn good soloist too!!
Wow... a) sounds SO good because it is 100% deliberate and not just a fast-blast solo, b) you can actually learn the maneuvers from watching because his posture and placement is so disciplined !
Thanks David for funkin me up. You have always been a great inspiration ever since I saw you and Tower for the first time in -78. I'm still playing some of you funky stuff specially Soul Vacination, Diggin' on JB ect. Keep on and I hope to see you and the band soon in Denmark again
i am a drummer 4 years already and i saw that man first time now. maybe i am a noob for someone ,but i found one of my favorite drummers, after Buddy ,Steve and Jojo. Just Wow
His grooves are insane to play! If you can play his stuffs at ease you have a sick, twisted brain! Try playing it without good co-ordination skills your brain will explode in a minute. He puts the slickest note at the slickest place which will just piss you off on the drums! He just make them look easy. Btw I am referring to things like Squib Cake or Oakland Stroke here.
I've seen them live in concert one week ago in 'De Oosterpoort' in Groningen (Holland).. They were absolutely fantastic to me!.. I think they were to everyone who have had ever seen them!! (Y) TOWER OF POWER OWNT!
Most people probably don't notice but he's playing 16th ghost notes on that snare throughout the entire freaking 4 minutes ;p They're just so ghosted and come so naturally that they may go unnoticed.
That's what I love about Davids drumming just pure raw talent. Alot of new age drummers they are now starting to alot of fills more on cymbals than on the actual drums themselves.
I LOVE THE SOUND OF HIS DRUM...DRUMMING ! SO PRETTY ! PERFECT! He is not only a great drummer & well known among the drummers , but also a very sexy drummer!
David tunes that yamaha 4.5 brass pic snare just right with a zero ring. Does not choke the drum ala timale. Weckl,Colaiuta used the same exact snare during the period. Still have mine from my old Maple custom kit I used.
David Garibaldi is the funk master- one of the great funk drummers- style, groove and musicality of the highest quality to be sure- check out this solo by the author of "The Book of Funk- grooves for snare, bass and hihat" search: "Drum Solo in 3 Movements"
thats is how a drum solo should be played, like a story, so all you drummers out there, please dont start by telling how the story is going to end, or jump to the best parts of the tale. Build up is what drummers today lack.
This is one of my favourite drum solos. The congas (?) in the background are a really great addition, in that they really help the listener to understand the phrasing and syncopation of the solo on top, in terms of the metre; too often with drum solos the dilineation of the bar gets totally lost. Anyway, great solo Dave!
lol. He makes me laugh every time I see what I see what he's wearing. But he is the epitome of how a drummer should be, relaxed, humble, and totally himself. Doesn't care about the huge drumset, doesn't care about always flashing his talent around, it's all about interpretation when it comes to the drums, and he is one of the masters of interpretation. More drummers should be like him and take note.
He's good enough to be the foundation of Tower of Power.. That speaks volumns about his mans ability..I spoke to him at the bar at Jazz Alley in Seattle after a TOP concert and found him to be a way cool polite individual to boot...
He's written (from what I know) two books - Future Sounds and the Code of Funk. The Code of Funk is a book of some of his drum transcriptions, while Future Sounds is an in depth book about funk studies, permutation exercises, etc. I highly recommend Future Sounds. Hope this helps.
Excuse me may I ask a question please?... Hoping someone can find the link too the portrait he did of a firefighter I love that one and I can not seem too find it tyvm
Wow, 32 thumbs down so far - what a bunch of neanderthals. Glad to see some are wading in their musically shallow aquarium , instead of taking a dive into the ocean of rhythmic, harmonic, and melodic genius !

Whoever is playing percussion is also a MONSTER!!! Keeps his rhythm solid throughout! This is a GREAT DUET!
alotoaltosaxes I totally AGREE! My hands will fall off ! If I have to do what he is doing here! Lol.
David Garibaldi is one of the greatest drummers in the world. He is still one of my favorite drummers to this day.

Whenever I "solo" I tend to rush, watching this has helped my realize that it's necessary to sometimes sit back, breathe and don't be in such a hurry to get through it. Relax, think about what you wanna do.
Garibaldi pulls off these crazy synchronizations because he plays with such machine-like precision.
Solo sounds great. Those hand drums in the background sound pretty damn good too.
David Garibadi is the world's most serious drummer. He once upset a doberman in a staring contest.
So tidy! What a great pair of hands! Beautiful!
This Is Super Great solo and Performance! garibaldi has always been one of the masters when it comes to Funk and Latin stuff !! WAUW Great solo! Very super professional man.
Such an incredibly funky drummer! Loved every bit of that!
Moulins,accents décalés,un must.il me fait toujours trenspirer,le bougre! Great drummer .
In an interview DG was asked about his serious drumming face and he said he was smiling on the inside.
He is enjoying it!! He is just deep in the zone!! When drumming feels this good to listen to,the person playing is REALLY feeling it!! I hear nothing but passion, and a commitment to quality!! I have learned more off of David and Gadd than anybody!! Master of the groove, and a pretty damn good soloist too!!
bobbystockerdrums Yeah! Well said! Can't believe some are disliking this solo!& telling him to smile!!!? Lol.I don't want/ like smily drummers! Lol.
they are funky as hell, even their shirts got funky
o man I forgot about this guy. He was one of the 3 I watched all the time years ago. the other 2 were Dave Weckle and Simon Phillips.
Wow... a) sounds SO good because it is 100% deliberate and not just a fast-blast solo, b) you can actually learn the maneuvers from watching because his posture and placement is so disciplined !
Thanks David for funkin me up.

@ThomasMetal75 He was a Paiste user starting from the early days of TOP, and if memory serves, it was some time during the 90's when he switched.
such a tight solo and also a brilliant sounding kit! i dont care what anyone says, he's a fantastic drummer!
Pretty solid band and my hero DG on the traps!!
i am a drummer 4 years already and i saw that man first time now. maybe i am a noob for someone ,but i found one of my favorite drummers, after Buddy ,Steve and Jojo. Just Wow

Good Gawd he closed this like a boss! That groove!!
Most people probably don't notice but he's playing 16th ghost notes on that snare throughout the entire freaking 4 minutes ;p They're just so ghosted and come so naturally that they may go unnoticed.
come on dude, you're one of the best drummers out there. smile or sumpin!
DG is definitely one of my idols, as a kid, Tower of Power. What a player!!!!!
I love how relaxed he is. I went to a clinic he did years ago, and it was amazing what he was doing with just the kick, snare, and hats.
David you got a pocket full of soul brother.
Sooooo good!!
ahh fantastic clave, fun stuff
great solo
fantastic!!
That's what I love about Davids drumming just pure raw talent. Alot of new age drummers they are now starting to alot of fills more on cymbals than on the actual drums themselves.
Happy B-Day Mr. Garibaldi - the king of funk drum
Great Left Hand!
Dave is the man.
I LOVE THE SOUND OF HIS DRUM...DRUMMING ! SO PRETTY ! PERFECT! He is not only a great drummer & well known among the drummers , but also a very sexy drummer!

David Garibaldi is a powerhouse drummer.
HAHAHAHA!! I'm gonna see David Garibaldi along with Tower of Power at North Sea Jazz '08 in Ahoy Rotterdam :P! Can't wait.

Going to see them tomarrow night Stockton Ca
love that snare
That's an unorthodox way to think about this music. But now that you mention it I am somehow sticking to it :)
@remydrums No its his yamaha signature snare, i believe its 14x3.5
such a nice sounding snare.
3:18-3:32 is so Awesome!
Dave is the man!

@TheSyncopator not to mention that this is "escape from oakland" with an emphasis on the drum solo...probably from an old david garibaldi drum tape.
150 % tight!!!!!
The percussionist in this clip is Michael Spiro. He's now a professor at Indiana University. Nice guy, too!
one of my favourites, great work with Tower Of Power
Hey BirchKing8... On the guitar´s Ray Oviedo... Great Men!! UFFFFF!!!!! Killers right!!!!
Bloody hell, smile David!
Perfect.
Holy Ghost notes !!!!! That is the true test of any drummer
the hell with that- in awe of the interaction.
I wish my kit sounded like this. Everything sounds so perfect :-D
so dope
When everybody know's exactly what they are doing it almost becomes boring.. even when it's great. And I love DG
Is he playing on the offbeat @ 3:55 or is it in cut time......
those shirts give them power
I once met David Garibaldi after a show. We spoke and shook hands. I was hard for a week!
SICK.
Wow - two high hats!
Consummate professional. A legend. I bet he just rocked up, sat on the kit and did the entire thing in one take.
I laugh every time i hear that drum beat at the end. Fucking sick. Garibaldi is the champ.
+cremesupreme He's playing 9/16 over 4/4...."nine-a-diddles as he calls it. Check out his book The Code of Funk...he demonstrates it.
FREEKIN AMAZING
He's good enough to be the foundation of Tower of Power.. That speaks volumns about his mans ability..I spoke to him at the bar at Jazz Alley in Seattle after a TOP concert and found him to be a way cool polite individual to boot...
WOW!!!!
If I could played like David, I would sport those silk shirts EVERYDAY!!!
@Stickmasterrr The play-along is from Dave's book called The Funky Beat. The tune is called Escape From Oakland. Hope this is of help to u.

I've been looking for the drumless playalong track for this song. Can anyone please help me find it? I would really appreciate it...
That is Ray Obiedo on Guitar and Peter Horvat on Keyboards
thank you for your consideration.
