They don’t need to become liberal democracies per se - their culture and ethos is obviously not compatible with ours. That’s fine. It’s absolutely fine to remain a conservative monarchy for example. I don’t expect feminism to thrive there, but at the very least - in the 21st century - their women ought to have some level of autonomy, access to education and not be forcefully married at the age of 12 to their first cousin.

My main contention with what Majid says is this: If an uneducated stone age peasant had a child bride, then yes you can contextualise and make the argument that he was more innocent because of the time he was living in. But I don't think this can be done as well with Muhammad because muslims believe he was the final prophet of god (basically the most important human being in history) and so why would a god allow his final prophet to marry a child when it would have been so easy for god to make it so the prophet did not marry a child? If they understood Biblical Hebrew AND studied Torah, (Tenach- the Hebrew bible), both Christians and, Muslims would find no reason to remain in their respective faiths, and, not for reasons of heaven(emphasis needed). Go and learn and learn is was the wise rabbis teach. Ts hard work!

Apparently, Allah speaks only in Arabic. That is why Islamic apologists claim an exaggeration of a text when spoken in English or any other language other than Arabic. The honest truth is that religion is always judged by its current followers and their behaviors. How else are you going to judge a religion? By reading the text? No. Because most people are not reading the complete text to follow the religion. Most Christians do not read the bible fully. Most Hindus do not read the bhagwad gita fully, and most Muslims do not read the Quran fully. It is by the behavior of their followers that the religion is judged. So, the more apt topic would have been are Islamists peaceful? The answer would be a definite No. But, is Islam peaceful? only yes in a scenario where people are not following Quran then.

Peace to the islamists does not mean a spirit of brotherly love and goodwill towards non Muslims. Peace, according to their religious teachings and practices, are futuristic, when they have the entire world conquered and subdued for Islam, then there will be peace. Basically, peace is the absence of war, not the everyday spirit (zeitgeist) of the people.

I watched this about a decade ago, it's so frustrating that nothing has changed. My main contention with what Majid says is this:
If an uneducated stone age peasant had a child bride, then yes you can contextualise and make the argument that he was more innocent because of the time he was living in.
But I don't think this can be done as well with Muhammad because muslims believe he was the final prophet of god (basically the most important human being in history) and so why would a god allow his final prophet to marry a child when it would have been so easy for god to make it so the prophet did not marry a child? Surely this just shows plainly that Islam is not true

Came across this video in September but didn’t bother to remember Douglas’s name. And then I started following him on Instagram after the Oct 7th terror attack but didn’t think it was the same person. After a week of watching his posts I realized that the way he speaks sounded very familiar and was pleasantly surprised to learn that I “fell in love” with the intellect of 2 people who turned out to be the same person 😅

Apparently, Allah speaks only in Arabic. That is why Islamic apologists claim an exaggeration of a text when spoken in English or any other language other than Arabic. An important distinction between the religion itself and it's followers was not made by any of the panelists. So my question is - "Is Islam defined by the text or by it's current followers?"
The honest truth is that religion is always judged by its current followers and their behaviors. How else are you going to judge a religion? By reading the text? No. Because most people are not reading the complete text to follow the religion. Most Christians do not read the bible fully. Most Hindus do not read the bhagwad gita fully, and most Muslims do not read the Quran fully. It is by the behavior of their followers that the religion is judged. So, the more apt topic would have been are Islamists peaceful? The answer would be a definite No. But, is Islam peaceful? only yes in a scenario where people are not following Quran then.
