@jeffforsythe9514 because religion is the source of most of the greatest atrocities human kind has ever known, all in the name of a clearly fictitious character we now understand is not real, as we learn further about our universe and where we came from. We no longer require the crutch of religion. And those that do, hinder society greatly. Hence the need for people like Hitchens and these debates.
Rickenbacker Von Braun Atheists don’t have to defend their position, firstly because the burden of proof is not on them, they are not making the affirmative claim. Atheists saying “I don’t know” is factually accurate because one cannot possibly know for sure, however theists claim that they do know there’s a god, which they cannot conceivably know.
Rickenbacker Von Braun Simply stating that someone is wrong is not an affirmative claim, because they are not affirming anything, they are simply stating a disbelief in the claim, not putting forward alternatives that cannot be proved by tests and evidence

@@blackbird5634 Hitchens is making a straw man argument. Implicit in his demand for "Proof" is the assumption that God is amenable to science. Science is the study of the physical, material world, which any Christian will tell you is not the proper characterisation of God. This type of sophistry is an exemplar of the poverty of Hitchens' arguments against the existence of God. Much as I adored Hitchens as he shredded every demagogue who deserved it in the 80s and 90s, his atheist arguments were callow and beyond fatuous.
@@tobetrayafriend if you ignore the 'science' of proof you enter the 'woo woo' (Richard Dawkins' words) areas, and then god becomes a feeling or an atom, or a collective unconscious. Humanity will not be held hostage to people who think and feel they 'know the mind of god' and use it to punish the rest of us who deny his/her existence. No, anyone making the claim has all the weight of proof on them.
@@blackbird5634 The problem I have with Hitchens rabid atheism is that it's self-defeating. He scorns the idea of God, citing lack of "proof" as an unanswerable repudiation of theism. But we shouldn't expect proof (which will necessarily be grounded in the material universe) of a being which, definitionally, is unconstrained by and transcends time, space and matter. This is why I said in my original comment that Hitchens had constructed a straw man. His argument is bankrupt, yet he presents it as a "Gotcha!" A few other issues: firstly, he is guilty of intellectual arrogance in the framing of his argument (as a reminder, I'm a fan of Hitchens when he is tackling less ineffable subject matter). Science hasn't come close to answering the really profound questions, such as the birth of the universe, the extraordinary levels of fine tuning present at both the macro and micro scales, the location of the seat of consciousness and the role it plays in the universe. Until these questions have been satisfactorily answered by science (which they most certainly have not), surely it is the height of arrogance to categorically dismiss other points of view? Secondly, Hitchens, like many atheists, tend to conflate "God" with "religion." This conflation allows him a fair old romp, because he can triumphantly grab all the low hanging fruit of legitimate criticism that one can aim at organised religious institutions, and claim victory against theism. But religion and its institutions are man made and hence fallible. Pointing out the evils of Islamic terrorism is not a valid rebuttal of God. Thirdly, to take your argument that the lack of scientific proof means that one is reduced to the realm of woo - one man's woo is another man's faith. Lastly, as someone who spent many years as an agnostic, before grappling with the subject of God and coming to a considered theistic position on the topic over many years, I do see strong evidence for God. For example, the existence of love - I don't have enough faith to believe that love is the product of atoms. That genuinely is a step too far.
Hitchens looked into everything, his opponents just looked into one thing and he buried every single one of them with everything while the tryed to bury him with one thing.

I was so confused by the Rabbi's approach in his first speech. He takes a number of quotes from Hitchens which focus on criticizing prominent religious figures (Teresa, Ghandi etc.) and claims this is an example of Hitchens being unjustly bigoted, but then makes no attempt to show that Hitchens' critique of these these people is unjust. Wow, I was genuinely trying to listen to Boteach because I think If you tune into a debate, it's important to listen to all of it, not just the bits that interest you, but half an hour into this I need to tap out. The lack of coherency combined with the tone has my brain dribbling out of my ears with a combination of boredom and annoyance that is almost impressive. There's only so much masochism I can take lol.
"After all the burden of proof is not with me." -Hitchens just killing it right from the get go.
Wish I had said that. Great.
@J. Dallison since no proof of god exists the entire argument for god's existence is on the Rabbi. I just laugh when anyone says otherwise.
His argument is bankrupt, yet he presents it as a "Gotcha!"
A few other issues: firstly, he is guilty of intellectual arrogance in the framing of his argument (as a reminder, I'm a fan of Hitchens when he is tackling less ineffable subject matter).
My “god” Hitchens is so well read, researched and prepared. He crushed the doctor treating non Jews on the sabbath court case. I miss this man.
Hitchens looked into everything, his opponents just looked into one thing and he buried every single one of them with everything while the tryed to bury him with one thing.

I've seen quite a few Hitchens debates but Rabbi Boteach appears to be one of his most unpleasant opponents. He completes the entire series of fallacies and breaches of good conduct that are so ubiquitous amongst apologists: Ad hominem, misrepresentation of facts, scientific theories and what other people said, quote mining, outright internal inconsistencies in his arguments, invented "facts" and much more. One could write down his speech verbatim and then debunk every single sentence he has uttered. Top this off with a voice (and volume) that makes one fear for his health and you've got the prototype of how not to conduct a debate.

I’d consider myself a layman and even I was shocked at how inept Rabbi Boteach’s arguments were. My entire face contorted several times, but when he brought up mutations, I think I turned inside out.
I second this
Ask the Rabbi if he has ever had a wet fart in public. If he has then he can pray and thank god the intelligent designer for it
When he was talking about that 3rd arm all I could think was well as an electrician that would be usefull, the thing is it would take a few generations to get there and I am not sure it is worth the investment
He talks as if he knows what he is talking about but I can assure you that God exists and is merciful and looks at every one of us as precious, His finest creations............falun dafa
Agreed about the rabbi's mutation word salad. I am a bioscience nerd, and retired medical translator. The rabbi was completely out of his depth. Hitchens isn't deeply versed either, but he knows enough to stay in his lane. He will make broad if general comments that are true enough, but I have never heard him try to bluff like this fool does.
You know you are in trouble when Hitchens addresses you with “EXCUSE ME SIR, Excuse me”!
...or when he repeats his interlocutor's terrible point and says one of my favorite of his proclamations, "I refuse to be talked to in this tone!"
I said good day sir!
That Rabbi reminds me of Al Sharpton in the way he talks. All flash, no cash. Rehearsed and emotive... like all cultists.
Religious turds spout truth!
Yuup, in one word ‘cult’.

I was thinking the same. Very funny that.
There seems an irony in Rabbi Boteach reading his argument that the eye is evidence of the miraculous through spectacles.
Hahaha
Outstanding, how did i not notice his god must have made a mistake.

@@alanwilson4860 Google 'tzimtzum'. Imprecations are a necessary consequence of God's decision to permit free will to exist. It isn't "ironic". It's apposite, and it's consistent with mainstream Jewish thought.
On the other hand, if you're looking for flaws in Jewish culture, customs, or beliefs, I could direct you to much more glaring flaws. We could start why God's back was turned to us during the Shoah, or the days of the Spanish Inquisition, or the Alhambra Decree of 1492, or the day the Magna Carta was signed, or the Bellum Judaicum.
Why does Boteach shout? Does he think it makes his points better? Of course, he is preaching.
He has passion. He isn't shouting.
If you have no logic to back up your argument, shout loud -as if your audience will then believe you know what you are talking about!

Hitchens makes a compelling argument against a religious outlook and religion as a whole.
The Rabbi makes a personal attack against Hitchens and promotes his own book.

The Rabbi doesn’t get one laugh. In fact I found the Rabbi’s talk was very depressing. I tried really hard, but I just couldn’t listen to his voice dribbling on and criticising everyone else and not getting to the point.
He is painful right? God is real because of what Antiochus Epiphanes did to us. Oy, everyone is mean to us. Even though we never did anything to anyone ever.

@@angelg5240 Well, are you?
I was so confused by the Rabbi's approach in his first speech. He takes a number of quotes from Hitchens which focus on criticizing prominent religious figures (Teresa, Ghandi etc.) and claims this is an example of Hitchens being unjustly bigoted, but then makes no attempt to show that Hitchens' critique of these these people is unjust.
He also tries to make a case against 'social Darwinism' which he equates as being the same as evolution. You cannot make a case against evolution based off a critique of Social Darwinism. That's utter madness. I would also add that since evolution prizes genetic diversity that genetic 'defects' are actually favored by evolution which makes the entire case of social Darwinism fairly defunct.
Just imagine a rabbi, these days, thinking that he would illicit sympathy when condemning genocide.
Those days are over.
That Rabbi had very weak arguments.
So then he thought "Maybe if I yell them out hard enough it will make them stronger".
It didn't.
I didn’t really hear an argument.

Dr. Neil Gillman is the unsung hero of this debate. The way he repeatedly attempted at "moderating" the poor Rabbi was absolutely brilliant and hysterical at the same time.
I completely lost it when towards the very end, he so calmly and innocently took out a handkerchief and blew his nose, during Mr. Boteach's fiery speech on the Amalekites 😂😂😂
Awww , that was brilliant . Hitchens going straight for what he wanted to say and Boteach going straight for character assassination . Hitchens could use so many different angles but he isn't perturbed by any come backs . As soon as he saw the opposition's stance he knew he had it in the bag . It saddens me a little though to see a man slowly taken apart in public . Boteach starts with such confidence but ends as a quivering mess . He can get away with it with his regular congregation as he is intelligent , a good looking guy and possibly a nice man . I don't know him personally so cannot say for sure . He just comes across that way . But facing a master is a different story . Christopher is calm and ready for another hundred rounds . Also he has the strength to stall an answer for a moment so he could deal with a challenge . The greatest debater I have heard . Man , I wish he was still with us .....
