@jeffforsythe9514 because religion is the source of most of the greatest atrocities human kind has ever known, all in the name of a clearly fictitious character we now understand is not real, as we learn further about our universe and where we came from. We no longer require the crutch of religion. And those that do, hinder society greatly. Hence the need for people like Hitchens and these debates.

the desire for immortality proves man was made for immortality. If you have ever been in love there are moments when you want that moment to last forever, Immortality, an eternal state of some joy we experience usually in terms of love, reveals that the Immortal one God, is love, is beauty, is truth and we are to live forever, Jesus rose from the dead to reveal to us we will be resurrected in the future as He promised. Hitchins did not believe in God, but he knows now. The sad thing about atheists is that they cannot accept the logical acceptance of pure science in those miracles that are wholly beyond the laws of nature and of which scientific proof abounds in Xrays, surgeon's witness, and suchlike. I do not speak of faith-healing that can happen with human expectation within limitation, no, I speak of miracles wholly miraculous: instanteneous growth of many inches in a shortened limb, a whole new kidney where it had beed extracted a week before: large holes in the bone in an instant wholly regrown, wheelchair person with broken back instantly made whole..So I cannot respect a person such as Hitchins and his like due to their illogicality in the face of scientific evidence.

When given the chance to demonstrate just how woefully disgraceful the church and all theistic religions are to a new audience, why not take every opportunity you can get?
Nobody leaves a debate regarding religion against Dawkins thinking better of the church, or any religion. And it only ends up leading others to the immense catalogue of videos and books by Hitchens, if only serving to put the final nail in the coffin.
I wish theistic religion and thise that follow these religions, while fully awarr of the knowledge of the harm they have done and the actions of their representatives a swift and agonising death along with those that follow it blindly as in modern times, there is simply no excuse for it.
I have a slight forgiveness for those of whom don't understand or ever see all of the horrific deeds the church does, such as the elderly without access to the information we all now possess like my sweet and dare I say.. saint of a grandmother. May she rest in peace. She was the kindest soul I have ever and will ever know, and was the true embodiment of kindness and unconditional love. What the church should represent, but without fail, fails epicly to do so.
Had she known what the church truly was instead of simply only seeing the dogma they portray, I habe no doubt she would habe disavowed the church.
She may still habe had her belief in God and thr goodness of God, but I know she would habe been disgusted by the institution itself and would never habe supported such a thing had she known.
I feel terrible for all those in similar situations, doing all they can to try to be a representative of true good in the world, all while unknowingly serving such a woefully disgraceful institution.
It would have crushed her to know the truth. And as such, I never had the heart to tell her. Not when she was I'm her 90's and already near death without having known. Telling her would have done nothing but harm an innocent soul. But we can now save future generations from such indignity and abuse by spreading the true word of the church and its hateful and disgraceful ideologies.
Those that do see the horrific acts of the church and are aware of its vile nature and still choose to support it though, I wish them a slow and agonising end.
There is no room in this world of ours for child sex offender apologists.
May the end of theistic religion come swiftly. And it is already on it's way with rapidly declining attendance. I wish them a slow, miserable and incomprehensibly painful end. Perhaps that will make up for at least a fraction of the damage done by the followers of religious ideologies and dogma.
Personally, I hope hell exists. Because it will ironically, primarily be filled with religious people of the world.
The heads of theistic religions at this point, those that know what happens within their system, deserve to be lined up and shot. Much like the millions of people they murdered in the name of God.
Any wonder the pope needs to drive in a bulletproof car. He needs it. And he knows it. I wish him an his constituents an unconscionably slow and painful end, like George Pell and the rest of his child molesting friends.
May they die and spend an eternity suffering.
It's a shame he'll doesn't exist, as it would be almost exclusively reserved for those that are a part of this and other disgraceful theistic, religious institution leaders and willing participants.

But no evidence has been demonstrated that God does exist, and a lack of evidence can be considered evidence that God doesn't exist.
A lack of evidence is evidence, but not proof that a claim may be dismissed
So, the case for God's existence is definitely weighed in the favour of his non existence.
But neither side has been proven.
To claim that God doesn't exist, is a claim that carries a burden of proof though.

@@blackbird5634 The problem I have with Hitchens rabid atheism is that it's self-defeating. He scorns the idea of God, citing lack of "proof" as an unanswerable repudiation of theism. But we shouldn't expect proof (which will necessarily be grounded in the material universe) of a being which, definitionally, is unconstrained by and transcends time, space and matter. This is why I said in my original comment that Hitchens had constructed a straw man. His argument is bankrupt, yet he presents it as a "Gotcha!"
A few other issues: firstly, he is guilty of intellectual arrogance in the framing of his argument (as a reminder, I'm a fan of Hitchens when he is tackling less ineffable subject matter). Science hasn't come close to answering the really profound questions, such as the birth of the universe, the extraordinary levels of fine tuning present at both the macro and micro scales, the location of the seat of consciousness and the role it plays in the universe. Until these questions have been satisfactorily answered by science (which they most certainly have not), surely it is the height of arrogance to categorically dismiss other points of view?
Secondly, Hitchens, like many atheists, tend to conflate "God" with "religion." This conflation allows him a fair old romp, because he can triumphantly grab all the low hanging fruit of legitimate criticism that one can aim at organised religious institutions, and claim victory against theism. But religion and its institutions are man made and hence fallible. Pointing out the evils of Islamic terrorism is not a valid rebuttal of God.
Thirdly, to take your argument that the lack of scientific proof means that one is reduced to the realm of woo - one man's woo is another man's faith.
Lastly, as someone who spent many years as an agnostic, before grappling with the subject of God and coming to a considered theistic position on the topic over many years, I do see strong evidence for God. For example, the existence of love - I don't have enough faith to believe that love is the product of atoms. That genuinely is a step too far.

What I found most interesting was the contrast between how the two protagonists dealt with the issues and between each other. It seemed to me that the Rabbi was exceptionally aggressive, loud, and directly personal throughout the debate, often smearing Hitchens without being able to back up his assertions. The adapted quote, "Methinks he dost protest too much" comes to mind.

An elderly woman I knew who died a few years ago was a Christian and a wonderful person who was always helping people. Her only child had died of meningitis aged 3. She believed absolutely that she would meet him again in the afterlife. How could I have told her that that was nonsense? As for the penis trimming, it horrifies me too. But you can understand why it has become a self-perpetuating tradition. We all like to think that our parents are intelligent and love us and only act in our best interests. It follows that we can't bear to think that they would deliberately harm us out of stupidity, or community pressure (supposedly from a community that also loves and cares for us) or worst of all out of malice. In fact it becomes an emotional necessity to believe they mutilated our genitalia for a loving and rational reason. And so we convince ourselves that genital mutilation is a good and necessary thing that we must continue with future generations. And so the madness and stupidity just goes on and on.

Shmuley's intellectual dishonesty in this debate is so bad that he deliberately misinterprets or misleads clearly explained theories to support his own view.
I've seen many debates with respectable rabbis, and the fact that this guy is an ordained one really just lowers the bar for all of them. Hitchens himself even says that the Jews are the most challenging opponents in a debate, as one of their tenets is scepticism, which is to question everything. He also says it's why so many Jews become atheists.
I'd be surprised if a large part of the Jewish community did not condemn Shmuley for his blatant lies and dishonesty.

I've seen quite a few Hitchens debates but Rabbi Boteach appears to be one of his most unpleasant opponents. He completes the entire series of fallacies and breaches of good conduct that are so ubiquitous amongst apologists: Ad hominem, misrepresentation of facts, scientific theories and what other people said, quote mining, outright internal inconsistencies in his arguments, invented "facts" and much more. One could write down his speech verbatim and then debunk every single sentence he has uttered. Top this off with a voice (and volume) that makes one fear for his health and you've got the prototype of how not to conduct a debate.
