Why Facebook Marketplace Sales Are Down

- I've felt like Facebook Marketplace sales were much worse in 2022 than 2021. In this video, I pulled the data to see if my feelings match the facts.

It’s not just sales. There are zero views! Not a single person viewed a couple hundred of my listings. Something was definitely going on!
No lie! If not for my regular customers that follow me I'd have no sales!
Ours just started from 25k views a week to only local views we had Meta on the phone 4 times saying there is nothing wrong no flags or anything
We were selling 25+ pairs of shoes a week for 4 months straight shipping went down they fixed it now no views
We've updated over 250 listings we've done everything

2 days after watching your video. I went in and added local pickup to all my items. I can not beleive what happened. When I went in, I had 131 clicks in 7 days. With in 30 hours, I had over 2,000 clicks and 4 sales. Thank you so much Amber for your advice. I appreciate it so much.
Wow!
You're correct. When the stimulus checks dried up sales dropped like a stone! East Des Moines here!
My main platform used to be fbmp. I would sell items as fast as I could list them-sometimes 10-15 per day! Then about 6 months ago it came to an abrupt halt. Now I don’t even bother crosslisting there and I haven’t even missed it.
Where do you sell?
That's depressing 😢
Exact same with me. Whole time I knew it was too good to be true
My sales are down on Facebook too. I haven’t even had a sale this year and I have over 600 listings on it. I remember I used to list certain items like torrid or crocs and they would literally sell same day if not same week I listed it. It’s been super slow. I’ve been thinking of deleting all my listings. Last year my gross sales were almost $15k on Facebook so it was my number #2 platform but the last half of the year slowed wayyyy down.
Thank you for posting this video. 2021 was a pretty good year for us on FB marketplace...almost entirely local sales. 22 was slightly worse. 23 has been HORID! Almost no action at all. Even the scammers have stopped. We cannot figure out what has accounted for this. We have started donating alot of items just because we can't keep storing all the inventory. It has REALLY hurt our overall business. We also sell fulltime on ebay. We are still at a loss to understand why local sales just stopped all at once in the beginning of the summer 2023...it was as if a switch was turned off.
I've averaged around 1 sale per month since July 2022 and the other week I only had 5 clicks on listings in that 7 day span! I was making daily sales in 2021
I feel the same way about FBMP last year. But they are clearly fiddling with the platform because I've noticed some changes in the formatting and I think it may be positive. I started getting more regular sales there at the holidays which is typical but since then it's really picked up and I'm starting to have almost daily sales there which is awesome. I think I sold 5 items there last week, maybe 6, and this has been going on since Christmas so almost 3 weeks now. I'm primarily a clothing seller and I haven't had much luck with clothing there but shoes had always done well. Now both are selling so I'm pleased. I hope the trend continues
Thank you for sharing Amber. I cross list some of my items there & it has definitely has slowed down. It seems like the only interest I have had recently are from scammers unfortunately. I still will list there for the same reasons you shared. Thanks again & your lilting one is adorable!
Appreciate the analytical breakdown, as always! I haven’t crosslisted anything to FBMP in maybe a year except for things I’m only doing local pickup on (bulky or furniture type items).
Over 3000 sales total on other platforms and have never sold anything on FB Marketplace. This was a good reminder, I paused the video and deleted my items there.
One day in early 2022 I suddenly started getting zero views on all of my FBMP listings. I stopped listing there this fall.
I stopped selling on FBMP about a year ago now. I don't like local pick up and only did shipping. I just wasn't making enough to justify still listing there and the fact the listings have be relisted which I hated. Your baby is adorable
I always love your videos. I appreciate how much effort you put in to analyzing things and gathering data! I don’t sell much on FB, it’s always been crickets for me… but I will say as a buyer on it I hate that is defaults to local because I live in the middle of nowhere! I want to see items that can ship to me haha
I haven't had a sale on FBMP in months! I crosslist most of my items with Vendoo, it only takes me a second to list it. I have over 1000 listings. 😐
Same!
Thanks for addressing this issue- I thought it was just me! Sales were never great for me on FBMP but there were at least a few here and there… I honestly don’t think I’ve had a sale there in over a month- no views, nothing…. It’s disappointing and frustrating because I don’t know what’s going on!
Cute baby!! I think one also has to factor in market saturation. A new shiny selling platform has fewer sellers so sales are good, then it gets hyped up, and soon there are lots of sellers and only so many top spots. There'll always be a leveling out after the honeymoon is over, and that is likely happening now.
I get 90 percent of my sells on Fb Marketplace. I sell mostly plus size clothes. My Poshmark sells are dead & they have been dead. Mercari is even doing better than Posh. I absolutely LOVE my Fb Marketplace Customers, they are the BEST! Wow I am from Des Moines, IA.
I think you are spot on on your reasoning. When my sales on FBMP stopped I had had an uptick in local people who asked to do meet-ups and all my listings are shipping only.
Thank you for this! I thought I was the only one! I do sell on FB Marketplace, but I've stopped listing because of all the glitches. Many times, my "Buy Now" button is greyed out and I can't tell on my end. And for the past month or so I've not been able to list with shipping and can no longer edit the shipping on my items already listed. It makes me sad because I sold more clothes on FB (with shipping) than on Poshmark, eBay or Mercari. I've reached out to FB support, but they are no help at all. So, because of all the glitches and mainly for the fact that I can't list with shipping anymore I'm pretty much quitting FB unless I have a big item or a clothing lot that I think may sell locally.
Yes, I also had given up on Facebook Marketplace, but now that you mention about the local listings, I think I will update all my listings to included local pickup. I recently moved to Texas and there are a lot of garage sale buy and sell local groups that might help things sell faster.
I’m glad I’m not the only one! My sales on FBMP have been almost nonexistent for months! Also, they keep flagging my items when I go to renew them and there is no way get in touch with a human to sort it out. They are literally flagging Disney pins and stuffed animals🤷♀️
If you're selling branded items from high profile brands like Disney you're lucky they are only flagging unless you have a reseller agreement.
@@jangloersen2691 totally not the point but thanks for the lecture.
I enjoy your videos. Always so well done and analytical. Thank you for the quality.
Thumbnail really said it all for me. Haven’t had a sale for a while.
My sales are way down as well. I’m wondering if inflation has a lot to do with people just buying items they pretty much have to have instead of things they would enjoy having? Thank you for your videos.
Great video. I sell on your same platforms and yes, FBMP hasn't been great for 2022. I also saw a decrease from the summer on.
Question- Of your 20% of sales on FBMP how many are local meet ups and how many are being shipped out?
I'm not adding anymore to the platform, but I'm not quitting it either. That's where I started so a lot of my first listings are only there. A jacket I had almost 2 years finally sold last week to a local girl for $10. (I paid $8) Bye Felicia!
The new stuff gets priority on being listed on PM and eBay rather than redoing the old stuff. 2023 goals.
I completely stopped listing on FBM over 2 months ago, l only list on eBay, poshmark and Mercari. Maybe you should give Mercari a try, I know a lot of people don’t like it but honestly I do better there than poshmark.
Same. I would suggest adding Mercari Amber.
Same.
Yup, but I’m not overjoyed about the new postage increases. Might use pirate ship from time to time now.
I've had more success with mercari that FB marketplace lately.
Hi Amber. I love your videos as I am a data collector as well. In 2022 60% of my sales came from Poshmark, 23% from Mercari, 15% from FBMP and the rest from Offer-up. I do notice that non-clothing items do better on FBMP. I sell a lot of books FBMP while Poshmark is my big seller for clothing. Keep up the good work.
I love your videos. They are so insightful and full of great info. Thank you for showing your beautiful baby! Her eyes are the prettiest blue! I hope he will go to flipcon this year so I can meet you in person. It’s going to be in August, but Hairy Tornado not released the date yet.
I don't sell on Facebook Marketplace other than selling locally and only large items like furniture. However, I love watching your videos and analytical breakdown!
Great content it really helped me to know whether or not it's worth selling, with shipping, on marketplace. I currently have been only selling on Ebay for over 2 years but now will try cross listing.
I sell easily transported furniture locally on FB because its free to sell there. And you can often get more views than even a promoted listing on Ebay.
The fact your in Iowa makes me so happy. I have friends that tell me I should make videos just because we live in the Midwest. Vs like California or New York 😊
I used to love FBMP and made great money on there. Shipping only. The last 6 months have been terrible. I can’t get anything to sell even at a lower price than my other platforms. I gave up and am no longer listing there
Thank you for the video, my sales from FB has significally dropped since October, I only sold 1 sale in Novemember and nothing in December. But the first week of January, I sold 3 locals, and 1 shipped item. My sales in Posh and Ebay also have been dropping. I think on posh is because of the live sales my sales have dropped. I have no idea what's going on with eBay.
Great video! I’m over FBMP. I only do a few local pickup large items there.
I quit selling on FBMP within the last year. But I do put larger items for local pickups. Also... I actually prefer it popping up local listings first as most of the time I'm looking for something I can pick up quick and local!
Oh wow, Amber...you daughter is SO DARLING!❤ I only sell locally (large stuff) on FBMP and haven't listed anything lately.
Also have noticed a huge drop! I was just wondering today if it’s even worth it anymore. I’m going to pay closer attention to the data over the next few months.
I went from 20+ sales per day to 3-5 per week by May. Then the glitches started happening…. I lost hundreds of pictures, found hundreds of duplicate listings… It just wasn’t worth my time to try to fix so I closed my FBM store in August.
My sales are very down from 2021. Everything you say makes sense. I try to ship only as I don't want to deal with local meet up as there are a lot of scams. Changing the default to local makes a big difference to me. I have mostly sold to out of area. My specialty is vintage glass, pottery and other items including vintage Christmas & Mid-Century Modern decor.
I think its worth keeping FB marketplace going even if you only get a sale or 2 once in awhile. I sold a pair of nwt and box crocs and local pickup last fall 2022. Also sold pair of gently used Frye boots with shipping within my state around Thanksgiving 2022. Was definitely worth selling these on marketplace. They were also listed on Poshmark. I also like how fees are lower on marketplace! Happy selling!!
I don’t sell on FBMP, and I don’t plan to sell there….especially after seeing this video. I live in a very small town, so local sales would not be enough to make the crosslisting time worthwhile for me. Helpful video!!
Oh Amber...Your baby girl is so precious and such beautiful blue eyes. Sales on FBMP started going down for me last June. However, they have picked up for me during the last three months. I will continue to keep crosslisting there as it doesn't take much time. It also doesn't take much time to renew and delete and relist current listings. Thanks for your videos.
Hi there and thank you for the video. I just went back looking at mine numbers on last week and realized that I had not had a sale since September 2022. I ran across your video today while looking at subscription updates and notice that you were speaking on this very thing. I don’t like the option of Boloco as I am not yet comfortable after two years of selling with the idea of people coming to my house. If I were to do meeting at a local location, it would mean driving for every cell. Is there a way that you or anyone reading this does something different when doing local sales? Meaning, instead of them coming to your home what other options do you use to meet people for a sale? further, do you accept cash, Zell, etc.? I really wanted to just take my closet down. I’ve been looking at other options like Etsy, Depop, and Tradesy. I currently sell on Poshmark, eBay, Mercari, and Facebook marketplace. Mercari is down quite a bit as well. Sorry for the long comments.
Well this explains why I had a lot of people during the last couple of months that I was selling on there that wanted to pick up the item locally. 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
I loved seeing the baby, she is adorable ❣️
I find your videos so interesting.
I know this was posted months ago but wanted to give you my updates from myself being an avid seller on FBMarketplace since the fall of 2020. Sales were amazing until this past fall (2022) where my seasonal job ends and I would sell items on fbmarketplace and it would keep me afloat. This fall I was unable to stay afloat. Sales were down like everyone else but I just looked and I had a total of 3 sales the entire month of June. Granted I am working full time- I live in a tourist area and can’t put in my 100% into it but even this spring I can see a decline. March of this year I had 45 sales. April 17 sales. It slowly got worse and worse. May 7 sales and June 3 sales. So far for July- I’ve had 2. My theory is - stimulus checks are gone. Child tax credits are gone. No more spending money. Also all my listings say shipping and local pickup. Still sloooooow!
It's the same with me. I went from daly sells, high views to amost nothing. Thinking about just getting out of the resale business for now.
Never tried fbmp because I don't like doing local. Baby is adorable :)
Thank you for this video! I thought I was the only one...lol I don't like selling locally, maybe FBMP will see the frustration from everyone and fix the problem
I did have shipping only on all my items. I went from fbmp being my #2 platform to just nothing. I stopped listing all together there now. I may eventually start again, but it felt like a waste of time.
You've completely saved my business! After watching this I changed all my listings to add Local along with shipping and Instantly started getting sales again like an hour later! I went close to a whole month without sales, my business was booming before facebook changed things! But now I'm back, I've gotten 32 sales in 2 days(I sell pokemon cards). Thank you for this video and the research that you do!!!🙏🏼🙌
Are most of your transactions local pick up? I find there is more back and forth.
@@lindalaffan949 98% online orders
Absolutely! FB marketplace I used to sell so much before 2022! What the hell is that? Economic recession?
I am still cross-listing to FBMP but probably won't be for much longer. I don't want to do meetups because people are so flaky and unreliable. How many of your sales are local pickups vs shipped? I agree that this is probably a big part of why sales have dropped. I also don't think most people think of it as a platform for having things shipped to you, they think of it as more a garage sale and they expect prices to be very low.
I also don't like having to renew and relist as often as it's required there. I have too many listings and platforms to keep up with it.
I have tried selling on FBMP but unless it is for local pickup type items only, I have never sold a shipped listing (if that makes sense). And with my local pickup listings I find that it can be similar to Craigslist wherein you get people who express interest but then don't show up. My experiences as a buyer on FBMP has been filled with some not so great experiences. Buying items where the seller ends up never actually shipping the item or getting items that are not in the described condition. And FBMP is similar to Poshmark in that they do not have a direct customer service number to call and you are forced to communicate via email. I have had to sit and fight with them to get my money refunded and more often than not, I have had to file a dispute with my credit card company. So I really have been left with a lack of overall confidence in purchasing items on the platform. If other buyers are having similar experiences this could also be a possible explanation for the decrease in sales. You know the whole "once bitten twice shy" analogy.
Excellent analysis as always, Amber. I don't cross list to FB so I have nothing to add, except how cutie baby girl with her hiccups made me smile.
I don’t list on FB but I like scrolling local to find some good items to pick up and about 4 months ago, they switched my filters to search by shipping only or shipping and local! They completely took away my option for local only which sucks with the way I like to search for items. Maybe they are testing some things?
OMG my numbers are finally validated. FB was so good for me in 2021. 2022 started good but by August it was horrible. November was fair and December was horrible.I have not sold anything on there for 11 daYS.
I took down all my FBMP listings. There wasn’t one sale for over a month.
Thanks for sharing. Your little one is darling!
I took all my listing down from there due to no activity.
Hiya Amber! Omg I’ve been dealing w/ so much truly insane stuff (it’s legally settled in my favour🤐) I didn’t know you had a baby! What a blessing! She’s so scrummy😍 it makes me😃! What’s her name (if you don’t say, I respect that), how old is she (same) & can I babysit even tho I live in NY🤪? May her life blessed; I know you & hubby are feeling that way😃! Interesting, around Aug/Sept, I noticed I was only getting local listings for items I wanted to buy. Once things are more sorted (we had a house🔥no one hurt but a mess everywhere now) I was going to sell big stuff like furniture (that isn’t smoke damaged) on there which would be local, but I wanted to try w/ other small things as well (nothing like losing your memories to make you want to get rid of everything!) now I wonder if it’s worth it? 🤷🏼♀️I suppose it can’t hurt to try! Best of luck w/ your new family! Jet 🧡🎸🎶⚡️🏍🧚♂️🦇🤘
I pulled all 1000 items I cross post to FB down at end of 2022 bcuz the sight is just too klunky!! I would delete stuff but it would never really be gone! When I relist it would duplicate the listing. Or when I relist it would say my clothing item goes against policy! So frustrating!
I took all my listing down from FB. Your baby is adorable!
Oh my goodness I had to comment on your baby, she is just precious
Yep considering stopping there completely. 30 views a week on 100 items - when I started it was 10,000 views then 6 months ago about 3000 views now almost none. Sucks
All I ever got were would be scammers contacting me . I'm in Canada, and still was contacted by scammers from over seas countries . Namely UK , Pakistan and India. Why ????
No it’s Facebook! I haven’t had any sales in wells! Started great but recently they wanted me to boost and after trying it doesn’t work! I know why sales dropped, Facebook is promoting big biz ads .. when I started selling they were showing all our items but now you don’t see clothing hardly! Now it’s window companies and cars etc!
Your baby is Beautiful 🤩
5:59 p.m.
I started selling on FB 2021 ( steady) Sales were good . 2022 sales more consistent . I've had just a handful of zero sales , where I go 1-3 days with no sales .. here in 2023 i've experienced a 4 day stretch with no sales-- Its a new year, tough year for all $ wise in my OP.. will this be a new trend for 2023? The only thing i've noticed different ,my labels are no longer being sent to my email.. is this a change on MP? i'm able to generate one from messenger if that was to fail how would one generate a label? This just happened this past week.. Thank you for any info you could provide..
I'm not sure how to add local. I've had a terrible time the last few months selling.
hey amber facebook use to be amazing for me and now its stopped
I do like Facebook Marketplace a lot. I put all household stuff, Furnitures, and Clothes. I do think if I put varieties of category in it, You will have a lot of traffic there. I think it is better than offer up. I never have a chance to sell anything of offer up app at all.
My sales dropped from 11k to 3k from 2021 to 2022, currently I get very little views or none at all unless I boost my listing and pay for advertising
i kmow i read they reduced their staff, i really wanted to make fbmp work. hoping there are positive changes gong to be made
This is good to know. I was considering FB marketplace.
It’s so weird to here someone say hose towns. I grew up there and no one ever talks about that area unless I bring it up.
BABY 😍😍😍
Hi Amber so my question is not really related to the drop in sales although I really appreciate your info as I have been wondering why for no reason, crickets. Do you by chance know the rules for selling fragrances? I see tons of posts however mine continues be declined. I've read their "Community Standards" and cannot see why I wouldn't be able to. Just thought you may know? If you do please let me know. Thanks so much.
Because perfume is flammable it can’t be shipped on a plane. I’m not familiar with Facebook’s rules but I am familiar with poshmarks and eBay’s. Poshmark doesn’t let you sell perfume because everything goes by plane through priority mail. eBay lets you sell it but you have to choose a “ground” shipping option. I’m assuming some similar reason is why Facebook isn’t letting you list it.
Your baby is so adorable 🥰
I was doing very well until about a month ago. I was averaging 20000 views a week and 2000 saves. Now, all my insights have tanked. I'm trying everything. Is there a way to add the local and shipping option in a bulk edit? Or do I have to go into every listing and change it? Thank you 🙂
I've never found a way to do bulk editing on FBMP. I've always listed with local pickup and shipping as options, since 2020, and in 2023 I'm down to about 1 sale a month. I don't think it's a game changer
My sales picked up in January when i switched to local and shipping. Then in February/March they tanked and are now non existent. I am considering dropping FBMP.
My FBMP sales have also been extra bad lately.
I can't even get clicks....
I'm glad I'm not alone with the slower sales on Facebook, but I do hope it picks back up. Now that you mention it, I have received more requests to pick up items locally (but they often do not show). Very well done video, Amber! Head over to my channel to see the items I sold on Facebook, Mercari, Poshmark and eBay :)
Have you noticed improvement yet?
Curious as I just started 3mos ago and it's very random but could be the bad economy Or I haven't been pricing for this Group appropriately- but I'm not willing to sell quality items for 50% of its value because FB Marketplace doesn't attract Buyers willing to spend asking price or at least be Reasonable about Offers... 🤔
Your baby is so precious 😊
Amber you need to work for Facebook marketplace.. you’d fix things in a heartbeat 🤷🏻♀️
Ah your baby is so cute
today is May 8, 2023, 3 months from the future. How is FBMP doing? is it getting better, or is it getting even worse?
Please let comment
The same for me. Not many sales but still getting a couple here and there. Actually just listed a pair of Lululemon shorts on FBMP on Saturday and got three offers on them within 24 hours. They were also listed on Poshmark and eBay at the same price with no action.
Amber Resells 😇🙏
I dont say this as a brag but over 50% of my sales in Jan have been from FB. Not sure why it has slowed down for others
I will also say, my views on FB are nearly 5x my eBay views
I think the economy has caused sales to stop
It's definitely dead. My sales are down dramatically.
I stopped selling on FBMP because 90% of all people are scammers and others just want to play games with you.
People are Market Place are just cheap they dont want to spend money
I was making some money in 2021, started mid march, made about 8k profit, although things started downhill end of Sept.
Was getting only about 2500 views a week 3 to 6 sales a day (cpl times 10-12) and just had 300 to 500 listings.
It had been scaling up, until Sept and I had planned to try to build to 25k-29k a year, was at 1.2k a month for a cpl months when everything collapsed.
2022 had 1k listings, 600 to 1250 views a week started out 30 sales a month, then 15, then 8, last half of 2022 about 1 sale a month. I lost about 1k on overhead all of 2022, zero profit.
I switched to include local a few months ago, was only shipping, 4th qtr still 1-2 sales a month, this year I have rcvd 8 sales in 3 weeks. But since putting local pickup, I receive thousands of messages, half are scammers and only 1 or 2 out of 1,000 messages actually leads to a sale. But I am still actually just shipping, I don't feel safe in this city doing meetups.
After spending the entire year selling on FBM in 2022 just to lose money, if things don't pick back up at least to 2021 levels, it's just going to be too much a waste of time for me to bother with. And Meta support, other than getting account unlocked from their You Can No Longer Buy Or Sell, because of Unusual Activity glitch, is near non extistent, they just waste time and send canned responses, not fixing issues with your account. They're either dishonest or incompetent.
