Is this the best album closer from Opeth?

Its great for sure, but I think Blackwater Park is the all time greatest closer🙌🖤💀

This song has many elements of my fav album, Orchid... which seems to be the "black sheep" in terms of fan reception. I find it contains many of the same elements, but shifted towards a little more prog than death.
I like those long pauses where "nothing" happens and you just get these sound stages. It's part of what I love about early Opeth, very ATMOSPHERIC and MOODY.

The live version of this from Syndey 2011 is really great. Its the "no growls" live concert. Cool variety they do for the set on the Heritage tour.

Opeth. Opeth opeth opeth... what a band.
I find that they divide their fanbase in a way, but not in such a bad way. As much as I'm a little bit more "old-schooler" in terms of the albums I like, they offer something incredible for pretty much a wide variety of ears.
Personally, my emotions speak louder than 'technicality' wants; so I'm a pretty avid listener of Orchid (which I find is by far, their most atmospheric album = fav), Morningrise and Blackwater Park.

Watershed's extended version features, amongst a bunch of covers, Derelict Herds. It's an original song from the same sessions, and fully in the same vein. In my mind, it is the real album closer, or at the very least should be put after Hessian Peel. Suffice it to say, I do recommend the track. Regardless, you had great reactions and I appreciate you guys sticking with the record.

With this album, imho, Mikael has musically represented a mental struggle with whether to take the band in its new direction. As such, it musically represents both sides.
Watershed is confusing and chaotic, calm and contemplative. Sorrow for something lost and worry for the future show through. In Hex Omega, he has arrived at acceptance.
I do personally prefer the older material, but there is something special about the new Opeth as well. I thought Heritage was a fantastic album. I didn't get along very well with Pale Communion and Sorceress was okay, but In Cauda Venenum was another real banger. I might not prefer what Opeth is now over what it was before, but I respect the hell out of Mikael for doing it and for following his artistic passion, and risking so much to do it.
Watershed is my favorite Opeth album because it is both the before and the after as one. It is change in progress, bare for us to see, and to experience emotionally with him. Thanks for going down the rabbit hole of Opeth's Watershed with me! 🤘😎

Same here! While this, personally, is not the album I listen to the most, it's pretty dramatic in shift I find. Marks a turning point as you mentioned. Not bad, nor good. As much as I'm more a fan of 'death' and their older works, I don't think bands that stagnate is good, neither for the evolution of the band, nor for the band members themselves.
Glad to see someone who can understand that music isn't something that is always stuck in the [put year here] and things go in different directions, but stay at an incredibly high level of quality.
What is your fav old album?
For myself, I thin Orchid takes the crown, quickly followed by Blackwater Park and Morningrise.
What I really like about Orchid, is the incredible atmosphere. I FEEL like I'm in an unending heavy fog , can't see anything around me, but the fog.

@@GODSPEEDseven Fav old album is really hard to choose! I do really love Orchid, and it might have been my favorite if the production on it was a bit better (not their fault, first album and all, and still excellent music), but I'm really into My Arms, Your Hearse, and Deliverance also. Blackwater Park was my entry into Opeth and just a masterpiece. I think it's fair to claim it's their overall best album.
Of their new material, I prefer In Cauda Venenum, with Heritage close behind.

@@michaelclements5793 I'm maybe a little bit of "black metal" person, so.. to me the "poor" productions values of "Orchid" are actually pretty good... hahahaha.. that's just to show how poor production in black metal is, lol!
Hard to say, yes! I agree. sometimes I go between albums. Sometimes, My Arms Your Hearse is the one.. sometimes, Morningrise with the epic "Black Rose Immortal". That was always one of my favorites.
It seems to be among the most unknown songs of the band. 20 minutes of pure bliss... nothing to scoff at in my opinion!

      @@michaelclements5793 I have to add...
there are those moments where ONLY Damnation does the trick. That album is pretty incredible. My father, who would just not want to even hear anything of Death became a "fan" of Opeth, because of Damnation.
Those rainy days... driving.. that album hits a spot.

@@GODSPEEDseven sometimes black metal production becomes so bad its actually good, it kind of goes full circle. have you heard darkspace 3? 🤣 theres large parts of the album where you cant even make out any of the drums beyond the kick, the rest is just lost in the guitars and screaming. its amazing, just a blizzard of cosmic evil.
that said, i would have loved to hear them completely rerecord orchid from scratch around this era.
