I just wish his bass drums were louder.
They sounded Fucking perfect in 4 horseman I wished they played that song More best song off kill em all
Ya
@@CarlosGonzalez-sz4jh man four horsemen is played all the time
Sounds better if the snare is loud
Mtf here in Chile the bass drum was heavy as fuck, lars rules man.
ride the lightning sounds so awesome with double bass
Oh yeah!
That double bass in RTL has been there always, listen to 80s live version or the drum track isolated
Yep. The double bass is in the original too
Most Metallica songs sound better with double bass.
Every video associated with Lars will bring out all these so called drumming experts. Can he double bass? Yes. Does he always? No. Is there more to drumming than double bass? Yes. He's a good drummer and one of the most influential drummers in his genre. His talent goes beyond playing drums and into producing, writing, composing etc....
I wouldn't mind as much that he can't play as fast as he used to, if he just tried to stay closer to the originals without making up strange drum fills that don't fit the song.
Shamic Entertainment If you want to hear the original go listen to it
Thank you for saying this. There is SO much more than how fast you can do a beat. Some of the best Metallica songs have easy drum parts. This is a sign of quality composition. With the right emphasis that is correctly tied to the music, even a simple beat can be beautiful. Orion. Enter sandman. Etc.
Lmfao!!!
As a drum teacher I agree 100% with you, those who talk shit about Lars don't know nothng about drumming and music.
No Lars, no Metallica, no KEA/RTL/MOP/AJFA. The math is simple.
AdamDaBomb11 you forgot the black album
@@gamejunk2707 he was amazing during the black album
The black album he started to show some of his traits. The pauses, the weirdly timed fills, the in and out of double time instead of a traditional fill. There is some very cool playing on there. It may be simple but no other drummer could have played better on that album
3:02 holy fuck
Ethan Byrne listen to joey jordison. He's my favorite drummer fast raw aggression

Fight fire with Fire was brutal...
How is everyone STILL hating on Lars?
idk i like him
A lot of jealous people... I envy the guy tho.. He's happy with what he dose, and makes a decent paycheck, I can respect that..
Eazy E why so racist man
Eazy E uhhhhhhh, I like metallica more than megadeth
Caleb i bet you could never be like the legends you are seeing
Leper messiah was insane jesus christ
Lol okay.
+daJimsterfy 513 one of the best 'tallica songs for sure
Where did they play leper messiah in the video?
1:51
i liked Lars respond, he was the best and he taught all the rest how its done. long live METALLICA!!!
XD
lars is a legendary drummer, even though he has gotten rusty over the years he can still show us otherwise.
can you say that a bit louder for the 12 year-old's in the back who have never seen a drum kit in person once in their lives?
The guy is in his 50's and he still plays like this. Legend!
Dude, Lars can't do 100 BPM without fucking up? Go listen to these
1. Dyers eve.
2. Fight fire with fire.
3. Whiplash.
4. Damage Inc.
5. Battery.
I know there are other drummers who can do faster double bass and even overall faster drumming. Lars said it himself. But its about serving the song. Whether you're soloing, writing, or just fucking around, you can't just whack the drums fast as you can. You post legit reasons why Lars' drumming is bad. But overall, he isn't bad. He's fucking awesome. I don't recall guys like Joey Jordison or Mike Portnoy having caliber songs like Master of Puppets, One, Creeping Death, or Shortest Straw. People don't need to like Lars , say he's the best metal drummer, or play his songs. People need to respect his work as a writer and drummer. I look forward to debate reasons why my favorite drummer is good, bad, or in between. I hope to be fair to all reasons and don't say he's awesome without proof. Long live metallica
Dude...you are a god.
..... But he sucks now.
Jazmin Mars Yeah well, he doesn't give a fuck, he is 51
back in the 80s he was at his 20s..
Olon Key he did a lot of coke and he DID age. I mean, 1963 - 2015 is not equal to 23, does it?
+Jazmin Mars Why do you have a picture of me? :v
0:26 - when he's willing he can do a perfect double-bass line
3:45
Look how steady those knees are, Jesus. He knows his technique but still he can't please everyone
@@GuitarBoi Back then they were doing 3 hours shows of 3 years touring straight.
Thats something people need to realize that its not something easy to keep up
@@NissardpertugiuI wonder how many Lars haters can do what he does for 3 hours every night? Easy answer none
If he does all those double bass in a concert, his leg would die
CPT. Warren check out meshuggah
MiguelFigueroaBand Yeah,he is great drummer.Shame for him, because other band members are untalented bitches that can only play opentrings over and over again and all other downtuned shit.
@@user-sl1ht4fr2d lol funny joke man
Damage Inc holy shit
your profile pic made it even better xD
I love Lars Ulrich
Me too
I wish there was more camera time spent on him throughout the 80s and 90s. His hair was absolutely gorgeous during those days 😍
everyone has to agree that Lars when he was young was pretty fucking insane on the drums
He's nearly 50, he's played over 2000 shows, played around 5000+ hours and who knows how many hours in the studio. He's toured the world relentlessly, written some great lyrics, some of his beats are just sick and to do all of that in a band that is as intense as Metallica...it's just great! Lars may not be as amazing as he was 25 years ago (he admitted so himself) but the guy is a great drummer.
IMO the Seattle 89 version of Fade To Black has the best case of Lars's double bass, during the outro solo
AntonyPancake you can even hear that on the album. If he isn't a top 10 drummer for someone (1 through 10 are basically interchangeable too. I'd argue) he is absolutely the undisputed most talented douchebag in the history of mankind.
Heard that one Antony..... It was just awesome 💖💖
Priceless midle finger at the end! :D

I honestly would put St. Anger beside Justice because it is Lars' most insane drum work since Justice in my opinion, actually beating out the first 3 of their albums (at least for me). I do respect that.
@@marcthedashergd6321 it’s a shame that the ringing snare overshadowed his drum work, there’s actually some decent double bass in st.anger
Lars was pure, rugged thrash drumming. In his day he was extraordinary. Someone had to set the bar for othr drummers like my self, and that he did. Metaica rules forevr!
I was hoping the Nimes and Mexico concerts in 2009 would be there, thanks for putting it on. These 2 are probably the best Metallica shows in 21st century, as well as 2 Lars's best performances in a long time.
Ulrich is a pioneer, a legend and "...and justice for all" is a masterpiece, few drummers played like that at that time (1988). My all-time favourite drummer, the one who made me wan to play drums and especially double bass. Lots of respect to the guy.
What about Disposable Heroes? Lars definitely did double bass there
Who cares what the Haters say ! Lars will always be my favourite !
Yeah its kinda easy to forget that once upon a time Lars was a pioneer of thrash drumming and was really good at it
Right on dude! Love the video and the last piece!!! Perfecto!
Lars is a drum god, all haters shall DIE! Lars 1989 is especially his most godlike drum apperance.
This is great! Contrary to many peoples beliefs I love Lars and he will forever be in my list of top drummers.
It's amazing to hear Lars giving that sweet, sweet double bass. Weirdly, it feels like another Metallica, when he does it!
... like the ending very well said,,,,,,, awsome vid BTW very well put together
fight fire with fire is amazing
The Four Horsemen rules!
as a teenager lars was my favourite but he's went down hill so much...i don't hate him because of this...just wish his great drumming skills would return!
promisedlandcc its due to fame and not practicing, however now he's back on fire!
promisedlandcc its because he stopped playing tennis..
deathray55 yeah finally. Go Lars!

Audition problem in 1995 too.
Thanks a lot! It sounds awesome!
Lars has electrifying passion, fire, heart , attitude and very own original style, him and Cliff are my heroes. Respect
GO LARS!!!!
LARS RULES!!!!!! If you don't agree just keep your mouth shut!
Sandra Wolfe heck yeah!!!!
Booo
Fuck yeah!
totally..
That was a cool compilation...reminded me that I've seen every one of their tours going back to '86. Still got my 'Puppets tour program wrinkled from having it in my shirt in the moshpit in Verdun QC. Shit I'm getting old...and so are they. ~35 years and still pounding... Nothing but respect for Metallica
I have to say, my favorite
I love how he can still do double bass pretty well :)
Double bass, for everyone's information is not an adequate measure of skill in drumming. Period. Speed is one thing, but when you don't really have a unique technique (which lars did at one time sort of have) it really shows. He used to be awesome. He needs to watch old footage or really LISTEN to his old stuff, maybe try to recapture that sound? Idk. I have no idea what the answer is for his now incredibly lack luster, sub-par, shitty sounding drumming. Even the awesome SOUND he used to have with TAMA is gone it seems. I hope it comes back... but it looks unlikely. This is coming from a huge fan and I'm a drummer myself, so tardboys please don't freak.
Derek Miller His American tour concerts in 2017 have a great sounding snares and also unique Double Bass lines
This is one of the most insightful comments I've seen on youtube
literally hardly any insight. this has been regurgitated over and over.

That Seattle 1989 gig is so goddamn good it's almost unfair to post it here. His performance on Battery was nothing short of legendary. Lars was having the night of his life, even if he was under the influence of smack. However, to overlook his obvious decline post 1993 is silly. Also, remember most recent live DVDs are post-produced to oblivion, so they're not really proof the guy can still pull the good stuff live.
The Dullahan he never used smack you fool fuck off w that shit.
The Dullahan no lars was a cokehead
The double bass in the whole ...and justice for all album is kicks ass! not just one!
Love It!
I don't hate on him definitely good in his time but I think he has got lazy and fame destroy his drive.but still think his and Vinnie Paul's kick drum sound is the best.. deep.bassy.and click.....
Chad Schooley cuz they're triggers.
no they are not, they use danmar pads
Vinnie Paul? 😂
Not comparable to the likes of Pete Sandoval, Paul Bostaph, Dave Lombardo or Gene Hoglan
but Lars is great songwriter and is a top notch song arranger
Chad Schooley ive always thought the same exact way. My favorite sound will always be vinnie paul's man
Uhm Lars can only do two things actually, uhm amazing drum playing and.. MAKING THE BEST HEAVY METAL BAND IN THE WORLD
That show in France was awesome!
Lars was at his best during "And Justice For All", album and touring.... I saw it, and he was spectacular on DB and fast timing/intricate patterns...
He is probably the only metal drummer who needs proofs that he can double bass. That means something...
This means that people prefer to focus on stupid memes about him than his real playing
Like im searching Igor cavalera playing 245bpm on arise with 8th note on hi hat live. As far as i know, Igor never play it. But nobody make any joke from it. Is it personal or what with Lars?
He doesn'r do it anymore like that....
But he's a hell of a drummer!
At least in the studio, hardwired has some killer drums in songs sunch as spit out the bone and lords of summer.
@@marcthedashergd6321Came back to respond to this twi years too late! Wish I could have told younger me to wise up! Lars is kicking ass today in modern time!
really nice
Awesome video, all hail Lars
HE IS THE FUCKING BEST!!
Tom Hunting
Actual Lars sucks.
But years ago, you can't deny that he was a fuckin' beast.
Random Channel I seen Metallica live early this year, he absolutely does not suck and played his beats and double bass with aggression and accuracy, it even surprised me! I know he's been practicing now!
Yeah, i gotta admit that from Death Magnetic to Hardwired, he became better.
But Kirk sucks now...
Random Metalhead yeah Kirk's gotten worse, his solos don't sound the same at all
kirk actually says in an interview that he has been afraid to that day when he can't think anything new...
and hardwired..to self distruct is that day
when he was writing solos for this album he just can't find anything new he just reorganize previous solos...
search youtube you will find his interview about this
Saw Metallica in may this year. Lars played double-bassdrums flawlessly
Lars is not the best, but he inspired the best! Love this video! \m/
why people n t like him?
+pierre sparow compare him to any metalcore or deathmetal drummer. He's just awful, extremely slow and very simplistic beats that are painfully repetitive.
+Natan Esau oh ok
+Natan Esau But he doesn't play death metal or core? Around the Justice era he was phenomenal.
people dislike him (including me sometimes and I am a huge fan) because he doesn't play the songs how they are supposed to, he does some unnecessary fills and he doesn't do double bass that much (if he does, it's just in some parts of the song) but whatever man, if i were to go to see metallica, i wouldn't give a horseshit about that and would enjoy the fucking concert
i d like to see them for real
I really don't care about this conspiracy, all I know is I've had (at least one) drum kit all my life; I've practiced a lot, played my share of gigs, and I've met a lot of great drummers. I like Metallica, but Lars just isn't a great musician. He obviously stopped being passionate about drums and music at a certain point, and since then Metallica's music and PR has suffered. It's sad because there's so many great drummers that never get discovered and we've got this guy in the lime light.
zac chinevere I swear you must be Lars himself.
zac chinevere actually someone gave it a thumbs-up and YOU were suckered into commenting...AGAIN! If you're so keen on hearing what I have to say; Listen man, I LIKE METALLICA! I have the collector's edition of "The Black Album" ..beautiful gatefold case on 120g vinyl because I like it that much. I kid you not. But Lars Ulrich is a shite drummer, medicore at best. My point is that the band could've been so much better with a truly talented and dedicated drummer (one that can at least hack 100bpm in 4/4 without choking). Absolutely no amount of replies, pestering or trolling is going to change my mind on that one. I'm sorry that you're so narrow-minded that you can't even understand why I and many other drummers hold this same opinion.
give some yours video on you tube ....:DDD we will see ...DDDD otherwise shut up f''''''''' r
I see you en every UA-cam video about Lars, c'mon man, I bet you've got better things to do right?
Tyran Idk whether you're talking about me or that clown "zack chinevere" (or whatever his name is). However it's ironic you mention it because I'm actually muting the posts right now. I certainly have WAY better things to do, but it's fun to watch these kids (sometimes grown men) defend a guy who 1.) they don't even know, and 2.) the guy is a complete asshole; I met him and the verdict is in. Lars is a talent-less, self-centered jerk. What's worse is he is not a good drummer; but of course, true to American way of life, he was one of the most popular, highest-paid drummers for well over a decade.
Lars is solid, awesome in his prime, now he's still quite good - what i enjoy about him: he changes drumparts every tour and is still fun to look at with is intense faces. he's entertainment; and, being a drummer myself, i can assure you speed is only half of what makes a drummer good ;-)
I don't care what others think about Lars! He has been a legend and will stay a legend no matter what. Thank you Lars for being there when we needed you
One is the best double bass experience metal ever had!
Lars has literally the hardest drumming job keeping up with James style…he’s one of the best at thrash, he created that…how can you hate??
Playing this type of drumming constant of course your gonna have times you mess up
@rockerduff1231 yes it is. first its blackened and then its the ending solo of fade to black.
Master!!!!!!!!!!
@METTAALLIICA I agree - my point is that some things are edited - absolutely normal for live productions. i love Lars!
@Docteur666 might I ask where you got that Lars info from? (about destroying his leg muscles) Not that I deny it, just curious.
@chestus12 on the original), Master of Puppets (we can heard the difference all the track), Dyers Eve (he played very on both version, strange ^^), Motorbreath (the same than Master of Puppets), Seek and Destroy (on DVD version, he puts some double bass sometimes). [SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH]
THE BEST OF THE BESTS!!!!!
@1uphydro do you say that on every drumming video that doesnt include blake richardson?
I had to wait til the end of the video😂
Lars simply rocks \m/
Back when his feet were in their prime :-(
King of Kings
thank you)
Lars is amazing!!
0:47 i know most of us came here for Lars, but dude even if i used 4 of my fingers i still would'nt be able to do that
love lars' face when he does the doublebase today xD
2:15 - Fuel
3:19 - Fade to Black
3:44 - Damage, Inc.
one of my fav lars double bass moments is when they did Blackened at the Nimes show
the battery one KILLED ME
Just because you play fast, doesn't mean you play good. That counts for every instrument.
With you on that mate
A good drumer who is in the band doesn´t just plays the drums!!! Being in a band means more!
Happy Birthday LARS !
thanks :)
Lars Ulrich, Master of the Double Bass and Master of Drum Beats
@URSSband I respect your experience and the fact that you play drums (i play as well). However, I listened to creeping death, not from the DVD, and I heard the double bass break. I listened to fade to black, not on the DVD, and the double bass started at 5:46. If you look at the DVD of fade to black at 5:46, while kirk is doing his solo, you can see lars' foot in the background doing the double bass. Now as for One, I'm sure he re-recorded that because he always messes up the double bass in
Where did you get the All Nightmare Long clip at 0:48? And Ride The Lightning at 1:20?
cunning stunts best drum sound ever
there is ONE youtube clip somewhere, of an HD live performance of Dyers eve, where lars is actually playing the double bass parts instead of his normal single kick punk beat that alternates between doubles and singles..
Lol you used my Video with Fade to Black and "Avatallica"... Awesome man!
Lars inspired some of them you meant you know. Lars kicked ass in 80s and 90s. and can still play a little the same today.
