Kellys Rambling Robot Repair! Fixing Irobot Roomba not charging on dock or sensing dock 650

  • This is a complete teardown, fix and re-assembly of an Irobot Roomba 650 model. It requires 1 replacement A/C jack you can find on ebay for cheap, and some basic tools to dis-assemble.
I realize the video is long, but i wanted to include taking it apart and putting it back together for anyone who hasn't done it or doesn't want to have to refer to other videos.

    READ BEFORE YOU BUY
    - there is no need to purchase a new port and wait for it to arrive. If you have only one charging cable, the safety feature is of no use to you anyway. So simply bypass it!
On the back of the charging port, the green PCB board has a BLACK, BROWN, and RED wire attached to it. The black and red are the bottom tab (ground/negative) and the center pole (positive, first contact on bottom), and the brown wire corresponds to the other charging contact on the bottom of the roomba. You simply need to jump the BLACK to the BROWN in any way you like! This permanently fixes the switch to be stuck "on" instead of off. If you don't have solder, you could simply remove the part entirely at the connector to the motherboard, and then bend the two prongs (for the BLACK and BROWN wires) together so they touch - or, leave just the wires (rip them off) and attach them together. If you have solder, you can solder these two prongs together, or if you want to leave the charging port in the machine (and have it still be usable) you can do as I did and solder the back of the port, right on the PCB. This also allows you to replace it with a new port later if you so desire. The two bottom-most (opposite the wires) blobs of solder correspond to the switch, you can try it out by jumping them together and watching it all work. Then just stick some new solder between these two points and viola! Permanently fixed, and you can still charge from the side :)
    - there is no need to unscrew the handle, as in the video (and yes, it's a handle!)
    - there is no need to unscrew the WHEELS at all, you can leave those too!

That's right. I screwed the Roomba motherboard trying to replace a component. I bought a "new" one that come with that charging connector (original mine doesn't have it). you only need to bridge the left and center connector on the motherboard already installed on the roomba body.

Thanks man!! i have a roomba 655, this model DOES NOT COME WITH THE FAST CHARGING PORT ON THE SIDE.
But before I found your video i changed the motherboard, which it does come without the side charging connector on the board (I would show you the pics if I could), so i went and bought the jack-wire-connector you recommended , connected to the mother board, mounted on the side, poked a hole, and VOILA charges all good. So thanks to your help i did not only fixed the problem , but also i added functionality))) IM happy!!!
PS1:Because on my personal journey with this thing, i took it apart and put it back together 3 times, and i can tell you don't need to take the bottom subassemblies out. just the bumper and the top circular pieces until you get to the mother board
PS2: Much appreciation to you, for being the ONLY GUY that that does not says: Make sure is plugged ..or that kind of useless help that most of blogs suggest
PS3: i agree with Kelly that Roomba built these to be fixable, so don't be afraid to do the job yourself , accouple of pictures and drawings will help you take it apart and put it back together w/o much trouble.

Thanks so much for this video! I never would have suspected the direct charging port, especially since it was working fine when plugged in. In my case I simply had some dust in that port, a simple toothpick swizzle sorted it out and my Roomba is docking again. Long live Roomba!

Excellent demo, but this problem is far easier to solve by just squirting switch cleaner into the socket on the side of the robot, push plug in and out a couple of times, and presto, now docks fine again. The problem is just a dirty contact, no strip down needed. So give this a try first!

Thank you for this video!! Excellent job and tutorial.
I will say to anyone trying this, before you do try the cleaning the jack port trick. I sprayed mine for a good 30 seconds with compressed air. I was shocked at how much dust came out of that port. I then used a paper towel rolled into a fine tip and dipped it in 100% rubbing alcohol (I didn’t have contact spray) as my 595 is over 10 years old and owes me nothing. I was losing my mind as I’ve tried so many times to make this thing connect to the dock and it wouldn’t. This did the trick and I was so overjoyed. I hadn’t used this vacuum for 4 years and I had neglected it pretty bad. The battery, filter and brush rolls were replaced today but then it wouldn’t dock! This video and the comments saved me from throwing this thing out in frustration even if I didn’t have to replace the port, so thank you for that and those in the comments who shared your tricks to get it to dock again! So happy!

Thank you sir! My Roomba is alive again because of you. I had no idea about the failsafe feature.
Alternatively, instead of opening it all up, you can pour a spoonful of 99% alcohol down the DC jack to clear out any excess dust/debris. Attempt to swab up any dirt you can. Then see if it works! Worked for me after one rinse and dabbing up the excess with a swab

Same chat I do with myself as I work anyway.

Rosie the Roomba does a great job picking up my hair🌼 (which is very long) as well as my two cats' hair. Much easier to just prep the house (pick up loose things on the floor, move some furniture around) and start Rosie than to vacuum--which forces my teenager to pick up her room! Also helped us take control of the flea problem we were having. Connects to the app and lets you know when she's stuck, low on battery, or done with the job (and she returns to her dock to recharge). Easy to empty bin (just remember to do it every time as it's not very big). Very happy we finally got her!

Thanks heaps for this. My 500 series was in storage for 5 years, when I took it out, I replaced the battery and it worked a treat, but never would charge on the docks. Even bought a new doc before finding your video. Used the first trick to get the roomba working and might replace the $3 piece if I can get it shipped to NZ. Just wanted to say thanks for the video and your honesty as you went through, gave me the confidence to open up my roomba. The last time I did that, it didn't go a well. LOL.

I found an easy SOLUTION: I had the same problem. When I put the charging cable directly into my Roomba, it was charged without problems, but it would not charge on the docking station. Before you exchange the DC jack on the roomba I recommend testing the following: the problem is dust in the charging jack on Roomba. Just blow it out and put some contact spray into the jack. It should be loading on the docking station again - at least it worked fine for my Roomba. Background: the plug is a changeover switch so that the Roomba can be charged via the charging station an via the DC jack at the same time. Over time, the plug and thus the switching mechanism gets dirty. Blow it out and use contact spray. It takes 1 Minute and solves the problem. Good Luck.

    • @EvaChan

    • @mcallard911

Any computer air spray. Easy to find at Staples or WalMart. Don't spray 1 or 2 seconds. Spray a lot, like 20 to 30 seconds.

Thanks a lot my dear, I know this may sound silly but I didn't nitice the plugging part on the body of roomba before and my battery was totally dead in a way that it didn't have the ability to recognize the charging docking station although I kept it on it the whole night... But after half an hour of charging it directly to roomba (when u gave me the hint of the manual charging option) it worked and managed to get it working and going to the home-charging-dock.... Thanks a lot dear as I was worried to death of losing my iRobot Roomba ❤️

It's useful to extend the good functioning of roomba to take the chance to clean it deeply once it disassembled and before to joint it all again. Dust in bumpers and IR sensors and beams not only make it bad working, also make batteries to last much much less.

First of all thank you so much! I have a Roomba i7 and after cleaning the surface and the back part (wheels and other back parts) immediately It started my problem! The problem was that when I pressed the home button it founded the base station but didn't stop to recharge again and it damaged the dock station! I started watching your video and opened edge brush, button tray piece, bumper and the front sensor! I really have yo tell you thank you so much again because more than twenty minutes I didn't know how to close the bumper and where!while I was watching your video! Also I figured out that the charging base doesn't have any problem because when I put the virtual wall in front of the Roomba it didn't stop and passed the wall and that's why I opened it! Now it works and it founded the dock charger and stop and charge normally and it stops in front of virtual wall! The only problem is the bumper and it said error number nine and the bumper is stuck and I think the screws are not tightly closed because I didn't have a Phillips head screwdriver! If your video didn't exist then I never could solve the problem and really I appreciate it! I was going crazy when the vacuum cleaner broke!
Thank you for video again and I think this could be helpful for you and others too! As you said correct tools are always helpful.
I did the same thing which you did on 9:28 and only I watched your video because I didn't know how to close the bumper

At around 18:00 the thing that you are unsure of that you think might be a handle… is the handle. It only comes up a few degrees and makes carrying the Roomba from one room to another easy. Also, you did realize you did not have to disassemble quite as much as you did, other that to gain full access to the places to blow out dust. Just saying that I have done this in 5 minutes… not 49. And, by the way, great job of taking the thing apart and getting it back together. Shows people what can go very right and waht needs some itme spent to do without breaking anything.

Tear down and reassembly worked, I didn't even have to replace the charge port. I did test it with the multimeter tho. Just put the meter on beep mode and then test the three prongs on the connector. You should get continuity on two pins with it plugged in, and continuity on two different pins with an unplugged. In the end, I think the actual fix for mine was just cleaning the battery contacts - there is a tiny bit of battery crest. Nevertheless thanks for the video!

Very helpful for "disassemble stephney" ! One little hint I would offer : when putting the screws back in the "reverse to click" works well but always "start" all the screws before you tighten them makes alignment easier. Not sure this is the problem with mine (not charging) and my model does not use same dc connector on the unit as the charger. (Charger is ac cord jack only on my 770.) OBTW: If you think working on something with kitty's help is a pain try it with a 120 lb German Shepard in your face ! LOL And we have enough fur in our Roomba to build several cats! Great job & thanks!

IT WORK FOR ME. It was this jack that was malfunctioning. I tried without it and more and it was when I put the jack of my friend's Roomba 761 (item to mine) to it that it started to recharged and docking again. I put a little heat on the jack soldering just to reconnect it good than showered it with brake cleaner and electric fluid and now it just works great.

Great video Kelly, despite the rambling. (kidding, very nice). My Roomba 650 doesn't have that part at all, there is no place to charge directly. The docking station contacts must be kept immaculately clean. I may solder small, thin pieces of sheet silver or copper to the contacts to get better contact than steel. Thanks again for the nice video! ... PS, the screws that are held in are called "captive screws".

After watching the video I inspected the Jack plug on my 595 to see if the contact needed to be bent over to side. on inspection I noticed that there was a great deal of dust and dirt in the jack. I was to the point that it was difficult to see the copper contact on the upper side of the plug. I used a small piece of cloth and a pick and cleaned the jack out and that did the trick. I totally enjoyed you disassembly of the Roomba. Thanks

Nice work, this from a guy who has done a lot of this kind of work. Two things: you could really use an electric drill/driver for removing all those screws, and we don't need to see every screw go out and back in. Just be careful during reassembly; start all the screws by hand, then run them down with the electric driver, with the torque set at bare minimum.

All other vids I checked had this convenient shape where they could just prop the cover up from the end and they made me feel like such a loser 😂 I have a Roomba 695 which apparently is made for Kohl's and nobody owns one except me. I eventually resorted to a zip tie to run through the ring edge from both ends and got it off. It was one tight piece of plastic... Fingers are still hurting.

pssst. quick fix: stick a vacuum hose over the entire area, sucking out the dust. That's your problem at the contact point.

Sometimes you can leave the screws in the holes while you take things apart. That way its easy to keep them in the correct location.

Nice. Now I can see why iRobot eliminated the charging port on the side of the robot on newer models.

Good video I’m thinking same thing on my Braava 380. Also seeing dark spots on the power jack board. But can’t find the parts on ebay..

This may be the problem I am currently having with my 561. I didn't know that they had that failsafe shut off or even a port on the side for charging. I kept getting err5 charging and when I looked at the port it was full of dust. Vacuumed it out and put on the charger and its charging. Yeah..

Great video . I have a Red Rumbo. 500 series. No docking station but does have adapter which can plug in side. New battery ran fine until I need to charge and no power. Indicator light no go. Light on adapter shows power. Ran continuity test. Go on one contact but not the other. Opposite of your demo, If I replace with the same sensor do you think that will do the trick? Any safe way to charge the battery without inserting in Rumba? Thanks

Mine was doing the exact same thing and all that was wrong was some dirty charge sensors. Get a magic eraser and clean the two metal charge points on the charger and the two on the robot and it will connect as good as new.

It's a great video so that I had repaired a 571 model. The same trouble found at the model 980(even had fully cleaned the contact face of it and the charge base),do you or anyone can give a good answer.

Fishbowl fell onto the Rumba -which was on the charger. I threw towels on it but it would not charge the next day. I opened it and. I thing seemed even damp. Cleaned it up and still won’t charge - tried plugging in directly, nope. Should I assume it’s the battery? Maybe shorted out?

great review. My Roomba 650 just stopped vacuuming. My son has an identical 650 I bought him years ago so I tried his Aerovac Dust Bin but it still failed. I did a factory reset but no luck. Any ideas?

Hi! Do you know if the Roomba is able to charge from the dock, but not from the side plug? My Roomba is dead, but I am getting more messages when it is on the dock. When I connect it, it keeps blinking in orange quickly. I have tried the reset procedure (stock + dock button), but it does not work: after a few hours "charging", the Roomba gives a charging message error (7). I am using a replacement li-ion battery (not original), it is almost discharged. I think the charger is not able to charge the battery. Thank you in advance for your help!
