This video probably had the largest number of aware motorists in it ever, early indication, decisive action, and allowed you to make a pretty much uninterrupted progress….👍🇮🇲👌
Really like this format where you pause and put on the screen your thoughts at the time.
As an American I'm appreciating how much roundabouts help emergency vehicles. You can move through a junction quickly versus the near complete stops that must be made to check cross traffic at a red light.
I mean that's how they work for regular cars aswell 😅
And then there’s the Magic Roundabout… five roundabouts around a roundabout
Problem with roundabouts, when they are properly designed with a good layout and people use them properly they work great, when they aren't they are a nightmare. Which is sadly happening a lot with new ones or when they change them where it tends to be a least effort job and move on :( resulting in poor layout, poor signage and confused drivers.
@@Rroff2Having driven in America, even poorly designed roundabouts are still better than the endless 4-way stops they have over there
The new Audi must have some very effective lighting as everyone seems to get out of the way much quicker in comparison to your previous vehicle.
Zey see a German vehickle und zey zhink "I better get out of ze way, zese German cars are not to be trifled wiz, zey probably have cannons built in somewhere for dealing wiz ze unruly drivers"
My guess is it looks more like a cop car now so people are scared of it lol
@@SeaTurtl3 i don't think so, because the old car seemed to be an under cover cop (all black, no stickers and emergency lights). This one is full-bright-yellow, with "medical" stickers all over it.
@@nakarukatoshino it's not. The new car is completely black.
You're both wrong. It's a navy/dark blue Audi A4 2.0 Quattro Diesel.
Really enjoy watching your videos, I work as a doctor for the NHS and these videos really make me appreciate the role of the paramedics. The ability to handle complex traffic scenarios, drive safely, assess unwell patients with limited resources and then to bring them into hospital must be really challenging. Keep up the good work guys!
Videos are getting better and better, thank you
Thanks very much, appreciated.
@@ChrisMartinEMS Hi Chris, I work with a vehicle manufacturing company and I would love to engage you in a research study about accident managent. We would like to build on your experience as a paramedic to design/build technology to help drivers in the unfortunate event of an accident. Is there an email I can reach you on to share more details? We offer compensation for your time
Thought I was going to see you driving through Swindon in this video!
Love your videos Chris, Keep up the good job, wonderful driving skills, drive safe out there.
I love all of the positive footnotes you are adding that show how you are advantaged in your course of action. There is a level headedness that has to prevail in these circumstances and this is how you get through the traffic with relative ease. It’s a skill set the you use before you even get to the real emergency. Outstanding work Chris ! Keep it up mate. (Not seen the magic roundabout for a good few years) Hemel ❤️
Can someone “who knows” explain the beeping on the radio at the end going high-low-high-low repeatedly?
Incoming 1:1 call.
@@epictetus8028cat 1?
incoming text message. A Point-to-point/1:1 call is longer tones of the same pitch like a ring tone. That's a text alert - probably a stand down. (Source - current ambulance service, used to work in the same trust as Chris)
@@patrickevans574 oh thank you im an aspiring paramedic
The first tone Is an update message on the radio more likely a cancellation and then the 2nd tone prior to.him saying his callsign would be the control room calling him
Excellent driving, although I would never want to meet Chris you in a professional capacity as it means something is very wrong if I do!
Amazed you got through that gap Chris, definitely looked too small to me on the camera with the slightly distorted field of view.
@4.35 Once I was at similar set of traffic lights but was in right turn lane and saw ambulance coming from behind. so reversed back so they could go through those lights instead of waiting at lights.
Glad you showed this, i was disappointed a couple of weeks ago when you cut early in approach to The Plough Roundabout. Just can't figure out why you took the exit you did and not the next one that would have taken you same direction to the next roundabout and avoided the delay at the lights.
Used to commute to Hemel form West London and loved the magic roundabout. Was usually quicker going counter on the bigger ring to get through rush hour traffic! Quirky for sure!
Amazing drive Chris as always. Lovely clear footage from the new dashcam. That Audi is quick!
Great video Chris and some really good awareness by other road users there. Looks like the new car is performing well
just realized your callsign is the same as Bodie in TheProfessionals, nice drive
When driving in the States sometimes I've noticed that u can outrun ur siren on the freeway doing above 80mph. Especially during the cold months.
That is just complete foetid dingo's kidneys, unless you're driving at over 760mph anyway.
@@Paws4thot Not really had it happen to me before, saw a police car coming the opposite way on the motorway just after I got off a junction, about 5 minutes later they were flying past me with their sirens on and I didn't hear them until they had passed me. I knew they were coming my way as I had a few other emergency vehicles pass me on the motorway due to an accident further down.
I think the issue is not "outrunning" the sound literally because ofc you're not driving faster than the speed of sound BUT the issue is you can hit such high speeds that by the time other drivers hear the siren you're already right up on them. There's less time for them to react
4:13. What purpose does that bollard serve? No junction that I could see, and position below crest of that rise from your direction.
what were the chimes at the end of the video?
On camera the gap at the lights didn't look wide enough
Thought you had Orville the Duck in your rear seat
Those that don't know would like to know!
Stand down notice :) Bit of sarcasm humour since he drove so far only to be stood down
2 questions
1. As it’s a lease car do you get to keep it at your house
2. When you go through speed cameras do you get speeding tickets to your door and how do you get around them
1. Depending on the contract with the ambulance service and the car provider, as well as ambulance service needs, sometimes high ranking staff and specialists can get a blue light fitted car as a take home vehicle to use for day to day running when on shift but not on an active call. Think emergency Dr responding from home to a call.
2. Speed cameras don’t know the difference between emergency runs and illegal speeding, so when it gets flashed, the camera operator company will usually have a preset filter that automatically filters any emergency vehicle registration for manual review. This is done to make sure the vehicle in question is running on blue lights and has a valid reason to be on blue lights and excessive speed at the time, and the ambulance/ police / fire Services investigate them to make sure, if all is good the tickets are dismissed, if not and the speed and use of lights was found to be unwarranted/ illegal then the fine and associated points are applied to the driver of the blue light vehicle as when they aren’t using the lights and speed powers granted for the granted reasons then they are still beholden to the same laws as everyone else.
Hope this helps
Another great video
"MAGIC" roundabout look's like a nightmare
Lucky Chris you have a golden ticket.
Actually it's fine. It just works
Thankfully the magic roundabout in Swindon is easier :P
Hey chris, I have question for you or for anyone who worked or works for emergency services, when you going through a red light at roundabout do you need to hand your sirens on can you go through on just your lights?
Another super drive!
"Those that know, know"... wonder what that means
Stood down i think.
It was a panic alarm I believe, someone pressed the "oh sh*t send help" button basically.
@@Perseus7567nope, just an incoming 1:1 call. Probably means he was being stood down.
incoming text message on his radio - probably a stand-down message
Yeah it was a stand down. The "If you know" comment is a bit of British sarcasm probably commenting on the fact you can drive miles at speed on blues only to be stood down from the job anyway. Just the nature of control prioritising high numbers of units that can be stood down as more info is available, instead of not sending enough! I know some volunteer first responders who will be paged an alert to respond, only to be stood down as soon as they get in the car.
I love you Chris
At 2:03… what happens with speeding tickets? Do you still get them sent out to you to justify or is the license plate automatically recognised?
Ticket sent out to the registered keeper of the vehicle (likely the trust, then internally sent to the station the vehicle is from), line manager will look at the time and date and marry it up with the emergency call then submit an exemption claim form and the ticket will be rescinded. Also a reason why all emergency vehicles have a blue light to the rear that doesn't flash so that you can prove at the split second the picture is taken by the fixed camera that the blues were on.
@@drumslad42 never noticed the static blue light but thats interesting to know
Just how many roundabouts do you have to take before you get to the magic roundabout?
All of them :)
I think that videos showing you when you are out on a “blue run” should be compulsory in driving schools.
Stand down stand down 😂
Seems dumb using the horn for the sirens - A floor mounted switch for your left foot ?
Some trust do this
swindon had the first one. only thing we got. footy team are crap lol. moved with my folks when i was four to salisbury way lol
37........CANCEL
Hope the person that pressed panic is alright, good driving as always Chris!
If you're talking about the beep boop at the end, it was most probably a stand down message
Yeah, that noise was a 1:1 call coming over the radio, not a panic button.
the those that know know was definitely a panic, the bot after was a 1:1 i agree but the bit before sounded exactly like the panic button noise. Atleast that’s the noise they use round here anyway, could be different for different trusts and areas
@BazzaB23 It was the noise NHS Trust MDTs make when you're stood down or get further patient information. He's not police so radios and dispatch systems are different.
@@wilfbm9067 ah i see, must be different to my local ambulance service. Strange how they can be so similar yet so different 😂.
Why do you drive an unmarked vehicle?
On-call Officer
He is on-call and its silly for him to keep a marked ambulance car outside his house since it will make the car and house a target for theives

Nice drive, nothing worse than that sound. 🙄
The cameras look good, however it would be really nice if you could add a microphone in the cabin was nice hearing the engine noise and you complaining about drivers
This new one is much lower quality
What video are you watching? You can hear Chris talking throughout. The Audi is just a quieter vehicle
@@thepeacockk not nearly as well as with the old camera setup. The quality is a lot lower.
@@thepeacockkI had trouble hearing him.
And with headphones it is uncomfortable to turn up the volume to hear him better.
I'll never understand why they make islands between lanes.
It hinders emergency vehicles and have no other purpose.
They're for pedestrians crossing
And to prevent cars getting into a head-on collision.
Pedestrian Refuge Islands, so you only have to cross one lane of traffic at once. Peds do not have priority but you can ease off the gas to let them cross.
@@6Twisted Barely any of them had crosswalks and you can get the same effect with solid lines. The island wont save you.
you can get the same result IF everyone follows the rules. seems alto of rules for thee but not for me going on these days

5:09 no matter what was happening on that road, that van was pulling out regardless. He decided that long before he could see anything.
yep... no effort whatsoever to slow down and look to their right - could have been nasty if anything had been there earlier!
Hi Chris. I hope you are well. A while ago I posted a message asking for your speed to be displayed on the screen if that was possible(?). I see that has been displayed now. Thank you very much. I hope that wasn't too much trouble. Take care.
It’s part of his new dashcam setup
Loved the extra commentary (and accompanying captions) in this video. Can we have more commentary over the top please? Another great drive and video Chris. Cheers!
I disagree, if there is to be commentary it should be added over the top in edit as I found it hard to hear

That.. a magic roundabout?! Pfft haven't seen swindons version then 😂😂
there's also a Dutch version in Cambridge for cyclists. Besides a magic roundabout existing in Hemel there's the Dutch one in academic Cambridge.😅
I live near Swindon and hate it with a passion. The Magic Roundabout as well as the bit between the M4 and Gloucestershire called Swindon
@davewhite768, Aylesbury/ Stoke Mandeville has a much smaller magic roundabout. Nonetheless still as baffling as the one in Hemel.
Do I have right of way, do you have right way...
left right left right left right, attention! Emergency responder coming through.🤣🤣
@shuyelbari8853 just close your eyes, nothing to see 🤣🤣
I can see why you chose not to use the exemption at 5:00 - it would have left you on the wrong side of the central divider with nowhere to go if someone came flying around the corner. Good decision I think.
The lights on your new car appear to be getting you noticed quicker than the Skoda.
Wait. I was waiting to see Dougal. Or at least Zebedee!
Those that know, know 😂
Those that know had the music playing in their heads throughout!
A less serious UA-camr might have played The Magic Roundabout theme tune in this video. 🙂
Credit to the fiesta driver at 2:23 for fixing the problem too
Agreed, they def added to making that move easier as had they slowed, it would have made that more tricky for sure.
In this video youve had some situations with cars waiting at a red light. If you approach with lights and siren, arent they allowed to enter the intersection to clear the road? Im from germany and here youre allowed to carefully move into the intersection if a emergency vehicle is approaching.
No not in the UK, if you go though a red light even for an emergency vehicle you can get a fine or points on your licence.
@@stephenmudiecastles.2938 thats so dumb😂😂 typical uk i guess
@@stephenmudiecastles.2938unless a police officer tells you to go through the red.
@@epictetus8028 Nope they can not order you to break the law and that is what you would be doing. If you go though a red light you will get a fine, no matter the excuse.
@stephenmudiecastles.2938 An officer on foot can direct you through a red light, however they should not push you through with lights and sirens.
Can’t really top the video set up now it’s perfect. Loved it
Could you explain what the horns mean amongst the siren? And why the siren is sometimes turned off? Thanks for the vids.
They use the horn to switch between the tones, or switch them off completely. And the siren is turned off so as to not force motorists through red lights, i.e. no action required from them as they don't have an exemption.
Also, the siren may not be activated in situations where it wouldn't be beneficial. Like at the very start where he's on an open road with very little traffic - he may judge that the blue lights alone are sufficient in that scenario.
Love the quality with the new dashcams and how it shows your speed
I love watching these videos when I’m on my break 🙌🏾
So what do the sounds at the end mean? 😋
So we've learnt the easiest way to get through the magic roundabout is with sirens 😅
Was that a stand down after all that? 😂
I would love to spend a shift with you! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
This roundabout is mental. I saw a video of it once and thought I would hate to have to deal with that, a week later completely unaware I realised I was at the magic roundabout, and had no choice but to navigate it haha. Who designed that and thought it was a good idea?
IDK, it seems fine to me. Just seems to work
@@brianfunt2619Maybe it works because it’s so weird people slow right down to navigate it?
@@lindaj5492From the couple of times I've driven through it, I wouldn't say people slow down excessively
Another great vid Chris. I have a question, do police cars have to switch sirens off at traffic lights as well so as to not bully traffic into braking the law and going through a red?
They aren't required to switch their lights off and what we see in the videos while maybe not clear is him switching sirens off and keeping back as to not persuade drivers to cross that line or do anything reckless or dangerous. All emergency response advanced drivers (blue light drivers) drivers should be trained in this etiquette :)
Bradley barker is correct, except for the fact that by UK law the only emergency service allowed to direct traffic through a red light is if a uniformed police officer does so. Which is why you see Chris switch off his siren, (not his lights) and hang back as to not illegally force the other vehicles through the lights. Having said this it’s a regular occurrence across the uk for all emergency services to force vehicles through red lights so they can get through despite the law saying otherwise.
Good job and nice video, however, the picture is too dark.
Thanks and yes, i noticed that too and had the EV set to -0.6 so i have increased this to +0.3 to see how that goes.
Do you have an operational reason for swapping between the yelp and wail on the siren?
Different sound frequencies travel different distances and are more audible to other drivers. So you’ll notice that sirens at junctions vs along a main road change
There was a video recently on this channel that explained all.
a few typo's there, but another great video!
Ironic. :)
Hard to type whilst driving on blues.... hehe!
I bet an Uber could get from the M1 to Hemel Train Station as fast, if not faster...... Added bonus of the old Kodak Head Office looming over the roundabout..
just wanted to ask - is the vest just for quick access so you’re identifiable if you’re on-call? doesn’t look like it’s thick enough to be a stab vest 🤷♂️
Why an unmarked vehicle ?
Undercover medical services?
why are you driving in a normale car instad an ambulance quikly responscar
On-call Officer
Why does this channel exist? It encourages speeding and dangerous driving. This guy has made a channel to openly flaunt his ‘legalised’ dangerous driving.
Strange take - but alright 😂
To allow people to learn about response and defensive driving or be simply entertained by Chris. Im not sure it encourages anything as someone would have to be a complete moron to think this is an instructional video on 'how to do dangerous driving' at which point they probably dont need any help with dangerous driving.
Nobody is holding you down and forcing you to watch it. Jog on.
Bet you'd hate to hear what I do for a living then - I train people to do this. And... hey - we're not even going to a real emergency when we're "speeding and dangerous driving"! 😄
