  • A quick view of an Engine Room of an LNG Vessel with Electric Propulsion.
    Before you complain about the shaky video: The use of regular cameras and phones is prohibited inside the engine room of an LNG carrier. This video was filmed using an explosion proof ATEX certified camera. This camera has poor performance and no stabilization. Being used to my iPhone camera and stabilization, combined with the fact that I was in a rush, caused this shaky video.

    There's a difference between quick and concise and this. You had the desire to make the video but no care went into it. You move way too quickly, if I wanted to see a bunch of white pipe I'd goto a plumbing supply house and wander around the warehouse. That's about all anyone got from this. And your commentary about someone else can edit the video, editing wouldn't have made this any better. Shoot a good video and straight upload it.

    Now that the dramamine has kicked in after watching this video, nice effort. As a video pro, it'd be better to be more fluid with the camera like a SteadyCam setup. It can be done, even with a cell phone. A little practice using your arm and body movements together, you'd be surprised! I'd also title (if possible) most of the equipment in the engine room you tried to show, the more detail the better (for me anyway) All the support equipment just to get the prop to rotate is mind boggling. But thanks for the video, most of us will never see this in person so it's always a treat for the mechanically curious people like us that view this.

    What I first noticed is the cleanliness of the ship -- from living quarters to the engine room. Even the machine shop was tidy. The racks in the parts store are constructed for rough seas.
    I know nothing about electric ship propulsion. I assume that the ship's cargo of LNG fuels duel-fuel (LNG gas / fuel oil) engines (13:26), which drive electric generators, which in turn drive the electric motors that actually propel the ship.

    Interesting! I was impressed by how clean everything is, with no leaks and oil spots here and there. I had no idea that everywhere below was so loud! I was also impressed by what appears easy access to the equipment instead of stuck in cubby holes with restricted access for maintance. There is so much stuff in the engine room and below decks. Is it always this loud?
    Is the crew supposed to know all about each piece of equipment? Is this a new ship?

I have experience on mega container vessels and had a deal with shaft generators and its frequency converters but those ones I see in the video are very attractive. Now I have to dream to work on such a type of vessel. May be do you have instruction manuals for all machinery equipment of the vessel?

      @@sasiskas Ok, I understand. But, I hope, can you tell me please what kind of switching element is used in rectifier (for such drives it sopposed to be used active rectifier) and inverter unit phase module? All interface, control and protective PCBs are interconnected via optical links? And what is the power for each drive.
      For example I met such a phase module in INU, whose main components are:
      4 IGCTs (Integrated Gate Commutated Thyristor)
      4 integrated freewheeling diodes parallel to IGCTs because of low power
      2 Neutral point diodes divide DC voltage equally across IGCTs
      2 clamping diodes
      2 clamping capacitors (clamping resistors and balancing resistors are mounted
      separately, outside of the phase module).
      I am just wondering about what kind of topology in that propulsion sysstem is used.

    I do not understand, why electric propulsion? I bet the motors are greater than 90 percent efficient, not sure about the generators. But in the end, no matter how efficient they are, it requires less fuel to run conventional system. Maybe initial cost savings by not having auxiliary engines? But I suspect there is some underlying reason that has to do with the ship being lng type. Pleas explain, if you know reason.
    Thanks for the tour, most interesting.

    • @sasiskas
      @sasiskas  7 років тому +4

      You are right, it requires less fuel to run a conventional system...BUT you can not use natural gas as a fuel on conventional systems. The whole point in LNG vessels is to be able to use the boil off (natural gas) of the cargo as fuel for the propulsion of the ship.
      In the past the only way to use natural gas as a fuel, was to combine boilers and steam turbines, a system like that was totally inefficient. So this is why the electric propulsion was introduced, it offers the ability to use natural gas as a fuel and has better efficiency that the steam turbines.
      Recently MAN has developed two-stoke main engines that can use natural gas fuel. These engines should have the efficiency of the conventional systems and can also use natural gas a fuel. But this type of propulsion is relatively new, so there are not enough info regarding their reliability efficiency.

    Is there 4 diesel engines and 4 electric engines for a single propeller ?

    • @sasiskas
      @sasiskas  8 років тому +3

      it is a new vessel and we take good care of it. there are 4 dual fuel generator engines (Gas or Diesel/HFO) and 2 electric motors connected through a reduction gear to a single propeller. But it can move with only one generator engine running. The faster you want to go the more generator engines need to run.

    • @daeronbarth1098
      @daeronbarth1098 8 років тому

      Nice. And to use gas as fuel is there another engine or the same engine that use fuel can use gas ?

    • @sasiskas
      @sasiskas  8 років тому +3

      +Daeron Barth it is the same engine, that's why it is called dual fuel, it can run on gas and if you like it can change over to fuel, or the opposite. For more info you can look for Watsila DF engines.
