    I bought this receiver back in 1996.
    Had it in the Philippine together with the Kenwood TS-870 and I was somehow disappointed. With a good array of monoband yagis, included a full size for the 40 mtrs band, it was certainly good, but not any better than the TS-870.
    Signal that you would not be able to listen with the TS-870 neither could be received by the WJ. Mostly used in CW.
    Not a bad rig, but it could hardly justify its cost. On the plus side the excellent customer service from WJ. I had a problem with one key and they send me the whole set for free.

      This receiver is specialy made for professionel use. Amateurraradio asks another way of using. BUT this receiver is extremely strong build for working 24 hours,like marine, coastguard etc. Greetings from the Netherlands.

      @@jandejong6498 I have been using, for work, all sort of professional receivers for more than 30 years. Few of them had something more or better compared to the amateur radio radios. For example the VLF capabilities of a RFT EK-300.
      Usually they are a bit less sensitive, due to the fact that in professional listening centres you have large antenna arrays.
      The real difference is the price, because governments and military are ready to pay much more.
      MTBF does not increase significantly. I have never ever got a amateur radio transceiver or receiver failing over so many years.

    How the hell do you buy one of these things? I’ve been searching so much But all I can find is people talking about them but there is apparently no for sale on the Internet.

    Cool Radio :) whether they are available in stores somewhere?

    • @douro20
      @douro20 8 років тому +1

      As far as I know it was only available directly from Watkins-Johnson themselves, and as these receivers were designed for SIGINT use they have export restrictions.

      Obsoleted in terms of sensitivity/selectivity with new SDR systems like FDM-S2 for 1/4th the price.

    There's NOT any QRM. It means that the RF GAIN control is setted VERY LOW. Is simply IMPOSSIBLE to listen the 40 meters band as a "squelched" vhf channel. With the sensitivity lowered in this way, a 100 dollars, 60''s years receiver is good athe same manner.

    • @adkforever6997
      @adkforever6997 3 роки тому +1

      You haven't got the slightest clue about the proper use of the manual gain control on the HF-1000A. Fernando has the setting backed off from full gain. This prepares the AGC to accept a variable threshold, making for smooth audio recovery.

      @@adkforever6997this applies to any receiver, more so for low end ones. Volume fixed at 2/3 and use the RF os volume...
      You hunt for the best S/N not for the highest S meter reading.
