  • Two really nice radios in head to head comparison. Both are controllable over PC.
Malahit-DSP is a Tuner based Wideband Receiver from
    -50 kHz to 49,999 MHz
    -50,001 MHz to 249,999 MHz
    -400 MHz to 2 GHz.
The Afedri LAN-IQ is an Direct Sampling and a Tuner based Receiver from
    -30KHz to 35MHz (Direct Sampling)
    -35MHz to 1700.00MHz (Tuner based)

This comparison is without the Noise Reduction (NR) being on for either radio - they both sound better with it on! The Malahit in this video does have the Noise Blanker (NB) on, though. The LAN-IQ does not have any NB. The Malahit's NR is adjustable, the LAN-IQ's is not, it's either on or off. But nevertheless I am able to pull out weak signals better with the LAN-IQ than with the Malahit. The LAN-IQ is also able to display up to a 768 kHz band width which is a lot more than the Malahit's 160 kHz maximum display. You can order the LAN-IQ with an optical encoder for tuning for $25 USD more, which is superior to the Malahit.
The Malahit has more options for adjusting the display than the LAN-IQ. The Malahit has more sound options so you can adjust it for good quality audio. But now I use a small battery-powered 3-band equalizer, a Koss EQ50, with which I can tailor the LAN-IQ sound to be as good or better than the Malahit. The Malahit lets you easily store and retrieve frequencies from memory - the LAN-IQ has a cumbersome process to do the same requiring a number of presses and turning the tuning knob, and restrictions on what frequencies can be stored in the first 13 memory locations.
The Malahit has an internal battery (although some models may not). You will need an external power supply for the LAN-IQ - either USB power or 7.5-10V can be used. You need an external speaker or headphones for the LAN-IQ, using a 3.5mm jack - the Malahit has an internal speaker or headphone output via 3.5mm jack. I use an external speaker with both.
If you buy a Chinese Malahit clone, you may get sub-standard components - mine has a bad 22 MHz oscillator that makes it incapable of receiving above about 200 MHz, and degrades the signal quality on HF. Get your Malahit from the Russian developers to be sure of its quality.
Both of these SDRs are capable of picking up signals and playing them intelligibly that most other non-SDR radios cannot. I like them both, but lately I use the LAN-IQ more than the Malahit - the optical encoder tunes smoothly, and I can see 768K bandwidth rather than just 160K, as well as receive and understand weaker signals better.
You would think for the much higher price for the Afedri LAN-IQ that you'd get more options to adjust various parameters - but you'd be wrong. Nevertheless the choices made by Alex the developer of the LAN-IQ work well to deliver a great little receiver. Hopefully development of the firmware will continue but that is to be seen.

Doesn't the Malahit demo firmware offer 50KHz-200MHz. The pay for upgrade firmware offers 50KHz-2000MHz with a gap between 250-400MHz. What was your opinion of them?

you cannot compare these two receiver, malahite has not rf ADC,but has an audio ADC.Afedri is a true sdr with rf sampling 12 bit, fpga etc. That's why the price is twice (too much,in my opinion)

test using a home-built 49:1 unun between the whip and the input of the receiver. Should then be much better. There is a video on it. Also, someone measured the current as about 300 ma.(?)... less on standby, but not by much.

I'm listening to sound in my headphones connected by wire to my laptop, connected to my router over wifi and then connected to the internet via cable and fibre to a server that another user connected to via a similar pathway to me, when they uploaded over that connection a video which shows them operating radios which are tuned to and listening to transmitting stations....which are transmitting data received by them over the internet.
I suppose, I could always just switch it off if ever it becomes a problem .... :)
