Thank you for taking the time to show the work in detail. You are very good at soldering. Looks like these mods are getting better and slightly easier each time. One day i might be able to try one myself.
Awesome as always! Keep improving these radios!
Was looking for this video! Thank you. Nicely explained and executed
love these little mods. thank you
Greetings Paul from Venezuela, that modification is much better and easy to realize than the first one. Thanks for you dedication to explained us. 73`s my friend de YV2ESB.
Excellent! Thank you so much for your efforts to demonstrate this.
Hello. Use 50 ohm RF1.13 shielded cable (outer diameter 1.13 mm) or 50 ohm RG178 Teflon (PTFE) cable outer diameter 1.80 mm which will allow you to weld the ground braid without melting the central core. Thanks for the video.
Wow! Great as always! Ordered all stuff will repeat the mod ASAP!
Great video. Looking forward to seeing how it performs. My expectations are low.
Great video Paul thanks!
Wow my idol. Another great job and amazing video Paul.
Thank you very much my friend! :)
Thanks Paul for your work in this great little Radio.
I did the Mod too, and i‘m very happy :-)
For all the guys that have the same problem with the TX/RX-LED:
It is absolutely certain that the flashlight was removed by cutting the board, and a trace was interrupted, which is contacted through the pcb.
But it's not a problem, I followed the trace and re-laid a wire to restore the function of the LEDs.
The Cu-Wire is soldered from the top of the LEDs to the bottom right pin of the volume knob.
(View of the front of the lying PCB)
That's all!

Thank you for your comment and this tip. Also can be used a different BNC socket with slimmer profile and then is no need to cut the board. I did it in my second radio with great results.
@@OM0ET can you share a link for this Connector, i orderd different types before, but there was all not usable .

OM0ET , You did a Great Job on this modification... It's quite the amazing radio for sure...
I have a few one that is Modified with Firmware and one that is stock , as of yet..... Thank You
Thanks a lot Paul. Amazing Mod!, for mine, I will put SMA as its small profile, Will also move LED somewhere else using cables. and surely will use wifi shield cable from old laptop. With Short wave ground matters!.
Wow! Super video thanks!
Wonderful job.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks for share with us.

Thank you Paul. Great work, great video.
The LED can be relocated to the base, or side.
Actually yes :)
Good job !
Muy buen trabajo, 73.

Good Job Paul 73's PD1MLB
Great job, well done!!! 73.
amazing
I love it.
👍 Good Explanation, Thx u, 73
Good evening Paul. Interesting video, but I don't understand everything. Secondary antenna without mass because only the central core is connected? Is the broadcast in uhf/vhf still possible or has this station become only a receiver? Thanks
I would suggest using a VHF/UHF antenna in the new connector when transmitting FM.
This is a fantastic video! Thank you so much for taking all the time to make the video, and then for all the editing and then for sharing it with all of us!
Is there a mod that helps this radio receive and sound better on aircraft bands? Out of the box it seems kind of scratchy and hard to understand. I don't know if the front end gets overloaded or what exactly is going on. But I'm 100% ready to try a hardware (or software) mod.
Again, thank you so much for the video! That was just a fantastic example of how to implement the mod!
Sure, for example if you install the IJV 3.18 version custom firmware you will get an AIR band with great quality. Search for the link in some of my older videos descriptions. But this modification board activates the CEC firmware only.
Thanks for the good video! I installed this board for reception on one antenna. Almost very bad! I want to install an output to a second antenna. In your video you didn’t show why at 144 and 433 MHz? Or is the station only an HF receiver after modification?
Sure, HF is only for RX. You can TX only on VHF/UHF after this mod.
Спасибо! Вы вдохновляете своим видео на эксперименты, с удовольствием вас смотрю.
Thank you!
The video clip of the time you soldered the antenna disappeared and was discontinuous. I would like to know which terminals you soldered the antenna to on the original board. Could you please explain a bit? Thank you.
Great bit of Home Brewing , well done, it's great to see soldering Irons out again like the old days 73s M0DHA
I got one of those mod chips but it needs assembly. Where can I find a guide? Also it appears to have two places for an ic but only one chip? Do I have to take one from the radio?
Hello and thanks for the video. My question is if this modification is only for yhe uvk5 99 or can it be done in uvk5 or in the whole uvk5 familiar?
Thanks again and 73
Klaus
CE2KVL
They are basically all the same radios. So it will work with all of them.
Thanks Paul for the great video, If go with two antenna option, will I be able to receive VHF UHF with single original antenna? or would I need two antenna connected always? In other words, Would this full mod separate the RX and TX Antenna? thanks
An answer to your question is in the video already ;)
Many compliments! good work! But with this mods it's possible transmit to HF frequency?
It is not possible.
Nice job
Excellent work

This is a very good video showing the modification. Did you have other information beforehand on how the modification should be installed, or did you have to make it up yourself? 😊
Thank you. I have asked the seller for some more instructions
Does the radio from aliexpress come with the 2nd antenna spot installed ? I because when you use your link it shows the radio and says its modified but it does not show the BNC connector.
You can also use the tiny coax used to wire laptop wifi cards to the small tab antennas, Amazon has these antennas cheap.
I just hope they can make it transmit
I hope it will possible most probably with new chip and upgraded firmware!
Excellent tutorial video!!!! Thank you! Can this modification work with other firmwares?
No, it works with CEC firmware only
Great job, very well explained as always, just one thing, once the mod is fitted and the radio is reset, what program is used to add channels and also if it is chirp, it needs a .py (python file) where can i get this file from?
No, for CEC the genuine program only can be used for programming, not Chirp
Superbly presented video Sir. GJ6WRI✅
Hi, thanks for the video, is amazing !what is the wire you use to connect the jumpers
one string of the tiny cable wire
I’m just curious. Does this device use the ATmega microcontroller?
No, it's a clone of STM32G030.
Hi Paul, I installed this following your guide but skipped removing the cap for the second antenna mod, turn the radio and can access the chip with fn+0 (FM), but there's barely any sound and no reception. I can hear _something_ if I turn the volume up to 100%, it sounds faintly like a detuned radio with no antenna (pure white noise).
When I installed, I checked every connection with a multimeter continuity tester, I'm almost completely confident everything is installed correctly. Any advice on what might have gone wrong?
Jaký je rozdíl v příjmu přes stávající SMA konektor oproti přidanému BNC? Zrovna moc se mi nechce vrtat druhý konektor, proto se ptám.
Z externej antény je lepší príjem a lepšia citlivosť prijímača.
Is this a direct replacement for the v1 board or do I have to reverse the capacitor and choke I replaced with the v1?
You can use this new board as an upgrade from V1. Just replace the board and leave all around as it is.
Dangerous unsoldering method, better use hot air or 2 soldering irons or melt from both side of the ic. And this is excellent guide video! Thanks a lot)
Thanks Paul! What is the main advantage compared to the first HF mod ?
louder sound, better reception
Thank you Paul. I think I had enough with the first version. I really don't want to ruin another HT as long as I have dedicated HF receiver. The reason is that the firmware concentrates on the HF function thus the VHF and UHF side has to suffer (lower tx power, fewer functions and settings, you are stuck on this firmware etc.). Many thanks for your fine instructional videos! 73 de YO6VSS.
Great video. Not clear on why I need the second antenna? couldnt I just change the existing antenna to one better for receiving HF when I wanted to listen to hf? ANd with the CEC firmware dont you loose the vhf/UHF repeater capability?
The existing capacitor value won't allow what you're suggesting.
So the second socket is to bypass the filters on the factory antenna ??
@@MidlifeRenaissanceMan The capacitor he removes @8:24 is the one I'm referring to. Later he solders across its old location @25:54
@@garycook5125 One would think that makes the original antenna obsolete?
@@emavideo Correct, it is no longer connected. If you watch for a little bit after @25:54, he cuts the trace that originally led to the old antenna.
so the way you did the antenna mod, you lost vhf/uhf reception? or can you still receive it on the new one? also despite of loosing that RX can you still transmit on the factory antenna?
VHF/UHF is intact even after mod
@@OM0ET and is it ok to transmit with both antennas?
nach dem Umbau, welche Bänder sind damit dann zu empfangen?Auch unter 14 MHz?,Geht Flugfunk und UKW noch?
For the new board 150 kHz up to 30 MHz. They are independent to the previous reception modes and they are still usable.
well, why not watch the full video?? ;)
Paul, I think you soldered the plus side of the speaker to the neg pad? you can use RG-316 coax
Yes
it doesn't matter what polarity is connected on a mono speaker
Hi Paul! Thank you for this video! I've noticed on both of my Quansheng UV-K5(8) radios that the IJV mod (3.14) causes harmonic interference on 70cm and 2m bands. The radios have original hardware. How does the mod you presented affect transmission on those bands? I would like to make the modification with an additional PCB, but I am wondering if it has any impact on TX on those bands.
I believe that the harmonics are a problem regardless of which firmware you are using.
@@kelvinjhill Thx for answer. Do you think this is normal behavior of this transciever?
hello Paul ! Can you give me the approximate diameter of the hole behind the screen through which you pass the cable connected to the antenna? Thank you Paul !
I gues maybe 1mm only
@@OM0ET thx :-)
cool video mate. could you upload HD Pictures somewhere? would be cool to watch as help for solder
Hi Paul, could you please tell me what is the difference between the IOTC SI4732 V2.0 module and the IOTC SI4732 V2.1? I've been looking for it for two days but I can't find it anywhere. Many thanks in advance. Vy 73, ha5cvz, op Miklos.
I have not this information, I am sorry.
Excellent video. Can this modification be done on a UV-K5 (8)?
Yes it can!
What type of wire did you use for the jumper ? Thanks
HI,
I followed your video and did the modification on a Quansheng UV-K5 (8). I had problems connecting the pad of the SI4732 V.2 board with resistor (the bridge with the shortest wire).
I destroyed the board pad and I attached the wire with some solder to the board without the pad.
The radio seems to work but I can't switch from dual frequency to single frequency and therefore I don't see the various options.
By pressing the 0 button the word "wait" appears on the video but the radio stops and you have to turn it off and on again.
Do you have some advice?
Thank you

Thank you Paul for the content, really good as always, 73 de Richard G0VCW
I don't get the 'antenna wire' - part. You are using thin coax, but the coax shield is not connected on any side? (radio ground or BNC connector
Unfortunately, I didn't have such tiny coax so I had to use just a wire. Body of BNC connector is touching of the shasi.
TRX with SSB and CW without encoder is like a Rubik's cube 🙂
I bought the modified version you suggested which comes with cec-05hf and pressing 0 key just displays wait for ever. Few times it worked but most of the time screen displays wait. Any idea?. Thank for your amazing videos. 73
Yes, resolder again 8 contacts on the Flex board on the place of the ex-FM chip.
you can't just use the normal antenna connection for the same functionality
or do you really need to connect a 2nd antenna?
Bypassing built-in VHF/UHF filters gives you a better sensitivity
i did not understand a thing what are you doing to the devices, but i watched it till the end because it looks very interesting
wow thx 73*
When you put it to the first test on 20 meters the guys were speaking in Greek. 14.309 KHz.
This is an interesting mod and as others have said it would be nice if it was available with the mod from the factory. Was through my scrap box and did find some very fine coax line that is less than half the diameter of the RG174. Not sure of the impedance and it might even be for audio circuits. Would not really matter if just for receive. Now we will wait another decade to see if someone will come up with a cheap all band RX and TX small transceiver.
73!
May I ask what kind of antenna you use, a high frequency antenna?
it is CB antenna
Hello Paul! thank you for this video! Does this also work on the entire UVK5 range?
Hello Paul ! merci pour cette video ! Est ce que cela fonctionne aussi sur toute la gamme UVK5 ?
LW/MW/HF/6M/FM/VHF/UHF
@@OM0ET merci Paul 👍
Awesome as usual thank you..
Just wish there was a way to combine ijv and cec firmware
Wouldn't mind having a full band radio with 999 memory slots.. lol with a way to increase output wattage.. tidradio td-h8 allows up to 10 watt output..
Stumbled on to a Motorola clone that is supposed to be capable of tx up to 25 watts..
Apex 8000 . I need to do some more research on it .. to see what I can get away with..
Hello, I would like to ask you to share the firmware for the version without the additional antenna. It would make it easier for me to use. Is that possible ? I really ask you with the k5prog-win program and possibly some driver for the radio station. I am not able to find it properly. Thank you very much.
The MFG could sell a zillion of these radios if they did this mod and added $20 to the price.
Theu do make them finished that way 84.99 canadian mean while I can get the radio for 25 and mod for 15
@@jaycheeks7393 I paid $29 for my original radio.
@@jaycheeks7393 AliExpress might be who your referring too. I have seen them for $76 delivered to the U.S. I have only seen the single antenna on AliExpress and
the description talks about an antenna mod of some sort sounding like it improves the single antenna performance?
@@jaycheeks7393where can you get one already modded?
@@jaycheeks7393
Hi There, where can I purchase one with the mod already as you say?
Cheers
I would have liked to see the modification, HF performance without the second antenna port, with the telescopic antenna on the original, SMA port. Then perhaps the second antenna port added. I could easily do this modification. Would I do this modification? No, probably not. They obviously know this radio can be modified, why don’t they do it in the factory? Then sell it to the public? After seeing your first modification I thought they would release a factory version. How much is the modification board/kit?
AliExpress already has a modified UVK-6 radio station.
Serious Question, Wich Chip Is The Best? Can You Answer That? I Have 3 Of UVK5/6 Radios And I Don`t Know WICH Chip Is The Best And Thats Why Im Thinking To Mod One With One Chip And Another With Another Chip And Then test Them Out And Make A review Video On Wich Chip is The Best And For WHat Reason.
I would go to V2
Did you use tin to desolder the components?
So I'm going to take a stab at this but I'm thinking of using "IPEX4 Patch Antenna Base 1.5mm 4th Generation IPEX U.FL MHF4 SMD SMT Solder U.fl/Ipex Connector for PCB Mount Socket Jack Female RF Coaxial Connector" to make the connection on the board and then a standard IPX to SMA lead and coming out the top of the radio SMA... this is the style of connection used in laptops for wifi and cellular... Thoughts? This would solve for a Coax lead (better shielding and grounding)
Would like a a comparison test to the 2 antenna mod verse the one they are selling completed modded but with a single antenna. They claim they also added a high gain mod which I am assuming for HF ?
Yes, but I need to have one modded radio :)
Hello. This mod is for receive only on HF bands (no TX on HF)?
RX only
@@OM0ET Thanks mate!
so the old sma jacket is not used anymore? older versions was different.
is used for VHF/UHF - RX/TX

I just made the mod, but after all I can't enter any frequency after pressing "FM". After "wait" apears, It's on "0" and I don't even get the top line of 20m,30m,40m,50m bands.... I don't know what to do. As much as I reset the device is the same, and I can not insert numbers in that menu, only the conventional menu. Help pleaseee
is there something similar for baofeng uv-82?
So what's the point of the second antenna? Is the main antenna acting like a ground orrr
original SMA connector goes trough the VHF/UHF circuitry with high pass filters. It is not so good for HF reception.
