😂
Huh
Hi guys!
Hey here, Omar guys
@@martpalamine7040 Guys Omar, here hey
this is EXACTLY what i needed, a budget and small creator camera from fuji!
@@iohannroos it doesn't matters if the AF still doesn't work
A looong time ago when I worked weddings I would keep a beater XE on me and once in a while give it to a kid who was all over the place. Gave them something to do, kept them out of my way, and believe it or not once in a while they’d get a dope shot. This gives me share your passion with your kid/friend/whoever/backup vibes :)
I had no idea Fuji made a new X-M camera. Super cool
Looks a great little fun camera. Ideal to throw in a bag or pocket even but I will always want a viewfinder. I still love my x-t30.
Ya me too. Give me this size and an evf and I’ll be right as rain.
@@kodefashmodefa that already exists, it's called x-e4
@@Hebii69 they are close, I wait for the x-m5 guts inside the probably coming x-e5

@@gianni99999 heck I thought the x-m series was gone tho.
Nice review. This is a better camera than I expected. That kit with the 27 is so perfect.
For street photos, use a cheap manual focus small lens like a 25mm f2, set it on F8, hyperfocal zone focus and go nuts shooting all day.
Zone focusing is a nice thing, since the days long before AF was being invented. 🙃
just ask everyone to stand very still to accommodate a slow ss
@@YouSnoozeYouNooze That’s absolutely not how it works. Zone focusing is mainly a daytime street photography technique (in my opinion, the only street photography technique because even Sony's AF isn't good enough to rely on streets). On digital cameras, it's easy-just set the aperture to F8, the shutter speed to 1/500, and let the camera automatically handle the ISO. It’s fast, efficient, and works beautifully for capturing street scenes.
On film cameras, though, it’s a bit trickier since ISO is fixed once you load the film. For example, with Kentmere, you're stuck at ISO 400 unless you push it to 800 or 1600, and that setting applies to the entire 36-exposure roll. If you check out Paulie B's channel, you'll notice that many film street photographers constantly adjust their shutter speed and aperture when moving between light and shadow. However, none of them would drop the shutter speed below 1/250 or use an aperture below F5.6, as that wouldn’t be fast enough for shooting on the move or would result in too shallow a depth of field, requiring more precise distance judgment.
Its a night mare with MF lens on xm5 which has no viewfinder 😢
@@alicele5436
Um, that's the whole point of hyperfocal zone focusing. You don't need to focus.
Besides, focus peaking, heard of it? Works just fine on an LCD display, especially using one-button magnification punch-in.
Goofy, entertaining, but you are a great facilitator.
This is the BEST presentation, wall-to-wall, about this little camera.
I just wish it had come out before I've bought my X-T5 and my X100VI.
I guess I'll add this one to my collection.
Remember: the one who dies with more toys wins the game.
Have a great day Omar!!
I would 100% get this over an X100, and the price it's really great for everything it offers for video.
Hi Omar, pleased to notice that you are an Itchy Boots supporter.
I'm amazed, I expected much lower specs. It's not targeted at me, I'm 63, I like a viewfinder for obvious reasons, and ibis is always helpful. However 20 years ago before I needed reading glasses everywhere, I would have been interested, with my f2 and f2.8 lenses. Seems to target the same market as the s9, but with apsc and a wider range of small lenses. Interesting decision by fuji to go that way... I will stick with the chunkier xt5, xt50, and xs10.
Yeah, I'm 61 and now require reading glasses, so I have the same issues.
One of the great things about the sim dial is that you can set some baseline mods to clarity and tone and WB and grain etc and then cycle through each recipe while carrying the foundation along. It's very versatile. The people complaining have legitimate concerns sometimes but they don't understand that this camera isn't catering to them.
5th group: some of us looking for a 2nd camera angle that pairs well with an XT4 or XT5. …that also makes for a nice grab & go cam. Taking a serious look at this one!
Size is great, but to be honest, I can’t see this taking the place of people’s phones for most of the situations that you mentioned.
No IBIS and flip screen are two deal breakers for me, personally - plus I already have an xe2 and an xs10, so both casual shooting and video are good for me
10:22 consider the Voigtländer 18mm f2.8 and 27mm f2 pancake lenses. They are manual, but built so well, that they are a joy to use and actually focus to infinity. At 18 f2.8 you get a new pancake focal length that barely ever has not enough depth of field to miss focus, and you can always stop down.
Fantastic lenses
Or we need Viltrox to release their chip lens to X-mount
Wow very MKBHD of you to release the camera first impressions as soon as its officially announced
Lack of IBIS for a camera geared towards content creators is a big minus which also really limits the lens selection. For that price point its main competitor is probably Osmo Pocket 3? Which is a mechanical gimbal, but with a 1 inch sensor and fixed lens. Lacking IBIS if I'm a "vlogger" or similar for the stabilization alone I'd probably go with the Osmo Pocket 3.
Basically is an xs-20 stripped of a few features and with the XT50 dial. My experiences with the XS20 tempers my enthusiasm. AI AF is a mess.
Also Sony has ZV-E10II, which also has no IBIS
Osmo pocket takes good photos?
@@vision-gc4hy Content creators mostly want video features.
use it on a gimbal. I'm seriously contemplating getting it for strictly video (no EVF needed) + gimbal (no IBIS needed) work because of the price, the 6K Open Gate support and the decent mike and because I already have some Fuji lens (27, 18-55, 50-230).
That's me, the 4th group, so why have I ordered one when there's no EVF or tilt screen! Oh, I remember, I love shooting street with my X-M1 and the X-S20 I just bought is awesome; so I'll retire the X-M1 to the shelf. Like you, I will do little video grabs.
Hoi Omar,
Again a very good interview! I like the size of this camera, very versitile with various lenses. I enjoy your natural way of presenting with so much build in humor!
Ill still hold out for an xe5. Need that evf and a ss dial
Same here, I hope it retains the X-E4's flush to the body tilting LCD that can face forward when flipped up. As a chronic waist shooter, vari-angle is a very hard sell personally.
Ive got a Canon R5 mark II and this little gem has got me intrigued! Great for an everyday carry.
Fuji just created a perfect camera to go to events and getting pro photos and videos without people annoying you saying you can't use a pro camera
This, coupled with an inexpensive normal lens, would make a great evidence camera. It's compact size makes it ideal for stuffing into a duty bag, it takes nice images, you can add a hot shoe flash or connect it to a more extensive external flash system, and you can put it on a tripod/monopod. Additionally, if you need to video record a crime scene, you've got excellent video possibilities in the palm of your hand. And one more thing, you can keep it charged in your vehicle between uses by just plugging it into a USB outlet.
No IBIS, hmmm… but no viewfinder, that’s a no go for me, unfortunately. Looking promising on the autofocus front, though.
Love your style, thank you for the great video!
Thanks for the review! Sounds like a very cool camera for everyday use and travel. And at an awesome price point. Living in the Netherlands I would have to carry it in a waterproof bag, but at this price point I think that's ok.
Thanks for the video! Still think that x-s20 will be the best fpr the video. But I'm impressed with the size and picture quality!
Yeah, I’m actually thinking of swapping my xs20 to this xm5 just cause of the size.
@@annmoreign you are right, the size is perfect! It looks like there is no recording limits. So I have just one concern about overheating.
Its an easy pick up for me. I've been looking for an affordable small travel camera to replace my Fuji XF10. The X-M5 with the XF27mm F2.8 and its good enough for my needs and cheap enough I don't worry about damaging it.
That's exactly what I was thinking. My XF-1O buttons got all finnicky and then it slowly just conked out lol, the X-M5 seems like a cool replacement.
I have a X-t30 and got a GRIII to throw in my pocket, i'm unsure as small as the X-M5 is, not sure it's really "pocketable"
@@markright6759 I looked at the GRIII but as much as people love them the build quality seems pretty poor for the price. Everyone I know who has one has had issues with dust and quite a few with buttons breaking. The XF-1O had its issues, such a poor AF but it was well made and you could tap to shoot or use snap focus, to get around the AF issues.
Ricoh GRIII or GRIIIx is a better choice
@@janpetru3357 Hmmmm, you might be right. I've always had one of those in mind too, never pulled the trigger..
I love the idea of this camera - but the old battery, the lack of IBIS, and TBH the PSAM dial (i pref the shutter dial) are my top criticisms. Everything else is great - the option to use the 27mm and make it pocketable is 👌
This is exactly the type of camera I've been looking for, small and with an interchangeable lens system. I'm glad that it's a Fuji too. But with the Panasonic S9 I can't help but wonder why they just don't make a full frame compact. Please, Fuji, please!!!
Hey Omar, usual nice vid. Xm5 looks like a tiny xs-20 with the xt50 dial.
Excited to see the smaller body! But disappointed with the film simulation dial and lack of a viewfinder. Hope we get a compact, still photography centered camera in the near future. Great review Omar!
Sony made a6700 (photography) and zve10 ii(videography) with people keep asking for a viewfinder??? If you want one take the xt50 simple as that
Well.. I really like smaller bodies. But yes, I just can't get why that dumb film simulation dial! No No! That could be used for other functions. X-T bodies have the possibilities to customise 7 data banks with quick access at the press of a button.
@@Sorennn94 lol I personally enjoy shooting on a camera with a viewfinder. I never said the X-M5 was a bad camera. I just meant that the camera would have been more my taste since I was looking for a new fujifilm camera that was smaller and had a viewfinder. I own an XT30II which I find a little bulky sometimes. I enjoy shooting on it, I just want it to be more portable. I would get an XT50, but like I said, I don’t like the idea of a film simulation dial. I was just excited to see a new compact camera but slightly disappointed to know that it had no viewfinder. Anyways, I respect your opinion and I respect Fujifilm’s release of a new camera. I know that this camera is one that many people may be looking for.
Those features are part of what this camera is. Look around for an X-E4.
@Original_Pepe_Pupu I don't have any problem with the xm5...at that price you can't beat it. Serious contenders would be the canon r50 or the sony zve10 ii...the only thing I dont get is how difficult is to acquire a new fujifilm (x100vi ) and how much overpriced they can get in the used market
It’s a cute camera. Too bad it will never satisfy UA-cam commenters that want each camera released to satisfy everything on their wishlist 😂.
Yeah. I’m one of them. It’s a good little consumer camera. But for those of us pro users… We’ve been waiting for a few things from Fuji that they aren’t delivering. They’ve had a few years now to catch up and they just aren’t. It seems they’re shifting over to the cutesy kind of stuff such as this, and their Polaroid style cameras, etc. I’m about to save up and sell off my equipment and join the family of Leica
@@Tyrell_Corp2019your comment is wrong and makes no sense left right and centre.
@@dva5610
Left side: Sony and Cannon have superior autofocus.
Right side: Fuji's phone app is atrociously bad.
Center: Unlike Sony, Cannon, Panasonic, RED and Black Magic: Fuji hasn't a single camera offering Netflix video standards. Hoping to make a movie for the network? Outta luck.
And there's more off to the side as well. But I answered 3 for you. :)
This might be my new travel camera. Thanks for the video!
It is just one evf away from being an XE5
Which is why it doesn't have one
Xe4 is more photo oriented definitely, and I think this is smaller, but lots of overlap
An evf would have been cool
@@evindrews I mean all Fuji's have overlap, because they chose to make cameras with effectively all the same internals. Which is actually what I like about Fuji, because you get the same image quality regardless of the camera, but then get to decide what body you want and the features you need to go along with it, like the manual dials, or IBIS, an OVF, open gate recording, a flippy screen, the new battery, etc. etc. I like how they make a bunch of different cameras to suit the users needs, and when I moved to Fuji I chose the X-S10 cause it worked the best for me and my photography. Now I do think they've had some misses recently with the X-T50 and this camera to an extent (especially with the rumored half-frame camera), but one thing Fuji users can't complain about is choice!
I've been waiting for a current small Fujifilm camera. The X-M5 seems to be a great second camera if it would be too inconvenient for me to take my X-T4 with me. I think, I'll give it a try.
Omar, Is the LCD bright enough to see and compose when still photo shooting in direct sunlight?
Nice! This is the camera I wish I had when I was taking my family to Disney. So compact! This could be a great pair to a X-H/T series camera. The XM5 for everyday, the larger model for dedicated shooting.
Hey just checking but when's the stabilization video coming?
Great review. Makes me wonder why I should bother getting an X-t5.
I've watched Chris & Jordan's review and of course Fuji's official launch video, those video's only showed the silver version of the camera, you had the black version and it does look better in black. It's a nice little camera but a little expensive, however I think the big takeaway here is the open gate shutter, I think this is what can expect on Fuji's next two camera's that they teased at the launch video. A camera aimed at the more serious enthusiast , say a X-Pro4 with 40MP open gate, IBIS, traditional flip screen display, higher res screen and OVF, etc yeah I could see me trading in my X-T5 for that.
Thanks for this straight-forward, practical review. Very helpful!
I'd still like to see a little camera without the Fuji Sim dial, give me ISO please? I prefer custom sims. How does it compare size wise vs the 30ii? What about the older 18mm F2? Or do we not talk about that one anymore? Great vid Omar!
Look forward to your compare video, was wondering how it compared to the Z30 for instance.
Love your video man!
Put the Voigtländer 27mm F2 for Fuji with electronic contacts on it. I love the Voigti 27mm F2 on the X-E4 and and X-T50.
Yes. it's a great lens.
Exactly, and honestly I don't see the advantages of this camera compare to the e4, discontinued years ago.
Only the in-camera stabilisation may have placed it on a different class.
Reminds me of the Samsung NX1000. Decent little camera. Autofocused sucked, and colors were ok, but had potential. Looks like they simply refined the concept.
Nice little props to ItchyBoots. Two of my favourite UA-camrs.
Nice, compact and pocketable to carry around as an everyday camera. It has potential to join my collection which I'll only really know after I've tried one out myself. This should be a wake up call for Olympus & Panasonic with their long association with various m4/3rds bodies. on what to offer in a small body. Does it have various Multiple Exposure options ?
It looks really cool, I'm really hoping for an X-E5 or even an X-Pro 4, I love Fuji's rangefinder cameras and maybe someday I'll get my x100VI from Adorama I think I ordered it last April! The AF looked fine, it would be perfect if I still had 20/10 vision but...
Woah that is tiny! Even for a Fujifilm it is tiny!
I think it'd just be weird with anything other than the pancakes... or maybe the 15-45mm
I'd say its pretty average size ?
he he
I like the size but i would miss the shutterspeed dial. I hope the X-E series will be continued.
Perfect with the f2 WR lenses
I have the Olympus E-P7. This camera is small with a MFT sensor. It’s actually incredible how Fujifilm managed to create an even SMALLER body with the larger APS-C sensor. Of course, IBIS had to be sacrificed to make it happen, but that’s understandable. The video specs are amazing for a body this small. I mean… Open Gate!? My A1 doesn’t even have it.
I was waiting for reviews on this as I’m torn between it and the E-P7. TBH, I’m edging towards the Olympus. Do you get on well with yours? I’m not into video so much.
I’m with you on the pancake lens cravings. I’d love a wider one… I’ve got the 16 2.8, but I’d love something that’s a bit flatter.
WOW! Thanks for a great into to this interesting little camera. Still waiting for the Xpro-4.... 😢
Cool camera. Great review! Concise, informative, entertaining.
Fuji can i trade the FilmSim wheel for IBIS? i still dont understand why these companies are still withholding one of the most important and useful features ever created for vlogging and photography. not to mention the small number of OIS-enabled Fuji lenses lol.
That was one moustache-twirling pocketing at 01:04.
Given that the film sims and SOOC quality are a massive USP for Fujifilm, the sim wheel looks killer!
Need a showdown with the Sony zv and Nikon z30
I'd love to see it against the Nikon Z30, Olympus EM-10IV, and the Sony ZV1-II just to see if it is actually better than some other smaller sensor options.
No viewfinder and tilty-flippy screen is a pass for me. I was looking for an alternative for the unattainable X100VI but this release comes out too short.
It’s light and perfect for travel but also needs a good pancake lens which is also unattainable (Fuji 27mm always out of stock) Seriously Fuji, why is it so hard to buy things from you! And with a price point of almost the same cost of a new Sony a7iii, I will be shopping around for something else.
Thanks for the review and your honest opinions as always Omar. I’ve always enjoyed tour videos!
Same here on the flippy screen. My wishlist was not fulfilled today. I wanted tiny… check, but then also Tilt screen for shooting at the hip. I have the X-S20 im using now for hybrid shooting… but hoping someday to have a perfect dedicated everyday carry (with either fixed 16/18 or tiny pancake in that focal range) for family and street shooting. X70 would be perfect if not for the obnoxious used price, mediocre autofocus and updated sims.
Try a Voigtländer 27mm manual. Perfect.
@@erin.v.z
It looks like Fuji is trying to compete with Sony in the vlogging market, which I get-it’s a growing space. But Sony is already leading the charge, with Lumix also becoming a strong contender, especially with their recent introduction of LUTs.
Personally, I’d prefer Fuji to stay focused on what they excel at: creating cameras that capture photography with soul.
Fun video that is welcome from the usual early impressions videos. Now I'm wondering if one of those small camera gimbals would work well with the X-M5 for the times you want a bit more stabilization than OIS alone.
Thank you for the very informative video. You are very good at this and your reviews are much appreciated.
Wow is that the perfect EDC camera with the 27mm ? Close to perfect !
I bought a xt3 back in 2020 but I rarely use it these days cuz it’s heavy for everyday use as I go to my uni. Might sell it to get this one!
my gripe with the filmsim dial is that...
previous fujis have unmarked dials that can be customised
the XT100 for example has an unmarked dial
so, if you want it as an ISO dial, perfect
if you want it as a film-sim dial, perfect as well
I'm currently carrying the X-T100, indeed I'm using the left dial for ISO where by default it's a filmsim dial. The LCD can tilts up and down in place while still being able to go to the side and face forward (useful for vertical high/low shots and vlogging). All in all it's a very mediocre camera but the little neat touches it got always make it a joy to use.
There is one more pancake lens in the 18mm f2. But that one doesn't have WR. I've been searching for something like the Ricoh Griii when I don't want to carry the Zf or Q3 so this is intriguing.
Does the xm5 have WR?
@ it does not.
this will be really good to pair with 7artisan 18mm cap lens!
Or Viltrox 28mm f.4.5 if and when it is released for X mount
Spend 800 euros/dollars on a camera and then put a lens cap lens on it?
@@kilianhrkm why not? do we have to obey rules? will it harm the camera? ur logic is not applicable unless ur putting a cheap battery on an expensive camera, that can do harm with your system
@@kilianhrkm First, the quality of these lenses is good enough to take great pictures if the photographer is capable. They have some flaws like older lenses but it’s not like that photos from the 70s or 80s are ugly for today’s standards. Second, cameras don’t cost £800 or more because they offer great image quality but for a bunch of other reasons and features that you can use with more sophisticated lenses which you can always add to your lens set.
Do you own xt30 or xt50? Would love to see a physical comparison between these cameras.
It's there, the successor of the X70! With interchangeable lenses!
Autofocus still bad. Also in your test video. Camera loses focus when you are further away from the camera, the background gets sharp.
Hey Omar do you happen to have any videos where you talk about Fuji cameras for beginners?
The size is one thing, but I think that for $100 more, for the more serious enthusiast, the XT30 (or the XT30 II) which you can still get at least as of right now, might be a better buy. But if size/weight is a concern, or you're doing video, then the X-M5 is the one. For me, I'd pay an extra $100 for the XT30 series for an EVF and probably slightly more durable build quality (since I mostly shoot stills and not really video, the flip out screen and having to use the screen to compose was never something I enjoyed with my other cameras; the flip out screen I could get used to, as my Zf has one, but the lack of an EVF is somewhat of a deal-breaker for me. If Fuji, NIkon, and others had an add-in EVF then I would certainly consider the X-M5 or the Nikon Z30 for example. As a backup camera this would be fine in my view (for me) but not as a primary shooting camera. Now, I may still pick one up as an "everyday carry" camera though, but I'll have to wait and see. I actually sort of want something like an X-E2 really though, but those are still quite expensive on the used market, as are most Fuji cameras, so this might be the best value for a new camera in Fuji's line currently.
I have an X-M1 which I usually use with the 15-45 - love it for small size. Focus and video not so good on the old one so I'm already looking up the price on this!
Well done , thank you for your very amusing presentation again. I agree more pancakes like a 23mm or a 35mm are needed or a revamped 18mm. When it comes i hope to see you to show it. Thanks :-).
A small camera with a few of the small Fuji primes. Perfect. I'm interested. I would prefer an evf and was hoping for an xe-5 but it's not a dealbreaker for me.
I just got the call to pick up my x100-6 but now I am doubt I should get the Mx5 instead since I already have the XH2s and the XT3 and the XT20 it all started with 😃
Thanks. I want one. I’d mainly use it for video. I just hope that Fuji doesn’t throttle the production of this model, like with the X-E4 and the X100VI.
4:57 wow, that comparison with the (I assume) an iPhone Max caught me off guard. It's REALLY small!
Using my XS20 & 27 pancake for travel, & portability, works for me. Also use the XT$ if I'm in the mood or depends on location.
such a nice release - i am sure they will sell it like hell! clever move, fuji. but for me personal (unfortunately) no buy because of the missing EVF. So sad, i love how it looks. not as gorgeous as my x100, but close 😍
I was going to mention the 18 mm 1:2 pancake, but it appears it has been discontinued? That's a pity! I like mine.
To make the X-M5 more appealing Fuji really needs to make some more pancake lenses. A revamped 18mm and perhaps a 23mm would be great. I would love to have this camera with a few pancake lenses to keep it a pocketable camera otherwise I may as well go and purchase an X-T5.
Hmm.. the first thing to strike me wasn't the camera but the plain brown cardboard box! Seems like Fujifilm decided to copy Sony? Well the XM5 microphone is sort of a copy of the ZVE1. Heck, Fuji could have just added an EVF and IBIS and call it the XE5, or kept the design of the X70 and call this the X80.
This is what I need to upgrade my X-E3 for multicam video interview shoot. I'm definitely saving up for this.
I’d like to know more about the 15-45 lens… does it do manual zoom and focus on the lens or are they on a rocker?
And thanks to UA-cam, it won't be available until the successor is announced. Fujifilm is the camera brand that has photo cameras in its range that are not for sale. Or only if they are offered as second-hand.
Nice Itchy Boots hoodie. She is an amazing traveler and content creatior
Hi Omar! How was the heat situation when filming with the X-M5? I was about to buy a used X-T3 for about 750 USD until I saw this and almost cried of happines (I still take my X-M1 everywhere.)
Man you have such a cool job.
This or ricoh griii? My main cameras are gfx 100s and a7rv. I need a small camera in my life. I used to own the gr ii and loved it but gave it to a friend that wanted to get into photography. I do not mind that the xm5 doesn't have an evf just like the griii. It doesn't necessarily need to be pocketable for me as I would put in my sling bag either way. I do like the lens options for the xm5 but I do love the simpicty of the gr iii.. what do you think?
Yes. Short arms, reason for viewfinder 😂. So I choose Z50. Btw, Alpiner on wrist?
Ooh interesting, I’ve left the system now but I’d have been v interested in this. Will they finally revamp the 18mm f2 for this??
I want the xpro-2 form factor and behavior updated with newer guts ... or I'll go buy the Z8 was going to tomorrow anyway. (good video though, nicely done Omar)
This is like a Fuji version of a Sony ZV-1/ZV-E10!
Except Sony has good autofocus
Hey Omar,
I own a XPRO3 which is pretty compact as it is. What are your thoughts on having the E-M5 as a everyday carry?
Looks promising.
I should go more often to New York and do street photography in morning. Who knows I may run into Omar🤪..!
With no Evf it would be better with a drop down tilt screen, as it is the screen will be poking out the side all the time you are using it flagging (no pun intended) that your taking a photo not great for any discrete photography. No ibis is the other big no no. Pity as it's size makes it a carry anywhere.
Agree about the screen. This design makes it awkward to use the touch to shoot function with the screen sticking out the side and still keep the camera steady.
Can you still create custom film sim profiles from the likes of FujiXWeekly with the XM5? really looking to get one of these once it releases :)
thanks!. am interest to hear your views on digital stabilisation. I am considering the S9 (I can get it similar price maybe 100 dollars more but dont like the lense choice) and ZF (not too much more and it has nice pancake lenses but its heavy).
It is an interesting little camera that's gonna check a lot of boxes for a lot of people.. personally I'm gonna wait and see what the X-E5 has to offer, I'd be willing to pay a little more and sacrifice a little bit of size for IBIS, ISO dial and tilty screen.. but this is tempting as a travel/walk around option
Adorama ftw!
