As you know, when purchasing a used vehicle, there are several factors to consider. While fuel efficiency, safety ratings, and performance are important, we often overlook a critical component-the transmission. The transmission plays a very important role in transferring power from the engine to the wheels, allowing the vehicle to move smoothly.
Man, if the transmission of your vehicle fails, trust me, you’ll spend a lot of money on repairs and it can even leave you stranded on the side of the road. Consumer Reports data has shown that certain SUV models have a significantly higher failure rate when it comes to transmissions. Today, we'll take a look at those models and their specific model years that you should avoid.

The Ford Focus in the years mentioned was saddled with that ridiculous 6 speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission. Having driven a few of these myself, I can say that the driving experience was not good at all. This transmission was definitely not one of Ford's better ideas. If one insists on a Focus from those years, go with one equipped with the 5-speed manual; these were much better in terms of drivability and reliability. As for the Nissans from those years, those CVTs were garbage!

A lot of those CVT problems are caused by owners not knowing that you cannot drive a CVT equipped vehicle the same as you do a conventional automatic transmission equipped vehicle they simply cannot take being driven hard on a regular basis. You know hard acceleration from a standing still start. They cannot take abuse. Also, you have to have them serviced regularly fluid and filter changes every say 30,000 miles. I think if people would do these things many of the failures would be avoided.
