The key is to have knowledge about the appropriate model, trim, and year to avoid any potential drawbacks. That's why we have assembled a list of 10 pre-owned SUVs with reasonably good mileage that you can purchase for under $20,000. Recommending the GLK is absolutely crazy. These vehicles along with the whole Mercedes, Audi & BMW lineups have proven to be insane money pits. How can you possibly recommend these vehicles??

As a BMW owner I will say you are completely correct. It's one thing after another. The only saving grace is that I have a super ultra low emissions (SULEV) engine which is warrantied for 15 years or 150k miles. Luckily most of those issues have been covered so far. Still unreliable AF though.

I own a 2018 Outlander GT V6, good to see it made number 4 on the list, no issues at all, so I agree. No CVT either on this one.
There has to be a good reason this made in Japan SUV has a 10 year warranty, flies under the radar of most buyers. I took the zero percent interest deal in 2018 and now it's 100% paid off.
Just had a full detail done on it, with ceramic coating, and it looks brand new like it just came off the show room floor. This thing got me out a scary watery ditch one time, very safe AWD system.

We had good luck with our 2008 Ford Escape with V-6 engine. At 200,000 miles only had to replace the struts and water pump. Changed the oil with synthetic oil every 4,000 miles and Transmission, Differential, PTO gear oil synthetic every 30,000 miles. I wish the newer SUVs like the newer Escape did not evolve to look more like station wagons than boxy SUVs as I need an SUV that will fit 2 dog boxes side by side (47 inches of width between the wheel wells).

It's sitting at 98k as of today and hope it continues for a long time to come. The only complaint I have is road noise and with the greenhouse(which I love) as big as it is there's probably not muxh to be donw about it. It's only nothersome on the hwy so I guess we will invest in a hwy car and use the Rav for everything else.

My 2015 RAV4 gave up the CVT at 110.000 miles. It cost me $8,000 to rebuild it from new and used cars at AAMCO which was expensive, but so far works. They added some cooling fan to the transmission as well. Just FYI If you have a jerky shifting or it kicks when you put R from Park, or it hesitates to gear up, RUN away from it :) the CVT will die soon! I had 4 Toyota services check for the problem before it completely died, and they were unable to diagnose the problem. You need to open the transmission, and it cost around $1,500 to do so. Anyway, you need to check, if the service really change the OIL in transmission...

I put 174k miles on a 2012 Outlander GT V6. My son has it now and it will turn 200k in January 2024. Only 2 things outside of regular maintenance needed replaced in its lifetime so far: cat back exhaust and blower motor, both after 150k. We are overhauling front and rear suspension ourselves due to rubber deterioration and corrosion in the spring.

The Nissan Xterra, Mercedes GLK, Subaru Forester and Mitsubishi Outlander are NOT recommended picks according to Consumer Reports “Most Reliable” Used Car magazine published April 2023.
The top three listed here are obvious choices IMHO but if you find them under 20 grand, they likely have well past 150K on the clock (which still ain’t bad.)

2017 rav4 is a pos. Two cv joints gone and transmission has torgue converter issues still that should have been a recall. Burns oil faster than any other vehicle I’ve owned with frequent oil changes. Pcv valve is under the intake. 500 dollar job for 10 dollar part. Brutal pos Toyota.

Some of these are good choices, and some are not. I've used Consumer Reports before, and it is not a reliable source. A better source is a good mechanic. I think the Toyotas and Hondas are good choices, and possibly also Fords. Also, stay away from CVTs and turbos, which should further keep maintenance costs low.

You lost me at anything Mercedes and anything turbocharged. I own two turbo cars currently, and have owned over a dozen through the years. Great fun, great power, but not good for someone looking for 200-300k+ longevity. Yes, they will make it if you take care of them. If you baby them, that misses the point of owning one! Heat and wear are the enemy of any engine. Turbos make lots of both.
Mercedes, even a minor repair that most cars would need as regular maintenance (main belt, spark plugs/coils, etc.) is 4-5x the price of what it will be for a Toyota or Honda.
