I’d say Crystal Skull feels like an Indiana Jones movie. The villains are different but still act the same, the time period is different but still fairly immersive, and the action and quips are largely just as good. If anything I’d say Dial of Destiny struggles to be an Indiana Jones movie because it doesn’t have as many of the same creative talent behind it as Crystal Skull does.
I agree with all of this. I think Dial is a pretty good movie, but just not an Indiana Jones movie. I dont want to feel heavy emotions when watching Indy
@@PointlessRewind-PRI understand what you mean, but to be fair, I think feelings like that were to be expected for Ford's last time playing Indiana Jones 😢
@@MisterWiza yeah, thats why I still tear up watching it...its clearly an important and meaningful experience for Harrison Ford and that comes through on screen.
I have a strange relationship with Dial. I think as a movie, its good. But as an Indiana Jones movie, it doesnt work for me. It focuses on things i enjoy in other movies but saps the fun and spirit from an Indiana Jones movie. Thanks for watching!
Also important to remember is that unlike all the legacy sequels that are coming out these days, the first iteration of the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull script was produced in 1994, just 5 years after Last Crusade. It has strong ties to the original trilogy, it's not *just* paying lip service to the brand.
Good point, it absolutely is not a cash grab and its not just relying on nostalgia...its a legit sequel with heart. It is deeply deeply flawed...but its also charming. Thanks for watching!
And literally the only thing that was holding us back from an Indy 4 in the 90s was George Lucas everyone but Lucas liked the script. I love Lucas he's a great creative mind, but there are places he goes too far in sometimes because he's so stubborn.
Yeah I definitely agree there arent any bad Indy movies though my favorite is Raiders. When I see people say Dial or Skull are cheap cashgrabs, it bothers me. Those movies are flawed but you can tell that many of the players cared deeplt
I agree its a better Indy movie than Dial. I think Dial is a better movie with some weighty themes and character arcs...which kinda undermined what I want from an Indy movie so its a way worse Indy movie. Also amazing channel name and i gotta check out some of your videos!
nuke in the fridge has been an easter thing egg in a few games lol. I saw this movie in the theaters with my pops when I was a kid and even back then I Knew it wasn’t better than the OG trilogy but we still liked it. this is one of those over hated movies
Yeah its definitely overhated. When people say it doesnt belong in the series im confused. In my.opinion, theres still enough care and heart that went into this movie that shows this was an important movie to the creators and actors. Compare that to a movie like Die Hard 5 where Bruce Willis was on autopilot..i think Crystal Skull gets a bad rap. Thanks for watching and you watching it with your dad may inspire me to see if my dad wants to watch it with me over the holidays! Hahaha ive been dreading it because I have no idea how he would react to the monkey swinging scene
Honestly, I think what they tried to do with Crystal Skull, partularly with the 2nd half of the movie, is make it more of a comedy. The whole jumping off a cliff into a tree thing, nuking the fridge, swinging through the trees, the sword fight... it just didn't land the way they thought it would. The first half hits the right beats, has a good mix of action and humour, but the second half just feels tonally disconnected from what we expect from an Indiana Jones movie. It's almost like a parody of one. That's not to say that I dislike the movie. If you turn your brain off and don't try to critique it, it's fine.
@@peteuplink thats interesting because I had the opposite impression. I agree about turning your brain off for this but I thought they went for humor early on, with the snake bit, the Brody statue, the gophers. and the scene with Indy talking to the student from the floor. And while some of it misses, enough hit for me for it to feel like an Indiana Jones movie. The second half felt like they shoehorned spectacle in just because they had the technology and so rather than have grounded action scenes, everything feels weightless. Thanks for watching!
I enjoyed your retrospective. Crystal Skull has more campiness against the first three films, but it still has some really good scenes. Surviving the hurled fridge aside, the moment where Indy realizes he's in an atomic testing replica town is done really well and impactful. What the heck would someone do if they were in Indy's shoes at ground zero and could hear a countdown to an atomic bomb detonation. The greasers cafe scene and motorcycle chase scenes are a lot of fun. For me, Mac felt a bit extraneous as a character written into the story. Indy getting his happily ever after with Marion (and son Mutt) was a lovely moment to end the film on.
Thank you! And totally agree with your take on the fridge scene. Its never bothered me because the setup and Indy' s frantic bewilderment reminds me of prior movies. Like its a spiritual successor to the plane crashing scene in ToD where he had no idea what to do.
The answer is simple: no. One easy way to tell: Spielberg after shooting the trilogy explained that in order for the adventure to be believable, you have to make sure that your hero goes through hell, essentially most dangerous situations possible that are still believable to the audience. During every movie in the trilogy you can feel the danger that IJ faces and scenes where he's nearly dead. Nothing like that happens in IJ4 and IJ5, in both cases Indy does literally unbelievable feats, so at no point you actually think he's in any real danger. It's honestly a shame that both Spielberg himself and another director that has him in high regard both forgot about this very important point while making an IJ movie...
While I disagree with the answer, I totally agree with your rationale. Indy barely feels like hes in danger in either movie during the action scenes. I think he almost does in the prologue of CS but not quite. And also, while him escaping in the fridge is stupid, I do think the 10 sec before that captures that frantic, manic energy Indy has when hes in danger. I do think CS does enough well for me to consider it a part of the series but respect your pov
Brooo your edits were SO funny 😂😂😂 thanks for taking the time to make them! Got me laughing good, And also, appreciate your thoughts on the films as always :) I saw this one in cinema too with my Dad (big Indy fan too) and I think we enjoyed it for the camp factor for sure, I think you’ve done a great job at analysing
Thank you so much and glad u enjoyed the jokes! Yeah I think the campiness is one thing i didnt focus enough on because thats a big difference between this and the OG trilogy. Those were campy but Crystal Skull doubled down on it. Thanks for watching!
Thanks! Yeah part of the inspiration for how I tackled the movie was there were a lot of comments on my Last Crusade video saying some variation of "there are only 3 movies in the series". And I really think there are bright spots that shine through. Thanks for watching!
When it came out I hated it, but after watching a few times since then (and watching the Dial of Dysentery) I've softened my stance a lot. I still see the franchise as three movies rather than five, but this one isn't as bad as I first thought, so so much better that the last, which isn't an Indiana Jones movie, it a movie with somebody called Indiana Jones in it (occasionally).
Yeah I mostly feel the same way...i think of it though as a 5 movie series with 3 classics, one average but flawed film and one non-Indiana Jones movie that would work much better if it wasnt about Indiana Jones
As far as I’m concerned it’s the last Indy film. In Crusade he rode off into the sunset, in Crystal Skull he settled down. That’s as good an ending as the good doctor could have gotten in my mind. And I actually liked the alien aspect of the story. I mean, the indy films were always homages to the old B movies of Lucas and Spielberg’s youth. And if you’re going to set it in the 50’s why not commit to it?
Yeah I agree. I didnt think the ending was necessarily earned but these movied arent supposed to be taken seriously which is why i still find him settling with Marion satisfying. And why I think Dial just feels off....its too heavy with themes and character nuance which is not what this series is
Rewatched this before seeing Dial in the theater. All in all, not a bad film, and I think the only real cringe wasn’t the fridge… but close. Not even the monkey swing, which stood up okay as a moment of Spielbergian whimsy. The only thing that really felt cheesy beyond cheese was the CGI alien at the end.
I’ve always enjoyed this one. It certainly has its flaws, yet it retains that escapist Indy charm and manages to feel connected to the others. I found Dial to be depressing and lacking the spark of fun and adventure of the first four.

@PointlessRewind-PR I'm still with her 16 years on 🤙 If that tells you anything about her patience.😅 The 50's bar fight and motorcycle chase was peak Indy. "What are you, like 80?" was funny at the time, but now he almost is! As you said, around the halfway mark, it gets worse. The ultra violence of the earlier films is nowhere to be seen. The opening with the Russians mowing down the troops is implied, Raiders would have been a bloody massacre. Not that is what anyone wants to specifically see, but it's an example of how they sanded the edges off the film. Also, I NEVER saw Marion as the love of his life (?)At the time, I was just glad to have him back but, yeah problems.
You should check out the Reddit link I put in the video description. Theres a fan re-edit of the movie that makes the lighting more in line with the OG trilogy and many of the poorer elements are completely removed.
@PointlessRewind-PR Oh yes, one is a flawed but okay film that treats Indy, the other characters and the fans with respect, made by the original creatives. The other is another project to serve in Kathleen Kennedy's apparent goal of destroying Lucas Film. That "subverts expectations" and "deconstructs" the original male lead. Turning Indy into a worthless loser who nobody cares about and is almost completely useless throughout the film. Instead, of course, we get a random girl boss who doesn't really need Indy and is better than him at everything and gets to stop Indy from making a stupid mistake by knocking him out with one punch, taking away all agency Indiana Jones had and making him not a hero. The only reason Indy got any amount of a happy ending was because the test screenings were so bad Disney made them change it several times until they got the least bad. It was just another film where the old straight, white hero had to be tor. down to make room for a new "modern" hero who lacks any good character. Not to mention the story is just crap and time travel almost always sucks. There is a reason Dial of destiny is one of the biggest flops of all time
I remember thinking this was fine/not bad when I caught it on TV going in with low expectations. However, I couldn't recall much about it - including many of the scenes you showed here. Thus, I think its biggest flaw for me is not being memorable. Also, I liked Shia Lebouf (sp?), but was somewhat disappointed with how his and Karen Allen's characters weren't effectively used.
Thats interesting, i had a very different reaction. The 4 or 5 elements that bothered me REALLY bothered me and made it so when id watch it, I was just completely annoyed. Its only recently that ive come around to it, where ive accepted the bad parts and truly appreciate its qualities.
