Description:
This is an overview vlog for the first major update for We Who Are About To Die.
The Combat Controls Update is coming September 13th 2023!
The Update features Third Person Mode, Controller Support, Throwing system overhaul, tons of content, graphics improvements, quality of life changes and bugfixes.
If you're new, welcome! I solo developed this game over the past 8 years. Its a gladiator themed roguelite with RPG and simulation elements and physics based combat. The launch of the game was life changing and I will be a game dev for the rest of my life now! :)

Congrats. The music is fantastic, and it fits the theme perfectly. It is memorable, and is something I found to be humming long after I had turned off my PC. 😃😃❤👍👍
@@predragpesic5953 If you mean the main theme, it was written by Marius, the other composer, the compliment goes to him. I wrote the career menu background music and some of the jiggles like when the title victory pops up. But anyway, thank you in his name as well!

3rd person makes it look so much nicer visually damn, didn't think it would make that much of a difference

It's really crazy how much perspective plays into the feel of a game. Just think if Gears of War was a top-down shooter instead of a pulled-back over-the-shoulder perspective.
I enjoyed this game when it released, forgot about it (sorry), but now I am reminded of it, and it's improved! Commenting for the algorithm.

effort is crystal clear to be honest the game the camera the throwing mechanics wasnt that bad but yes the get good scale was too high show this guy the support he deserve the game has huge potential when everything come together

No game is for everyone and this one is really really unique (great thing imo) but the new camera I think is going to make a world of difference. Everything in this update is great but that's going to be the game changer.

I was hooked into the concept of the game from the first demo. I am very glad to see our early adoption and purchase of the game has helped a single developer turn his vision and initial build into a small game development company that is refining the product in so many ways. Brother... this game is incredible, from the concept to the follow through. I respect the hell out of you for coming up with the idea and making such a great game. In my first few hours, I got to the point where I was super invested in the game and when I got down to barely any health there was an insane amount of nerves and adrenaline running through me. Not a lot of games have ever made me feel that way. Way to go! Respect man!
So happy I got this game and to find out we get amazing, comprehensive updates is even more mind blowing than the game itself

Really neat idea for a game as i've always felt like a true gladiator genre should exist.
This game is a gem. 55 hours I've played it so far and with the new update, likely a bunch more coming. Very impressive that a solo developer could not only finish a project, but actually put out a high quality product!

Already really loved the game, but these changes will only make the game even better. Also speaks a lot about you as a developer that you can handle the negative feedback and use it to make positive changes. That is unfortunately not common enough from developers, both indie and big budget. So immense respect for you!
Dude! This update just fucking rocks!
Previously camera was a major turning point to me, because you had to turn your sensitivity way low to hin anything, and nothing impressive appeared on a screen.
Now it's just a mayhem! Swords swinging, camera enhancing strikes, it's scientificly 35% more fun to play.
I instantly fell in love with this game. Glad to be reminded I haven't played it for a while.

oh wow nice to see you here! yes of course :D this game is actually technically set in that roleplaying world (but thousands of years before our campaign), not many people know that!
This is the type of game i've been wanting for awhile. I bought it on release and been enjoying it ever since tysm and I hope you find even more success throughout early access
My friend got me to pick up your game back during EA launch and told me about how it was made by a single dev, so it was easy to put 2 + 2 together on why you looked so dam tired in this video lol (tis the life). Glad to hear you've got yourself a small team now.
Since 2010, we had been talking about how there needs to be an arena based game with RPG stat/equipment mechanics, hub travelling (different markets + arenas), crowd cheering/roaring, etc. and this is probably one of the only games to have nailed this 100%. We were big fans of Smite's Coliseum map, GW2's Eternal Coliseum map, etc. any game/map out there that brought the cheering/roaring of the crowd. Believe me when I say all of that makes the difference in these kinds of games. Keep up the great work!
Looks sweet! One thing that comes to my head - those spikes at the end of logs are drawing so much attention to them because are so bright. If I might suggest something I would tone down the color, wood would go darker anyways. Could be some light brownish... Something less white as it is visually contrasting with rest of the view like something extremely important... Just a thought - you do as you are pleased of course. Much luck in development!

No seriously, spending time heads down just toiling away at the game takes a lot from oneself and people sincerely enjoying my work is what keeps me going. I love the gladiator fantasy and this game catered to it nicely. It was a bit jank but I'm so glad I stuck with it. It has a ton of potential and I'm excited to see it flourish further.
Mostly looking forward to seeing new arenas since most of them already look and feel so great ^^
Loving the 1 vs Many update! I didn't like how the ai would constantly dogpile giving no room to swing.
The changes you added to this game are AMAZING! I love the new character design and I think the change to the camera is a good decision. Tons of work to do that though so kudos.
I used to play Swords & Sandals growing up and this is essentially that revamped. Very good game that gives me a sense
of nostalgia
Loving this update. The shop used to feel incredibly disappointing but now it feels like it's actually giving me feasible options more often, making the whole experience more engaging. The third person mode is AWESOME I played a little in the pre-release test and it's definitely much better now. Love this game, been playing since launch and can't wait to see where it goes.

Insta bought this as soon as it hit Steam, sank over 100 hours into it in just over a week, mastered the FreeCam and the many options that opens up for you, and would say this is THE number 1 Gladiator themed game from the days of the CPC 464 to present day. Amazing seeing your progress from seven years ago to today. Blows my mind you did all this yourself until recently getting the extra 3 devs. Working on my own indie Tactics RPG and I was lucky enough to find a few fellow students to help with the project. Keep it up!!

Keep doing your thing Jordy! Those are great QoL changes and awesome additions that really change the feel of the game. Also giving the player the ability to switch camera modes on the fly in combat is great. You can really be proud of yourselves for creating such a unique and fun game! :)

when I got this game, it was tons of fun the only thing I had issues with was the throwing thank God you listened to the feedback because, man was it hard to pull off and when I saw you were alone, and the game was still that good I was blown away I've been telling my friends about it, and they seem interested to play it. Thank you for creating this incredibly fun game.
what the hell is this. An honest developer who faces big problems and isn't too scared to actually show the reviews AND change the thing upside down. I'm not gonna lie, this convinced me of buying this game in a few weeks when my salary is in.

My only request/input (aside from steamdeck compatibility which probably will be fixed with the controller support) and others may disagree is I kind of actually like the hidden equipment reveal feature. It does a weird brain thing where I'm kind of excited to see which new item is available. But once the new item is revealed it's never unknown again, you just always see it. So there's no more surprise in that regard once you progress. Maybe other people will think that it's too inconvenient, but the item reveal is so quick it's hardly an inconvenience. Just immediately seeing a legendary item takes the wind out of it being legendary but having to identify it adds a little bit of anticipation in my humble opinion.

As someone who is studying programming, I can't imagine the chaos you guys have to go through.
Already loved what WWAATD was. These changes already bring it to the level those classic Gladiator games, but with seemingly AAA polish. Bravo Jordy and the crew. Amazing work. Can't wait to get immersed with the 3rd person mode!
Too many bugs and oddities still to call it AAA but we're doing our best with limited resources (time really) haha!

I can't deny that the camera put me off the game pretty much immediately around the end of the tutorial in my first playthrough and I've just patiently waited because I knew I couldn't be the only one who hated it lol. Loved the game concept though so kept my fingers crossed and I highly appreciate your efforts for this.

I've been playing the game for a while even before this big update but it's the first time I watched your Devlog. I immediately liked your personality and how you love the game and the community you built buy making a game for people who craved gladiator games. I remember back in the day playing Gladiator Begins on the PSP how I missed that now you came along and dropped this masterpiece. Please continue the love and passion man. Thank you!
Edit: Man, you dare challenge me to finish Lionslayer. Just you wait! Also, I now understand why it now has become challenging doing 1 vs manies lol. I thought I lost my touch when I took a rest due to work then when I came back after the update I was getting bodied easily. I love how the AI was upgraded to flank and fight more realistic. Good job!
Wow, love this update out of nowhere. This game was so much fun to begin with, even with understandable jank. Personally, I give throwing changes 3 thumbs up. Who doesn't want a gladiator game? There's so many clever touches, buy this immediately!
