- I was informed of something that's called "The Melee Iceberg". It's an image depicting the DEEP LORE within Melee's game and the competitive community. Is it 100% accurate? Let's find out.

I feel like Asum Saus has switched loads of this up, I know about loads of the deep stuff but missing some of the early stuff because I sort of joined the scene through asum saus videos
Yeah I made a lot of this Iceberg before I even heard of the AsumSaus channel - I suppose some of these items could be higher now that they have proper, non-forum exposure.
13:20 the rusty chemical smell from the CRT is from Ozone, which is 3 oxygen atom per molecule instead of the standard 2. Ozone is created when electrons or high energy photons come into contact with the O2 oxygen molecules in the air.
It's interesting that you'd describe it as rusty because rust is oxidized iron and ozone is oxidized oxygen. Noses are very sophisticated chemical detectors.
The all-messages speedrun is easily the most cursed thing on the list.

Missile spawn limit is how samus can only have I think 3 missiles onscreen at any time, and shooting a fourth missile will make the oldest one instantly destruct.
Ganon’s second jab is how in earlier versions of melee, if you put a bunny hood on Ganon and slow the game down in training mode (I think), you can see he had a second jab that was abandoned and it has an animation but no hit box.
Cool video Toph! It was interesting to hear your perspective as someone who’s been in the community for so long, since I’ve mostly spectated for a long time.

Another reason the Pichu hack worked for so long is that few people have played enough Pichu to notice small changes to frame data and damage and stuff. If someone had tried to hack Fox or any popular character they probably would've noticed much sooner

Toph the distinct tournament smell is more particular to small locals in college dorms, small shop, etc., NOT big convention centers.
Having a local at my friends small ass house with no AC in 90 degree weather, with 10+ CRTs and burning hot wiis and gamecubes, with guys who would have been sweating anyway cause of how tryhard they’re going… the smell was intense. Not gonna lie.
I wore thick jeans and a button down cause I thought the house had AC. I was so hot that I gladly put on my friend’s dirty gym clothes that he changed from
I joined the community in 2008 (god, I feel old) and this video really takes me back with all the crazy stuff from back then. Good stuff!
A lot of the data from this list also came from players who haven’t played since 2008 or earlier - just to gauge what details about the game and community stuck with them. It made feel old too lol

triangle jump explanation is pretty funny- triangle jumping was an old marvel2 tech (super jump forward, airdash diagonal down) and it totally makes sense that FGC heads would've tried to make it a thing in melee too
If I remember correctly Ganon's second jab refers to the fact that he actually was supposed to have a second jab. I saw a video on that I think a Asumsaus one.
Yeah, in version 1.0 I think? If you give him the bunny ears item, he gains a second jab animation. I remember seeing this in one of those "melee is broken" videos as well
on version 1.01 of melee i think with a bunny hat on and maybe some other specifications, you can do his second jab

Before I did my digging to make the Iceberg, I personally underestimated just how many people knew about this - I even had some coworkers who were non-gamers that knew about it. It was one of those things where, if you brought up Melee, someone might say “oh god, _______ have you heard of the Ganondorf Challenge?!” I don’t know why, but this was the case in multiple circles of people who have never spoken. . .

Also I'm pretty sure Isai and Shai drops are different. Isai Dropping is like what you described, but Shai Drops are like instant shield drops. Basically if you're holding right and you shield and immediately roll down the stick, you'll shield drop but the shield never fully activates.
That list was so wrong when it came to how publicly known things are.

i remember triangle jumping lol, sex kicks got their name from macD i think, basically because just like an erection, a sex kick, gets weaker the longer its out.
For ganons second jab i assumed most players knew that in early builds and even still in the code of the game, ganon was meant to do two jabs just like falcon. they changed this for the one super jab he has now. you can see frame data footage that shows this, however i dont think it has a hitbox cuz it was cut pretty early.

I know lots more people from outside of the community that know about the ProJared challenge than know about the Smash Documentary. And by all means; if you can make a better Iceberg, please do it - we could certainly use it
