When he welcomed Hoffman on the show I literally clapped. He is one of my favorite actors, along with Daniel Day Lewis, and Paul Thomas Anderson my favorite Director.
@@futuropasado exactly. Says a lot about society, mental illness and most importantly of all it explores heartache and the importance of our memories and our pasts.
@@mmmanutd Tom Cruise is Scientology's golden boy, he's their biggest celebrity follower. So he probably would not approve of this film. Also it's pretty hilarious if you think about it - Tom Cruise was in Magnolia, a previous film by Paul Thomas Anderson. Probably not much left of that relationship.
Tom Cruise gave permission to make it. He paid the director who he worked with in the past. Maybe hypnosis is stronger than we thought if it can keep idiots with low iq like cruise in the hypnotic state longer than science ever thought.
I miss Philip Seymour Hoffman so much! I've been on a big Ben Mendelsohn kick lately and see them both as such unique and powerfully great character actors. I wonder if there's any film that they both did together.
Peter Travers is one of my more respected critics. I agree with him a lot. And Hoffman was one of the greatest things about this movie. I feel like it's been a little overlooked and terribly underrated. This film is a masterpiece in so many ways, and I still can't decide if I like Hoffman or Phoenix more in this film. They were both so powerful.
This movie was totally about scientology and Hubbard, right down to the cynical son and the "processing", the repetitive drills, the reincarnation, the ship scenes, the reference to Fair Winds etc, etc. Great movie.
It's a jumping off point for sure (he flat out just stole a lot of those questions in the interview scene from some of the actual things they ask people) but I wouldn't say the film's overall about just that
I really don't get why people think that the movie is about scientology. Scientology is the basis of the message of the movie, it could be scientology, it could be a political party or whatever, probably scientology was the best choice given that it makes the whole thing way more personal when it comes to the relationship between Dodd and Freddie. And also the movement doesn't responds to preconceived politcal ideas, which it makes the message of the movie less obvious and more comprehensive. Sorry, but this is my favourite movie without a doubt lol Can't stand seeing people think it's all about scientology :P
Miss seeing any new projects from P.S.H. . One of the greats of our generation. This kind of it makes me want to go back and watch "Almost Famous" again... That or any Paul Thomas Anderson collaboration... among many others.
Drug addiction is a disorder. It's not a choice. If one good thing comes from this tragic death, it'll be that more people start to recognize drug addiction for the lifelong struggle that it is.
Joaquin Phoenix and P.S.H. are two of the greatest! To see them act together is a privilege difficult to appreciate as much as one should. Generally, we appreciate actors more when we know that we won't get to see them ply their craft again for a variety of reasons.....the most final being death (as in P.S.H.'s case). Yet, if you isolate J.Phoenix's performance, you find something quite amazing.
RIP PSH. You were one of the best actors at that time in Hollywood. Damn drugs had to take another talented actor that could convey the feelings many American men cannot express...
Phillip Seymour Hoffman was a brilliant actor - one of my personal favourites. Such a gigantic shame he's no longer with us. Yet another succumbs to addiction and overdose. I'm not going to bang on that 'drugs are bad' cos I know addiction and abuse happen due to the taboo topic that's often off limits - ppl enjoy taking them - they're very enjoyable - but - unfortunately ppl get greedy and start craving 'a bigger, better high' - thus increasing the risk of overdose. It's not drugs that are the problem - it's ppl being reckless while taking them imo. Thus we lost Phillip Seymour Hoffman. A really big loss and a crying shame. RIP PSH. Rx
God speed Mr Hoffman. From Happiness, Love Lisa, to Charlie Wilson’s war, Capote, Doubt, and his later master classes in acting from Synecdoche New York, The Master, and A Most Wanted Man.....we miss you.
I respect PSH a lot but his whole thing about him not portraying L. Ron Hubbard strikes me as a bit cute/disingenuous. I just don’t believe him, the character IS L. Ron Hubbard as far as I’m concerned. I suspect they were treading carefully about stating the obvious because they didn’t want to piss the church off even more than they already were.
the take away message of his death for youth should be if you do hard drugs you're playing with death every time no matter how smart you are because this guy was a genius and clearly was not immune to the danger
that's only because your expectations were wrong. i went into this film with an open mind after hearing a lot of negative things about it, and i loved it. If you use your brain and actually try to understand the film, you'll find it much more intellectually stimulating
I was raised from a small child in the "Sea Org", and the idea of not blinking isn't from "Paul's imagination", unless Paul is slang for L.R.H. The "not blinking" thing is from TRs in Scientology, a course where you learn to confront any situation, if you blink it's a sign that you were effected and thus you have failed, then your supervisor tells you "flunk", meaning you flunked and you need to start from the beginning. That is why you meet Scientologists that can stare into your soul like some creepy superpower only they possess. The fact is they chose this actor because he looks like Ron, moves like Ron and is perfect for the role of Ron. They are just shitting their pants when it comes to the Scientology legal department, so they deny, deny, deny.
If I were contractually obligated to submit myself to interview after interview with insufferable nitwits like Peter Travers every time one of my films came out, I could see myself overdosing on heroin, too. RIP, Phil. He can't hurt you anymore . . .
I love how he skirts the issue that the film isn’t loosely based on Scientology. My brother was in that cult for 30 years as a leader. I know so much about it. He was diabolical. The cult was diabolical, and this film is completely based and so close to that subject, it’s funny to try to run from it.
silver linings was also a great film. One of the best comedy movies of the last years. And he just said, that the master was dissapointing for him. It's his opinion and opinions are like assholes everybody has one. Don't argue over opinions because that is stupid. UA-cam really don't need more people like you.
The dead seriousness that he plays many of his roles through lends to the humor that happens when that's alleviated. Sucks the blackness got him, though. I think he mb needed somebody to have reached out to that original wound that propelled him into never-stopping at improving himself. That compulsion that pushed him beyond talent into artistry and pathway-paving. I wonder if anything had changed in time, if he would still be alive. But he also sorta is still and for at least decades very much alive -- in his worldly work, that is.
Chris Coppola look at his last interviews from January's Sundance Festival, he's scratching and twitching, his sentences are all broken up and he's just saying whatever
well all the evidence says he was a user for sure. But I just don't he had a needle in his Arm. the media jerks like to say that stuff to just stir shit up.
Well I bow to your expertise! I was just trying to make the point that the media are so untrustworthy I would not have been surprised if they lied about a needle being in his arm just to stir it up. Remember When Marylyn Munroe was found all they wrote was she was naked nothing else. I haven't bought a newspaper in years so I'm out of touch But he T.V are not much better. But I suppose I like to know if its going to rain mind you I do know the answer to that cause I live in Ireland.
Even though I am a huge Tarantino and Christoph Waltz fan, I always felt like he should've won the oscar for best supporting actor last year. R.I.P
Who gives af.
Rest In Peace, one of the best performances of all time
A sad day. RIP to one of the acting greats
You are one of my favourite actors and I will always remember you that way. R.I.P. my friend.
whats ur top 5 PSH performances ?
PSH?
I watched a interview with Philip Seymour Hoffman read ur comment.

5) His character in "Twister"
Coady Entertainment Good choices I love that everybody has a different top 5 who else has so many great performance ?
such a loss...one of the true talents in hollywood and theater. poor talented bastard.
totally agree ,
Philip Seymour Hoffman seemed like such a genuine soul. So authentic, yet brilliant. His passing is a tragedy.
Synecdoche, New York message is even more potent because of his passing.
Video Invader I know right? What a beautiful film.
such an incredible, varied, talented actor and smart person. he left a body of work to be truly proud of. RIP

XDDDDD

Magnolia.

Wow. He was so talented. Why??? I loved him in Capote.

not totally..... but sure on the surface, it is about scientology.... but deeper subliminal things too

Hoffman is amazing, he is such an under-rated actor.
He did remind me of Orson Welles. Haunting film and great performances.
