  • Edmonton ranks favourably when it comes to rent affordability according to one website. Are the lower expenses enough to bring people over from other areas with higher rates?

It's affordable now because the oil projects have been greatly reduced. I was in Edmonton back around 2015 and the people that lived there were telling me stories about rent being nearly double what it was in Toronto and people wouldn't even work as a cashier at Tim Horton's for less than $20 to $25 an hour. Friends also went out there to work in the oil fields and couldn't even find places to rent because demand was so high. It is all trade offs. If oil production starts back up the same as it was years ago then rent and housing will be the same as Toronto or Vancouver. However if oil doesn't pick up then rent and housing stays low but the employment opportunities are not the same. It is all basic economics and supply and demand.
It would be similar to saying "just go move out to Nova Scotia or New Brunswick"....you can buy a house cheaper there then Edmonton or Toronto. You can buy a 4 bedroom home there for less than what people in Edmonton or Toronto are paying for an SUV but there are far less services, job opportunities, entertainment etc (I know some of that is argumentative based on what you see as "entertainment" or some people prefer the smaller population or better scenery etc but all that is factored into the price of housing)

also oil projects are hundreds of miles away from the city 😂 their activity has nothing to do with the cost of rent here. go back to school son
