The driving analogy is good. I liken it to speech. What do you think about when you're talking? It's basically the same question, and it has the same answer: not much. In both cases (as with driving, too), I'm letting my muscle memory recall my knowledge and practice of language/music and my experience with it, and I have an idea I want to express, so I'm navigating that muscle memory to produce an expression of that idea through my vocal chords or my writing or playing my instrument. Thanks for introducing me to the term "free-floating attention", that describes it perfectly.
I play what I hear In the moment BUT It also has to be strongly Burned In my memory as part of my natural vocabulary . I repeat stuff. BUT I am taking a lesson from you sir soon and help me THINK more stuff.
I think about how much I hate those neutered headstocks on otherwise awesome Suhr guitars. No, seriously, these are sweet videos that get right to it and have excellent things to say in compact, concise ways-- sort of like alot of great phrases and solos.
You have to be aware of what's going on around you. Say the bass does play a wrong note, say its flat of where it should be, it could be pretty cool to just go flat for a moment and then wrangle it back to where he has resolved. You never know, could create an unintended twist that just works. But if you're rigid to the arrangement or progression, itll never happen.
All I think about when I’m soloing are Marbin videos
The only shrink I will ever need!
