Durability?! Rustoluem Countertop Coating Test Shows How durable It Is | My Personal Review

- In this video, I ran some tests on the Rustoleum countertop coating to test the durability. I used this coating on one of our rental properties and decided to try some not so very scientific tests to see how it holds up to different types of damage.

So basically if you do take care of the counters this would be a cheap and effective quick fix. Just remember to use cutting boards and pot holders! It's nice that it doesn't stain though.
yes if you are carefull its a quick effective fix
I have "green" linoleum counter tops (ugg), looking for an inexpensive way to update. After watching your "honest" tests and weighing the cost of replacing counter tops I think I'll go with replacement. By the time I get the product, safety gear, application gear and the inconvenience of have the odor lingering for a few days it's not worth the savings for us. I really do appreciate your first video on your rental then this video on durability test. You answered questions I didn't even know I should've asked. Thank you for sharing.
Im Glad, it helped! It wasn't the most scientific of tests but I had my questions too and since I haven't seen the rental unit in a few months I wanted to try something until I can get back and take a look at the kitchen in the video. I think for us it was a good fit because we had a small budget and a timeline to get it done but Its more of a temporary thing I would have changed them too if it was possible.
I've got a kitchenette in my basement that has terrible old laminate on it. It doesn't get used for much at all, just coffee maker and microwave for guests, so I think this would be a great option instead of ripping up the entire thing! Thanks so much for doing this!
Yeah i think for light use areas this would work great !
Add a couple coats polyurethane on top and it will do great.
make sure to ventilate. the odor is strong.
Thanks for the thorough video. I imagine that if 1 or 2 coats of sealant was put over the paint, it would of held up better during your test.
yes i agree. Going to try soon and compare thanks for watching!
I'd like to see you do a quick sanding and then put another coat to see how well it would be "fixed" if one of these things were accidentally done to the countertop.
Its coming! I didnt think there would be this much interes so i almost threw away the test piece but i have it in my garage now and im going to try and fix it
@@BryanBuilt Awesome! I'm also very interested in that :)
Omg this is the video I’ve needed and could never find 🤩❤️ all my questions have been answered
Thank you for watching !
Great and very informative better than most of the jack aszs reviewing the same product . Loved your tests . Now I know what my money will buy . Thanks .
Glad it was helpful!
I use a cutting board to chop. Never do I put hot pots on the counter and I wipe up sauce right away.
Thats good. But sometimes it happens . Especially with kids and teens lol
I am about to do this technique and I am using a bonding primer first. I think it would give the countertop paint something to grab onto. When done I am going to put an acrylic coat on.
nice! let me know how it turns out for you
Right on time. I was just about to purchase this. Thank you so much.
Love your diy videos. I want to paint our countertops & watched your first video so ty so much for the update! :)
Thank you for watching!
Good to know. It would probably do great on the walls behind the counter, stove and sink, to make them easy to clean. A painted backsplash. The area around my sink is wood painted with regular interior wall paint and doesn't stand up to scrubbing. This probably would.
Great idea! it probably would do well in that scenario
now you should sand it and re paint and show us how to fix..
Good idea!
I second this! I want to do this for my rental and if sanding it and repainting it works, then that would be great!
This is a great test, hopefully people wouldn’t do this to my rental property, but I understand it does happen. Do they sell a protective coat that could protect it more?
Super helpful, I have been looking to refresh my kitchen countertop and was wondering how it would hold up
Glad it was helpful!
I think maybe a few extra coats and maybe some laquer would increase the durability. I guess at that point it would be less work to just put on some new laminate.
This would be great for bathroom counters.
Yes i think it would !
Thank you for doing this video.. It has answered all the questions I had... Am glad that you also get to the and stick with the facts.... Very informative video...
Glad it was helpful!
I painted my countertop two years ago and it’s still in good condition but I put a primer and a sealant on it And trust me my husband is rough on the counter but you also need to let it cure for about 14 days before you put anything heavy on it you can do light work on it. And the reason we did this because it was more affordable than getting a new countertop.
@@sonyahanson4819 hi which products did you use?
excellent job. Good follow up from your other video about a year ago. Thanks.
stains aside the only thing that is remotely possible would be dropping a bowl or plate and chipping the paint. otherwise we would use a cutting board. i kinda like this stuff.
Yeah for sure i went a little overboard for the sake of testing lol i dnt think anyones going to sledgehammer their countertops.
I’ve been curious about the product,Thanks for the Demo. It’s not looking like a good solution for my rental It might end looking worse, renters can be brutal.
Yeah i think we got lucky with great tenants but i ll update tou guys when i get a chance!
Man wish I had someone like you here in Vegas thanks for the Videos
Glad you like them and thank you for watching!
Thank you for this video. I was thinking of using the countertop paint to do my counters Now I know better . You're a savior
Great tests. How many coats do they recommend in the instructions on the can? I expected better results from Rustoluem product. Thanks for sharing.
To be fair these were some pretty harsh tests i dont think anyone will take a mini sledge to their counters lol but i do think it could be a bit tougher. I think it says “multiple coats may be needed” i would do 3 minimum
Thanks for the testing very informative!
Glad it was helpful!
Maybe a clear coat???
going to try
Thank you for this! And for the other video!
Great testing. Thanks. If you want to do another stain test some time you may want to use grape juice. I think that will stain anything. Did you do your own painting of your countertops? If so, they sure look nice.
Also if you want it to last longer just put a couple coats polyurethane on it.
Thank you!! I was going to paint my mothers laminate in her kitchen and she'd have a fit if it didn't hold up. So I'm definitely not sold!
Glad I could help!
Thanks! I always wondered about this product.
Glad it was helpful! Going to try a few more tests on it soon
Wow…. Glad to see the results..Ty
Welcome!
Hi, new to your channel. This was a helpful "update" video. Solidifies the idea that if you take care of the countertop, it will last a bit longer. Txs
Thank you for watching and commenting i appreciate it !
I did two coats of paint, then waited a few days & did 2 coats of polyurethane.
Thats great! How does it look?
@@BryanBuilt only been a month so far & looks great. I'm being very careful though.
Thanx Bryan. Just subscribed. Greetings from Cape Town, South Africa. 💐👏
Thank you! That is awesome hello cape Town!
Hi, Bryan. First, thanks for your videos! I have watched your original video several times in an effort to work up the courage to use this product on my old 50s-era gold-flecked laminate countertops. I'm glad I found and watched this one, but even after seeing the results, I'm still thinking about the coating. Do you think the results would be different if you used a sealant -- or would a sealant run the risk of yellowing the paint? (I want to go for white paint, too.) Final thought: You handle that knife like a PRO!
Thank you for watching I Appreciate it! I made a 3rd video where i put a polyurethane coat on a sample piece did turn it yellow . I haven't tried any other clear coatings but maybe a clear epoxy would work. 😂 thank you i try!
Thanks, @@BryanBuilt! Going to find that video right now. I'll investigate the possibility of a clear epoxy. 🙂
Love the testing part 👍👍
Glad you liked it!
I've seen people use the appliance epoxy of countertops wonder how that would do
Hmm interesting i would like to see that too !
@@BryanBuilt I would be interested to see the same test on appliance epoxy and a comparison:)
I’m curious if it would hold up any better if left to cure for longer. I’ve heard that paint can take up to 30 days to fully cure.
Great information thank you. I wonder if a coat of resin over it would make it more durable!
I sold laminate, solid surface countertops. All the things you tested the epoxy painted countertops with is forbidden by every laminate manufacturer if you used your unpainted laminate countertops that way you would void any warranty. You're not supposed to put hot pans on any type countertop without a trivet. I advice property managers to put it in rental or lease agreements. So I bet the paint would hold up if you used it normally.
I do have to say those thing's damage even a new laminate countertop.
Very true but this seemed a little too easy the coating was chipping alot more then i expected
I would roll coat urethane as a protectant, but that presents the question does the undercoat matter if the top coat is the protective layer.
I would love to see how that touches up from damages
It would probably hold up better to the banging, chopping and even the burns if it had a clear epoxy cover coat on it.
yeah alot of people have suggested that. I dont think rustoleum recommends it but i might give it a try just to see
Great tests. So its just normal paint. Try rustoleum 7786502 with a Flood product Penetrol. Cant be any worse than chipping paint in food.
Thanks for the honest review
Any time!
I notice that you did not use a top coat of any kind...is there a reason for that. Maybe a protective coat will help.
I dnt think the manufacturer recomends one on the instructions. I tried a poly on another video butbit yellowed
Even granite would get mess up from repeated hits with a mini sledge and skillet.
Yeah i get that. I was just trying to simulate alot of wear and tear in a short amount of time
Can one put a durable clear coat (epoxy) over the Rust-O-Leum to toughen up the countertop and prevent paint chipping?
not sure if the manufacturer recommends but im going to try it soon
Was thinking of doing this, but don't think we can not use our counters for the 3 or 4 days.
Yeah it takes a bit to dry and for the smell to go away
i'm thinking of doing this in the main bathroom of our next house. i think it should be okay, but if you have suggestions, i'd love to hear them.
sand it well and do more then 2 coats . Alot of people have said they have used a clearcoat over it but i havent actually tried myself.
So how would a marble countertop fair with sledgehammer and pots and pans on it... or a hot pot
Not great i would assume but i said in the video im sure nobody is taking a sledge hammer to their counters . i wash just trying to simulate months of wera and tear in a few mintues. Not a perfect test but 🤷🏽♂️
oh bugga.. i saw your first video so went and purchased this paint.. now i find this video.. damn... Do you know if you can use this paint on tiles
Not sure but it is an epoxy so i would think it would stick with a little prep
How did you get it tinted white? I thought you could only pick the colors on the can? And white isn’t a option?
I just used straight from the can i didnt tint it all this is just the base color
Could you do this same test for the Rustoleum appliance epoxy? I’ve seen people recommend that over the countertop paint
She is going to kill you when she sees the bottom of that pan lol. This was a great test. Just be carefule with hot pots and dong go banging and cutting on the counter top
great review......thanks
Thanks for watching
Great video how do you fix the scratches of the knife 🔪? I have scratches in my restroom vanity ,looks like it have been repainted before white ..help i dont wanna paint the whole vanity. can i use somethng else to do touch up on the scratches only?
Couldn't have used a dark dividing strip?
Other than the spills, wouldn't heat or cutting damage the countertop(painted or original)?
yea most likely . I think I mentioned on this video that most of these things we normally wouldnt do to our countertops. but you never know with kids lol
For stains I would have used blueberries or blackberries.
Why not use epoxy appliance paint
this is an epxy as well . I havent tried the appliance epoxy
Does the rust oleum counter paint not have a “full” cure time longer than three days? Like with paint, it is technically dry after so many hours but usually says on each can to allow anywhere from a week to 14 days for a “full cure” before exposing it to any harsh elements. I’ve never used it so I wasn’t sure if it’s the same or not. Thanks! 😊
Ok, I texture painted my countertops w random paint found. Water based solid brown on the bottom, dabbed water based grey, then dabbed high gloss trim white. It probably had a lot to do with the trim white but it held up much better than this with knives and hot pans. I will not be purchasing this. Thank you.
thanks for watching !
You should have put 5 coats on
I don’t think that’s a fair assessment, since you’d just painted it on in front of camera. It needs to fully cure, before it’s tested. Right?
I let it dry like 3-4 days before testing . But someone mentioned that it takes 30 days to fully cure so i may re test it
Most people use cutting boards & pot holders.
Do a red chili sauce on that
good idea
Was the clear coat protectant/sealer used after the two coats?
That was very scientific! 😂
A little disappointing. Good at least that tomato sauce did nothing. Heavy use may require repainting or replacement after a certain point. I used on a kitchen counter and it chipped very easily, it did not work for me as everything dinged it, everything.
yes i felt the same way. I did go a little crazy on the testing lol but i wanted to simulate alot of wear and tear in a short time.
Should try koolaid, it might stain it! Thanks forthe update
you mean poor mans dye. :p Jk,
@D.S. Lol 😂
Thanks for the idea!
😂
Show it counter top old one
Even Formica would be damaged with that kind of treatment on a long hold. 🤷🏻♀
True. Im not a scientist 😬🤷🏽♂️ i was just trying to simulate alot of wear and tear in a bit of time 😂. Thanks gor watching
$ 60 dollars in paint - $ $ 190’for a new Counter at Home Depot and it will looks better. !!!!! You get what you pay for. !!!!
I don't care what paint it used all paints wouldn't pass that test. Paint it and treat the accordingly No hot pans on counter top. No slicing on counter top etc
cure time is terrible...who can NOT use their counters for that long?
yea its pretty long
It's garbage. I had it in a rental and it doesn't take much to scratch or chip it.
Now do it to your own countertops
I Did... I own the house I painted them in. I wont do it again but hey you live and you learn . Thanks for watching!
That's a fail.
Is pain…. lol I don’t need a video to show will peal off with heat 🤦♂️
Look at that finish looks so trash even the orange peel texture
No. Just no.
thanks for watching!
Well that stinks....hugs
