Jomboy gonna get a job offer from the Astros with how good he did at figuring out those signs
As a Yankee fan, I’m pretty sure he’ll piss all over that contract offer like Lou Brown peed over Dorn’s demands.

How the hell did he think Yaz had the signs when the Cardinals couldn’t get their own signs together…absolute joke
No clue. Props to Yaz though, he played with the pitcher's paranoia perfectly
This felt like the longest breakdown Jomboy has ever done.
amir taking on the pirates was longer
Yeah the Amir one was 8 minutes long
This was MEGA inside baseball.

the harper strickland one was i think 6 minutes but i could be wrong
When the pitcher yells, "shut the fuck up," Thats when you give him a wink and blow him a kiss. Dude would've been shook the rest of the game.
Underrated comment ^^^^
Exactly!!
I see you know how to REALLY piss people off lol
That's what I did to people that gave me the bird when I was driving for a living...always got great reactions..:)
he cannot wink, only blink , but ten dollars cheaper
I learned so much more about baseball in 8 minutes than I have my entire life. Next time I go to a game, I'll definitely keep this all in mind.
There are so many things going on with almost every single pitch - especially with runners on base. I hate that most people can’t see that, once you start noticing all the small things is when baseball gets entertaining. If ya blink ya might miss it
Make sure you get center field seats 😃
Sorry, long long long reply to this comment, but if you avid fan of the sport how you not understand every pitch is like a chess moves. I'm English played cricket, it the same in that sport each ball is chess move, to try out wit the batsman for an easier out
Watching baseball from young, ofc there's a reason for all the calling of pitches, the shaking off, nodding, signals etc - just confused why it was such a revelation when you say 'entire life' - no agro tho ❤
@@hiimmatt94 That's because I'm not a sports fan lol. I always figured there was SOME sort of method to their madness, but wasn't sure what it was.
Ump needs to just call a ball in this situation. Throw a freaking pitch.
You got your wish. Hope you enjoy more pissed off pitchers and batters.
@@balbarith45 Seriously. We're going to need a "restoration" of baseball one of these days, back to what it used to be, when players played for the love of the game and the fans watched because it was the pastime. It might even be happening right now in people's back yards: I'm enjoying watching MLW Wiffle Ball more than MLB nowadays.
MLB added a pitching timer this year for this exact reason lol
Yep, can't do that anymore... you got 20 seconds or it's a ball... Batter has to get their butt ready as well. Watching Ortiz for years re-strap the 500 pieces of velcro he had drove me nuts. I don't care how good he was, it was infuriating to watch.
I love that both players admitted to this instead of just playing ignorant so we know 100% this is what was going on and not just speculating
I have no idea why this doesn't happen more often. If I'm the runner on 2nd, I'm making all sorts of overt (but bullshit) signs to the batter just to get into the pitchers head.
@@justinskywalker Because it's bad sportsmanship and a lot of these players are friends and respect one another. If not that, they respect the game enough to not act like a clown on the field.

Goddamn seeing how long he was taking on his pitches I would assume this is the 9th inning with the the bases loaded, but then you find out it's the second inning and the pitcher is already balls deep in 47 pitches, like damn dude relax and just pitch.
Yep. About halfway through this vid I looked at the inning and was surprised it was second inning with two outs!
I’m a cardinals fan he’s super young and we shouldn’t have brought him up yet he needs more time to develop but our whole management side and upper people are ass

As a college catcher, I would have a code change with sliding my glove in the dirt or placing my hand on my chest protector like I am adjusting it. Maybe toss a pebble or some dirt down first or 3rd base line. Lots of things, but never thought of using "out plus one" or "out number" as the indicator. That is awesome. Wish I would have thought of that one.
I used to get my auld fella out and signal with that.
@@BigRamifications you don't sound overly yank!
I actually was one of the first coaches to implement the out plus one awhile back now just came to me at dinner one night next thing I know buncha fuckin teams using it man should’ve patented it I guess lol
@Nick Paul Sometimes I think all of this just gets in the pitcher's head and instead of getting in a rhythm, he is over-thinking -- literally the worst thing a pitcher should be doing. Just have the catcher giving signs with an initiate/indicator and confirmation sign... This is why sometimes three football coaches will give offensive/defensive calls (not so much in the NFL because each team has one player on the field with an audio receiver.) Similar to how third-base coaches give signs.
Bumping the pitch could also be hard to decipher: 2 fastball, 3 offspead, 4 other fastball/slider, 1 changeup/other special pitch. Just keep it easy for a pitcher to stay in rhythm.
@nickpaul241 no i came up with it a couple years ago at longhorn steakhouse after i took my little league team there, their parents mustve told the MLB
48 pitches in the first 2 innings! Definitely a good time for Yaz to get in his head.
Man can’t bat nore than 220
My catcher in high school always wanted to throw the same pitch as the previous pitch if it was a strike. Really great guy to hang with but he was not the sharpest billard ball in the rack.

"Sharpest billiard ball"?
Lol I’m a catcher too. Guess that’s why he didn’t make it past hs? Lol

In the noog
@@cathyv3424 well yeah, most pitchers are able to shake off stuff btwn innings or even btwn batters. How else could you give up a HR and still go out and pitch a good inning later, which we see all the time. Yaz was messing him up in that at-bat, and with 2 outs and him being in scoring position, anything that might let wilmer get a mistake pitch to drive is important.
I remember a clip of Jake Peavy pitching for the Giants a few years ago. He was a veteran at the end of his career, known for being "intense" on the mound, and his catcher was an emergency rookie callup (at least one of the regulars was injured, maybe both).
He got so exasperated with the rookie not calling the right pitch that finally he just yelled it to him.
I recall that, prior to Buster Posey, the Giants had a game where BOTH of their catchers had to come out of the game due to injury, so Pedro Feliz, normally at third or moved to left when Bonds wasn't playing, strapped on the gear and caught a few innings. Supposedly Pedro had some experience as a kid behind the plate, so he wasn't completely lost.

Not only within a game but also all the storylines that get created throughout the season. There's just so many details to keep in mind. It's really fun once you get a grasp of your own team, but when you look at the whole league it's a huge soap opera. We went from Dodgers vs. Padres to so much more. Giants, Astros, Red Sox, Mets, Phillies, Brewers. How Atlanta and Cardinals were supposed to win their divisions. Cubs and Nats sold their championship team. Shohei, Vladdy Jr, Tatis Jr, Bauer, Miggy so on and so on. Enjoy the season guys, i know i will from my own little corner
@@jerrygomez3825 poetically said dear fellow
Yastrzemski was looking sharply to his left for breaking balls.
Absolutely correct we’ll said
Best part of this breakdown is how relevant it will always be to the game. You could pull a clip from 1980 or rewatch this in 2040 and it'll still apply.
Well, not so much now with the electronic signs.
Jomboy figuring out the signs in the breakdown was way more entertaining then watching the pitcher and catcher not get any of their sighs correct and understanding their sequence.
My team used a cool sign method. Catcher lays first sign and then you add 1 for every sign he shows after that. Say I throw 3 pitches: 1 = fastball, 2 = curve, 3 = change. Catcher flashes 2, 2, 2. The pitch is fastball. Start at 2, then there are 2 more signs shown. So go from 2 to 3 and start back over at 1. So simple, but so hard to crack.
I could envision some pitchers having a hard time with this one. "Let's see, that was 2+3+1+4. That's uh, 10, divide by 3, that leaves a remainder of 1....wait, why are you calling time?"
Ummm ok
Maybe I’m just an idiot but that made no sense
How tf is 2 2 2 fastball im lost lmao
Damn the catcher would have to be very speedy at math for that, not only does he have to know which pitch he wants to land on, he also has to come up with the amount of signs he has to show the pitcher so the pitcher can figure that out, on the fly after every pitch, damn
Catcher: ok I want him to throw a curve ball, I’ll show 4 signs, and he has to land on 2, which means I need to start on, ummm, hm, let’s see here, if I start on 1, thats 2,3,1, ok that’s not it, that means I need to start 2, ok so my sequence will be 2,3,1,1. Let’s hope to god he throws this curve ball
That’s one pitch lmao
Yastrzemski is known to be pretty good at deciphering signs on second. Pitchers really don't like when he's on second.
Thanks. That answers two of the questions that I posted above.
Sounds like hes good at bluffing
@@adventuresoulz Might be, but it’s pretty smart to do that too. Clearly it gets in the pitcher’s head.

I was a catcher for a while in the eighties and was a batting practice pitcher. We couldn't use cheat sheets we had to keep it in our heads. Pitcher or catcher you have to know the pitch so you don't lose it.
As a catcher you use glove motions to correct the pitcher. Pull catches to fool the umpire. You basically can control the field if you do it right.

Still relevant today.
When I’m tired but can’t sleep I go through the list a Super Bowls in my head. I probably would have done that if I were at this game waiting for the next pitch.
There is a certain weird logic to it. I remember that because I remember that first the Broncos needed to get redemption for what happened against the Seahawks. Then the Seahawks needed their punishment.

When I played in college we did “follow the 1 mod 5” which was after the 1, you add up the next numbers until you get 5, and then the next number is the pitch. It was so complicated we had many cross ups, and pitchers doing math on the mound instead of focusing on pitching, so I think it did way more harm than good. Glad I was a position player because I’m not sure I could have done mental math on the mound haha.

@@radtech21 yes sir
These are great! Love the funny analysis
At the younger levels the signs between the catcher and pitcher are usually straight forward and simple. 1 for Fastball, 2 for Breaking Ball, 3 for changeup. If/when a runner reaches 2nd, they might mix it up by in going on the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th sign. Or they might have an indicator like whatever gets flashed after the catcher puts down a certain number number of fingers. Or they might even change it to the catcher touching certain spots on his gear, while whatever the catcher flashes mean absolutely nothing.. Sometimes the signs might be coming from the dugout, an whatever the catcher does is a decoy. Baseball offers opportunities for guys to get real creative with signage. At the college and professional levels pitchers usually have a lot more control over where they are trying to throw the ball. They, at least, have a better idea of where they want/need to throw their pitches. This brings in another level of signs between the catcher and pitcher. There will be one sign for the pitch type, and one sign for the location, or zone, of the pitch. As you can probably imagine, things start to get complicated. If/when a runner is on 2nd, things can get really complicated to the point of easily confusing. Hence the cheat sheets. Baseball is boring to the average onlooker who doesn't know what they're looking at, but if you understand basic baseball, you know that baseball is situation dependent, and the situation of the game changes from pitch to pitch.
This does not change the fact that in Australia there are 48 million kangaroos and in Uruguay there are 3,457,380 inhabitants. So if the kangaroos decide to invade Uruguay, each Uruguayan will have to fight 14 kangaroos.
