    Saying "I think" is actually sorta genius in that moment, if he came out and said "HEY hey never touched home plate" the ump would've gotten defensive and this clip would be in a "umps having thin skin and ejecting ppl compilation" video

      I’m not sure that he would’ve been thrown out. I think it was more an attempt to avoid suspicion if they did indeed take that mound visit to review the play, then plan to appeal in order to review. Pretty genius, must say.

    • @WalterLiddy
      @WalterLiddy 3 роки тому +48

      It's not likely because they didn't want to appear aggressive (certainty is a stronger position to take when you can). It's that they didn't want to draw attention to how long it had been since the play occurred, that they'd have been able to view the replay. At least, that's what Jomboy is suggesting here.

    • @CSLFiero

      no challenge could have been issued without something to legally challenge. It would have taken a galaxy brained ump to realize that by accepting his appeal he was reopening the time window for a challenge.

      They actually had to go about it this way; Pena never tagged the runner or the plate, so they had to tag the base before the next pitch in order to have an appeal to challenge. The 20s in order to challenge started on the appeal. The mound visit did not constitute a new play.

      More specifically, missing home plate has it's own rule: 5.09(b)(12)

      Without their own microphones, ballpark shots of groups of fans make for a wonderful return to silent-movie-comedy. Jomboy should narrate some of those, he has a real knack for reading people. I love how developed of an act these two already are. The best bit is when Brewer mocks White Sock by mimicking his sunflower-seed fist-toss & then folds his own arms to contrast w/ the safe-call being made directly across the front of his own chest. I disagree that it's a loophole. The challenged play is not the runner failing to touch Home. The challenge is the appeal, which the umpire missed for a completely fair reason. Replay was implemented in large part to help get correct plays that umpires cannot get correct in real time because of unpredictable demands placed on them. The missed call was the appeal play. Replay got it right. It's not a "bug" in the rules. It's a feature.

      Yeah that get compensated well to play a game, doesn't mean they are perfect. Holding anyone to that high of a standard just makes more stress for ones self than anything.

    Somebody on the Milwaukee team probably has a law degree. The Brewers figured out that it was too late to challenge the safe call. So they opted to challenge the "appeal denied" call. Great job finding that loophole!

      It's challenging touching a base. But there is nothing to challenge until after the appeal is denied, as that requires an appeal before the challenge.

      A runner who passes a bag untouched is deemed to have touched the bag unless appealed. Therefore the umpire always calls the runner who missed a bag safe and waits for the appeal. This is seen mostly for plays at 1B and the plate.
