@willdiesel8431 The Lead Developer of Sf1 went on to produce the SNK Games. It's clear from the SNK Games that Takashi Nishimaya wanted to expand on the storytelling aspect of those games, not realising the 2 Player feature would be the definitive selling point of all fighting games.

I thought it was super lame that him and Ken had such bit parts in the movie, but I was eating up the Van Damme stuff from the 90s anyway. So it was fine. But I'd argue that Ryu and especially Ken were more for the Western audience who were fetishizing all that martial arts stuff pretty hard. Guile was just another one of those weird amalgamations of stereotypes where you figured that's how Asians saw americans. We were all muscular and we were all soldiers and had big American flag tattoos. I just figured the way that they told the stories in the cartoon and with the toys and stuff it was more clean cut to have the soldier leading the charge against bison and his forces . The Street Fighter 2 movie was rad AF. Thanks for getting us all talking about it🎉
Guile is iconic, without a doubt. He's not a soldier though (that's the US Army). He's an Airman (since he's a fighter pilot and officer in the US Air Force). It's small but important distinction in the US military. If you call a US Marine a "soldier", you're definitely going to get an earful.
Wow and I thought snobbery and elitism was bad enough in the UK. I'd happily argue with a person like that haha! Talk about a complex! An Air Force pilot is considered a type of soldier, though they serve in a specialized role within the military. While the term "soldier" is typically associated with members of the Army, it can also be used more broadly to describe anyone serving in the armed forces. Air Force pilots are officers or enlisted personnel in the Air Force, and like soldiers in other branches, they undergo rigorous training, follow military protocols, and participate in defense operations. In short, an Air Force pilot is a military service member, but their role is more specific to aviation and air-based missions. A Soldier is a soldier!
Ironic Capcom came up with charge inputs to be easier for beginners but in reality it turned out harder, and less intuitive, than motion inputs. Just like Modern controls in SF6 turned out to be more convoluted, obtuse, and harder to use than just learning to play the game proper as well.
Getting a bit geeky, I think that, in the original games at least, Guile had some of the most effective non-special moves in the game. E.g. his double leg sweep, his uppercut and that medium kick where he flips upside. This meant when mastered, you didn't need to overly rely on his special moves.
There is one commandment for Guile. "In any game, thou shall always have two special moves, no more, no less, just two!" "For compensation you can have 3 supers later"😅😁
the qhole context of this video really only makes sense if you didnt grow up playing the games and watching the media as it came out. im also not trying to invalidate the points. I think things were such a mess when they came out the only sense that could be made of the entire thing is in retrospect. i also think that many of us didnt care too much about the actual movie and generally wanted more from it.
Guile Is my favorite fighter, since I was a little kid and I first played Street Fighter 2, he will always be my favorite fighter so to me he is the main character.
You forgot to mention Guile's first crossover appearance as a statue on Rugal's collection of defeated oponents in The King of Fighters 94, the flagship game of Capcom's biggest rival in the 90's, SNK.
I remember that cartoon and the live-action movie and I even had the GI joes....... I love Street fighter but we also can't forget all the interesting USA Network action cartoons from that at same time. A couple of which The source material would have been way too adult for kids
Ryu is like Scorpion, he is the poster boy Street Fighter changes the main protagonist in each game In SF1 it was Ryu In SF2, the main protagonists are Guile and Chun-Li In SF3 Alex became the main protagonist.
In SF2 was Ryu and Ken. Didn't you watch the anime movie? Or the anime Street Fighter 2 Victory? Guile was only the protagonist in Hollywood and that lame cartoon adaptation for kids. To be honest every american adaptation of SF2 was terrible. At least the first Mortal Kombat movie was cool but Street Figther with Van Damme? That was trash man and you can ask anybody would say the same.
@betoboyblogs135 Lame? LAME?! No show with this line could possibly be lame! "I killed your father, so what? I killed my father, too, and you don't see me whining about it!" But yeah, the American cartoon wasn't great. Most around that time werent.
The SuperSF2 players hint book leaned very heavily into the "Guile was the best". However, I was NEVER able to make Guile work for me... holding a direction for two seconds before being able to release a single special move...it didn't work well for me...I wanted a character I could spam specials with, not just every two seconds.
In the Netflix anime Hi Score Girl, they imply that Guile could be seen as the main character of Street Fighter-since he's the favorite character of the main protagonist, Haruo Yaguchi, who even sees him as a mentor.
I love how in the Streetfighter II Animated Movie, Guile is knocked out without doing much but at the end he's like, "We got our revenge, Chun Li." Anyway, I like how Guile's current "whirlwhind" forearms look like Wamuu - another JoJo character than was basically a more awesome Polnareff before Polnareff.
Guile of course is not the main character. But he was super OP as a game character especially in SF2, secret moves etc, which contributes to his rising popurarity as well. I really like his buddy scenes with ChunLi in the SF2 movie as he really cares about her.
When I first came to the game I thought Guile was the main character simply because of the ease of his move set. No one can really do a shoryuken without grinding 😉 so to do a blade kick and a sonic boom fairly simply made him seem like an accessible character for all which made him THE character for me.
Guile was totally absent in Street Fighter III, core releases of Alpha series, & primary roster of Street Fighter V. And he got a rather dim treatment when it came to the theme track in Street Fighter IV.
Guile was my main in World Warrior, but that was because of the glitches; invisible throw, freeze, third stance, golden stance/untouchable. Loved doing that stuff with him, but the main character is definitely Ryu, from Street Fighter 1 and his counterpart Ken. This was a game ahead of it's time and looking back, I didn't know how good this game really was, to busy enjoying it!
Guile also had for a brief moment, some of the best medium combos in the game. But they were nerfed by Charlie's introduction and never heard from again
Personally, I've always thought of Guile and Chun-Li to be the dual protagonists of Street Fighter II; they're both the only characters (except T. Hawk and sorta Cammy - but they came later) specifically trying to take down Shadaloo and they both have personal beef with Bison himself. Also, we don't talk about Street Fighter V's story.
My cousin called him gully when we were kids. He got mad and demanded I supply a better name. Since I never saw the word before I said, "um... gwee-leh?" So we called him gully until seeing the van Damme movie
Thanks for the breakdown! I need some advice: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). How can I transfer them to Binance?
Believe it or not the main character back in the day was actually Ken. That’s why he gets the woman at the end. Also, Sagat’s scar across the chest was actually given to him by Ken not Ryu.
i actually always think guile is at least in second game he is main character because just look his ending i mean they made detail more than others (guile holding bison) also more sense to me.
It’s funny how M.Bison in the Japan is Balrog the boxer while M. Bison name in Japan is Vega and Vega name in Japan is Balrog. They change M. Bison in America because they didn’t want Mike Tyson to sue them.
I thought only gringos believed Guille was the main character. It was always clear it was Ryu and Ken, they are the first characters in the select screen, they are the ones that have a clear rivality, and Ryu was the defending champion, since he defeated Sagat on the previous tournament. I mean, hadouken was what every kid was trying to imitate, nobody understood what Guille was yelling.
It was the American marketing. Even as kids, we noticed the lineup started with Ryu, but when we had a cartoon and movie starring guile, that was taken as proof.
I never thought Ryu was the main protagonist. When you watch Street Fighter The Animated Movie, most of it was centred around Guile and Chun Li. Considering the franchise was made by the Japanese to appeal to a Western audience, it makes sense that the main hero is supposed to be the American Top Gun guy. Ryu is a journeyman and pretty much all the fighter's style on the roster were designed around countering his abilities, so it was unlikely that he was supposed to be the top guy. We see this even now, he's stuck right in mid tier with a plethora of characters ahead of him. Guile is still one of the strongest characters in Street Fighter 6 presently. I have a little feeling though that Ryu may receive some significant buffs in the future.
Weirdly, I swear I remember Guile saying "Moon Kick" whilst performing the flash kick. Yet I can find no reference to it. I think I've jumped timelines again 😂
When i first seen the promo art for SF2 before the game was released in the arcades i knew guile was gonna be my character and i was right. As soon as i got to play the arcade guile was my my favourite. I remember people saying back in the day guile players were feared as we could take out any character without any problems. The manga movie ruined the ending. Guile should have taken on bison and won.
4:07 I think they [ the people sitting in meetings about who to market to the west, and who western children would relate to and favor ! ] *Is it JUST ME ‽‽ IMO they were DEAD WRONG because Ryu and Ken were #1 & #2 ALL DAY LONG ! With Guile trailing behind at #3 pretty far back !!!* ★★★ 【 *ƘĘƝ MçŢĘŔ§ is THEE BEST, NO CONTEST !!* 】 ★★★
@@willdiesel8431 I agree. Sure Guile is an amazing character design, but he just doesn't resonate with me as strongly as other characters ! Guile may not be Ryu or Ken level, but he isn't Dhalsim level either. Somewhere in the middle of the pack or the end of the best / top line !
I always thought guile should have been played by Dolph Lundgren and DJ played by Billy Blanks in the movie. But they just wanted Van Damme because he was super popular at the time.
Each character is supposed to represent a different area/ fighting style, _which makes all of them the main character._ This allowed Capcom to do exactly what you're saying- each country and/or fighting style would have a "main character" that aligned with their preferred demographic. The _real_ main character is Blanka, tho' (as his character and style are both unique). 😁
Well 1st time I saw Street fighter I remember see Ken and Guile fight , his hair was cool and unique but I think I remember everyone now from the main guys, Ken , Ryu with their fireball and spin kick , E Honda , Chun Li , Dhalsim , Blanka , Dhalsim and E honda were cool with their hand techniques , Blanka scared me !!! Guile sonic boom and the now called flash kick ,there was no name for it then also remember as Street fighter went along they created stories , in the arcade no 1 cared about stories back then we just wanted to play the game , we invented our own names for moves example we called the flash kick "wind mill" Bison move where he stands on your head "tap dance". Over all we didn't care about names of moves or back story we just enjoyed the fun .
One thing I never understood is why the developers choose to make the sonic boom move different than the hadoken and Dhalsim’s fireballs which were easier to do on your controller, I always hated having to press back then forward plus a punch bottom to do the sonic boom
Street Fighter Main Characters Street Fighter - Ryu Street Fighter 2 - Guile Street Fighter 3 - Alex Street Fighter 4 - Abel Street Fighter 5 - Rashid Street Fighter 6 - Ken
As a kid, I would swear there was a “ . “ after the G in his name. So I would call him General Uile. All my friends thought I was crazy. I thought I’d be vindicated when the movie came out. So when it did and he was rightly named Guile, I was laughed at for weeks 😂😂😂
He's not the main trio or even the fourth rail but he's popular enough to get recognized. He's not exactly second tier in terms of ease of play and popularity.

The tank is Not "ridiculous", I still have mine. The choice to include the brown costume Guile instead of the green was ridiculous.
😄👍
Guile is iconic, without a doubt. He's not a soldier though (that's the US Army). He's an Airman (since he's a fighter pilot and officer in the US Air Force). It's small but important distinction in the US military. If you call a US Marine a "soldier", you're definitely going to get an earful.
Whoopdedoo
@@TopHatGamingManChannel I can't believe you even entertained that mess 🤣
They like their special pronouns in the military " I'm a marine not a soldier"
LMAO 🤣🤣🤣
Too bad Guile did not get a cameo appearance in the Wreck it Ralph CGI movies, that would have been epic.
Bet there's at least one from street fighter in that..or at least a facsimile of someone
@@patrickjorda5523 Was Zangief , Mortal Kombat's Kano got a facsimile
I always liked Guile's moveset from the beginning but it was easier for me to do Ryu's moves so that's why he became my favorite.
🤷♂️
To this day I still struggle with charge characters/moves sometimes the input just won't come out for me.
@@DragonWaffleX same
Ironic Capcom came up with charge inputs to be easier for beginners but in reality it turned out harder, and less intuitive, than motion inputs.
"In any game, thou shall always have two special moves, no more, no less, just two!"
"For compensation you can have 3 supers later"😅😁
He has 3 now lol. The new one is called Sonic Blade
Remember when guile's theme went with everything and was once the US natl anthem?
Should def get john cena to play guile live action
nah should have arnie...
in his prime. oh well.
van damme ruined it. he should been ryu. bloodsport the goat.
the qhole context of this video really only makes sense if you didnt grow up playing the games and watching the media as it came out. im also not trying to invalidate the points.
If he wasn't playable, why should it be mentioned?
@@willdiesel8431it's a viable Easter Egg that they recognize Guile instead of Ryu
7:47 Rare footage of Guile going home and becoming a family man.
I remember that cartoon and the live-action movie and I even had the GI joes....... I love Street fighter but we also can't forget all the interesting USA Network action cartoons from that at same time. A couple of which The source material would have been way too adult for kids
"Interesting" is certainly one way to describe them...
Ryu is like Scorpion, he is the poster boy
Street Fighter changes the main protagonist in each game
In SF1 it was Ryu
In SF2, the main protagonists are Guile and Chun-Li
In SF3 Alex became the main protagonist.
then SF4 it was supposedly Abel
SF5 allegedly it's Rashid
SF6 I guess is now Luke
Amazingly until mk5 (mid 2000s)Liu Kang was the star
In SF2 was Ryu and Ken. Didn't you watch the anime movie? Or the anime Street Fighter 2 Victory?
Guile was only the protagonist in Hollywood and that lame cartoon adaptation for kids.
To be honest every american adaptation of SF2 was terrible. At least the first Mortal Kombat movie was cool but Street Figther with Van Damme? That was trash man and you can ask anybody would say the same.
@@SorcererLance I didn't know that Rashid is supposed to be the protag of SFV, his presence was not that strong.
@betoboyblogs135 Lame? LAME?! No show with this line could possibly be lame!
"I killed your father, so what? I killed my father, too, and you don't see me whining about it!"
But yeah, the American cartoon wasn't great. Most around that time werent.
Every Street Fighter is the main character from their POV!
Definitely one of my favorite characters
I’ll be honest, when I first played this game in the arcades back in 91, I always thought Guile was the main character until after the 2000s.
Whoa! I didnt know Guile was kens brother in law?!?!? *Mind BLOWN!!*
I love how in the Streetfighter II Animated Movie, Guile is knocked out without doing much but at the end he's like, "We got our revenge, Chun Li."
Anyway, I like how Guile's current "whirlwhind" forearms look like Wamuu - another JoJo character than was basically a more awesome Polnareff before Polnareff.
I legit thought Abel was Charlie wen SF4 came out 😅😅😅
Guile of course is not the main character. But he was super OP as a game character especially in SF2, secret moves etc, which contributes to his rising popurarity as well. I really like his buddy scenes with ChunLi in the SF2 movie as he really cares about her.
When I was in the military, I found a Guile figure key chain. Sadly, I lost it about a month later. I guess he wanted to stay in the military.
Where can i find that guile theme for your ending lol
When I first came to the game I thought Guile was the main character simply because of the ease of his move set. No one can really do a shoryuken without grinding 😉 so to do a blade kick and a sonic boom fairly simply made him seem like an accessible character for all which made him THE character for me.
Guile has been the main since SF2 as it should be. His story made more sense than anyone's in my opinion.
Guile was totally absent in Street Fighter III, core releases of Alpha series, & primary roster of Street Fighter V. And he got a rather dim treatment when it came to the theme track in Street Fighter IV.
Where from the states is guile from ?
Guile was only the main character in the Street Fighter movie & cartoon on USA channel, Ryu was the main character in Street Fighter game Franchise
If I get a steam deck I can download marvel vs Capcom and play it on the plane without wifi?
4:01 "What's a Dhalsim?"
*SMACK!*
"OH!"
😆
I love that commercial
14:21 YUM!!!
This music really does go with everything.
Guile clearly has a future in pro wrestling (along with several other memorable Street Fighter 2 characters)
Subtitles at 13:47 say "Sin's plans have been farted" - reminded me of Officer Crabtree from 'allo 'allo.
Big Daddy Top Hat still making great content. Thanks!
The reason why America shows guile to be the main character in the game and in half of the media we had is because he was the most popular
We weren't lied to. There was no Guile in the OG SF and when 2 came out, they had their own storyline except for Ken and Ryu.
Many people from Asia in the past always pronounced his name as Goo Lee cos they could not say his name properly.
I've played street fighter....but I never had the tee shirt....but I was a guile man myself when I played
Guile theme is best theme
One of the best characters. His stage and music are epic!
Guile is the secondary character who helps drive the story forward. Ryu’s battle with himself, and his destiny was always the core story.
Thumbnail Guile with eyebrows is terrifying, lol.
Weirdly, I swear I remember Guile saying "Moon Kick" whilst performing the flash kick.
Yet I can find no reference to it.
I think I've jumped timelines again 😂
6:46…. That throw lol
The Magic Throw 😁
Invisible throw
Guile isn’t a pilot.
He’s a JTAC/TACP Officer.
(Special Operations)
English for civilians please. Also, the animated movie had him disembarking a jet
New SF movie with Channing Tatum as Guiale, Bas Rutten as Sagot, and Mike Tyson as Bolrog. Maybe Robert Downey Jr as M. Myson
He was definitely my favorite. Always used him, and Blanka.
As a Guile main back in the day. YES!!!!
Why did they change Guile's face in SF2 to SF2 champion edition?
3:28 Ryu's from wish.
Who remember skullo ... His moves where broken if you knew how to use him he was very hard to beat

I think they [ the people sitting in meetings about who to market to the west, and who western children would relate to and favor ! ]

Well Chun-Li would be 3 and Akuma 4.
Guile is doing just fine.
That street fighter alpha story line was pretty serious.
The soundtrack to Street Fighter ex plus alpha was 🔥
I always thought guile should have been played by Dolph Lundgren and DJ played by Billy Blanks in the movie. But they just wanted Van Damme because he was super popular at the time.
Always been more of Ryu/Ken guy, but Guile would be next up for me. A very pivotal character in the series.
Imagine a character debuting in PART II of a game series being the "real main character." Without Ryu, Ken and even Sagat there would be no Guile.
Used to think Guile was main guy growing up
Same, but as a kid I thought street fighter was American, and mortal kombat was made in japan
Guile is my favourite SF Charakter since his Debut in the OG SFII and he ever will be.
It's called playstyles and variation
I still can't do his sonic boom move. Crazy part is he's my favorite character. 😂
All of us who grew up at that time knew the main character was ryu
IN PAKISTAN WE NOT EVEN THINKS FOR PLAYNG WITH GUILE AS WE CALLED HIM MALIKO

Street Fighter - Ryu
Street Fighter 2 - Guile
Street Fighter 3 - Alex
Street Fighter 4 - Abel
Street Fighter 5 - Rashid
Street Fighter 6 - Ken
6:45 no one really talks about his invisible throw in early versions of SF2
Street Fighter is Ryu
And although guile was always a main character
I thought it was obvious that the primary main character has been Ryu from day 1
As a kid, I would swear there was a “ . “ after the G in his name. So I would call him General Uile. All my friends thought I was crazy. I thought I’d be vindicated when the movie came out. So when it did and he was rightly named Guile, I was laughed at for weeks 😂😂😂
Sorry not sorry, I made my favorite character Ken Masters a long time ago!
yes. I prefer to believe he is the main character.
Guile looks like bodybuilder but also less popular
He's not the main trio or even the fourth rail but he's popular enough to get recognized. He's not exactly second tier in terms of ease of play and popularity.

Sonic Boom.... Flash Kick!!
As we learned from the sequel game "Street Fighter 2010", the ultimate victor of Street Fighter is Ken, who is the true main character.
Guile and Chun Li were the mains in SF2. Only those two had a reason to fight Bison.
