They made the toilets transparent for two really practical reasons : you can see from anyside if the bathroom is empty, and you can check if it's clean without entering.

That toilet is one of the projects called “The Tokyo Toilet” carry out by Nippon Foundation. The number of people who use public toilets are decreasing these days because these aren’t clean and some people think they are scary. So Nippon Foundation started this project with some artists and big toilet maker TOTO. 17 more toilets like this in different concept will coming out soon in Shibuya,Tokyo.

@@arandomindian1197 I am 4 months late but... it depends on the LCD technology. Some will retain whatever state they were in before the power was cut. Most of the ones that I know of that are like this are black and white, like a kindle paper-white or calculator type of lcd display. It's also possible that they turn transparent when power is cut, though I cant name any technology that does this off the top of my head. I just know it's possible to arrange the crystals in an LCD such that this would happen. So it is possible, just highly unlikely they chose the type of lcd that would do that.

When an electric current is applied, the liquid crystal molecules line up, the incidental light passes through, and the privacy glass becomes clear. When the power is turned off, the liquid crystals return to their normal scattered positions rendering the glass an opaque translucent.
If there is a power outage it returns to an opaque.
We install this in the states

I used a public toilet once in California that only gave you 10 minutes to do your business before the door opened, when you left it closed and automatically cleaned itself. The magic glass is just a single color LCD screen that turns on/off. You can get them on home windows for privacy.

In Texas, we have bathrooms that you can see everything outside while you’re going, but no one can see in. Two-way mirror situation. Thankfully, even when you put your face against the glass you still can’t see inside. I did make the mistake of using it at night and using my phone flashlight to see. Thank goodness it’s a small and quiet town because my husband told me he could see me when I had the light on 😂😂😂

So occasionally a Japan Real Estate UA-cam video will pop up in my feed. And Japan Apartments sometimes are WEIRD! Sometimes in a good and interesting way and sometimes not. One of the most recent ones had 2 windows for the bathroom! One was right by the shower and the other was close to the toilet. There were blinds on those windows for privacy, but still. The windows looked out into the hallway that led to the bedroom. And this isn't the first time that I've seen this in a Japanese apartment. It happens a lot! I only saw this privacy glass thing once in a real estate video for a mansion in Beverly Hills. It was in a bathroom shower.

Suspended-particle devices use a thin film laminate of rod-like nano-scale particles suspended in a liquid and placed between two pieces of glass or plastic. When no voltage is applied, the suspended particles are randomly organized, thus blocking and absorbing light. When voltage is applied, the suspended particles align and let light pass...

    Nope.
It is smart glass, when electricity is run threw it it is transparent.
When you lock the door you turn off the electricity to the glass and it turns Opaque.

Looks like folks beat me to the punch in referencing the LCD-esque membrane. Similar tech was used on the Boeing Dreamliner's sunshades and the moonroof on the Maybach 57 & 62, so...is this the Maybach of toilets?

In the museum"Friedländer Gate" Friedländer Tor-exhibition"About the water supply and sewerage systems of Königsberg"-the idea of this exhibition arose because there was no toilet in the Friedland Gate Museum in Kaliningrad for a very long time-in 2009,sponsors from Germany gave money for toilet for the construction of water supply and sewerage networks:Municipality of Bremerhaven-Claus Polansky-Claus Polansky,Clanker-Bremerhaven Private Foundation-civilization begins with sewage-there were toilets in the castles of the Teutonic Order.closed line.

Technically the toilet bowl is a sink. If it's purpose is to drain or drain through, it's a sink. Think of a heat sink. I'd have to study and think for awhile though to determine which is the wash basin. I don't want to use the bidet, or anything used as one, for my hands or face.

What if you have an electromagnetic pulse and put it up to the glass? Will it allow the glass to be transparent?

I think it's a good use of liquid crystal polymer sandwiched between glass.
I wonder what the energy and water consumption is per year for those kinds of public toilets.
