You’re right there that it is mental! How steep do you reckon it is? I reckon about 35%. Maybe a smidge bit more. Have you been able to Get all the way up this brutal climb without stopping?
@andrewon2wheels I think it's about 35% yes, last time I did it was summer this year, off roader on the HT so carried on passed the YHA where you turned round, I carried on up to the top of Drum, did 21 miles and 5245 feet of elevation, took a few days to recover 🤣
What’s it like further up? I can totally believe that level of elevation in the Conwy Valley. It’s a brutal area to ride. What the hardest on the valley in your opinion?
@@andrewon2wheels goes to bridleway and joins into another lane that takes you back down or carries on up off road. The BW after the YHA would be doable on a road bike (I've done it on a gravel bike, MTB but not a road bike) but can get muddy so pick a good summer window for it. I think that way up to the YHA is the toughest road climb I know round there, but off road there is plenty tougher ones + the added fact they are rough off road too.
He's right the gap in arthog terrace across the estuary from Barmouth is the worst . Longest hardest gradient I've yet encountered anywhere in north Wales.
@@andrewon2wheels Bwlch Y groes. Stwlan Dam . Penllech in Harlech. Done the lot many times. Arthog for me at 90kg is the worst combination of gradient narrowness and difficulty maintaining friction.
@@barmouthbridge8772 you’re the same weight as me. What gearing do you have? I’ve done Bwlch Y Groes and Stwlan Dam but not the 40% beast in Harlech. How’s the compare to others?
@@andrewon2wheels 34 front 30 back Penllech has to be attacked round the first bend as the first 200 yards is steep as. not enough pace into the first 2 bends and you simply fall over. if it's wet you've no chance on narrow tyres. it's short though. couple of minutes and you're done.
You’ve got much tougher gearing than me. I come extremely prepared for the steep stuff with an 11-42 and 46-30. Makes getting up multiple of these climbs much more manageable. Best upgrade I’ve done to my bike.
@@andrewon2wheels Thanks, I'll have a look at those! The vid was brutal by the way, I only have a Gravel bike at mo (only been riding 2 months) but my next goal is a light road bike to do hill sprints also.. the pain is just fun idk. :)
It’s upto you but personally I’d save your money and stick with the gravel bike atm. The easier gears of a gravel bike will help with the hills and you’re early into cycling. You’ve got loads of newbie gains to gain atm and they’ll come fast early on. So enjoy that! Personally I use a gravel bike but I’ve up road tyres on. That’s what I would recommend early on with upgrades to your bike, instead of a new bike. But that’s upto you what you do. Which hills you looking to do?
Totally agree! Haha That’s why I’ve fitted extremely low gearing onto my bike. I have a 46-30 on the front paired with an 11-42 on the back. Gives me a fight chance on all climbs now.
Fair play returning 5 times on this climb! Sucker for punishment. I respect that, determination to not be defeated. Which time was your first success on the climb? And was the first on the road or mountain bike?
Awesome job.
Thanks mate.
Many more climb videos like this to come.
And next summer I’ll attempt this again. Try and get up it in one.
Rowen is a killer, that last bend is mental, best on a hardtail MTB.

what are you using to record these? I'd like to record my own rides (as a new rider) in similar angles so I can look at what I do poorly etc.
