This is THE way of "meaningful learning" which we can actually apply to our real life. Solving problems for the Pythagoras's theorem in a class room does not mean anything unless those students use the knowledge for something like this. Thank you for making the bridge.

Yes. I remember doing pythagoras at school thinking "I'll never need to know this" - then 40 years later building my own house and learning the 3-4-5 for setting out! Now if they'd told us the 3-4-5 practical application at school I'd have been far more interested.

Jane, you are a saint. The first 2 minutes, I already understood it. I just demoed my 5'x8' bathroom and trying to square it up to build out the wall to get a bathtub in. This helped me to make a square inside the room and then see how much it's off in certain areas. I also have to tile and make sure is level, as you know this finicky detail work that takes forever is going to pay off in spades later when actually start tiling and have the bathtub in before I tile :)

I have always been taught that you simply keep doubling your numbers from 345 up to square longer footage.....6-8-10.......12-16-20......24-32-40 etc....the higher the number you go the more exact and squared up it will be. Oh! always measure form the same side of the tape thru the whole process.

For us metric countries I adapted this to metric using leah's numbers if your tape measure is in mm only.
    So 3,4,5 feet = 300, 400, 500 mm.
    A bit bigger- = 600, 800, 1000 mm
A bigger room can be 3,4,5 in meters :)
