To be honest I think Evenepoel made the right decision staying on that side because he could've pulled a whole peloton into a bunch of spectators had he moved over
Including the amateur holding his wheel on the climb earlier
looking at this i think they really got lucky none of the spectators made any dumb move and caused a crash
and surprisingly, it wouldnt be as dumb of a move like omi opi. The spectators were probably as confused as the riders themselves
@@daktus05 yeah, would have been the organisers fault here, but in some way organiser at the tour were also not completly innocent by using the roads they did...
@@Phikite yeah, almost all tour there was issues with either road or barriers...
Would have loved to see that. las Malvinas son británicas.
What a gong show. Fire the organizer.
That was a disgrace. Moving spectators. Parked cars and a shoddy finish. But nice leadout by Danny and a good win for Sam
Can't blame the spectators. They thought the racers were going to be on the course. Terrible job by the organizers, They're probably on their five hour Argentine lunch break.
You don't even know them.
@@charliedillon1400 los argentinos no almuerzan XD es un país POBRE
@@Jsksksidjd4421 bueno, "siesta" pues...
@@Jsksksidjd4421 Los argentinos desayunamos, almorzamos, merendamos y cenamos. No tenés idea de nada...
Thanks. Its good to be back with 2023 season upon us. Poor route marshalling by the local race organisers but surely the UCI itself must bear responsibility for checking out the signage and barriers in the last 3km?.
I guess the UCI marshals were top busy checking sock length and briefing the riders on why the "TT position" on a road bike is too dangerous to be used even for a split second
UCI taking any responsibility/initiative? Get outta here
I’d be pissed too, what were the organizers thinking?
Patrick, I've been watching you for years and this is one of your all time best breakdowns. Watching the stage, no one (not the commentators, the riders, the spectators) had any clue what was going on. The shots were so poor, that I could not identify the riders. Thank you for bringing clarity to this mess of a stage
Poor job by the race organizers, they’re just bloody lucky no spectators got collected at that speed because it would have been very nasty.
The divider at 5:04... absolutely dangerous. I saw that on the teli, and I was livid! That divider was the main reason for half the group not having a fair run into the final sprint. Also, its super dangerous, it can eaily send a rider flying if they did not notice it or hop it...
How can the UCI look at that finish and make it eligible to race on?!
It is insane that they have no barriers with that many people around the sprint. Imagine the carnage if one of those spectators struck the peloton
Just gotta say, you have the best intros - Normally I'll skip the first 10-20 seconds of a video because it's just random talk or a logo spinning, but you alway give a cliff hanger. Great stuff!
When we are trying to work out where the riders were supposed to be and we can pause and kinda work it out. I can’t imagine what the riders are feeling at the speed they are going.
Poor planning.
Thamks LR for a great recap/review. What a mess. Great to have you back on YT doing your thing. 👌
4:50 parking cars on the road, people opening car doors, a fckn BUS letting people in and out, even a driving car head on direction! wtf! and all those people standing on the road. its a miracle that nothing bad happened. the uci better check their sock lenght!
WE’RE BACK BABY.
Last few kilometers were a mess. The organisers are fortunate that no accidents happened in that lead in to the finish. Super sketchy
Excellent insight and video breakdown, this is why we love your content.
Shocking organization. By the way Bernal came in at 28th with DFM and Higuita. MAL was 39th.
Super dangerous. I was very nervous just watching. Was waiting for a spectator or dog to run into the bunch
I think Remco is a manchild but I have to agree with him on this one. The spectators and road furniture was a mess on these finnishing stretches where the speed is 65+ kph. Spectators should never be inbetween a split group like that and it's not the riders fault for the splitting up.
As a resident of a developing country, I would like to thank you for pointing out how much more dangerous cycling here is compared to Europe. Cycling infrastructure and cycling events organized by people who know nothing about cycling brings inherent dangers. 😳
yup, sacrife one race to save season, good call evenpoel
They were lucky that didn't turn out worse. The way Remco was going was the safer way and how they organizers should have set it up, but from the red banner it looks like they were supposed to jump onto that little narrow section of the road. Strange. They need a lot more flag wavers if they're not going to have barriers.
Morkov's basically a grandfather and was pulling up on Bennett there at the end, this guy's insane.
@@tcrow456 Get off it, silly man. The comments were fine until you and your petty drivel showed up.
Woah. Now that I've seen the replay. If you look at the flamme rouge arch, there's a rope crossing the evenepoel side of the road where a rider could've got his head stuck in it.... By the looks of it the left side of the road wasn't part of the race
I don't think it goes across the road, it goes along the divider and is tied to the traffic sign.
Everyone who liked that comment has to open their eyes properly. It is very clearly visible that it was tied to the sign. :o
@@jamaly77 oh yeah, you're right. I lost contact with the parked white cars but you're right that the sign has a tie on it where the rope ends. My bad
How dangerous that was. I am not a fan of Evenepoel but he is totally right
He was furious understandably due to shoddy race direction/planning on the route at the most intense and dangerous part. I'm sure they went over the finish as a team though, right? They probably wouldn't go into something like that "blind" as they are WT pros!
Always enjoy the cricketing analogy. SammyB with the big drive through deep cover. Shame Remco decided to go in the direction of Silly Mid Off
But what you gonna do ☘️
So glad you're back. Missed the cycling coverage. Will be a most excellent season.
Maybe he saw the random guy who sucked his wheel on that training ride?
very insightful thanks
Appreciate your insight
Finally we have the races Back.
3:05, that's quite the view
hopefully next year the organisers plan the roads are lot better because that looked scary at times
Will not be next year for sure for many riders and teams after this mess! At least certainly not a 2.1 status race!
Finish was badly planned !! But great win for team Bora ! Top commentary as always
Think Remco probably decided to go change course and go left because it would have been very tight for him making it to the right side.
And if it's very tight for him at the front, it's going to be even tighter for the peloton following him. Looks like he made the right call to me.
Bij het veldrijden wordt het gehele parkoer met rood/wit lint afgezet voor toeschouwers en deels met dranghekken . Dit kunnen ze hier in de laatste 4 km zeker toepasbaar !
It is only mid-January and already we have witnessed how despite yearly proclamations about rider safety, the UCI do not give a damn about actual rider safety. It is just a catch-phrase or scape-goat for whenever they want to punish riders or distract from talking points. They do not care. They do not follow their own rules. No matter how unsafe these races are, the UCI will still award them another race next year. Just like in Poland. The UCI are a disgrace. They continually dishonour their own rules, mission statement, and the trust of the riders.
Think Remco had finished his turn, which was huge. Jakobsen not following Morkov is the issue, his lead out man is veering right to change sides and he doesn't follow him. Prior to this he had got off his train and on Sagan's wheel. If he doesn't have confidence in this train then he is wasting everybody's time, he won't get much better anywhere else. There would be quite a few sprinters on other teams willing to trade places.
He’s often pissed off with everything else when it doesn’t go his way. But to be fair, this was a shmozzle
Do you have an example, what he was pissed off in the past? I’m genuinely interested, would be interesting to know what you’re talking about.
a full 200 or 250 meters of boarding, amazing
Sammy B back at it! LR may not rate him but great to see
He doesn't look as fast as his early quickstep days, but his understanding with his leadout is still top notch
@@eoinsmith1996 100%, you know he always appears to have great led out men, I don't think that's a coincidence, seems easy to work with
If not proper sign and marshal well they will go all over the road for the best trajectory especialy in the crazy sprint preperation! Even local race in Belgium is well more organised and secured! Not sure many riders or teams will get back there! Even UCI could retire 2.1 status all together!
Stupid dangerous course!
They are 100% not on the side of the road the organizers expected them to take. Looks like they only prepared the right side. You can see how the cars were also only (mostly) cleared from one side of the divided road. Weird.
6:57👌
This is what you get when you race in South America and want to finish in a city. This is already too hard to pull off in western Europe. No surprise here. I am actually loving these finishes where there are potholes, parked cars, moving spectators in the final 4k. Reminds me of the cage match between Mankind and The Undertaker.
Was Remco completing his pull? Either way, it was dangerous, and I'm not sure Fábio stays on the wheel he needs to follow. And so much that was sketchy from the organizers here.
Assuming no one was seriously injured in that last crash? It felt like a lot of panic began at that point.
Great explanation. There's always stuff I miss no matter how many replays I watch. Thanks!
Hopefully Bennett finally gets a fair go this year. He's top class and has had no luck the last 2 years.
Safety Officer’s field day right there. What a joke.
Yes! You have the right to broadcast the race ;-)
Tiene razón que llegada tan peligrosa.
Patrick, your breakdown of this race finish is amazing and needed less than 24 hours after race to put out!
Mørkøv 2nd! How cool is that? :))
I'm beyond appalled at the lack of foresight by the race organizers. I'm glad Remco chose not to try and go to the left. It's possible that he and who knows how many others in the peloton might have crashed otherwise. Thank you for the detailed breakdown Patrick.
That's racing in the 3rd world. Traffic "flow" is totally different....meaning...you're pretty much on your own. But yeah, that cross-over was a complete mess. Did Venezuela not invent traffic cones yet??
Here in the Philippines, bike races take place and traffic is not even held or diverted. The 2-3 race moto's just flash their lights and horns and hope traffic moves out of the way. Zero reg's or controls on traffic. Luckily, drivers are fairly calm and stop for the race to go by.
Tour of Poland is in a first world country and its finishes are terrible.
it was argentina but probably germans stayed in 1945 mentally

ya BOI remco
There’s a lot of good with this race in Puerto Rico.
And we see the logistics problem at the end of the stage where Remco isn’t wrong with his complaints.
Just goes to show how important safety measures are and when you see a race go down say in Belgium, without any real hiccups no one says anything about it and it seems standard. Races without hiccups or problems or disasters is an absolute win for everybody every time.
This is Argentina, not Puerto Rico.
The teams would’ve done a recon of the final few kilometers though, right? Isn’t that standard for a sprint stage? So it was there job to know what the road was like and where the dividers were. It seemed like they had the option to be on either side of the divider and maybe some teams chose wrong or didn’t even know it was coming up. I would definitely want to know where I was going in advance if I was a sprinter or part of a lead out since they’re going so fast and there’s basically no time to make decisions on the road.
they would do a recon using google street view etc. not actually riding down the finish straight on the day of the event. The barriers & dividers would not be in the recon they do.
Evvveeennepoeellll
patrick probably stomping his feet right now lol
The island spectators looked like they were waiting for a bus.
Check the flamrouge , was also on the right side of the road. Not on Remco side
Remco finally showing a strong leadership of the peloton in those rainbow stripe
6:13 Oh god, imagine Remco driving further to the right from our perspective here, against the string holding the bow.... WTF
No se les olvide q estan en Latinoamérica
...Peter Sagan finis urursn berapa tuan ?...
Remco seems to be better suited to triathlon, individual effort where you can just be strong and not look where you're going :)
UCI at it´s best :-(
alway the s(h)ame at January/February races.
Here me out…Imagine if they had a governing body for cycling that oversaw stage parcour and rider safety. They can even name international cycling union. 😮
The spectators on that "island" must have shat themselves!
This was like some movie, what lanterne said made no sense until last minute where everything made sense. Half of things i couldnt even understand.
lots of roadsigns missing there. What a mess
ua-cam.com/video/UAqjV_7Gf7g/v-deo.html - The riders managed to duck under the line tensioning the big red arch! That was a potential decapitation!! 😵
at 4:11 you can see the person with the flag
Tour Down Under...World classic...World Organization ...World Spectators ....I think one
of the reason the top bike riders do not come to the T.D.U. is because the Australian
bike riders are well prepared .
So sketch. I think someone was spraying a hose on the pelo near the finish also.
The video is all black screen for mee 😢
Looks like the finish was organised by Disney because that was full Mickey Mouse 🐭🐭🐭
Muppet Show imo ...
Tried to watch Stage 4 today, but once again modern technology was just to hard to figure out and we only got to see the last 30 seconds of racing. It is 2023, is it not?
That was insane. Super sketchy, kind of hilarious that type of thing is just more or less accepted
what happened to the font on the cyclists names? the old one was better! ;)
Nizzolo🏁
Did I hear Bernal crash???!?? Bro you can't just casually drop that
So basically, UCI is a joke part #987
Ha sido una vergüenza el recorrido final, coches aparcados, gente apostada en cualquier parte, isletas en medio de la carretera, increíble!
Tour of Pologna Vibes😂
It was a weird ending. Little to no idea what was going on and a finish that came out of nowhere thanks to the poor production. But well done Mørkøv, I guess.
If the side on the riders' left wasn't closed to traffic that could have been a fatal disaster.
ow it happens more Remco angree. Even he is still verry young, he is a real leadertype.
Do you think those South American teams belong in the race? That was the most squirly crash ever..
Hate to say this…lack of control by race organizers is really bad…there has been so many close calls over the years
One of, if not the best example of the worse organized, run, designed stages ever. Only through the experience of the riders, and recognizing the danger did they avoid a potentially horrible event..
How confusing!
Fist time in LATAM! What he expect, Europe? 🤷♂ Patrick Lefevre didn´t tell him what was like
That was indeed a shocker of a finish, think Remco was justified in being angry
Worst finish organization ever?
Sprint finishes...I couldn't care less...I hope that Remco will just chill-out, use his head, and get back to more racing like he did in the Worlds and at LBL.
Evenepoel was right to be mad, that was a shit show. It's 100% on the race organizers to make the race course clear at all times. If both spectators and riders are confused, that's a huge and potentially very dangerous problem
