"mankees" is how you pronounce the name in Afrikaans.
I had to doubletake during Meintjes’ post-race interview when he mentioned this as his first WT win. He’d been in the mix so many times over the years I was shocked that he’d never actually won before.
Congratulations Louis Meintjes, your interveiw straight after your win was of a humble man. Well done on your goal of finishing on the podium in a world tour race/event before retiring...even better, as a winner of one of this year's world tour's toughest stage wins. What a Stage, and what a win.

Absolutely insane how steep some of the sections were on that final climb. To see those guys going that slow, geez.

@@m.a.c1379 I walked up 29% gradient, rode 25.5% on bicycle, walking it's not that hard. Going on bike killed me in the middle of climb on this incline. You need 300+ watts to move 4-5 km/h.

Thanks Pat for this excellent overview. On the issue of Roglic its clear he is not at the level has has been at in the past and IMO I don't think he has recovered fully from the back injury sustained on stage 6 of the TDF. If you watch him when he is off the bike - he is stiff with a slightly hunched posture.
I don’t think he’s been at top level since injury very early in the season.
He is clearly struggling but also lacking team support in the clinches.
@@johnharris1543 he starting to look washed imo, go back and watch how he got bailed out by wva in the last stage of paris-nice, in which he got dropped by runner up simon Yates, so in crit de dauphine in which Vingegard handed him the win, his vuelta teams trash though, with the exception of Kuss

@esteban lopez, Roglic is far from washed. But he is less dominant as he was ussually. He dropped half of training for vuelta, because of injury on TDF.

Great tactics by Meintjes, going for the breakaway win the day before a rest day. The breakwaway tactic works so much better for him than the follow-the-GC leaders tactic. First Alpe D'Huez, now this, fantastic! Loving this new aggressive riding from him! An epic stage win like this is long overdue, he fully deserves it. From a proud South African 🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦
Evenepoel is part of the new wave of youngsters who are not afraid to attack and to have someone in their wheel; raiders like Simon Yates would have slowed down as soon as realized someone was behind them, but luckily wind is changing...
I think it’s just his way of climbing. In Norway he played a bit of the cat and mouse game with Vine and another rider but then went for his own steady cadence and dropped in. I’m glad there are riders with different styles

its true every time. if Rogla is 100% he will be in the top 5 riders starting a climb. if he is further back he isnt feeling good and will crack later.

I really wonder if Remco will crack this vuelta as he never finished a grand tour yet. If he doesn't, this vuelta is over. If he does, it will be very very interesting if Roglic can get some time in the ITT on all the other gc contenders
he can still lose everything in sierra nevada, guadarrama or even peñas blancas or pandera. remember, some leaders have looked unbeatable in the past, going for every stage, and ended up paying very dearly for it

its his first proper grand tour, the giro can't been seen as proper becaus of his recovery. we will see at the moment he is looking at the best form ever.
@@matthiasehling6763 roglic almost blew it in 2020 as well, dumoulin lost in 2015 and almost in 2017, kruijswijk crashed off the maglia rosa in 2016 and froome lost la vuelta that year because nairo got in the head of the race at formigal thanks to contador. lots of things can happen

Remco never got out of the saddle, even on the sections >20%.
There's no reason to think he can't handle steep climbs when he's looking as lean as he looks right now. I'd say the only question left is his consistency.
A couple of years ago I'd have said that consistency only comes with experience / years... then Pogocar happened. As a proper Dutch guy I still have to admit he's looking in excellent shape so far. But a grand tour is 3 weeks.
The question is not the steepness but the length. How will he handle proper mountain stages. The fact that he never finished a 3 week tour is something his opponents will challenge him on in the later stages

yates at 2018 giro was looking incredibly dominant and then blew up. if a team - uae or ineos stand the best chance - can put remco into the red late in the race, it could blow things wide open
still also seems possible for someone to do a ben o'connor tdf '21, win from the break and move way up on gc. maybe even ben o'connor himself, tho gino mader seems to be sitting at the perfect spot for that

The only pronunciation I've heard in South Africa is much closer to "main keess", the emphasis on the first syllable, short second syllable. But different Afrikaans communities might say the 'tj' differently.

this wasn't a bad day though for Roglic. Remco did this climb at record speed. Every loss between around 20-40 seconds by his competitors, is a stellar performance. In case of Roglic, losing 50 seconds indicates a good result. Maybe Roglic could do better, but it's not exactly cracking.

What happen on roglics
There motorbikes are not disciplined ahead of right turns like this. They give the lead so much draft accelerating out of these corners. They need to pull out further ahead
There was even a part where the peleton got stuck behind a descending motorbike. Honestly just shit organisation.
Any spectators running alongside the competitors need to be arrested. Make it a no no. Sick of this behavior.
Another video with Meintjes mentioned .. there is no K, it's Mein T jes, you are saying the Mein part great, however than there should be a 'T' as in Tank, and then the 'jes' as in JUStice
Remco might not show it but he's already spent on the 1st week, he will be paying for that on the 2nd week.

It's not the same P/kg on steep climbs:
Slightly different muscle groups get used ( Evenepoel trained on this, also got more muscular in general, weighs 2 kg more then giro last year) so it's not the same Power as on flat/less steep climbs,thus not the same P/kg.
Steeper climbs are the norm in mountain bike racing. I’m sure that experience helps.
I know the area of Spain where he sets up training camp for the winter, there are some steep climbs there. Will these steep climbs be what changed his body or would it need also weight training?

Please be more specific. What's the difference exactly in terms of muscle groups? w/kg is w/kg. You have a slightly lower natural cadence on the hills, however, this is mostly down to individual preference and bike fit, and if you have the gearing you can spin the whole way as plenty of cyclists have done in the past. I mostly prefer shorter efforts at a higher cadence, but I ride a few hills and my body gets used to lower cadences astonishingly quickly.
Why does marking vine prevent him from going to the break? Shouldn’t he just keep going and eventually the whole break will be caught or he would be able to make it into the break
Can only try so many times. Trying to go in a break costs energy.
Primos has had a hard time the last few stages, he is not at his best and will have to improve if he is to beat Remco.

The Vuelta is clearly an afterthought for jumbo visma. Honestly, Jumbo shouldn’t have put Primo Rologic in the Vuelta, especially after having him peak for the tour. They should have had him target next years giro.
How convenient La Vuelta becomes an afterthought the year Roglic can't win it.
@@Nifava Jumbo is clearly in a predicament. Now that Jonas won the Tour de France, Jumbo is going to be worried that Roglic will move to another team unless they get him a grand tour victory. They are trying to fulfill two agendas with one team.

Evenepoel gives the lie to needing to start young as a bike racer, he has a huge motor, end of story, it's a strange sport, amazing motors and amazing downhill crashes........because most of these late bloomers can't descend. How often do you see Sagan or Allaphillipe crash on descents, relatively rare. Think of sports like swimming, golf, soccer, tennis, you start late, you NEVER make it as a pro. Still glad to see such good young talent, it's probably a golden age of cycling with Bernal, Pogecar, Evenepoel, Ayuso, etc. Just beasts (with most except Pogecar having huge, terrible crashes)

What changed with remco this time? He wasn’t able to hold great performance for 3 weeks but all of a sudden he’s putting it together. And is roglic just not in form? I don’t see how remco is that much better than him
Notice how his acceleration has dropped off? He went all in on steep Mountain passes. He trained on a 12km 10.5 percent mountain.
Well first of all this is Remco's first grand tour with a decent preparation, for the Giro last year he should have never been allowed to start. Secondly, it's still 2 weeks but the haters who would like to see him crack, I don't think he will based on his preparation. He's got a really good solid base and should be able to sustain this. But yeah it's still long and the biggest tests are yet to come. I see Ayuso as potentially the biggest threat, Roglic will probably crack based on his limited preparation for the Vuelta

Nope. He belongs at Quickstep, and he knows it. Being in that team keeps unnecessary pressure away from him.
@@andredeketeleastutecomplex I'd say it's quite the opposite... riding in a Belgian team as a Belgian puts way much pressure on him than being in a foreign team. Plus Ineos or jumbo have actual experience in developing grand tour winners
