Good to see Bernal looking strong after his crash.
Yes, Bravo.. Bernal..
Bernal is doing good 👍
Dude 90 kg teammate destroyed him. how is this performamce described strong
Cannot agree more. I’ve missed big punch B
@@RazDU The climb is so shallow that Ganna's pure watts mean more than watts per kg, and also he's more like 82kgs.
Bernal did 5.6 watts per kg for the last 23 minutes at altitude, yeah not TDF winning shape, but promising.
@Lanterne Rouge, Superman didn't say anything spicy, but in the interview in spanish, he was in tears and very emotional acknowledging the nightmare of his situation in the last part of last year. Then, he expressed his gratitude with his o family and people, and with the team. he said he is relaxed now and no looking for results
He created this situation! Its his fault! Doping, the bad behaviour in Movistat...
@@dididubalier2196 His name has been cleaned in the last couple of days after the doctor gave a declaration that his ties to him were based on nutrition
@@dididubalier2196 movistar spanish team thinks every colombian is their slave. Just like 500 years ago
It's worth remembering that MAL wasn't dropped and then shunned by WT teams because they thought he couldn't climb...
Lo mismo pasa ahora mismo con nairo
I dont think there is any doubt that he can not climb. You might want to turn on google again for the reason MAL is not on a WT Team. Hint, the problem is not his fitness :D
That guy is just bad press and I don't mean as in "he has a big mouth" but other things. No way a WT will pick him up. It's sponsor suicide!
@@brunospasta I think you've misread my comment, that's exactly what I'm saying!
@@isaacscott4485 Now that I read it again. You are right 😅🙈 My bad
Higuita behind Ganna at 3:27 is hilarious. Higuita isn’t taking any wind.
My fave kind of racing - it’s an hour plus shallow climb; no where to hide; heart + legs + heads-up racing. Well played.
Great to see Bernal back at a normal level. Seems he doesn't have any long term impacts from his crash, and should be as good as he ever has been
If his back holds out...
😂4:37 a bonk from Higuita that we can ALL relate to.
Great stuff. Love the podcast but more plain LR please!
The Colombians have been training an entire winter (summer for them) at altitude and are preparing for the national championship. It's to be expected that Remco can't follow those guys at 2500m of altitude.
Al campeonato nacional solo vienen a pasear , con decirte que nairo una vez casi gana el campeonato de cronómetro individual ☠️
@Pixel in Colombia, THERE AREN'T SEASONS... It is tropical countries :p . and all dependent where in Colombia de ciclist is training... regarding altitude.
It is good to recognise the quality. Even more for Superman, who has been in a nightmare with the suspected doping/Astana issue. Superman clearly stated that he started training in Jan, and he is feeling relieved... So great form... for a guy of great quality. and Remco should just recognise that the others are right now stronger.
@@Jsksksidjd4421 I would imagine Higuita and Bernal are targetting the road race. Same with Lopez maybe
@@cospinan he did that attack to see how he would digest it. That means he had good legs. He was just a minute behind
@@Jsksksidjd4421 Yo soy el que va a pasear a ese campeonato en bucara y pasar todo el fincho jarto
Bernal. Amazing. That little guy was broken in a million pieces.
It's really great to see Bernal back in shape😁
CT win at 2.pro level has to be extremely rare, especially if he even takes the GC. Same goes for a 83 kg (probably more like 86 now early season) rider in 2nd on a climbing stage
do you think he gained weight? only if muscle I guess, even I keep the same weight flat all year
@@robertbalu8001 I gain around 45 kg on christmas eve every year. I do believe weight fluctuation among pros is quite common. For example I heard Remco is carrying a bit extra right now and MVDP has said he likes to lose weight for CX and then gain some before road season. That being said I just re-watched and Ganna is looking leaaaan as hell here :o
I don't think Ganna is heavier now. Wouldn't even be surprised if he did a small peak to this race, considering how well he did on this climb the last few times, maybe one of the few races he could win a mountain stage and GC.
If there had been an ITT, he likely would have won this GC, though maybe Remco then doesn't do a suicide attack and finishes in front/together with Ganna instead.
@@larslosh5598 you meant to say 4-5 kg I hope lol
@@robertbalu8001 The weight that pro cyclists try to race at for their target races is highly unsustainable due to the low body fat %, so it is likely that Ganna is not near his "race-weight" that he would be for a race like the Giro or Worlds, and is instead a couple of kgs heavier.
Lopez definitely trying to prove a point but in the end no World Tour Teams will care, he burned his bridges. Remco definitely at the race mostly for training to get in the miles. Agree that the effort from Bernal was promising in his comeback. If Bernal continues to progress he could be a bigger factor in the hilly TdF route coming up...definitely someone to watch.
So happy to see Bernal back in it
Thanks for this. Tried to watch live but fell asleep. Think it was the endlessly monotone landscape with its brownish grey steppes. Not a great commercial for the area
I guess it is the way it is because of summer also. I am really wondering how much different it is in let's say spring. i knew that Argentina is a bit drier compared to other SA countries, but didn't know it was almost desert dry..
@@janbregar2561 the Dakar rally was organized their when they had to depart from Africa.
I know Argentina can be beautiful, but this was really bleak.
@@janbregar2561 Argentina is not a tiny country. There are different landscapes from north to south.
@@lifeinyellow I just checked this morning. Before this race I thought that there aren't really big mountanis in Argentina and that it's less diverse. Well, tbh, I didn't think about the climate and relief of the country before. So it came to me as a suprise. I guess I have to thank cycling to educate me. :D
Bernal was the highlight for me. Looking forward to seeing his return and hoping he regains a good form.
Thanks for the analysis.
Lopez will absolutely smash the Conti scene I think he will enjoy this year and come back to wt
Came for the classic MAL climb analysis.
Slayed by the classic Bettiol reference.
Medellin kit looking better than anything at WT??
There was a time not so long ago where the Giro favorite wasn't expected to be winning in January! That aside, hopefully this win gives Lopez a lifeline back to WT level.
Guys Like pogi who can win basically all year changed that
@@philipp4776 and guys like Jonas reminded him you still need to plan your peaks.
@@philipp4776 Pogacar didn't change anything. Young riders have always been able to do that except in the EPO era.
Look at Nibali's 2010 season for example. He won Vuelta a San Luis, fought for the win in Tirreno, 3rd in Giro d'Italia, won in Slovenia, 3rd in Burgos, won Vuelta a Espana, 5th in Lombardia.
Or Froome between 2013-17. He won races like the Sun Tour and Tour of Oman and he was good right to the end of Vuelta.
Everyone knows Lopez is WT level. Everyone also knows he isn't clean. He's a liability for any team who signs him.
The problem is his doping not his level
@@bobroberts5820 Everyone knows? Who is everyone? Vinokourov?
Very impressed on Bernal performance today. Specially coming from horrific accident last year.
5:40 I was thinking about that. Great way to break your wrist(s) to btw
Thanks. That looked like a mean climb - long relentless gradient windy dusty very dry. Well done to Lopez. Remco took a gamble on a long range attack which was reasonable given he is known for this but its likely he found that being in the wind all the time was too much.
Thx for the report
You called this in the Cav to Astana podcast, Patrick!🤣
Medellin should get wildcard for Vuelta at least.
Sería algo increíble para el ciclismo Colombiano
Bibleman Lopez had strong legs!
"Remco pleases stay grounded"
LFG Top Ganna
Amazing to see El Nino in the mix at 46 years old.
I always like a lil Mig win. He always seems to get dealt a shitty hand.
And
So good to see Egan back at the pointy end of races.
Hopefully Lopez and co will be at the Tour of the Gila.
"But waar is quick-step huh" LR throwing in some cycling slang.
SUUUUUUUUUUPERMANNNNN
I feel like bernal should've told ganna to go after MAL earlier, Maybe it was just too steep or he was recovering, but if he made it across when the gap was smaller and sat on the back of lopez, lopez may have eased up to allow bernal to catch back on or at least get time back.
It’s Ganna struggling here. Bernal was playing super domestique. Maybe he should latch onto superman, inducing him to slow down.
Hi Lantern, congratulations for your clear analysis of the stage. It's easy to imagine the final ranking full of climbers, but wait... what's a pistard like Filippo Ganna doing in second place? (taking into account that he carries - uphill - at least 15 kg more than the heaviest climber). Ganna can be compared to Wout Van Aert, physically speaking. But what about athletic performance in an uphill race? Do you think Filippo will be able to show us spectacular performances in the future like Wout?
great time to attack for Lopez and yeah he has had that way on these types of climbs for a number of years now, proving that at high altitude he can win and deserves a contract in my eyes
"He deserves a contract" it has never been in doubt that he isn't a good rider. His linking with a doping doctor and lying about it to his team is what got him likely fired. He's one of the most gifted riders but if we sum up his history, it also shows he's an unreliable rider that:
- got into a fight with a cycling fan
- said dumb unnecessary things in the media about Movistar (prior to his transfer)
- the Vuelta Movistar incident
- linked to a doping doctor and lying to it to his team
Due to that I'm not sure if "deserves" is the right term. He's a legit world tour gc man and climber. But he's a liability who's ill tempered and linked to doping.
Him riding for Medelin has the downside that he won't be competing much in HC competitions and likely no world tour at all. If he proves that he can go without much controversy a year long though. He'll likely gets picked up again.
I'm not so sure he has a personality that allows him to be self critical about his continues bad behaviour.
Miguel Angel López “never tested positive for drugs or doping”. Juiced to the gills.
How long did Bernal hang onto the favorite group at the end?
He finished 4th only two seconds behind Higuita.
5:30 classic track rider position
I remember Remco doing something special here a few years ago, amazing looking part of the world.
Don’t like handlebar grip, just seems like an extra effort. Bernal contributes a little bit more at that moment when Pipo needed it most and this would’ve been closer.
Congratulations to Superman López. The Best.
Crazy seeing simmons and Remco dropped like that on a pretty flat climb. 🤯
Es una subida no tan dura pero bastante larga y con altura como le gusta a los colombianos subidad de 50 km para meter un ritmo fuerte y q desgasta en Europa es diferente son rampas cortas pero duras
There’s a big pb with the motorbikes here
Its funny hat Lopez rides for a Columbian CT team now :D
what do you expect? it's the usual first quarter strong lopez and when it comes to grand tour he'll like stand 7-10mins far behind the gc winner at the end of the day lol. BERNAL LOOKING GOOD THOUGH! hope he comeback to form on the tour
Anyone stumped why WADA is only banning Tramadol in 2024? and UCI still allowing hyperbaric chamber altitude training? 😊
A lot man love L to L. Lantern to Lopez.
Wait, Oscar Sevilla is still racing? Wut??? o.0
Desde hace 10 años gana todo en Colombia ☠️
Remco doing a few Intervals. Always good to Los Colombianos bossing the front 👌☘️
I was thinking the same thing. Muy importante race for Lopez, early season training for Remco.
Wait, why is Gannas position illegal? He is grabbing the handlebar
Because it looks funny. It's less about safety and more about not wanting the public to think someone has an advantage. Graeme Obree.....
Can't have fore arms on handlebars with hands in front not really on handlebars. It was close.
Lopez’s doctor working wonders 👌
Wait for it, I think that we are going to see the Remco prophecy not come to fruition.
No need to read too much into it. Everyone is just doing their drills in a race except MAL
are we not going to see superman lopez in biggest races this year now that he is on this colombian team?
Why is he without team?
Remco evenepoel just doing enough in climbing stage, and should be a factor in flats.
How the fuck no WT team picks López up?
Wait, Babyface Sevilla is still riding? Isn’t he pushing 50? Didn’t he get busted at least once?
Ganna position's a no-no -- this is no diff than resting forearms, slow access to brakes, less control of bike..... according to the sock police
Remco dont have to prove annything annymore, he is smarter, he is still building up his boddy for the big confrontations. There is no reason to go to the maximum in this time of the year. He have plenty of time to build up his piek !
Remco is there to make somme fun and test his condition
Why do they just toss their bottles? Is there really no way for them to collect them as they go?
I think the street-cleaning crew will pick up the trash 🗑.
They have designated zones to throw them so they can be cleaned up, otherwise they get fined if they throw them elsewhere
@@ryanwells2495 Unless they toss them to a spectator, which was a mid season change to the rule
@@ryanwells2495 That's good to know - I wasn't aware of that. Thanks!
you know something is sketchy if even the crooks of Astana ditch you ….
Exactly!

I'm new to watching professional cycling. You seem like you know a lot about it, and it would be nice for you to do 'Pro Cycling 101' series. It would help me, possibly others, and you might get blessed by The Algorithm.
“Astana absolutely SUCKS” - Miguel Angel Lopez
Almost a superhuman effort by Lopez. To say he admitted to not doing too much training it's a great ride 💉😂
So Remco lost about 1min still seems to have no weakness he ticks the high altitude box now too.
Paves y altitud
This is remco building up stamina. Once he builds his base and starts training for GC... breakout year for remco is what I think
No shushing ? He had one job...
Let's see what remco can do in the giro but I think he won't be able to win it...
I personally think MAL is more likely to get back to WT than Quintana because there's basically little room for debate with Quintana's Tramadol result and I doubt a team would pick him up now. With MAL worst case scenario is far worse than that (I assume he could be criminally prosecuted for his links to the doping doctor) but on the other side of things if he is acquitted of any involvement maybe a few teams might approach him.
seeing the amount of saddle that sticks out from the back of some of the pros almost hurts. Any mortal would have huge saddle pain, but those guys are putting out enough power that the weight on the saddle is probably very low.
Ganna 3rd wheel - not in the draft with those two in front of him
He's Ganna win
ptorur
Lopez so underrated
😂He’s not underrated. He’s toxic.
first
The Doctor that Lopez was tied to has given a declaration that cleaned Lopez's reputation and name by saying his connection with him was based on nutrition..... So I believe he will get a contract soon
I don't know why everyone is so surprised that Lopez won. Everyone has been too preoccupied with the seeming showdown between Remco and Bernal to realise or see that Lopez has put forward some MASSIVE rides in the past few months. He has KOM some serious climbs on Strava in the past 2 weeks. Eclipsing all records.
He’s s doing like Caleb Evans: training for the early season and beating everyone there while they are all starting their season and prepping for the grand tours and classics.
@@frankburn6312 let's not forget this probably will be one of (if not the only) event Lopez will be able to ride with quality WT riders. It's now or never (even if many say his career is over in the WT)
Good. Talent needs to be put in it's place every now and then so it doesn't become arrogance
Nothing worse than divas.
Again that arrogance bullshit! Remco said it was a pretty dumb move. Let him be!

@@kiyaleelevyrunaya9495 Not at all. Use better words if you meant something different.
@@christiantermont4281 it's pretty obvious and straightforward. The issue here is you and your habit of assuming things. Not me or my comment.
@@kiyaleelevyrunaya9495 Not much to assume here. In your opinion, Remco is a diva that albeit talented needs to be put in “it’s” place.
Ganna tries to win a mtn stage. Wtf? 7% isn't crazy steep but still.
The average was 4-5%, 7% was the steepest (and only such) km. Ganna has done well on this climb everytime he did it.
is Remco really the bonehead that he appears to be?
Astana have lost out on a genuine grand tour winner based off speculations. What a mistake…
"Speculations" lol
Lopez isn't clean
If he can stay on his bike and don't crash and have a outburst and retire
I take it you mean Grand Tour stage winner? He doesn’t have the minerals to win outright.
Lopez will never win a grand tour
