    brother just wanted to say you saved me today. I was doing curls today and I heard a jiggling. then I went in to rows and a screw fell out, then on the next set a washer fell out. I thought I was out an adjustable dumbbell because I don't feel safe with screws falling out. anyway, googled "fix screws falling out of adjustable dumbbell" and your video showed up. rather than dropping another $400, I just spent an hour watching your video. Appreciate you from Toronto, Ontario Canada. Happy new years!

      Man oh man, Daniel, I feel like I am experiencing déjà vu. I'm not sure if I replied to you...lol. I've got so many candles burning at both ends that I can't recall if I did. I'm glad the video helped you protect your investment. Definitely consider thread locking those screws if you haven't already. Belated Happy New Year to you too! Cheers, Joe

      Thanks D...I know this may sound like a broken record to folks who have been following me for some time now, but none of the progress that I've made since the days of my very first fixes would have been possible without the support of customers like you. I'm just glad to be able to help. Stay safe and have a happy 2022!

    Hey Joe, my 560 are stuck at 60lbs. I tried the wood skewers method from your other vid, but still can’t get the handle to turn. Before trying to disassemble vertically with all the plates attached, I tried the silicone spray method and it works!
    Small squirts (CRC heavy duty silicone lubricant) into each corner of the “60” window, and it turns immediately. Once I can remove the handle at “5”, I squirted a tiny amount on each holes on the plastic selector disc. Hopefully this would prevent it from sticking again. Hopefully this adds to the knowledge base. Thanks again for your very instructive videos!

    • @AverageJoeInnovationsLLC
      @AverageJoeInnovationsLLC  Рік тому

      Sweet, glad to hear that worked. I would not have thought that simple lubricant would improve anything because most of the internals are plastics which generally slide well. But you're about the 4th or 5th person who has let me know that they have successfully used lube to free up a stuck assembly. So it's pretty safe to say that under some circumstances, lube might be the only thing the 560 needs. Thanks for sharing your success with that method. Cheers, and happy holidays!

    I watched your last vid on the 560 where you spoke about the release button. You had 5 bearings and springs laid out there. Threw me for a loop when I disassembled mine and only had 3. Where did you come up with the 2 extra bearings and springs? Just wondering. As it turns out I finally found this vid after I fixed mine but I'm still glad you did it, thank you!

      Hi Jonathan. I do these videos in one take with no edits...so sometimes there are errors. You'll usually find my corrections in the video descriptions (I believe you need to expand the description to see it). I typically catch the errors during playback and just write a correction after I upload. Sorry about the confusion man. In the video above I show the correct number of bearings. I'm glad you got yours squared away.

    I just got a new set of 552’s and it looks like they updated the locking pins on the plates from pot metal to maybe a stainless steel, I tried a magnet on them and it only seems to stick to the rivets. They also no longer come with the “do not drop” warning stuck to them although it does specify it in the owners manual as well as not using them to support your body weight as stated in previous videos. Possibly a 552 v3?

      Very interesting. If you have a couple minutes I'd love to see a close up photo of the tabs on your weight plates: joe@averagejoeinnovations.com. I hope they did upgrade them. One of my Series 2 pairs was purchased late 2021 and they were still the same. Not sure why they'd remove the stickers though unless they were just absent on yours. Most of the adjustables on the market aren't designed to be dropped. With their adjustability comes fragility. Actually, if you could take a few photos of the empty handle from different angles I'd love to compare to all of mine. Thank you for letting me know.

    I love this video. Is it the ball barrings that would cause the handle to not want to turn?

    • @AverageJoeInnovationsLLC
      @AverageJoeInnovationsLLC  2 роки тому

      Hi David. I can't rule out some sort of interference from one or more bearings. I just think it's unlikely unless a bearing somehow came loose and wedged itself somewhere internally. Like a rock wedged in a snowblower auger preventing it from spinning. I just don't think that would occur under normal operation.
      My first guess would be something going on with one or both locking pins such that they are not disengaging the internal assembly to allow it to rotate.
      The crazy thing about all SelectTechs is that sometimes disassembling and reassembling them fixes gremlins that may not be obvious. It would be worth the time to just disassemble, inspect and reassemble that handle. A few months back someone sent a 560 handle to me and it ended up being a locking pin issue, if I recall there was also debris up inside preventing one of the pins from working properly.

    any tips on removing the hex bolt on each end? I have tried everything including an impact driver and the thing will not come loose. I also sprayed liquid wrench on it too

    • @AverageJoeInnovationsLLC
      @AverageJoeInnovationsLLC  5 місяців тому

      Hi, Mr. G. Just so I am clear about what you're currently dealing with, do you mean the little hex cap screws on the ends of the 560 handle in the video above ? Or are you removing the hex bolt/nut from the end of a Bowflex SelectTech 552? I only ask because a couple people in the past have asked me questions, but on videos for a different model of SelectTech than what they own.
      I've not yet seen an end screw on a 560 jammed on so tight that even an impact won't remove it. That's crazy, but not surprising because I have seen it on 552s. It's as if they're assembling these things with impact tools at the factories and frequently over-tightening.
      With a 552, removing the end nut/bolt requires sockets on both ends of the dumbbell to keep the shaft from spinning. On a 560, that *shouldn't* be necessary. The dumbbell shaft *should* be locked in position unless something else is wrong with the handle. If I were to encounter a ridiculously tight end screw on a 560, I'd probably not use my T-handle hex wrench shown in the video. Instead, I'd mount a hex bit in a fairly long breaker bar. Have one person hold the dumbbell and another put some weight into the breaker.
      There may be just enough play in the 560 handle that it defeats the effectiveness of the impact wrench by absorbing the strikes. With a breaker bar you'll apply constant force with none of the bounce. My biggest concern would be whether that force would be enough to cause a failure of the locking button at 18:26 or the plate at 20:28 in the video. I can't imagine that it would, but anything is possible.
      Cheers,
      Joe

    Hey Joe. two of the discs are broken in my 560's. No parts available from Bowflex. Any idea where to get replacement parts?

    • @AverageJoeInnovationsLLC
      @AverageJoeInnovationsLLC  5 місяців тому

      Hiya, Ed. Sorry to hear about the discs. As far as I am aware, there are no replacement parts available from any aftermarket supplier. Whole handles were available from Bowflex at one time, but I don't even know if they still offer those now. That pretty much leaves 560 owners with one option--used whole dumbbells or handles. Handles rarely pop up for sale without the weights, but even if you find one you'd be buying into something that may itself fail after a short while.
      You could have a shop fabricate discs, just as I originally did several years ago. But, even if you were to design them yourself, as I did, the fab work for one-offs is typically costly.
      Sorry, man. I wish I could be of more help. I expected this to eventually happen with the 560s. I hate to see them end up in landfills, but I chose to stay away from making replacement parts for them. Mostly because I have limited capital that's already spread thin across a bunch of products, and I lack the bandwidth to provide adequate customer support for a relatively complex installation.
      Cheers,
      Joe

      Hi, Be. Sorry about the delayed reply. I was away on a trip for 5 weeks overseas with limited internet access. I'm back in the States now and playing catch up with filling orders and answering questions.
      You may have already figured out a solution, but if you haven't yet please tell me which bolt(s) you're referring to. If you mean the large end bolt located directly under the cap with the logo, it may be stripped if it just spins freely now after tightening it. In this case, if you can somehow pull the bolt free (maybe using long nose pliers) you may be able to chase the threads with a tap and insert a slightly larger bolt. Shoot me an email: joe@averagejoeinnovations.com and I'd be happy to help offline. Please note that it may take me a few days to reply while I continue to play catch up with my backlog of orders. Cheers

    Do you know the specifications of the screws that sit right above the handles? Mine have disappeared...

    • @AverageJoeInnovationsLLC
      @AverageJoeInnovationsLLC  2 роки тому

      Hi Doug, I don't know the spec of those screws. If I had to guess, they're likely M2.5 countersunk hex, fine thread, about 5-ish mm thread length, or very close to that spec. Do you happen to have any of the nuts to which those screws fasten? Are your handles currently assembled? If you have a mom and pop hardware store nearby it'll be the place to go to match the thread on those nuts.

    Man I wish I could find metal versions of the weight selector disk... The plastic tabs on mine were basically gone thus deeming the handle un-adjustable... $150 after taxes for a replacement handle from Bowflex as they do not sell the disk alone

    • @AverageJoeInnovationsLLC
      @AverageJoeInnovationsLLC  10 місяців тому

      Hi, Howie. I thought about manufacturing them a couple years back. They're a little bit more tricky to manufacture than the 552 discs, but that's the "easy" part. My major concern was (and still is) the amount of customer support that would potentially be required due to the complexity of the installation for the average consumer. In the early days of my 552 kits, I regularly spent 1-2+ hours on video calls with some customers who weren't as comfortable with doing their own repairs, even guided by detailed installation videos. And the 552 is much easier to work on than the 560.
      Typically, DIYers have no problem with disassembly/reassembly, but I lack the bandwidth to provide in-depth support to a large number of customers who may not feel confident enough to tackle such an upgrade. Thankfully, these days 99.9% of 552 and 1090 customers complete their installations with little to no phone support from me. I'm not quite sure why. Perhaps more are just willing to give it a go on their own guided by my videos.
      The other challenge is demand. I receive very few requests from 560 owners. Perhaps a dozen in 4+ years. Not enough (yet) to justify the level of effort required to develop and manufacture upgrades. That may change as the 560s continue to age, especially given the lack of support from Bowflex. I would suggest, don't chuck those 560s just yet. Once I get through my 2024 to-do list, I may very well revisit the 560 and see if I can do something to help you all continue to get use out of that investment. As more people learn about my 552/1090 upgrades, more 560 owners may express their need for similar support. Cheers, Joe

      @@AverageJoeInnovationsLLC I totally understand where you are coming from. I was watching your video to learn how to disassemble my dumbbell and when I saw what the issue was I was bummed as it wasn't just debris caught in the mechanism.
      I figure if I have another failure, I may just find a used set of 1090s or 552s and order an upgrade kit for those. I'll hold on to the 560s as long as my wife allows, lol! It's a shame there is so little support on these 560s. Its truly a shame that bowflex would make that disk out of plastic, perhaps why they discontinued the 560s...
      Appreciate the reply!

    Hey joe should I be greasing or doing any kind of maintenance on these 560’s ?

    • @AverageJoeInnovationsLLC
      @AverageJoeInnovationsLLC  2 роки тому

      Hi DJ, technically, it isn't necessary. You could try spraying a plastic-safe lube up into the crevices that you can reach, but most of the internals aren't accessible from outside the dumbbell so the lube isn't really going to reach much. A couple people claim that spraying lube in this way did help. I believe it's more perception than a measurable difference. I'm not sure any of them have even had the handle apart to see how it functions internally.
      Although there are a number of contact points inside the handle, much of the assembly is locked into rotation together as a unit. I suppose you could disassemble the handle, clean the components and add a dab of plastic-safe grease to each ball bearing. I haven't bothered with it. I think the biggest enemy for a handle like this is dirt/debris. I could see how a build-up of debris inside the handle would affect its operation. If you're using them in an environment where this might be an issue, or if you've had them for ages now, or purchased them used from someone without knowing where they've been kept, a disassembly and cleaning certainly wouldn't hurt. If you need me to clarify anything I just wrote, let me know.

    • @AverageJoeInnovationsLLC
      @AverageJoeInnovationsLLC  8 місяців тому

      Hiya, Cash. My first question is if the weights are currently stuck in such a way that when you put the dumbbell in its base, the grip will not twist to release the weights. If that is the case, then the first thing I would try is this trick:
      ua-cam.com/video/49SiQAmeg-I/v-deo.html
      Otherwise, I would do the teardown exactly as shown in the video above with the plates still on the dumbbell. And just be careful along the way since the plates will come loose as the discs do. Cheers, Joe

      @AverageJoeInnovationsLLC  5 місяців тому

      A couple people who viewed my other 560 video (ua-cam.com/video/49SiQAmeg-I/v-deo.html) claimed that they fixed a stuck handle by spraying lubricant up into the recess where the locking button is located. That *may* help for minor sticking. Otherwise, I recommend disassembling the handle as I do in the video above to inspect the internal parts. A component may have failed or become dislodged in a way that has jammed the grip.

    • @AverageJoeInnovationsLLC
      @AverageJoeInnovationsLLC  Рік тому

      Hiya Aiden, if you search my channel for my other 560 video, you could try that technique first. And if that doesn't work, I recommend using the video above to disassemble the handle and inspect the parts. Some people claim to have used lubricants to free up the sticking, but I suspect that's a temporary solution as the design itself doesn't really require lubricant in and around its locking pins. Hit me up at my email joe@averagejoeinnovations.com if you have more questions since I don't log in to UA-cam often. Note that it may take a couple days for me to reply if I'm super busy.
