FitBit sleep prediction: scientific test (full year)!

- FitBits and other wearables say they can predict your sleep, but how accurate are these predictions?
To put that to the test, I wore both a FitBit and a professional scientific encephalography (EEG) device to bed for a year on a weekly basis.
I compared the predictions of the FitBit to the professional EEG device, and in this video I present the results.
I also made a video that describes in more detail how these devices work, and what sleep stages are. You can find it here: • FitBit & EEG: how do t...
This comparison is part of a larger project where I spend over 11 hours a week tracking everything in my life. If you'd like to know more, please subscribe to my channel for updates.
Notes:
- I am not trained as a sleep expert. What I describe in this vlog, I have learned by talking with specialised scientists and reading scientific papers about the subject.
- For this comparison I used a FitBit Charge 2. However, I also started wearing the updated FitBit Charge 3, which claims to have better sleep prediction. I will make a vlog about that soon.
- One reason the FitBit predicts more awake time, might be because when sleep is scored with an EEG device, you have to be awake for at least 90 seconds before it is scored as "awake". With the FitBit, this can be as short as 30 seconds. This makes it more likely that the FitBit predicts more time awake.

FitBit vs Science: can a FitBit predict your sleep? I put it to the test for an entire year!
Dude! This is some really good work. This is actually worth publishing properly I'd say
Thanks Dillon! We are going to publish different aspects of the larger study, and it might even be a good idea to also include a paper about the accuracy of consumer sleep trackers indeed! Have a great day :-D
@@TheQuantifiedScientist Please share when it is finished I'd be super keen to see the results

I’m an engineer and crunching data is something I do quite regularly at work. Stumbling upon your channel is probably the best thing that’s happened to me on UA-cam. Thank you did these detailed analyses and I hope you continue this GREAT work through your life, helping others on the way.
So glad I found this youtube channel
Thanks so much!
Thanks for providing such high quality data!
So in summary, FitBit was 73% accurate at correctly identifying the 4 sleep stages. Of the 27% that it misidentified, the vast majority (25%) was during the following cases: light sleep misinterpreted as deep sleep (9.2%); deep sleep misinterpreted as light sleep (2.1%); REM sleep misinterpreted as light sleep (3.9%); light sleep misinterpreted as REM sleep (6%); and light sleep misinterpreted as awake (3.8%)
Holy ..dudee you're the best!!! Your channel needs more recognition! A LOT MORE!
Wow, thanks! This video is actually my first real youtube video I made. I hope you like some of my newer ones too!
Most underrated channel, simply brilliant content
Thank you for committing an entire year to conduct this study. Awesome work.
This is really awesome data!!! I am surprised that you are not having 1000000000 views yet. Thank you much for the review!!!
Woooow! Such an amazing work man! I was wondering if my smartwatch was doing a good job and thanks to your study, I can sleep well, knowing that the data is pretty far. Thanks a lot for this!
I'd like to say that I really appreciate your efforts. Thank you so so much.

Such an amazing study! Great job, really interesting to watching and listening to you! Thanks
Amazing work! Loved the confusion matrix.
Thanks for the comment! Really appreciated!
Boy, you are incredible! Your video is soo good and your effort is so consistent. Besides the well thought approach, which is incredible, your cleverness and compasion are of admiration because this video will help people like me, with insomnia, choose a device that is easy to wear and accurate, to some extent, as you presented. The data is useful when taking some medicine, to see the effect as well as predicting how many hours we have to sleep to compensate the lack of sleep from the night. So yes, the data is helpful in improving the sleep. Thank you for you existance! 🤗🙏❤
Fantastic video and explanation... amazing that you did it for a full year to get some solid data. Thanks for your hard work and putting it all together into such a useful video :-)
Amazing video!!!! Congratulations for your great work!!
Well done. Ambitious and presented clearly. Thanks a bunch!
Love your videos! I have had a Fitbit for years but just recently got serious with tracking my sleep. I was so curious how accurate it was. I’m completely ok with the 73% accuracy for 2 reasons. 1. There is no way I am ever going to obtain or wear a proper monitor like you had, and 2. I am only using this to improve my sleep . And I have! I notice the nights I eat right before bed my sleep is MUCH worse! I’ve also noticed I have better sleep when I walk at night. This is a totally fun experiment! I am now making sure I drink enough water, turn off my screen at least 1/2 hour before bed (aiming for 1 hour) not eating 4 hours before sleep, and trying some breathing/meditation before I sleep. I’m like a kid at Christmas not being able to wait to see what my sleep analytics look like and tweaking things and keeping a journal to see how much I can optimize sleep. Sleep is a pillar in the health of our bodies and brains so any way we can improve it is a plus for me!
Great work. It is great to see such a dedication for a video.
Thanks JC! Have a great day!

This channel is life!
Your videos are incredible, they put other UA-cam videos to shame.
One piece of feedback:
The first-line treatment for insomnia is CBT-I, and a key principle in CBT-I is to restrict your time in bed. You don't want to spend significantly more time in bed than you spend sleeping, because then the bed becomes a cue for wakefulness.
I noticed that in this video and the previous one, you suggest spending more time in bed. It might be worth reconsidering the wording there since spending too much time in bed seems to be a common pitfall of insomniacs, and insomnia is such a pervasive problem?
Thank you for sharing this world-class content.
Thanks for your work, we need it!
I find them very useful for confirming what causes me to have bad sleep. It also allows me to know when I'm likely to crash later in the day, as I can tell based on how poor my sleep was the night before.
So true! Now, I don’t use caffeine after 9 pm. If I drink caffeine after 9, my REM sleep gets tanked every time.
@@bonkersdonkers7381 9pm?! You shouldn't be drinking caffeine after, like, 3pm!!

Thank you for this interesting data. A way to make this a better study is to study more individuals and also by age groups to see how well the fitbit sleep tracker compares with EEG. Better still compare fitbit with medical polysomnography.
Thank you so much for your tests. Subscribed!
Are there any trackers on market that worth use?
Great video! Very informative
Thanks for the compliment Jack, really appreciated.
Thank you so much for doing this video. I am currently suffering with sleep related issues and after 2 sleep studies I just don't fall into any of the "normal" categories. My sleep specialist suggested having a sleep tracker might help with a bit more insight, altho not 100% accurate, but to be used as a guide for regular information. The only part of my current fitness tracker that doesn't record my data is the sleep tracker... So at least you have shown me it is worthwhile for me to purchase a fitbit! I'm currently booked in for my third sleep study and have no idea how u slept attached to those wires for an entire year!! But thank you for doing so!
Hi Sian,
Thanks for your comment! I think a sleep tracker might indeed be useful. Though keep in mind that these trackers are being developed to track (more or less) "normal" sleep patterns. The fact that trackers like the FitBit use actigraphy (so basically your movement) and heart rate means they are inherently limited. If you really want to track your sleep well, an EEG monitor that records brain waves is indeed best. However those wires are a nuisance indeed! At the moment I used this device: hypnodynecorp.com/ , for my daily tracking. It is a small EEG monitor with 4 electrodes. this could be something to consider (though I am unsure about the pricetag). I have no affiliations with this company, but I (or my colleagues) need to run some analysis to say more about the accuracy of the device.
All the best with your sleep issues. Hopefully you'll get plenty of restful nights! And, stay safe with regards to the current Corona situation!
You might want to look into the Fitbit Charge 4 which is about to be released.
@@richlaue thanks for the tip! I did not realise they were releasing a new FitBit. This one also seems to include GPS, very nice!
The Quantified Scientist I bet you will buy the charge 4 in no time. If you go, can’t wait for your review. I would want to try the charge 4 with gps. I own a versa 2 but it track my arms movements even when I type.
Very interesting and very thorough, great job! I would like to ask your thoughts on your sleep test results from the EEG as compared to the "typical" ranges you mentioned. For example, your EEG had your awake stage at 1%, whereas you quoted typical around 10%. Similarly, your light sleep stage is typically in the 60% plus range whereas the typical number was 50%. So are your EEG results more typical or more unique due to your own personal physiology? Just comparing notes with you, definitely not overly critiquing you. Thank you.
Awesome channel. Keep it up!
Thank you Michael! Will do!

I have one biology related Q that has to do with stress, temperature, brain and brain processing health/power. I think you might be knowing or at least aware of it or probably can share some inputs.
Let me know if I can ask (or is there some specific platform where I can ask to you) ?

@@TheQuantifiedScientist thanks for that Rob 😊
This Q. has come over in past as well, and thought may be I could share here and ask you. It's completely fine if you are not an expert or don't have inputs.
I have noticed and found that during a physical activity or even in a non physical activity (doing strenous office work / research study), sometimes or often stress gets developed in the head and I have noticed that when you pour normal water (of normal temperature) over your head or body, the individual feels a little relaxed and better.
But what I found much more intriguing is the fact when one uses ice cold water post over your head or body post such an activity (due to which stress arose), the individual feels at bliss and much more calmed down compared to the case when normal water was used.
I exactly don't know if stress has to do something with head / body temperature and whether ice cold water is really a gd solution. This also reminds me of the fact that why some athletes use ice cubes to heal up their injuries faster, but don't know relation with that of brain activity - if it ice cold water affects brain activity in any way or does it help one to work better.
@@unkown.heisenberg Hi Jabru, interesting question! This is not my field of expertise, but I'd be happy to speculate. My first thought is that cold water is much more of a "shock" to the body than lukewarm water. It might be that the shock of the cold water forces you back into the moment, and to feel your body again, instead of being lost in the stressful situation. The moment of cold is of course followed by the comfort of warming up again, which might feel nice as well. Using ice for recovery of muscles I suspect of unrelated, but again, I am just speculating. If you have some kind of injury, ice can help reduce inflammation and swelling, and additionally athletes indeed use ice-baths for general recovery after strenuous workouts, though I don't know the science behind this. This is just my random collection of thoughts, and I'd be happy to hear yours! Have a great day!
Appreciate the amount of effort you put into these fine tests. Have you considered testing the Sleep Cycle app in a similar fashion? Perhaps not a year, but say a month or two?
Amazing video. I really appreciate your approach. 1 year of data might be even an overkill IMO.
Glad it was helpful! Haha, we are also using the data for other things :-D, so the year did not go to waste. Have a great day!

Wonderful work! Thank you very much for this comparison. I really like having data about my sleep even tho it might be not as accurate but ~72% compared to EEG seemed like a wonderful result. I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea. In using a CPAP it has brought a lot of improvements to my health. Adding a Fitbit Charge 3 with sleep tracking/rating it gives me a guideline to follow. My doctor agrees it is not 100%, but much better than not having any feedback. It has allowed me to see the advantage of various approaches and what their impact is - such as: regular bedtime, cutting down on blue light/screen time before going to bed, etc. It is not to be used to give a clinical view, but it definitely gives you feedback that is useful.
Hi Jeff, thanks for your comment. I am happy to hear that you are making improvements to your health and that self tracking is helping! Sleep well :-D
Very helpful thank you.
Glad it was helpful! Have a great day!
Great video and effort, thank you. One question about your note about fitbit vs EEG thresholds for counting "awake"... isn't the fitbit then more accurate for catching "microsleeps" that would be missed by the EEG? It would be interesting to see what proportion of the "extra" awake times are 90s... Thanks again!
Very useful, thank you so much for their amazing data and analysis. 73% am confident now :) It is not 25% , not 100%, its 73%. That is very useful to know. Detailed comparison was helpful to know that we might need to reduce rem and deep sleep by some % to get more accurate data for our own conclusions.
Awesome video! Thank you so much! I’d be interested in the Apple Watch 3rd party app reviews.

Great video. The most valuable feature of me that I want from a sleep tracker is a smart alarm to wake me while i'm in light sleep. Did u use something like this?
Hi Sunny, the Fitbit Charge 2 does not support this, but the Charge 4 should support this I think. I have never tried it though, so I cannot say if it works. I could actually check my data: for the last 3 years I have been recording how tired and happy I felt waking up. I could see if this correlates with my final sleep stage! Thanks for the idea :-)

Thanks for your compliment! I will do my best to test these :-D. I tested the Mi Band 3, which for steps seemed to be really good, but not so much for sleeping. Other people have commented that the honor band seems to claim good sleep tracking too, and is also not so expensive. Once I can test again, I will try to include the Mi Band 5! Have a great day!
@@TheQuantifiedScientist Thank you for your reply. I am looking forward to it!
Did you also record audio and video data? Seeing that the Fitbit could be registering various other readings and using those readings to alter the readings for whatever reason it seems to make sense? Such as tossing and turning, body temp, decibel levels could be sensitive in sleep state. Snoring? Or oxygen levels. Just throwing my opinion on it. Great job and diligent effort.
Hi Matthew, thanks for your ideas! I have video data for some of the nights, but not all. This is something I need to look into, but haven't done yet. I tried wearing a "normal" SpO2/oxygen monitor, but that wasn't comfortable. I did wear a FitBit Charge 3 many of the nights, which should have recorded SpO2 levels at the wrist from what I understand. I do have decibel levels as well and environmental temperature. Would indeed be cool to look at all of these! Thanks for the ideas and you compliment, really appreciate it :-)

Hi ! According to the picture, yes it is !
Is there any documentation of Fitbit’s sleep stage algorithm? I’m trying to figure out how it uses HR and movement to get 3 different stages??
Hi Conor, when i had a look a while back it seemed to be all proprietary. So i don't think we will find out how the algorithm works exactly... Not sure if they trained a model based on EEG data they collected, but that seems like the most straight forward approach. Cheers, rob
Grt work
Thanks a lot 😊. Have a great day!
Interesting. I think that the Fitbit overestimates my light sleep and underestimates my time awake.
Thanks for your time, to do this comparison. As for 73% in my opinion is not that great, but probably because I'm working with numbers 😁
Good that fitbit detects more deep sleep, because that means if you use fitbit to wake you up (not dureing deep sleep) it could rarely wake you up during actual deep sleep (because actual deep sleep is tracked correctly and even with some additional to be sure).
@Oana Cristina that is small problem for me (not detecting that you are awake).
Most importantly for me is for it not to wake me up during deep sleep :)
Thank you
You're welcome!
dude! thanks for this, can you do the same for other brands of sleep trackers? like samsung, apple and google. Of course not for a year, even a week could be enough to have an idea
Hi Francesco! You read my thoughts! Yes, this is exactly what I am planning to do somewhere at the end of summer/in autumn after the new Apple Watch releases. Have a great day!
The Quantified Scientist that’s great to hear. I’m pretty worried about my sleep and i’m recently trying out a samsung watch active 2 and it registers a lot less deep sleep than the fitbit did. That seems more consistent with how bad I feel usually when I wake up. Seems more accurate so far... but who knows :( I look forward to more of your work!
@@francescob.3019 Hope I can help! Sorry to hear about your sleep problems, hopefully they'll improve over time! I have to say out of all the videos I have watched I like yours the best. You explained clearly and in a numbers kind of way. Scientifically and with the whiteboard drawings helped me to understand clearly. Thank you. Also, I agree that we need to spend more time in bed. If I had a beautiful woman in my bed I would be glad to spend more time there. That is what I am missing, oh yea, and a smart watch.
I have trouble waking up and keeping my sleep rhythm. I wanted to use "smart alarm" feature. So I bought Hauwei Band 4 Pro, that has this "Harvard Medical School Certified", TruSleep tracking. It detects the length of my sleep correctly, but it turns out, that the "smart alarm" can only work without this TruSleep extended data turned on. Also it doesn't seem to work correctly after two weeks of testing. Considering that you have experience with Fitbit trackers, do you think their "Smart Alarm" feature is useful and working as intended?
Hi Johann! I think if it were accurate it could be useful. However, I think the devices are not accurate enough in most cases to reliably wake you up in the correct stage. I think it will work quite often, but it will also get it wrong sometimes. For me personally, I'd rather sleep 10 minutes more, and be woken up in the "wrong" stage a bit more often, instead of using the smart feature. In the morning we will not have any deep sleep anyway, so it is just a matter of REM vs light sleep. If you feel that this makes a big difference for you, than this feature might be helpful, though it will get it wrong sometimes :-). Just my thoughts, hope it helped in some minor way ;-). Have a great day!
I doubt if fitbit testing team actually did such an analysis 😂 the confusion matrix 👏👏this is how the testing should be done 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 but why 1year? Any reason?
Hi Harcha! Thanks so much for the compliment! So, no there was no reason. It is just that I happened to have collected that much data at that point. :-P
Pewdiepie doing sleep studies now?
Hi Kevin! Someone suggested I should be called PewDieScie (for science)
I bought my Fitbit recently because of the sleep tracker because I recently got interested in lucid dreaming. Do you have any content shedding some light into it? (Using the Fitbit to determine REM sleep to lucid dream...)
I just bought the Fitbit for the same reason. Did you have success using it to predict REM periods and induce lucid dreaming?
I have not watched the whole video however I am wondering if sleep accuracy varies between fitbit versions. I am looking at versa 2 and charge 4.
Hi Melanie! The Charge 3 performed similarly to the charge 2, and basically has identical sensors to the charge 4. So i expect the charge series to perform well
Great job! I hope you can help me. I know that they are not perfects but I would like to buy the best sleep tracker, can you help me?
Hi Tommasse, I just did a video on the Dreem 2 Headband, which seems to do pretty well: ua-cam.com/video/3JoxXVUB2Mo/v-deo.html. It is not cheap though, so depending on your budget, make sure it is worth it for you :-). Have a great day!
Smartwatch vs Science: How accurate is your sleep tracker?
I'd recommend changing the title to this instead. It's more appealing and mantains the information short and sweet.
Also, spot-on presentation my friend. Constant eye contact and smiling. Pretty welcoming =)
Thanks for your comment, these things really help! I'll look into changing the title this weekend! You're definitely right! However, I think the FitBit Charge 4 is releasing now, so it might be good to keep the words FitBit in there, so people can actually find the video. Thanks for the compliment, and it seems you're doing better than me on your channel, so good luck to you too! Enjoy the weekend, and stay healthy
@@TheQuantifiedScientist yeah, I've been researching for a college project and it seems the charge 4 is about to get hot right now =)
I think you don't need to actually keep the word "fitbit" in your title for it to pop up in search results. Your thumbnail, description and tags probably have fitbit all over them already. What I did to make sure people found my video was including multiple search alternatives in my description (i. e. fitbit charge 4, fitbit 4, fitbit charge 4 sleep, fitbit 4 sleep tracker), and it did the trick I think.
Your video has a lot of potential to be "blessed" by the recommendation algorithm, which is why I think the title I suggested could get you more views: everyone knows what a smartwatch is, but maybe not everyone knows what a FitBit is (I just heard about it for the first time yesterday, it seems to be more popular in the US).
Maybe informations like the smartwatch brand, "ONE YEAR TEST" (yes, all caps haha), a miniature of that 5:17 comparison or a miniature EEG graph could fit well in the thumbnail to compliment the title, these things don't necessarily have to be in the title to attract viewers, but are a solid way of creating interest and showing what type of content to expect inside the video.
I don't have a lot of experience with running a channel, but I do have a lot of experience with "what piqued my interest" and "what made me click" on a video. I used that experience once to make a decent tutorial on a subject no one had done before but that's pretty much it haha
Either way, your content's great. Big respect for your notes in the description too, that's some solid information. I'm not much of a youtuber myself, I just pay attention to things I look forward to in a video and sometimes, when needed, I'll apply that to one of my own :P
Stay safe and stay healthy! Have a nice weekend too :)
Thanks! What is your opinion on my latest sleep test video title? ua-cam.com/video/NYRq4ahPJ2c/v-deo.html Have a great day!

Hi Christina, thanks for your question. I do hope to test it at some point. However, Apple Watches do not come cheap. If there is an offer at some point, I might purchase one and test it.
Apple watched barely last a day, many use the night to charge.
you rock
Thanks :-)
My FITBIT indicates that I am awake about 1 hour per night. I have Restless leg syndrome - is it picking this up. It was diagnosed in a sleep clinic.
what is the most accurate band ???????
How the heck does this only have 3k views?
Hi Rodolfo! General lack of charisma and production quality ;-) ? But you're right, I need to fix this. So I did some research, and I found this video of someone teasing a duck with 100x more views: ua-cam.com/video/B6kOsxoS-_g/v-deo.html. I guess I need more ducks in my videos...?
But seriously, thanks for the compliment, and if you have any suggestions for future videos, I'd be happy to hear them. Have a good day!
@@TheQuantifiedScientist Yep, on my first channel I had myself made a video of Tony from GTA in underwear who catches a helicopter and it went 300k views. I may have suggestions but I don't think they matter: one should mostly meet the algorithm rules and users taste. As far as I cant tell, something fundamental is: speed and cuts, camera (which you have) and lights/colors.
But I think all of this is extremely difficult and you already deserve more! The duck is from 2011 so it's all a different world 😂
Oh you meant ideas for videos. I might have some. Like, this sort of scientific comparison offers a thousand of applications. But apparently, people are not-so-interested.
And finally, I only watched this because I'm a bit nerd and I have troubles sleeping and I just bought a Honor Band :)
@@rodolfoassereto7626 , thanks for your reply! I'll definitely try to make some improvements. And... too bad about the duck, I needed an excuse to get a pet in these lonely times ;-)
What about Xiaomi's Mi Bands?
Where can I buy the professional EEG? I record myself sleeping with a night vision camera, but I don't move while I'm asleep. I want to know more details about what I do when I'm asleep, but my night vision camera isn't helping much.
there are apps that can track your sound
