Gavin Francis’s talk about how he integrates compassions into practice is very interesting. I really enjoyed how he was able to mention both sides of being compassionate. He sheds light on how compassion can be good, but it also can be a factor to burn out in healthcare professionals. I believe a great way healthcare professionals can become more compassionate by diligently following the 4 four ethical principles of respect for patient autonomy, beneficence, avoid harm, and promote justice. These four ethical principles can provide a framework for healthcare professionals. Healthcare professionals can show compassion by respecting a patient right to make their own decisions about their care. Additionally, they can show compassion by prioritizing the needs and concerns of their patients. This is the idea of beneficence, and which includes mind, body, and spirit. These are just a few examples of how healthcare professionals can create a caring and supportive environment that ultimately leads to a more compassionate environment regardless of the situation. Gavin Francis mentions that there are instances where we as individuals want to judge or decide if a person is deserving of compassion. If healthcare professionals follow the ethical framework laid out by the four principles, there is no need to decide who does and doesn’t deserve compassion. Everyone is treated with compassion and as a result healthcare outcomes will improve.
