The Bripe video was a warning sign; we should have seen this coming.
It was the cry for help that we did not hear... 🤣
@UnjustifiedRecsat this point I give up, I kinda want one

The Bripe Video is an absolute masterpiece - Someone show the Bripe Video to Netflix and tell them we want videos like that! :-D
James, I’d like to propose that someday when we eventually meet, we both bring our Barisieurs and enjoy alarm clock coffee together.

He has the best hair
I'm still waiting for a "best meal to have coffee with" video, and the winner, obviously, being a delicious cherry pie.
@@jameshoffmann Have you tried yet the official David Lynch blend coffee?
What does James Lynch call his coffee? Coffee noir.
Thank you - thats where I've seen his hairstyle before!
I'm a bit concerned for your wellbeing given your brutal daily schedule. While the rest of the world sleeps, the alarm jolts you awake at 10 AM, and a heavy daily toil begins. Thank God you have the butler; nobody could face these early hours and this routine without such a basic level of support.
Seems he barely has an hour for meditation and Journaling, and did you see the ream of papers in that desk organizing tray? Untenable levels of stress.

A nespresso machine would probably be a better shout for this scenario
I feel like if this was at least half the price (and had a bigger mug) it would be great for students. You combine Your alarm clock with your morning coffee no need to go to the kitchen which gives you more time to get ready if you have a class at 9. The main gripe is that it's so expensive. You can get a teas made for £50.
Waking up like a backwards neanderthal is enough reason for me
Gotta be honest, I enjoyed that way too much. This was probably the most entertaining video about a product I wouldn't ever buy I've seen in my life.
To be fair: the bripe review comes a close second.
I love that the big cinematic production values ONLY come out for the weird coffee devices I would never buy, it keeps the channel from feeling gimmicky too often but is also such a smart way to grab viewers for what would probably be the least-viewed content on the channel otherwise, since these products arguably have the smallest target demographics.

Simple drip coffee makers that cost $30 or less often have an "alarm clock function". And if they don't, they have an "on" button which, with some careful side-table arrangement, you can press without getting out of bed.
It's the 21st century man, smart switches are a thing. Just turn it on and have your app manage the when (the app doesn't even mind if you think of it as your own personal butler). Bonus points for being able to turn it on while you're heading home, so you can arrive to a nice cup of coffee
@@CED99 Smart switches are incompatible with loads of devices. Often, one with simple on/off buttons rather than rotary switches don't work as they default to off.
Exactly what I was thinking. You can get a much cheaper machine that makes similar coffee, has a timer you can set, and lets you make more coffee.
Yeah my first coffee thing was a Mr Coffee that I bought a few months ago (I do use an Aeropress now), it was like $35 CAD and had said alarm function and if you do it right, it probably makes just as good coffee as this.
@@HeelBJC SwitchBot should solve that issue
This is a kind of experience i'm living for.
It really felt like rewatching a movie or replaying a game but with director/dev comments about production, conditions of creation and oversights that needed fixes on the spot. Really opens up a new possibilities and dimensions here.
Genius idea
"A weird coffee production" is oddly ironically descriptive of the entire channel and it's production. But i'm loving every bit of it
I wouldn't say that's ironically descriptive, I think it's accurate in a pretty straightforward way
@schumacherenator maybe it is both ironically descriptive and accurate in the most straightforward of ways. The level to which it is an apt description for James' vidoeos is merely too difficult for language to sufficiently describe it 😂
@@tayjeremiah9458 someone’s ate a thesaurus
@@tayjeremiah9458 this kind of deep channel introspection sounds like you took a nice walk and Briped.
@@krombopulosmichael6162 @Alexander Williams probably the latter, just heavy briped.
I've got one of these and while it's great fun, I just can't use it as intended: the truth is, when loaded and ready to go it makes my bedroom smell of coffee. And that creates such a strong "It's time to get up!" sense impulse that I just can't go to sleep. Also the milk fridge is a smidge too noisy for a bedroom gadget, for me.
What I end up using it for is making coffee after I wake up when I'm having a Sunday lie-in. If you're doing that you can keep the coffee in a sealed container until you need it (so it doesn't make the room smell like a café). That way I can have a half decent coffee in bed without tipping off the kids that we're awake.
This makes it a very expensive and niche solution to a problem I basically had to invent. So, no different from the rest of my coffee gear, really.
I appreciate this comment so much, Sam. This is the real world feedback we need.
It's really bad design that they didn't put a lid on the coffee. That would have fixed your smell problem.

Exactly! This thing looks like an accident waiting to happen. I don't know about everyone else but, after I woke up in the morning, I have less mental capacity than a zombie for about 15 minutes. Having a kettle of boiling water by my bed side would be a very bad idea.
@@ikhsanhasbi657 Yep, the whole coffee maker\alarm clock combo is not without merit imho (Though it would probably be cheaper to just connect a normal coffee maker to a timed outlet), but the design as it is looks spilly.
And hand lacerations from broken glass parts. I recall a decent Sage coffee machine with a timer was not much more than $350
‘full thickness burns’ made me wince. 😬
I would definitely forget it is there and swing my arm, accidentally spilling the water and breaking the glass tubing. 😬 Even if it was only in the kitchen that exposed glass would eventually break. If it is glass I will break it. 😕

This is freaking amazing to watch on an ultrawide monitor. Fits perfectly and except one video from mkbhd this is the second time I've encountered the aspect ratio on youtube! Totally does justice to the video.
When I was going to University, every evening, I would set up my little percolator on the floor next to my bed. I had a cup with a lid on it, and my milk and sugar would go into that. When the alarm went off, I would hit snooze, roll over, and plug in the percolator. By the time the alarm went off again, my coffee was ready, I poured it into my cup, stirred it, and I had coffee without even getting out of bed. It wasn't boutique coffee, but this was the early 1980's, before all that. I thought it was decadent, and it got me through school.
Me, too! A drip machine, but same routine.
Wow, you!
this newly added commentary is great idea James, gives definitely a reason to watch again but with completely new perspective, like documentary about the episode, love it!
This video is a thing of beauty
Surprised to see you here😂
Really glad to see you vocally expressing the usually internal thoughts of everyone who's ever had a turmeric shot.
Are they that bad? I just started on the cod liver oil shots, but I'll occasionally just eat a small bit of fresh tumeric just because it's delious (like a zesty carrot)... Could you eat the tumeric instead perhaps?

So I commented that I’d love to see your review of this, I actually went to uni with the designer and this was his final year project. It’s really interesting and cool to see how far it’s come and it’s changed a bit. The heating method seems different but looks wise it’s still kept the same aesthetic.
But you essentially said all the things I might have guessed. Expensive for what it is and not quite sure who it’s aimed at and coffee could be better. We all even made the teasmaid comparison 7 years ago at uni.
Just out of interest, what program was the designer in? I’m interested in coffee and would be curious to know their educational path.

Directors commentary was great, thanks for this!
Revisited this for the commentary-what a great idea!
When i lived in student accomodations i had a small moccamaster and a lamp connected through a power plug timer. Set it to go off 5 mins before my alarm. Already had the moccamaster and the lamp, and the timer cost me ~11 euros. Waking up to a lit room that smelled of coffee made the start of the day that little bit easier during the cold polar night.
I used to put the Moccamaster next to the bed, too. When the alarm went off, I hit the button on the coffee maker and the snooze and woke up 15 minutes later to an appreciated cup! :-) I still do that if I have to get up very early, e. g., for a 6 am flight (which has not been an issue this past year).
By your own rules you now have to review the butler and then give him away

hi! Not only was this fun to watch and did I learn things, but the director’s commentary was fun as well (and I learned other things!) take care.
I was given one of these as a gift. And for someone as caffeine addicted as myself, it is a life saver. I save the fancy coffee for when I have time to enjoy it, but for getting out of bed and getting the kids ready, this is a winner.
Scott, good afternoon. I watch your Tin House videos and enjoy them very much. And then I learn your coffee loving also beings you to The Hoff ! Small world on YT. All the best !
James, also in the target "can't be arsed to make coffee in the evening". Because a good vacuum mug will keep coffee well enough hot to be enjoyable. A while back I'd measured my Zojirushi mug, pre-warmed, 80C in at 10PM, 54C out at 8AM. Zoj mugs start under 30 gbp for the smallest ones (480ml), they seal *extremely* well so they're excellent travel mugs (can be thrown in a bag if locked), and they also works for cool liquids in summer.
And if you're using this thing you pretty much ARE making coffee in the evening, you've just got to grind coffee and fill the thing.
@@Yesterzine Good point, so you're saving 5-10mn in the evening (the actual brewing process) to have your room smell like a roaster's (which I guess you may enjoy), at the cost of being limited to the amount of coffee and water the barisieur holds, and the risk of having boiling water and glass on your bedside table.

I learnt how to make my perfect coffee with my £10 cafatiere after watching 'The Ultimate French Press Technique' & I've never been able to get the same satisfaction from any other method, despite spending a few thousand £ over the years on different coffee machines. To overcome the laborious task of making it in the mornings I bought a £30 salter coffee maker with a timer but I don't use it for its intended purpose; I use it only for the hot water & timer - I fill up the machine with water just before bed & put my freshly ground coffee in the recepticle, not the filter. This has changed my life and I wake up in heaven every morning. Sometimes the sound wakes me up before my (seperate) alarm which I set for 5 min after the machine has poured the water (it takes 4 mins), but I love the sound and just lying there anticipating. I press snooze on my alarm & then without leaving my bed I gently stir the crust and then chill or snooze for 8 mins before pouring my coffee - it's an ethereal moment which I experience every morning and never, ever take this luxury for granted x
That's not what I usually understand "the little death" to mean, although a purpose-built postcoital brewer sounds equally marketable

I mean isn't it just a perfect depiction of james hoffmann
First off, I love everything about this video. Second, that simply can't be what your hair looks like in the morning. Third, and most important 'miss' if this video, is all that prep, cost and expense for a too small of a coffee aside, how on earth do you clean it?! My kitchen is practically on the moon from my bedroom. The thought of carrying all the bits down for cleaning and back up later when dried is FAR more effort than that first cup would be worth.
Just loved how professional this was and yet still so honest! I was expecting this to be just one massive ad for Barisieur.
Agreed with all your points for the brewer!
Had one myself as a gift from my brother, but gave it back to him because of the not so great cup it produced, the inability to dim the clocks light (I like to sleep in darkness), the inability to brew without an alarm (the 5 min pre alarm brew woke me up lovely, the alarm is just jarring to wake up to).
Chuck in the fact it is a metal filter (not so many of the unhealthy heavy oils filtered out) and that drinking something so acidic and with so much caffeine first thing in the morning has shown, in studies, to not be a great way to start your day off for your mental acuity and general digestion.
There is a newer version that allows for you to steep brews, so likely better coffee.
For £350? I can buy some smart switches, a much better automatic pour over machine and a smart home device (google or Alexa) that will be much more convenient and programmable …at the cost of maybe not looking as Instagram friendly…so what

The Director’s commentary is super interesting - a worthy experiment!
I did buy this as one of the original Kickstarter’s. Similarly, I had low expectations in terms of coffee, which I bought for my love of the design. It is beautiful.

This is a masterpiece. A Gem. A true highlight in video production! All the little details, the affection to every second of perfection. This is *much more* than just a review, it is a cinematic masterpiece. Congratulations James, in a series of well-made and thought-trough videos you have reached yet another peak. A true pleasure to watch, thank you! I'm completely stunned after watching this!
The video review is, in fact, far better than the product. This should be a whole genre.
I picked up a Teasmade while I was doing my A-levels and I genuinely credit it for getting me the results that I did. However, I will say that as an adult I wouldn't find much use for the same kit. I also wouldn't pay closing in on ten times as much as I did for a beige bakelite brick (it really was a chonker) just to have cold milk to add in to my hot coffee.
As an aside, I cannot express how much joy it brings me to imagine James asking someone "So I'm being sponsored, and I want to spend all of that money on renting the fanciest, most ludicrous looking, brutalist design home set, and I want *you* to dress up as my butler."
Who would want to live in a brutalist house?

Cost less than a tenth of this unit, and is absolutely how I managed to get thru my senior year. I would have never put it bedside, tho-it clogged and overflowed WAY too often.
Still. I think there’s absolutely a huge market for the AWAKE COFFEE NOW crowd. Just…not at $500 a unit.

I bought a bean to cup de'longhi and a SwitchBot button presser, machine on at 6am so is warmed up for 7am double
This video was perfection! Removing the eye mask, and revealing the glasses.. hilarious in an understated way. Had to watch again while drinking an AeroPress this morning. This *is* how we all imagine him, after all.
I know right, I know that James has a standard, but sleeping with glasses under the blindfold.... That's..... Unique
This had a very Black Mirror feel. Will the alarm clock eventually turn on him? What is the butler doing to his coffee? Who was that blurry painting of? I hope there’s a second part.
Its a picture of zev siegl.
100% S1 Black Mirror. From the glass and concrete mansion to the tech ingrained in strange places to the... British. The plot would a guy that believes he's reviewing coffee gear for his UA-cam channel, but the butler sees him talking to a blank wall.
It has been established that James Hoffman sleeps with his glasses on and with the same care and finesse that he is famous for his coffee, so much that his lovely hair has not been rustled during his sleep
I wouldn’t have expected any less from our Coffe Lord
"And it's noisy. You're *gonna* wake up!"
Sir, I assure you that it takes more than an alarm, hot gurgling water sounds, and the smell of coffee brewing to get me to wake up in the morning.
I have the opposite problem. I'm a very light sleeper. The little beep it makes to when it turns itself on would wake me up most days, and the noise of the brewing would wake me on most of the rest. Basically, the only time the alarm would wake me would be if I'd gone to bed at 2am when I needed to be up at 7.
"if you just wake up and you are broken...", ha ! I love it 🙂
I seriously WANT to believe that this is James‘ real Home…
I did back this on Kickstarter, and mostly use it to make tea, rather than coffee - I definitely agree with James here, the coffee it makes is pretty unremarkable.
Waking up to a little tea, though, is quite nice :)
@UnjustifiedRecs Yup! For way too much money!
The inner thespian has finally reveled himself and we love it.
Regarding the machine its function could be served by a $15 coffee machine
-The asthetics and brewing mechanics are the only appeal I can see in it.
Agreed. Just put a regular machine near your alarm clock.
Throw in a smart switch and you get to wake up to your brew as well
@@yishunbrew or, you know, there are way cheaper machines with a clock and timer that will start grinding at the preset time....must be hell to wake up to that but at least the coffee is sub-par, too.
@@dushk0 😄 It could be pleasant if you enjoy distorted industrial music.
@@TuliTheUnruly LOL
Whilst I've learned much from you over the years James, for which I thank you, my favourite thing on this channel is everytime you ask yourself "oh why?!" in desperate incredulity. Absolutely priceless 😂
I liked the video. Thank you.
In order to drink coffee immediately after waking up, you can buy a thermos to brew coffee before going to bed, pour it into a thermos, as you wake up to drink coffee from a thermos.
These full cinematic Videos are so phenomenal! They tell a fun story, the music is fitting, a weird coffee person tells tales about a weird coffee produkt: What's not to love about this!?
Of all my UA-cam subscriptions, I get the happiest when I see a new one by James. This one did not disappoint. Funny! As far as the coffee maker, since many far superior electric drip coffee machines have clocks and timers, this thing is just a silly novelty item, probably given as a joke gift by people who can afford expensive joke gifts that probably won't even get used more than once.
A trifle let down that this wasn’t S1E1 of “Hoffmann after dark” but the content & delivery soon made up for it 😬
I'd love this! I'm one that wakes up and the thought of fresh coffee gets me out of bed. BUT, I love grinding and smelling fresh ground coffee in the morning. I even use a coconut/coffee face scrub I love it so much. For this price (likely more) I'd welcome the sound of a burr grinder to wake me up followed by the sound of dripping coffee to complete the process.
when i first saw this on morgandrinkscoffee’s channel, it struck me as something that would work more as an afternoon coffee break alarm rather than a morning wakeup one. seeing it here again that impression returns once more. my family takes afternoon tea almost religiously, and ever since we’ve been working from home, i’ve come to enjoy the little daily ritual too, especially since hours have become a little elastic in these non-visible times.
equipment aside, this is a gorgeous production, filming-wise, and the music !! the singularly most distracting element in a good way - it reminds me a lot of philip glass & i kept having to pull myself back to the content instead of listening to the music. please could you provide details of the piece, it will be much appreciated.
Omg this is the sexiest of premium luxury coffee living I've ever seen. James, you've found your element.
Together with the weber grinder!
