I've got one of these and while it's great fun, I just can't use it as intended: the truth is, when loaded and ready to go it makes my bedroom smell of coffee. And that creates such a strong "It's time to get up!" sense impulse that I just can't go to sleep. Also the milk fridge is a smidge too noisy for a bedroom gadget, for me.
What I end up using it for is making coffee after I wake up when I'm having a Sunday lie-in. If you're doing that you can keep the coffee in a sealed container until you need it (so it doesn't make the room smell like a café). That way I can have a half decent coffee in bed without tipping off the kids that we're awake.
This makes it a very expensive and niche solution to a problem I basically had to invent. So, no different from the rest of my coffee gear, really.

When the alarm went off, I would hit snooze, roll over, and plug in the percolator. By the time the alarm went off again, my coffee was ready, I poured it into my cup, stirred it, and I had coffee without even getting out of bed. James, also in the target "can't be arsed to make coffee in the evening". Because a good vacuum mug will keep coffee well enough hot to be enjoyable. A while back I'd measured my Zojirushi mug, pre-warmed, 80C in at 10PM, 54C out at 8AM. Zoj mugs start under 30 gbp for the smallest ones (480ml), they seal *extremely* well so they're excellent travel mugs (can be thrown in a bag if locked), and they also works for cool liquids in summer.

I learnt how to make my perfect coffee with my £10 cafatiere after watching 'The Ultimate French Press Technique' & I've never been able to get the same satisfaction from any other method, despite spending a few thousand £ over the years on different coffee machines. To overcome the laborious task of making it in the mornings I bought a £30 salter coffee maker with a timer but I don't use it for its intended purpose; I use it only for the hot water & timer - I fill up the machine with water just before bed & put my freshly ground coffee in the recepticle, not the filter. This has changed my life and I wake up in heaven every morning. Sometimes the sound wakes me up before my (seperate) alarm which I set for 5 min after the machine has poured the water (it takes 4 mins), but I love the sound and just lying there anticipating. I press snooze on my alarm & then without leaving my bed I gently stir the crust and then chill or snooze for 8 mins before pouring my coffee - it's an ethereal moment which I experience every morning and never, ever take this luxury for granted x

Just loved how professional this was and yet still so honest! I was expecting this to be just one massive ad for Barisieur.
Agreed with all your points for the brewer!
Had one myself as a gift from my brother, but gave it back to him because of the not so great cup it produced, the inability to dim the clocks light (I like to sleep in darkness), the inability to brew without an alarm (the 5 min pre alarm brew woke me up lovely, the alarm is just jarring to wake up to).
Chuck in the fact it is a metal filter (not so many of the unhealthy heavy oils filtered out) and that drinking something so acidic and with so much caffeine first thing in the morning has shown, in studies, to not be a great way to start your day off for your mental acuity and general digestion.
There is a newer version that allows for you to steep brews, so likely better coffee.

This had a very Black Mirror feel. Will the alarm clock eventually turn on him? What is the butler doing to his coffee? Who was that blurry painting of? I hope there’s a second part.

100% S1 Black Mirror. From the glass and concrete mansion to the tech ingrained in strange places to the... British. The plot would a guy that believes he's reviewing coffee gear for his UA-cam channel, but the butler sees him talking to a blank wall.

It has been established that James Hoffman sleeps with his glasses on and with the same care and finesse that he is famous for his coffee, so much that his lovely hair has not been rustled during his sleep
I wouldn’t have expected any less from our Coffe Lord

"And it's noisy. You're *gonna* wake up!"
Sir, I assure you that it takes more than an alarm, hot gurgling water sounds, and the smell of coffee brewing to get me to wake up in the morning.

I have the opposite problem. I'm a very light sleeper. The little beep it makes to when it turns itself on would wake me up most days, and the noise of the brewing would wake me on most of the rest. Basically, the only time the alarm would wake me would be if I'd gone to bed at 2am when I needed to be up at 7.

I did back this on Kickstarter, and mostly use it to make tea, rather than coffee - I definitely agree with James here, the coffee it makes is pretty unremarkable.
Waking up to a little tea, though, is quite nice :)

Regarding the machine its function could be served by a $15 coffee machine
-The asthetics and brewing mechanics are the only appeal I can see in it.

In order to drink coffee immediately after waking up, you can buy a thermos to brew coffee before going to bed, pour it into a thermos, as you wake up to drink coffee from a thermos.

These full cinematic Videos are so phenomenal! They tell a fun story, the music is fitting, a weird coffee person tells tales about a weird coffee produkt: What's not to love about this!?

Of all my UA-cam subscriptions, I get the happiest when I see a new one by James. This one did not disappoint. Funny! As far as the coffee maker, since many far superior electric drip coffee machines have clocks and timers, this thing is just a silly novelty item, probably given as a joke gift by people who can afford expensive joke gifts that probably won't even get used more than once.

I'd love this! I'm one that wakes up and the thought of fresh coffee gets me out of bed. BUT, I love grinding and smelling fresh ground coffee in the morning. I even use a coconut/coffee face scrub I love it so much. For this price (likely more) I'd welcome the sound of a burr grinder to wake me up followed by the sound of dripping coffee to complete the process.

when i first saw this on morgandrinkscoffee’s channel, it struck me as something that would work more as an afternoon coffee break alarm rather than a morning wakeup one. seeing it here again that impression returns once more. my family takes afternoon tea almost religiously, and ever since we’ve been working from home, i’ve come to enjoy the little daily ritual too, especially since hours have become a little elastic in these non-visible times.
equipment aside, this is a gorgeous production, filming-wise, and the music !! the singularly most distracting element in a good way - it reminds me a lot of philip glass & i kept having to pull myself back to the content instead of listening to the music. please could you provide details of the piece, it will be much appreciated.
