Nespresso seems to corner the “premium-mediocre” market for coffee.
Kind of like what Heineken was able to do for many years in the export beer market.
From a pure business standpoint it’s an enviable position, but yeah it’s pretty bad.
Basically enabling a certain consumer mindset creating an image that “*I’ve arrived* at coffee making”, whilst being the furthest away from it in meaningful reality.

There has to be an insentive to recycle beyond the environmental aspect. In Norway we pay an extra 50 cents or whatever for soda bottles, we get that back when we shove it into a recycling machine (they're in every shop basically). So when you have like four shopping bags full of empty bottles you go down there and cash in, you get just over 10 dollars back. It's a good deal and encourages recycling greatly, you have like homeless people or whatever searching bins for bottles, you have kids doing the same for some extra cash. There's actual value in an empty plastic bottle. Same thing could be done for coffee pods.

I bought a cheap positive pressure type espresso machine that works on the same principles as the pod machines. They use the same cheap pumps as those machines do. The fact that they have a real 51mm Portafilter fitted means they have a good seal and don't leak. Actually not a real portafilter, they are pretend ones, the manufacturers go to considerable trouble to hide the fact that they have positive pressure, and not straight through.
It also means I can buy my own coffee beans by the kilo. The cheap burr grinder was more expensive than the coffee machine. I get fresh beans, and fresh ground coffee, which means way better coffee than what I ever got out of a pod machine. The fact it's much cheaper doesn't hurt either. It's still not real espresso machine quality at its best, but if the coffee is not the best, it is at least consistently good, and I don't have to fuss. Still thinking of splurging out and getting a good one (read expensive) at some point.

I felt you kinda did him dirty on that one. James is quite a proponent on actual functional sustainability and improving the treatment of coffee growers.

      @@grahamb7947 Dear Graham,
In your comment, there seems to be some confusion on which entity ( federal government or individual state government ) holds the power to decide certain (sustainable) matters.
Germany is a federal republic consisting of a total of 16 federal states, Hamburg being one of them. (It gets more complicated because Hamburg also is what is called a "city-state", so it is both a city and a federal state. Out of the 16 individual federal states in Germany, 3 are so called city-states: Berlin, Hamburg and Bremen).
Between the German government (that is the federal government) and the individual federal state, there are clear rules on who can decide/pass laws on which matter. Mainly, there are three different scenarios:
      1) Exclusive competence by the federal government: for example on matters such as foreign affairs, currency, immigration etc.
      2) Competing competences: here both entities, federal government and individual state can decide/pass laws but both could claim precedent. For example, penal law, hospitality regulations, residency regulation etc.
      3) Exclusive competence by the individual federal states: here only the individual federal state (such as Hamburg) holds the power to pass laws and regulations. For example on matters such as: education, urban planning and development etc.
In my comment, I gave the example of the city of Hamburg passing a regulation directly affecting its city offices.
In this case, we can see Hamburg (the individual federal state) passing a regulation in its identity as both a city and an individual city-state.
Hence, this regulation only affects Hamburg and more specifically the offices belonging to the city/state government, think for example the majors office.
In your comment, you are referring to Germany (the federal state supposedly) deciding to phase out nuclear power plants (a currently highly debated topic) whilst potentially maintaining coal plants.
As you will see from my explanations above, one federal state passing a ban on capsule coffee pods and the federal decision on nuclear/coal plants can not be compared on a legal level.
An individual state might want to keep a nuclear power plant running but it might simply not be in its right to do so.
On the other hand, the federal government might be looking for a lifetime deal with Nespresso but could not go through with it because it would overstep its competences.
The federal government and the federal state governments also are not necessarily made up by the same parties or the same coalitions of parties, so to expect that both the federal government and the state governments would be/want the same thing can not work.
Funnily enough, there actually is some valid criticism regarding the coffee pod ban in Hamburg, maybe we can get to that next time!

French press, percolators, Moca pots, drip coffee, mason jar cold brew, on demand single cup machines to make a fresh grind when requested etc. there are lots of on demand coffee, I don't understand why these single cup machines with pods ever became a thing. They aren't really that much more convenient, the machines and pods are expensive. Its so strange, it only takes me 5 minutes to filter a jar of coffee in the morning (after taking an hour to make a dozen of them at the start of the week), or 3 minutes to boil a cup of water and a couple of minutes to brew in my french press.
There are lots of sustainable machines that don't have disposable parts, why do people buy these single use coffee pod machines...

Thank you for the video. Found it really interesting. I hope you ´re aware, that the biggest impact for a cup of coffee is the coffee by it´s self (mostly because of land use change) and than the use. So coffee is 50%, use about 20-23% and the capsule is under 10%. If you use a bean machine which uses normally about 8g coffee, it has about 20% worst impact than a capsule. So I don ´t understand why alway everyone makes single portion especially capsule seems so worst. I live in Switzerland and the recycling quote for alu capsule is over 60%. Germany about 50%. I wish someone would talk about sustainability who also deals with it. The only way to be sustainable is drink less coffee, use renewable energy and take the bicycle to go grocery.

Get a coffee maker with a built in grinder - the machine is more expensive than the nespresso ones, but that cost is quickly recouped when it comes to buying coffee. That way you get fresh ground coffee of your choosing - and you can pick the brand and roast which is best for you.

Recycling K-pods is a joke. The box tells you you have to individually empty them of coffee which is a lot of manual work. Having to reopen them and remove the lid and empty the coffee is even more work than a regulare reusable cloth filter or a reusable plastic filter machine. That prerequisite to recycle a single K-cup removes 100% of all the reasons to use a Keurig over a regular cloth filter or a paper filter machine, so even though I tried to recycle the K-cups, most of the times I just throw them in the trash, or use a reusable filter for keurig, which is again, more work than the regular k-cup so the entire point of using a Keurig is lost.

They might be more expensive up front but the coffee will taste better and it will probably be cheaper over the long term. The breville barista express is a pretty easy one to recommend as an entry level one since it comes with a decent grinder and doesn't take too long to warm up from off. It was around $500 the last time I looked for a friend but considering that burr grinders are commonly $100+ it's really not a bad deal to get started

TLDR: Why I like my Nespresso
For my family the biggest draw of the Nespresso vertuo is the ability to make espresso as well as full cups with only one machine that doesn't take up too much space (we have a small kitchen with limited counter space). Some of us like making our own drinks while others prefer a fast mug. We recycle all our pods and have only had a problem with the pods molding once. We usually use pods fast enough to fill bags before they get nasty. I despise companies that push the burden of recycling on to consumers but with Nespresso specifically it's so easy to recycle. We used to have a kureg and we bought supposedly compostable pods from PC. Turns out there was actually an inorganic plastic ring that made the whole product a lie. Overall I think it's the best option for us, for these reasons and possibly for others.

I almost got sucked into Nov 2022 Black Friday deals on Nespresso makers. In the summer of this same year it crossed my mind to research how many coffee pods are manufactured in a year. The number for the UK alone was astronomical. And so I also wondered where they all likely end up and if there are reusable pods available. I did find that Keurig has reusable washable pods for their machines but can’t say I found them for Nespresso. I then realized that while they are available for K cups using them undercuts the convenience of using a new pod each time. If you are going to refill a small fiddly reusable capsule for one cup - why not just load the much larger easier to handle and wash filter on a drip maker and make a pot of coffee? So of course reusables are not popular with the lazy DIYer. Plus there was a quick calculation of the cost of purchasing an endless supply of the coffee pods. Anyway after all of that I decided I was right not to follow my friends and family down the road of purchasing a Keurig or Nespresso maker - and then came Black Friday on Amazon. Lo and behold a Nespresso Vertuo maker on sale for about 40% off and bringing the high end brand name into the realm of affordability. I tapped - I read and for a moment almost purchased it feeling good about how impressive this would look on my counter. And then thank God I woke up and remembered I would also have to order and pay for coffee pods and - that was that - the dream was over and I once again realized how much better off I am continuing to use my 25 year old (still going strong) drip maker that owes me nothing makes more coffee at one time is less costly for me to use and has a far smaller impact on the environment especially as I have used the same wire mesh reusable filter for that entire 25 years.
