The ideal for car coffee is always - 'have the right equipment to brew it when we pull for a stop midway through'. Any in-drive crockery sounds like an accident about to happen, which is probably why no one thought to pursue improvement on the in-car brewer design.

@@mercury6765 Yeah, funnily I don't like it that much, compared to other Astons it kinda has muscle car vibe and a V8 too. My 70's British car would be an E-type. We used to have a 94 Sovereign with that same engine, the 4 L straight six. Purred like a happy kitty and never had any problems. Unfortunately a speeding mini van totalled it.
Aeropress and jet boil on the trunk or as you brits say “on the boot” is the fast way to make coffee anywhere with your car. I’ll admit definitely a bit difficult while driving.

I had an in-car coffee maker in around 1989, and it looked almost identical to the one James tested from 1979. I used to drive to London, which took about an hour (on a good day) and it took that long to heat a small cup of water to a usable temperature.
Pulling up in that Aston with that "Hey Baby" nod instantly took me right back to the 70's!!! Ahhhh the memories... I was 16 in 1979, and I think I got that very same creepy nod every day back then. First ad I didn't click through in forever. I actually called my wife over to watch the ad just because of your gray mustache. This video was great fun.
In car coffee may have come a long way but I'll never switch back to cartridge razors, switching to a double edge with gillette blades and actual shaving soap has made my shave so much closer with none of the irritation of scraping 5+ blades across my face over and over. Minor life changer.
I don't even own a car and have no need for one of these devices, but this was still one of my favourite James Hoffmann videos ever. Love the aesthetic!
Shoulda called it “coffee makers in cars making coffee”. ;-) For my money, time, and tastebuds I would brew a FP and put it in a zojirushi. The Zoj is incredible at holding the head and the heavier body of a FP tastes delicious out of a thermos. PO can be good too, but nothing with milk (yuck).
Firstly, thanks James this was hilarious. Second, I’d go camping/road trip style and use my Biolite kettle with my aeropress. Could also use a gas stove for quicker results. No need for an electric kettle on the road IMO.
"I don't see why it couldn't be bigger... comments" It roughly takes 6 minutes of room temp 150cc water at 150watts to reach coffee temperature (fact check my joules and specific heat of water calculation). If you want more cc's of water, it will take a linear amount of time to heat, plus additional amount of time to drip, plus more space in the device. Someone had to draw the technology line at all of those variables to come up with that cute little 150cc coffee maker.
@@geuros at 150w you're already liable to pop fuses on some cars. Those little cigarette lighter ports usually get a 10-15amp fuse, and this does 12.5 or so
@@clard52 Yeah. You could also have it wired directly to your battery for more amps but installing would be involved enough that it wouldn't sell very well.
I would say it's down to price. It's a gimmick Christmas present for people that like coffee. It's probably not going to get used much. In reality you would make coffee at home and put in a thermos or park up and go to a coffee shop or just have a can of coke.
It seems to me that the biggest issue with brewing in a car would be getting water to boil. I'd go with one of the Spardar or Uniox boilers, an Aeropress, a travel mug, and a decent hand grinder (probably a C2, which seems to be at the price/performance sweet spot).
I keep my camping pourover setup in my car pretty much all the time, so I guess that counts. Hand grinder, butane stove, gooseneck kettle, plastic pourover filter, insulated metal mug. You probably don't want to be dealing with boiling water over a gas flame on the dashboard at a stoplight, but out the tailgate on the side of the road it's perfect.
Just wanted to say that I enjoy your videos on a regular basis, but this video was an absolute delight. I especially liked the mustache + glasses and then the Harry's transition 🤣
This is the second video of James' I've watched this evening where the final analysis is "a thermos of coffee brewed at home is probably better than this". Ok James, prey tell, what is the best Thermos?? :)
I randomly picked up a weird, retro looking light blue and red thermos from Ikea because it was $6 or something, and it actually works about as well as my Thermos briefcase bottle... but is too fat for a cupholder. Miir makes a good travel mug that keeps coffee hot an annoyingly long time, so I bring a worse one I can drink from because otherwise I'm burning the lining of my mouth off until 4-5 hours into a drive.
I didn’t know what to think of you before but now I know you are all about full commitment. This get up and video proves with no doubt you are a true dedicate to coffee.
So first, the cinematography in this is amazing! I can’t imagine how long you worked on editing the lighting and advertisement. Secondly I could see myself using this. I live in Wisconsin in the United States, and my in-laws live in Washington State which is around a 25 hr. trip if you want to drive which I have done a few times. Traveling across the western states means you aren’t going to run into many good coffee shops. With that said, a jet boil and basic pour over equipment might be a better option, but this is certainly very compact in comparison.
I think a camping stove is the first thing that comes to mind for those of us who've used similar equipment. I've definitely made more than a few cups using a bialetti and msr pocket rocket
I did watch & listen but my eyes teared up from laughter which continued through the Harry's commercial...absolutely brilliant! A bright spot on such a dull day...
James, you did mention that the comment section was the best/least intrusive way to get to you, so here goes. If you have a few minutes, do watch "Tribal People Try Coffee For The First Time" here on YT. It's quite an insightful bit of talk about the role of a drink on people's lives. The actual coffee content in it is a bit weak and I wish they had served them some proper beans, but the strong feelings people associate with their preferred drink really do shine through.
So a little math an average in car lighter port is 12v (Battery medium voltage) and supposed to be rated up to 10amps. That means it is only able to produce about 120w of power at lower charge. However when running most cars should have the battery at closer to 13.6-14 5v. (Alternator power being fed in.) So that is 10a x 13.6-14.5v = 136-145w of rated power draw on a near full charge battery or running car port. So at the 120w for a lower battery to raise 1 cup (8oz room temperature water (64f to 200f) it would take about 11 minutes. (Without counting any thermal losses or needing to heat up the coffee maker itself.) At the 136-145w of a full battery it will take between 9.5-9 minutes to heat that cup of water. If 100% efficient (which it is not going to be) it will take 21wh to heat that water in energy. The average car battery (Lead Acid) is supposed to be 1323wh. Divid that by the 21wh for brewing and we have about 64.50 cups of coffee we could brew with a full charge. (For 8oz water from 64f to 205f.) However taking the much more conservative cost of 35wh to brew that cup for losses in the electrical system and thermal losses to the maker while brewing and such... We more realistically could probably brew about 40 (8oz) cups on a full charge. The 170w maker he uses would theoretically take 7.5 minutes in a perfect world for 8oz. But again most car lighters are only 10 amp and that means only a max of 145w. So unless your car is a 12.5a or 15a that maker could blow your fuses or cuase damage to the wiring with prolonged use.
The 2020 version being set in a drab urban car park, in a car too big for the parking space really hit the realism on the head
By the way -- that Harry's ad was better than any of Harry's own actual ads.

Why aren't we all talking about that car!!?? Holy crap, what a glorious thing.
we are now talking about the car
What car is it
@@drew2dee2 Aston Martin vantage I believe. I’m guessing 80s. Bond had one in the living daylights
Agreed, I love the Tesla Model X!
Unfortunately a speeding mini van totalled it.
well... at least now everyone knows how James won a world barista championship: with a lot of work.
This channel is amazing.
Exactly right! everything down to a T
1970s James is the sort of person that everyone calls chief
Lol
Aeropress and jet boil on the trunk or as you brits say “on the boot” is the fast way to make coffee anywhere with your car. I’ll admit definitely a bit difficult while driving.
We love this combo for backpacking and camping.
Bonnet dear boy.
I mean, if this isn’t what UA-cam was invented for then I don’t know what is. Perfect 👌🏼
,,It's more offensive than my mustache"
We love you, James
James, we do love you, and that mustache was great, although the idea of you shaving....you may have fashionably grey hair but you have the skin of a nine-year-old boy (and I say that in a sort of envious way)
The editing on this one is absolutely phenomenal, James.
I had no clue how much I needed this until now
the mustache?
@@Potato-adept obviously.
"It’s more offensive than my moustache" - James hits the truth every time.
And I can’t believe you didn’t put the car in ‘Park’ - the handbrake on 1970s cars were terrible!
Boring excuse - I was running the car's engine in an effort to preserve the battery/not have it die and this particular car has a quirk where sometimes it won't start in park, but only in neutral.
@@jameshoffmann Good old AML! Great video (as always).
@@jameshoffmann aston Martin's suffer from a fault of that generation where the sensor for the park fail due to poor wiring if you talk to aston Martin dealer or approved they should have the sensor or loom on shelf still as aston Martin have a heritage program to keep old astons going
I actually hate how well you suit that moustache. Do I hear Movember calling for James Hoffman to take part?
Holy shit man, your production values, subtle humour and creativity have always been outstanding, but this... *clap* * clap* *clap*
Why is hearing James say 'it's okay' so soothing?
Articulate British man tells you everything will be okay (ASMR)
"Its not your fault"
What a gorgeous moustache. Such symmetry. Such beauty. Art
Thermos full of hot water, ground coffee and an aeropress - perfection!
For longer trips, just add an inverter and a kettle.
Either that or a thermos of hot water and a Staresso!
PRE-GROUND COFFEE????? 😱😱😱
I bring my backpacking stove (Jetboil) and Aeropress and it is indeed perfection.
@@drmedwuast currently yes, but will be fixed next month with a new hand grinder purchase!
ok, so
1. i had no idea "in-car coffee makers were a thing
2. this video idea for this sponsor... brilliant!
Oh my! My mother had I believe that exact same kettle for in-car tea brewing. We'd set the water to boil, drive another 10 minutes, and by then it would be boiling merrily and tea could be made at the next stop. Very dangerous if it had spilled, thankfully it didn't.
This is a cinematic masterpiece
How much of the 70’s wardrobe did you have and how much needed to be sourced for the video?
Honestly, I had to buy everything in. The more shameful truth is how much I'm keeping in rotation going forwards.
@@jameshoffmann No shame in that game.
@@jameshoffmann Did you already have the Aston!?
@@jameshoffmann What's old is new again. No shame here.
The shoes looked really nice
I had an in-car coffee maker in around 1989, and it looked almost identical to the one James tested from 1979. I used to drive to London, which took about an hour (on a good day) and it took that long to heat a small cup of water to a usable temperature.
Pulling up in that Aston with that "Hey Baby" nod instantly took me right back to the 70's!!!
Ahhhh the memories...
I was 16 in 1979, and I think I got that very same creepy nod every day back then.
"More offensive than my mustache" FANTASTIC!!!
That mustache is right on the money too! I never did like that look, but it certainly was a sign of the times!!
And may I say -
BEST VIDEO YET
and
BEST COMMERCIAL EVER !!!
Groovy.
Just Groovy.
Thank You James for making me laugh so early in the morning!!! My day is now complete. ♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
I was much younger than that in 1979, and yeah, I got that very same creepy nod every day too. It was a different time. (Thankfully.)
even 70's advertising...
James, you are a genius
thank you for your content :)
"Welcome to the in-car coffee maker of tomorrow"
A barista that lives in your car.
Oh my god, that mustache! I'm dying!
First ad I didn't click through in forever. I actually called my wife over to watch the ad just because of your gray mustache. This video was great fun.
I'm so happy i found James' channel during quarantine. Thank you for doing your magic!
What a beautiful Aston. My worlds are colliding and i love it. James is one step away from being coffee bond.
Hoffman. James Hoffman.
I'm a simple man...
I see James with a moustache,
I click Like
Great video. Those retro effects were on point! I loved how the ad naturally segued into the modern era. Bravo!
You clearly got your money's worth with the SkillShare film making course! This is great. A definite Plan B for you if the world runs out of coffee.
This is absolutely beautiful. I never know what to expect from this channel and I'm always pleasantly surprised
Shoulda called it “coffee makers in cars making coffee”. ;-)
For my money, time, and tastebuds I would brew a FP and put it in a zojirushi.
Jetboil and Aeropress - making it while standing under the backdoor
"I don't see why it couldn't be bigger... comments" It roughly takes 6 minutes of room temp 150cc water at 150watts to reach coffee temperature (fact check my joules and specific heat of water calculation). If you want more cc's of water, it will take a linear amount of time to heat, plus additional amount of time to drip, plus more space in the device. Someone had to draw the technology line at all of those variables to come up with that cute little 150cc coffee maker.
sure we need more watts, that's it :D
@@geuros at 150w you're already liable to pop fuses on some cars. Those little cigarette lighter ports usually get a 10-15amp fuse, and this does 12.5 or so
@@clard52 Yeah. You could also have it wired directly to your battery for more amps but installing would be involved enough that it wouldn't sell very well.
Most in car points have between 120-180 W in C segment cars so the coffee maker would stay at that wattage to serve the largest market!
I THINK JAMES just wanted to wear that quaint jacket and dashing loafers
Dude, you wear the 70s look pretty damn well!
James is such a Hipster
But he’s actually a cool Hipster
This is the second video of James' I've watched this evening where the final analysis is "a thermos of coffee brewed at home is probably better than this". Ok James, prey tell, what is the best Thermos?? :)
I love my Yeti 20 Oz thermos. It holds hot for a 12 hour drive
NYC cabbie here. I can’t work without my Stanley thermos. My shift is usually 12 hours.
You can't go wrong with a Thermos brand thermos.
I use a bodum insulated travel French press and a thermos of water works a treat and no electric faffery
Everyone's a gangster until James wear a moustache.
Today's sponsor was very well integrated. Good job, sir. :) And now I want a good car coffee brewer...
I did watch & listen but my eyes teared up from laughter which continued through the Harry's commercial...absolutely brilliant!
A bright spot on such a dull day...
Therapist: 70s moustache James can't hurt you, he isn't real
Me watching this video: 👁️👄👁️
Damn, it’s like you went back in time and stole my comment idea 😑
(Alternator power being fed in.)
So that is 10a x 13.6-14.5v = 136-145w of rated power draw on a near full charge battery or running car port.
So at the 120w for a lower battery to raise 1 cup (8oz room temperature water (64f to 200f) it would take about 11 minutes. (Without counting any thermal losses or needing to heat up the coffee maker itself.)
At the 136-145w of a full battery it will take between 9.5-9 minutes to heat that cup of water.
If 100% efficient (which it is not going to be) it will take 21wh to heat that water in energy.
The average car battery (Lead Acid) is supposed to be 1323wh. Divid that by the 21wh for brewing and we have about 64.50 cups of coffee we could brew with a full charge. (For 8oz water from 64f to 205f.)
However taking the much more conservative cost of 35wh to brew that cup for losses in the electrical system and thermal losses to the maker while brewing and such...
My grandparents had one of these and i ran the battery flat on their gold Ford Granada mucking about with it! Was about 1982 and I was 8 🤣
