I built 22 of the 5 framers this weekend. Will be painting them this week. I hope I catch a bunch of swarms here in south Alabama. Thanks for the video. It's very informative.
Hi Woolie, Nice Video. I build my swarm boxes almost same like yours. I put a bit of foam over the top bars that the not bang to each other and 2 screws in the side of the lid. Then it can not come loose when you take them out of a tree. I also put round entrance doors on the entrance hole. The round doors have vent holes. It makes the hive easy to close. I hope you will catch a lot of swarms. Kind regards Jacques from the Netherlands.
Thanks for watching. im just to cheap to put those on i just stuff a napkin in the entrance. i also put 2 screws in the back to keep the lid on. beautiful country was there multiple times in the late 1980s.
Excellent! I’m going to be doing some vids on swarms this year as well. But its my first year and i have NO IDEA what’s going to happen. I appreciate the tip on removing any points. I think I’ll go through mine again and check for that. My boxes are similar to yours as well. 38 liters basically. Wishing you much success this year my friend! God bless
Now I need to rethink the 14 I built last summer 🙃 they're basically square, double deep 5 frame boxes, with the entrance on the big side 🤔 I should find a sander that fits inside and rub the inside with beeswax after hitting it with my propane torch 🤓 painted with some Adaptive color I found at Lowe's. Kinda greenish, grayish, brownish 🤔
I ended up making 24 of these traps. Put 14 of them out a month ago and nothing. Cked them today for the 5th time and had 3 swarms. I am on cloud nine. Free bees.
Congratulations. Where are you located? now remember where you caught the swarms at for next season. It's all about location location location. I've not had a bee visit the trap and moved it across the road or down the tree line 30 yards and a swarm move in in less than 2 days. There's more to it than meets the eyes.
Isn't 40 liters about the size of a typical 10 frame deep Langstroth? I never have to build swarm traps. I simply use old standard size langstroth boxes. In it I put a single frame w/ old brood comb & 1 quick squirt of Swarm Commander. I caught an average of 3 swarms PER box last year. What is FAR more important than the size or shape of the box is WHERE you put it. It's 100x more important. Placed in the right location, you could put a cardboard box (size a ream of paper comes in) on a fence post.
I have never used 10 frame equipment but my understanding is that it's a little over 40 liters. I also have found that bees like the cavity like a tree not horizontal like in a 10 frame box.
In my experience doing bee removals (professionally), bees don't give a twit about shape or direction. They'll go up, down, left, right, or diagonally. So long as the volume and entrance size are "right".
doing removals is totally different than baiting bees to a box you have hung in a tree on a post or just sat on a stump. the direction of the hole the placement of the brood comb type of lure ect matters. im competing with these other places. the way i do my bait hives maximizes my chances to catch the swarm over the other places they could go to. anyone can hang a trap anyone can get lucky and catch a swarm but to consistently catch 25+ swarms every year takes knowledge prep the right box orientation ect ect and a lure that works better than lemongrass oil or swarm commander. as i continue this series i will show people how to find bees not just BLINDLY hang traps and HOPE to catch bees. i have done my share of removals but not professionally and i agree they will build in anything if what they are REALLY looking for is not available. thanks for watching
That looks great! Thanks for the "PSS" tip. Now I'm going to go out and double check all of the swarm traps that I made within the last 4 or 5 months and make sure that I didn't happen to overlook anything sharp or pointy inside. I wouldn't have even thought of that had you not mentioned it. Question for you though. Did you make the stencil for the camouflage look? Have you experimented with different colors and camouflage patterns, and this is just what works best?
I will be covering all of those topics as the series unfolds like and subscribe click the bell so you do not miss any of this important information. Missing just 1 item could be the difference in free bees and an empty trap
I will be posting the next video sometime today showing you how to find honey bees so you are doing more than taking a shot in the dark and just hanging traps. Thanks for watching
Great video, I’m in my 3rd year as a beekeeper and looking to start building some traps I have a couple of questions to ask 1. The paint job I love it do you have the pattern to share and color information 2. Above you gave the dimensions for a six frame and mentioned that the second numbers are for a five frame can you explain that I didn’t understand it and 3. I would need to use straps not nails can the boxes be refitted to accommodate that issue. Thanks again for the help Manny
the stencil is from amazon which is long gone. i changed the description for 2 separate plans so its not confusing. the straps can be run through the back of the tap. start the video at the 1:45 mark to see the back mounting of the trap. thanks for watching,
depends on a couple of things. is the trap brand new if so i would leave them in it till july and then move it so they propolis the trap all up put bits of wax on the walls the more it smells like a hive the better. if its an old trap i leave them there till i see pollen coming in and then move them and immediately put up another trap. i have 1 location that i get 3 4 or 5 swarms at every year so i take those down the day i find its occupied.
my tops are made to fit multiple box sizes. i use 5 6 8 frame equipment and my traps are 7 frames so the lids cover all of them. they are 17 wide x 23 long
they are in the description section not the comments This is how I build a swarm trap I use 5 and 6 deep frame traps. I lost track at 28 swarms in 2018. 2 Qty. 19 1/4 x 16 2 Qty. 9 1/4 x 15 3/8 or 7 1/2 x 15 3/8 2 Qty. 2 x 10 1 Qty. 18 1/4 x 9 1/4 or 18 1/4 x 7 1/2 Second numbers are for the 5 frame trap.
You have to buy a stencil off Ebay or Amazon or wherever you find one you like then put the base coat on let it dry a few minutes put the stencil on and spray the next color let that dry a few minutes then move it 3/4 of an inch and do,your 3rd color.
Thanks for posting. I'm going to build it like yours. Question though. Should that bottom piece be 18 1/2 Long instead of 18 1/4? Or is that extra quarter inch for an air gap at the bottom? I didn't see a gap in the video. Basing this on the 19 1/4 wide back and front, minus the two 3/8 sides equals 18 1/2 for the bottom to fit in. Thanks.
@@WoolieBsApiary thanks for the reply. Okay maybe it's just me and I'm doing the math wrong or thinking of assembling it differently. But if I take 19 1/4 front/back, and put the 7 1/2 sides inside of that, I get 19 1/4 minus the 3/8 * 2 is equal to 3/4, gives 19 1/4 - 3/4 is 18 1/2.
@@WoolieBsApiary Hey Willie, I can build the box no problem, I'm just trying to help you out and make sure you got the measurements in your description correct for others. For me I got it covered. Thanks again for posting.

Big fan of Tom Seeley, not only does he do the experiments, he shows you how hid did them, gives you confidence in the results.
A lot of good points especially the pointy objects that could kill the queen
It's that time again. I use the eco-safe on my hives built last year and are holding up fine. Knock on wood. I like your cammo scheme, good idea.
