Check out Pi Core player software. The players use Logitech Media Server to stream from a windows computer hosting the media server. They can be synced so that one stream is synchronized to multiple players. I run several on Raspberry Pi zero W with a generic DAC from Amazon. I have pi 3-bs and 2-bs. Some using on-board audio port, some with the same DAC. Some on wifi and some ethernet. You can play unique streams to each or have 1 or more syncs. Pi Core Player is read only, so if you unplug a pi without shutdown, the card does not get corrupted. I have been running 7 or so with no issues for about 3 years. Best of all, the pi's are all headless and controllable using any web enabled device using a number of apps or web browser. the icing on the cake is that Home Assistant automatically recognized and loads the players.
You can also check out forked-daapd for multi room. It supports streaming to airplay and Chromecast devices, and lets you run it as a service, so you can use the pi for other programs as well.

I was going to mention MPD here. Its the old and known solution for just this!
I don't know. I've seen amps for pi zero, so the pi3 must have enough capacity. Franck was looking at creating an add-on for Hassio but I think it was going to be a challenge.
So, say you had a functional 8 track stereo receiver, with phono in, with 8 ohm speakers. Could this 20W amp be connected into the phono in to convert it into a Bluetooth radio? Would your phone control the Pi volume via Bluetooth like any device, with the receiver adding more volume on top?
Don't know if you will even read this, or if anyone else has asked/mentioned.... Maybe the reason why you struggle with the USB is that with the HAT you use, is that the pi isn't getting enough current for the USB? (just spitballing)
Is it possible to have Volumio playing a playlist (songs) and then have HA trigger the sound effect (door bell ring for example) AND have Volumio return to the songs it was playing before it was interrupted by the HA triggered sound effect?
I'm looking for a video of adding snapcast to a system like this but not found one yet. Anyone point me at one? Volumio installed and working well, playing through the DAC but adding the snapcast plugin seems to mute the DAC output.
Thanks! it only plays on speakers connected to the audio output jack on the pi. At least the last time I checked there wasn't a way to play the same song at the same time on separate Volumio devices. I have mine connected to speakers that are in the ceiling through the whole house, so for me it is multi-room, but not in the way Amazon Echo can do multi-room.
Can I stream Audio from my phone (any Audio file or youtube sound or whatever) to the Hifi Berry via the BT functionallity of my RPi 3 while Volumio is running?

Great video as always. Just curious, can you send tts from Hassio to the Volumio device to be spoken out of whole house audio or whatever the Volumio is connected to? Thanks
Audio from volumio plays on just what the volumio is connected to. So if you don't have the volumio connected to your house speakers it won't play there. I still don't know about tts with volumio though. Someone said mpd player, but I don't know anything about that (yet!)
The TTS can be fixed very simple: Here my configuratio - platform: volumio name: livingroom musicbox host: 172.16.1.4 port: 3000 - platform: mpd name: livingroom_tts host: 172.16.1.4 With this the MPD can use TTS, the volumio platform is not supporting tts some of the reason. I dunno it was mentioned in the comment section, I have not checked. the MPD won't load the playlists, but possible it does not work just only me. :D
First of all Kudos for all you videos, you have inspired me. This is a great video, however I wanted to ask about the battery and charger solution, can you expand a bit on this? Thanks
Thanks! sure. Since the Amp Hat takes 12v with a pretty standard barrel connector and I had a 12v battery pack laying around, I plugged the 12v battery pack into the Amp hat and it worked great. I can't say how long it would last. To recharge it I just use the charger that came with the battery pack.
Also, what if you run from pi audio jack into a receiver before it gets to the speakers - does that improve the audio quality without using a pi hat first? (I'm planning on hooking a Volumio pi up to the receiver/sound system for my living room)
I've heard of picoreplayer but haven't tried it. Volumio was a recommendation from a friend and worked well for playing local MP3's, which was my goal.
70V amplifiers are what are used in lobbies and theme parks and hospitals and grocery stores to be able to connect a butt load of speakers to one L/R channel. So, in order to deliver a signal to all of the speakers in our lobby, we have to run the Pi3 into a 70V amplifier (19" rack mount) but if there was a Pi3 version that was smaller, like the Extron half-rack 70V amps, we could use that instead.

I'm running Volumio on a Pi Zero W with a PhatDAC DAC connected to an amp. It runs fine, although it is a bit slow to catalog big network drives and occasionally I have to manually refresh the Now Playing screen on the web client, but the playback of mainly Flac files is flawless for me.
Thanks i will give it a try, i will be able to tie to one of the good computer speaker s that come with bass box so not planning to get the amp hat. unless you guys tell me it does a better digital to analog than just connecting the audio out to a std analog amp. so once the files are indexed it operated normally...or does it slow down often on a pi-zero ?
@@DrZzs Hi, I must be lucky because all I did was burn the image, fired it up and it worked a treat. Took a little experimentation to get it reading my Linux shares, but that's down to my lack of Linux know how :)
It's really difficult to troubleshoot over comments. The best place to get answers to your questions is on the discord channel. Check the video description for more details.
no. I don't believe it uses the bluetooth on the rpi. It's possible that there is a plugin for it that I don't know about. But it connects to your wifi so if your phone is also on the wifi you can connect to Volumio that way.
DRZZS can the media select service in home assistant Can be used to play music in Google home Speakers? If yes how do you do that. Wr is the mo3/flac file to be stored? Please guide
have you found any answers to this? I haven't tried playing music much on my google mini, but my few attempts have failed anyway. Keep trying and let me know if you find the solution.
Yes @DrZzs. Sucessfully done { "entity_id": "media_player.living_room_speaker", "media_content_id": "RASBERRY PI IP :PORT/local/audio/Rooster.mp3", "media_content_type": "audio/mp3" } Rooster.mp3 Stored in Hassio/Config/www/audio folder. Create Folder name www & audio if it dosent exist. Restart HA. Above code will work.
sup doc... this could be great as an addition to an over the shelf soundbar! possibly with an optical audio output instead of an amp. add in network attached storage and you could have a fairly strong "smart" soundbar. also cant wait to see you do a thermostat, hint hint, wink wink.
That is a great idea! There are pi-hats that have optical output. I think you can run volumio on a pi zero too... I've got the basic parts together for a thermostat. It'll be part of the maker faire game. Same principles, different application.
Great video Doc. But if volumio could cast to Airplay speakers or Google cast, that would be even better!!!! Unfortunately, all research points to not capable :( (at least at this point)
Ops, sorry, i spoke too soon,SornDP is referring to cast from iOS to Volumio. I am looking to cast from Volumio to "cast" devices. this way can use V. as whole house media player. in theory i think it's possible, need to overwrite OUT device to CAST, but probably way too much work, and definitely over my head :( Thank you anyway for checking on it.
looks like it is active by default. I'll try to connect to my volumio through airplay when I get home to see if there's anything else required for the setup.
Hi! Quick answer is yes. The RF sensors need the RF bridge to work with Home Assistant. I just did a video about the RF bridge a week or so ago. Here's the link if you haven't seen it. If you have specific questions about it let me know: ua-cam.com/video/OfSbIFIJPuc/v-deo.html
Could you make video about switch that also checks the status of the switches and display it on the same switch (I mean switch that is also light and says it is on or off depending on real state not ) and how to make momentary switch. (Ass long you pressing it send command)
do you use the mopidy addon? I'm trying to figure out the link between the mpd player and volumio. Can you explain it a little for me? Thanks!

you just have to set up a MPD www.home-assistant.io/components/media_player.mpd/ media_player with the host value set to the volumio ip address no nead for plugins to find this media player you can set the value name to make it easyer to find. hears a copy of my config. - platform: mpd host: name: kitchen - platform: volumio host: port: 3000 restart home-assistant and send tts to media_player.kitchen for my config.
I'll have to tinker with it. I used to have it working where I could even play a playlist with a button but that was a while back. I'll have to look at what I had. I'm not even sure it would still work.
Nope! We use spotify with it every day. Infact there is even a fix that allows you to finally import your spotify playlist. I can't find the link right now. Look through the comments it might be posted here somewhere. If not, let me know and I'll look. Maybe someone emailed it to me. I can't remember now, but I did it and it worked!

I know Franck looked at it, at least briefly. It seemed like it would be difficult. I agree with the idea though. I'd love to see a more integrated media player for Home Assistant that runs on the same pi and uses the audio output. There is an add-on that'll let you play spotify from the audio on the pi. It essentially creates an available device that spotify can connect to and play from (which is the HA pi).
=) pretty sweet. Though in my setup i'm switching to actual chromecast audio's.. as my pi1 is slow and this sometimes doesnt work. And unfortunately you cant use this in a multiroom setup :( Great for a boombox setup though.
ya, that is a bummer. And without SSL, there are a bunch of sites you can't use with too. :( maybe someday there will be a way to work around that issue.
Sorry. I didn't mean to diminish the importance of mp3 or flac. Our family has probably become too reliant on streaming services. That's a great thing about Volumio, is not needing Pandora or Spotify.
ah, I just started messing with Plex too. It looks like HA integration is really complete with Plex. I'd like to call a service to play a video clip on the tablet in our kitchen. That'd be one step above playing the audio clip.
Im not sure if you are asking me or David, but I have a Dell poweredge r510 with 8, 3tb drives in Raid 6 ( 2 parity drives for data protection). This server runs open media vault as the OS. This allows me to use this a Home storage server for all of my media files but also pictures videos etc. It also is a back up solution for out portable devices as well.
David or Andy, how's Plex working for u? I tried to use it on synology (for lower power consumption) to create whole house music server (on the cheap), but it was a bit laggy on web interface on the tablet, but it could stream to different google homes/mini speakers. Maybe I should just setup PC server for it, but not really sure about power use, especially if I use it once in the while. Looking for just music server.... Any recommendations???
I have to say I was too existing when I saw the title but then I was disappointed.. sure this is cool, but I was hopping for something that can compete with Sonos. I want a client for my pc, so I can use my pc speakers too, and the ability to play music on multiple devices at the same time.
maybe Plex will do that for you. I don't know about multiple devices, but with Plex you have a server and clients and the music (or videos) plays on the client. So you could hear it on your PC or phone or TV. With Volumio the sound comes out of the pi audio output only (as far as I know).
Thanks man. I've started playing with Plex. I'll keep your goals in mind when I'm checking it out. I'm hopefully it'll be another great media player option :)
For what I've seen, Plex is a great tool for media consumption. Personally I am thinking to try Kodi first. Mostly because it's opensource. I also found some ways to add meta-data so its more like Netfix. Using SQL (not exactly sure how this works yet, its in my plans though) it can automatically start playing a movie from where you stopped watching, even if you switch client. You just need to have a "server" to store all of the data and the movies. I'm trying to find a cheap way to build a nas-server that can easily be upgraded in the future. I found a lot of ideas in the DataHoarder subreddit. I just don't have enough time right now. Nor any extra money to buy a server.
Yiannis Spanos I used to be a Kodi guy (previously XBMC) but switched to Plex. It's extremely good. I run a server for Plex, movies and tv are stored on my NAS. I also have a silicondust HDHomeRun so I can record free to air television - full dvr functionality with program guide. Once you go plex, you'll never return to Kodi. My daughter even uses the Plex client on her iPad with the offline support to download movies for watching during trips.
I was surprised to see some of the higher end dac/amps at $150. There are cheaper options even but they aren't made specifically to fit on top of the pi.
I have Volumio running on an original Pi 1 with the audio coming out of a cheap HDMI to VGA/audio adaptor plugged into my hifi. So it would probably run on a Pi Zero making it all substantially cheaper.
Sorry, I bought it years ago (when Volumio was still called RaspyFi). It was something like this one goo.gl/ww2duY but mine does not have a usb power connector.
Nothing personal here but, could we lose the talking "head" on your videos? I'd just rather watch the screens with the information maybe in a larger format without the floating head. Thank you. No offence and I really do want to subscribe but the floating head kinda gets in the way.
ya, I've pretty much stopped with the floating head. It was fun for a while, but just like my mullet in high school, I've kinda grown out of it :) I haven't done it in the newer videos except for a few seconds at the end.
ok real feedback here. sorry it's negative but it's honest. this is nauseating to me. is sounds so robot, but so human, not sure , such a obnoxious combination. really don't know anything about the content.... just impossible to listen to it and retain my sanity :(

@@DrZzs Hi, I must be lucky because all I did was burn the image, fired it up and it worked a treat. Took a little experimentation to get it reading my Linux shares, but that's down to my lack of Linux know how :)
Wonder if it's compatible with bluetooth speakers? by adding a USB bluetooth adapter?
If i add a 3.5 waveshare screen hat to RaPi..how to configure DrZ
It's really difficult to troubleshoot over comments. The best place to get answers to your questions is on the discord channel. Check the video description for more details.
Impossible!!!! I try but there is no way to configure wifi net before.
Can i store all my music direct in the device or i have to have some kind of NAS or external usb storage?
You can store your own music on the sd on the pi, or on a usb drive connected to the pi, or on a network shared drive. Whichever is easier for you.
@@DrZzs , thanks for the answer, and can be controlled by an app in a tablet?
What if i need to stream an external listenlive link
is there a way to connect it without ethernet
How do you switch Volumio off and not corrupt your sd card?
Shutdown in the settings menu.
Can we use it to stream music from phone via Bluetooth?
Yes @DrZzs. Sucessfully done

Rooster.mp3 Stored in Hassio/Config/www/audio folder. Create Folder name www & audio if it dosent exist. Restart HA. Above code will work.
is this compatible with Logitech's squeezebox platform? meaning, can i use sqeeze apps to control volumio remotely with a phone?
great question. I'm sorry I don't know the answer.
Can Volumio work with a bluetooth speaker on PI4?
Yes, but you will need the premium account.
sup doc... this could be great as an addition to an over the shelf soundbar! possibly with an optical audio output instead of an amp. add in network attached storage and you could have a fairly strong "smart" soundbar. also cant wait to see you do a thermostat, hint hint, wink wink.
That is a great idea! There are pi-hats that have optical output. I think you can run volumio on a pi zero too...
I've got the basic parts together for a thermostat. It'll be part of the maker faire game. Same principles, different application.
lol doc. i know ya have the basic parts of a thermo put together, i modeled the wall cover after all.
i told you i was one of your subs brother. i actually watch most of your videos
Great video Doc. But if volumio could cast to Airplay speakers or Google cast, that would be even better!!!! Unfortunately, all research points to not capable :( (at least at this point)
There is an Add-on to allow airplay with Chrome-cast devices. I haven't tried it but that might give you want you're looking for.
check out SornDP's comment. I guess there is a way to cast airplay to Volumio. I didn't know that was possible!
YES, exactly what i was looking for. i checked all ADDINS but did not see it. Will check SornDPs comment. THANK YOU!
Ops, sorry, i spoke too soon,SornDP is referring to cast from iOS to Volumio.
I am looking to cast from Volumio to "cast" devices. this way can use V. as whole house media player. in theory i think it's possible, need to overwrite OUT device to CAST, but probably way too much work, and definitely over my head :(
Thank you anyway for checking on it.
looks like it is active by default. I'll try to connect to my volumio through airplay when I get home to see if there's anything else required for the setup.
Always the same question...
How do you use RF Sensors? Is it Sonoff RF-Bridge?
Hi!
Quick answer is yes. The RF sensors need the RF bridge to work with Home Assistant. I just did a video about the RF bridge a week or so ago. Here's the link if you haven't seen it. If you have specific questions about it let me know:
ua-cam.com/video/OfSbIFIJPuc/v-deo.html
Could you make video about switch that also checks the status of the switches and display it on the same switch (I mean switch that is also light and says it is on or off depending on real state not ) and how to make momentary switch. (Ass long you pressing it send command)
I'll sure try. I'm planning eventually to build some of these:
github.com/aderusha/HASwitchPlate
Nice! Thanks for all of your content! ULTRA helpfull!
If you set up a mpd media_player you can use text to speak to send messages to the player
I hadn't heard of mpd. I'll have to look into that. Thanks!
do you use the mopidy addon? I'm trying to figure out the link between the mpd player and volumio. Can you explain it a little for me? Thanks!
you just have to set up a MPD www.home-assistant.io/components/media_player.mpd/ media_player with the host value set to the volumio ip address no nead for plugins to find this media player you can set the value name to make it easyer to find.
hears a copy of my config.
- platform: mpd
host:
name: kitchen
- platform: volumio
host:
port: 3000
restart home-assistant and send tts to media_player.kitchen for my config.
Björn sweet! I’ll try that today. Thanks!

Do you know a way of sincronize spotify with home assistant? I have a problem: "INVALID_CLIENT: Invalid redirect URI"
I'll have to tinker with it. I used to have it working where I could even play a playlist with a button but that was a while back. I'll have to look at what I had. I'm not even sure it would still work.
Great instructions, but the floating head thing is kinda disturbing...
Is spotify still broke for this?

Maybe we could get a Volumio Hassio addon... :-)
Now have they refined USB bug??DrZ 2023?
I’m not sure. I haven’t updated this in years.
Hey Zz, are you a Christian or other religion? i noticed "Worldly Music" as a folder name?!
I guess he means world music by that, ie traditional music from different cultures
could be, but he did hit like on my comment...
@@rhys.davieswork Christians don't listen to the Devil's Music :-D
Having to edit your yaml, means it could be easier!
For spotify you can also use:

Sweet!
I've had people ask that exact question but I didn't know if it was possible. Thanks.
=) pretty sweet.
Though in my setup i'm switching to actual chromecast audio's.. as my pi1 is slow and this sometimes doesnt work. And unfortunately you cant use this in a multiroom setup :(
Great for a boombox setup though.
Iframe doesn't work when you have your home assistant protected with https and your volumio isn't to bad.
ya, that is a bummer. And without SSL, there are a bunch of sites you can't use with too. :(
maybe someday there will be a way to work around that issue.
The floating disembodied head is a bit distracting, otherwise good tutorial
Thanks
It was a phase. I'm over it now. :)
Your USB key issue may be due to a power supply that is not strong enough.
I don't think MP3 or Flac are as ancient as you make it out to be.
Sorry. I didn't mean to diminish the importance of mp3 or flac. Our family has probably become too reliant on streaming services. That's a great thing about Volumio, is not needing Pandora or Spotify.
looks cool, but i have a dedicated dell server that just does plex
Yep same here.
ah, I just started messing with Plex too. It looks like HA integration is really complete with Plex.
I'd like to call a service to play a video clip on the tablet in our kitchen. That'd be one step above playing the audio clip.
What Dell server are you using?
Any recommendations???
of course like. But that Head like Frankinshtain )))))
Damn creepy!
Can you get youtube on this
Some loose their head, some...
Just to be clear, the video was great!
$50 CAD for an amp? Hmmm...
Do you have a link to the hdmi-audio adapter that you're using?
Sorry, I bought it years ago (when Volumio was still called RaspyFi). It was something like this one goo.gl/ww2duY but mine does not have a usb power connector.
Mmmmmmmm using a dac amp to listen to ogg.vorbis
Ah yess we do love some lossy compression i love hearing compression
Nothing personal here but, could we lose the talking "head" on your videos? I'd just rather watch the screens with the information maybe in a larger format without the floating head. Thank you. No offence and I really do want to subscribe but the floating head kinda gets in the way.
ya, I've pretty much stopped with the floating head. It was fun for a while, but just like my mullet in high school, I've kinda grown out of it :)
I haven't done it in the newer videos except for a few seconds at the end.
