Jacob Cayer Trial - Phase 2 - Disposition Hearing

- Update - August 12, 2020, 8:46 p.m.: This article was updated to reflect that the defendant was convicted of the murder in the first phase of trial. Now both sides must fight over whether he’s not guilty by reason of insanity or mental defect.
Wisconsin man Jacob Cayer, 30, remains on trial in the June 7, 2016 murders of his ex-girlfriend Sabrina Teague, 23, and her mother Heesun “Sunny” Teague, 64. You can watch in the player above. Phase two is set to begin Thursday, August 13, at 10 a.m. CT / 11 a.m. ET.
Prosecutors said the defendant went to the Teague home in a fit of rage after arguing with his father, killed Sunny, then ambushed Sabrina and her boyfriend Joel Kennedy when they arrived.
Jurors determined on Wednesday, August 12 that he did it. The question now is whether the defendant is mentally culpable under the law.
Cayer had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity or mental defect. It wasn’t necessarily the first choice of defense. In March, Brown County Judge Tammy Jo Hock denied a defense motions’ request to allow them to provide alternate suspects. They wanted to argue at trial that two other men kidnapped Cayer and framed him for the murders, according to WLUK. In the this version of events, the alleged motive was that these killers feared what Cayer might tell cops about other crimes. Hock said this motion lacked logic, and pointed out one of the alternate suspects were in jail at the time of the Teague murders.
At trial, the prosecution dismissed any suggestion that others could’ve been responsible, or Cayer’s story that people had kidnapped him and shoved him through the window of the residence.
“It’s absurd, right?” said Brown County Deputy District Attorney Dana Johnson in closing arguments.
The defendant’s mental state was a recurring element in the pre-trial hearings. The trial was delayed six times as the judge occasionally considered him incompetent to face the allegations against him. Dr. Christina Engen of the Wisconsin Forensic Unit had testified that she did not think Cayer understood the gravity of this case. The defendant thought he was going to be found innocent, and was “gleeful” when talking about the case, she said according to WBAY.
Sabrina’s sister Sarama Teague remembered the women as “more than the ex-girlfriend and the mother.” She told The Green Bay Press Gazette, “They were fully complex human beings, beautiful people, and I just want people to know that, and that I loved them.”
Their mother Sunny was a character, who arrived in the United States from South Korea in 1983, was proud of her barbecue chicken, had a quirky way of posing for pictures, and enjoyed telling the girls gossip about her Post Office coworkers, Sarama said. Heesun Teague had recently retired from USPS at the time of the murders.
Sabrina was going to start school at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College to become a social worker, her sister said. She dreamed of starting a half-way house.
“One of her dreams was opening a halfway house for troubled teens that didn’t have supportive homes,” Sarama said. “She believed nobody should ever suffer alone, and she was there for everybody.”

A state psychiatric hospital is in some aspects far worse then incarceration into a state correctional facility. Bottom line he will never see the light of day. Justice has been served.
Thank you! Ppl think flowers and dayrooms with arts and crafts. Fancy term for long term county jail basically!!
It is no fun there
Donnell Okafor If you are referring to SHU or the likes of, he would not be placed there unless there was an internal infraction or crime. Living in a psychiatric hospital is no walk in the park.
I do not think he will not be a candidate for going to the park with one can for activity
Cne
Either way, it's a life sentence. Was mentioned today where he's going is harder than a prison sentence.. The doctor mentioned it !!
Mariann Pasquale maybe!! He will manipulate them also!!!
Donnell Okafor - Have you worked or been confined to either?
Donnell Okafor which one and doing what?
Donnell Okafor - NYSDOCS and several psychiatric hospitals in NYC
Holly Joice - in many instances inmates have much more freedom than psychiatric patients.
All you guys.....I know you don't like it, but this was the right call. Watch him for 5 mins and you have to see it
Thank goodness for the judge having the last word here (hopefully)!
@Donnell Okafor correct, but the disposition was left to her.
I think her quick admittance to a mental health facility and lifetime imposed was the best decision. Not sure if parole is fully taken off the table but sounds like he'll be committed for a long while.
We have a state hospital for mentally ill/criminally insane close by. It's no picnic for patients or staff. JCayer is in for a rude awakening.
In England where I live he most likely would have been sent to Broadmoor which is a high security psychiatric hospital . I think the jury did get it right .
Tina I think many of the commenters are getting the wrong impression of what being sentenced to a psychiatric treatment facility is like. Just like Broadmoor is a high security hospital, so will the place Cayer will be going to. It won't be some rosy, comfortable hospital; it will house very dangerous men who have done the same as Cayer or worse!!
@Tina and your justice system lets murderers out daily after a very short time. Some after months or couple years.
R SR Really? I’ve not heard that before .
@@tina5203 There are documentaries about Broadmoor on UA-cam. It's not a cushy number at all. As for the comment about murderers being released after a couple years in England, we both kknow that's rubbish.
Geoff Poole yes I know . Don’t know where he got that from . And as for Broadmoor it’s not a soft option to prison . Probably worse in some ways !!
He was level headed enough to HIDE in the woods post crime. This jury is something! Wow! He sure pulled the wool over their heads! And he's sane enough to refuse to come to court today! Wow!!!
It's sad and honestly frightening how stupid people can be. Don't people think anyone?
Cayer's state, of course is in question, criminal or mental, it's up for the judge to decide.
@@deborahmerce318 No they FEEL. Our schools have taken the thinking out we teach how to take tests and tell everyone how the FEEL supersedes reality.
You’re an idiot
Regardless he will be locked up for life. Life in a mental institution will be no day at the beach for him, just like life in prison. In fact he'll probably have less quality of a life, he'll have less rights & freedoms in a mental institution than he would have had in prison.
That is exactly why judges should impose sentences not the jury this guy belongs in prison
I’m disgusted
I agree with everybody about the verdict. However, small comfort I know, but he will be furious that the jury have found him as nutty as a fruitcake!
@@nala9101 I know, as I too have a history of mental health issues. However, I would hate to be classified alongside Mr Cayer which was why I contemptuously referred to him as I did. It's a pity that Mr Cayer didn't recognise his own mental health problems and stay on his medication, then two people might still be alive.
Comment section is interesting. The state's own doctor became the defense's star witness in phase 2. State messed up... jury made the right choice. Clearly he's sick and no prison is worse than that kid's mind.
He isn’t a kid, he is a man!!
I agree. Jacob doesn't think he's mentally ill. He doesn't want to take medication. He will now have to when he's in the mental hospital . And I doubt he'll Ever be released given that he doesn't think he's ill and he doesn't want to take medicine.
The Jury must be naive.
I was very uncomfortable how he sounded so close to me while wearing earbuds. My skin started tingling in the bad way. 😬 be for-warned he violated my ears and spooked my soul.
Whaaaat!!! Nooooo he should have gone to prison
Have to accept the jury’s decision weather you like it or not. They decided. This is the way the justice system works.
Truth.
No I don't. I don't have to accept anything.
Its ok imagine him stuck there for the rest of his life with mental people...thats going to drive him crazy!! He deserved the death sentence but this is far worse....as he will suffer ...
The party's over, folks. Hopefully he'll spend the rest of his life in the institution. I wish he would go to prison but I didn't have a say. :/
Wait...WHAT?!
so what happens now he goes into a hospital manipulates the doctors they say oh you're okay and he gets the walk the streets eventually why isn't there a stipulation that if he's mentally saying he goes directly to prison
That is exactly how it should be. Great give him the treatment he asked for from the moment he asked for a psychiatrist in the hospital but then send him to prison for the rest of the term he received.
What a joke
Hopefully Jacob can eventually be cured, feel deep remorse, and one day make a meaningful contribution to society.
That ship has sailed.
NOT!
Didn’t the doctor say that he would be able to be released every six months when asked by prosecution, so the judge didn’t say if its life term I didn’t hear that. Don’t think justice was served.
I think he can apply for release every six months. Whether or not his application(s) would succeed is another matter.
He should have went to prison.
GOD WILL HAVE THE FINAL SAY!!!
I imagine a hospital is far better than PRISON. He will now enjoy nice meals, comfortable room and common areas.... recreation... lots of attention from staff, etc. I bet he even gets access to a computer and phone.
Most state run mental hospitals don't have the money for those things. He will be on a maximum security wing, like prison. And speaking of other inmates/patients he will be housed in Mendota, the same place Ed Gein was housed until his death. So, while you are exercising your imagination, imagine an entire ward of people just like this guy and Ed, together, everyday, no breaks, no going outside, none of that.
@Jessica Belle DuPont that's BS. He knew what he was doing. What a joke.
@Jessica Belle DuPont yes you can. It's happened before.
You have no idea what a high security mental hospital is like...
don't forget A/C....most prisons only have a/c in the offices. no smoking,
Holy SMOKES 😳😯🤦🏻♀️ WoWoWowoW!!!
I almost choked on my ice cream when they he wasn't responsible.
So then he will be able to have parole one day??????
that's the whole reason he didn't show up today because she knew he was going to be found guilty ain't go to prisons good luck to the medical staff don't turn your back on this guy and good luck to all the female patients but he's going to manipulate
ARE YOU FREAKIN KIDDING ME😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡
What is this hearing for now?
Zulu Zeit Incorrect. He is guilty but not responsible by reason of insanity. The judge corrected the defense attorney on the video prior to this one.
I literally cried at the leniency of the sentence. Feel sorry for Sabrina and heesun.
Waw, waw, waw from the defense attorney? I'm not prepared because I'm soooooo busy? Get another career!
A young Damocrap, protesting.
Wisconsin judicial system is broken.
The defense aren't arguing at all for him to be put away for life. They know he's guilty as f@CK.
I knew it.
The prosecution in this case seemed lazy. They missed so many opportunities to create a narrative that showed his thought process during and post crime. Blood on bike not tested, Bike upside down as to be repaired during getaway etc etc
Life
BS
That man went to kill.
He should be jn prison
The whole show was well planned by the lawyers. The best magic trick was when the defense attorneys argued that Cayer thought he was not insane. Liar Liar, it's a shame.
So life in the hospital,?
Yes.
Wow
I think he's going where he belongs. I also think unfortunately he will be released at some point, maybe a long time in the future.
"Lectric Chair". bye.
😲😲😲😲😲😲😲😱😱😱😱
What a Joke!!!!!
Cushy hospital for life
It seems like that, but those hospitals are not easy places to be.
