VIEWERS OF THE MYFORDBOY! Who are you and why are you here? I'm an electrical engineer from Germany and have picked up general shop work as a hobby! I do a little woodworking, repairs and have since got into metalworking! I've bought and old CNC mill from the 80's that I'm giving some new life... I enjoy the peace and quiet in the videos - it's giving the skill and attention to detail in the work the room they deserve. Also always love a good pattern making and casting!
I have had a long-term fascination with steam engines. Late one night, I stumbled on a series of videos of Myfordboy machining and building a working model steam engine. I was hooked. I took some courses on machining at our local community college and became a hobby machinist. The Myfordboy Steam Engine was my first "serious" machining project. Building that project was one of the most satisficing things I've ever done. ua-cam.com/video/UtisLh_H4d4/v-deo.html
I sell guns and whiskey to the Comanches- here's a tip; never sell bad whisky to the Comanches. I'm looking for a less risky way to earn a living, myfordboy seems to be doing O.K. and he still has his hair so...
i am a software and web developer, since i know about my self i had wish to smelt scrap metals and cast useful things out of them... had made one crude forge and made one tryout of it and casted simple rod, now i am building way better gas forge... i have FMD 3D printer and planning to buy SLA 3D printer soon and hope to make some castings for my projects... i am here to get inspired and to learn from others mistakes :)
My ford boy: I got tons of questions, but don’t wanna overwhelm you with petty stuff. I’ve decided to check out all your videos now because they’re answering a lot of it. Good content man. Thank you.
Hi Myfordboy, yes - more Ellie please. But all your videos are awesome so it will be hard to tire of them regardless of the content. This video was especially satisfying because you took us through every stage from 3D printed pattern to finished part. What a great start to a Wednesday! Stay well. Mike
I like your videos without talk & without that horrible musics too loud we usually have. Just the essential by writings. Thanks to your pedagogy of detailed examples I was able to make a little foundry by myself. Thank you so much and give us more of this unusual tram
Hello friends. let us be grateful to our friend who posted this video sharing knowledge. It doesn't cost anything to like and make a simple comment. It is the least we can do in gratitude for his work. thank you!
Yes please, need to know more about your Ellie, You made the wheels and hey presto you had a frame, engine, boiler Wow. Did you buy any of it as a kit? And what does the electric gismo do on the front ?
Sure would like to see more of Ellie. I have it up to the undercarriage stage but the wheels continue to lock up on me. I made the axles and cams twice and I have used a needle file on the linkages but it still jambs. I should have used lock screws to the cams instead I followed the instructions!
I've always been curious why you don't build a casting table. I'm not even sure where I got the design for mine, but it's basically a small sandbox on 4x4" legs, with a shelf under it for storage. There's a sliding work surface made of 2x2's that have gaps between them to allow excess sand to fall back into the bin. It works really nice, and saves the back and knees. :)
One of the few people I see doing casting wearing good protective gear. Surprised you did not sift in the first layer but them everything got machined.
I still use aluminium scrap for most things. I use this ZL12 for flywheels and anything i want harder. it's nearly as heavy as iron. I buy it here www.artisanfoundry.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=33&products_id=213
Definitely like to see more of Ellie's build!
I would love to see more of this locomotive
You're just a genius! Your hands are golden! Thank you for the video! 👍👍👍

I thought it was illegal to sell firewater to Comanches. Has something changed since I last saw a Western movie?

Always look forward to any of your work ! - love the format - captions, better than tv and no need for headphones 🤫

Yes please, need to know more about your Ellie, You made the wheels and hey presto you had a frame, engine, boiler Wow. Did you buy any of it as a kit? And what does the electric gismo do on the front ?
Everything was made, nothing bought. My Ellie has a reversing valve. The gizmo is the R/C servo to control it.
I used the same burner i designed for my traction engine model ua-cam.com/video/qsf_Cs00D40/v-deo.html
Knee pads! It pained me to see you kneel on concrete so much. haha And yes, more of Ellie would be great!
Yes, I would like to see more.
i want to see more of ellie
I'm saving this video for future reference. ❤
Knee pads! I wouldn’t be without my Snickers trousers, worked very much on my knees for much of my working life!
Spent my working life in Snickers too.
Sure would like to see more of Ellie. I have it up to the undercarriage stage but the wheels continue to lock up on me. I made the axles and cams twice and I have used a needle file on the linkages but it still jambs. I should have used lock screws to the cams instead I followed the instructions!
Adorable train
Of course, I need to see Ellie running under her own steam.
Wonderful, bro you rae a very good.
Absolutely.. more of Ellie!!
A very nice engine. It looks like it can run on 32 or 45 mm track.
I've always been curious why you don't build a casting table. I'm not even sure where I got the design for mine, but it's basically a small sandbox on 4x4" legs, with a shelf under it for storage. Good idea.
Another awesome video :)
Woaw.. amazing. Please show us more. Any specs for the alloy? The casting looks perfect no signs of porosity..how to make it perfect like this?
The alloy is 12% aluminium and 88% zinc. It is very hard and heavy. Make great flywheels.
@@myfordboy thank you. Can you please advise on how to reduce porosity?
ZL 12 needs no flux or degassing. For aluminium I degas with sodium carbonate and flux with a drossing flux.
great stuff - give us more
I might be missing something but I'm not sure why these were cast rather than just machined from bar stock, given the design...
You can do that. I did not have anything suitable so cast my own.
@@myfordboy fair enough.
Very Nice Craftsmanship
How durable has the ZL12 proven to be? I am interested in using it for wheels, but wonder how it will wear on aluminium or steel rails.
I have done enough running to comment but am not expecting any problems. It's a very hard metal.
Nice Work as always
One of the few people I see doing casting wearing good protective gear. Surprised you did not sift in the first layer but them everything got machined.
Yes please mate,
Great job
Could someone please tell me whether the plans for Ellie include the plans to build the boiler and engine? Kind regards, Dan.
The book includes everything to make the engine with a meths burner. I have made some changes and mine is gas powered,
@@myfordboy Thank you very much. It looks like a fantastic project and seems like a lot of your viewers would love to see more. Great content!
I would like to see more
Oh Yes, please ..more!
Yes Please from Everett Ontario Jerry
More of Ellie for certain!
interesting build
Have you gone right away from using scrap aluminium? Are the new ingots readily available at a reasonable price? Regards
I still use aluminium scrap for most things. I use this ZL12 for flywheels and anything i want harder. it's nearly as heavy as iron. I buy it here www.artisanfoundry.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=33&products_id=213
Thanks for sharing!
How do u make perfect casting without bubbles and impurities?
Degas and flux before pouring.
@@myfordboy is there a perfect ratio based on the weight of the aluminium? Or it doesn't matter?
@@travelfoodbusinessbestheyyono a teaspoon full works for me to an A 10 crucible.
@@myfordboy Thank you, I appreciate your reply.
Would like to see more - looks like it's too late to see you making the engine and boiler though.
Very nice
Why the rough surface finish, I wonder?
Sand too loose?
I would love to see lost wax casting etc.
I definitely would!
Can you melt down cast iron with a settling torch
You could melt a small blob but not a crucible full of scrap.
@@myfordboy could you make a video melting down a small piece of cast iron down
Please tell me what mix in a sand.?
