Jeez this video encapsulates so much that I love. As a kid feeling like the odd one out listening to ATCQ in Germany where everyone listened to hardcore . Listening to the samples Q-tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad Usedom their tracks lead me to so many great LPs and artists. Connecting Bobbi Humphrey‘s album to Chuck Rainey honestly blows my mind. I‘ve been obsessed lately with Steely Dan and even learned the Bassline on Peg, which is soooo much fun to play from the groovy verse to the stealthy and tight in slap bass in the chorus.
I‘ll never forget, that ATCQ and so many other Hip Hop artists don‘t just educate on life through their lyricism but they reflect their own life experience and personality through instrumentals and beats. Great Hip Hop is like an entrance for a rabbit hole lined with gems.
i love these 2 men and what they create. truly inspiring! seeing the midnight hour perform live was a life changing experience.
As a drummer, I thought this is spot on. Most people don't realize that to be really good, the drummer and bass player practice together quite a bit. The drums give a band the "metronome" while the bass connects the drums to the rhythm, which sets the tone of the color that the rest of the instruments bring together. Very cool video

Bass player looks great, nice bass and cool to see him mention Chuck Rainey but he's just a little too full of himself. Chuck Rainey himself comes off as a much more humble person despite being much more talented.

they are producers and side men I think not so much singers? I know Ali played with Tribe Called Quest and Lucy Pearl, 2 great bands.

Why do they got to make everything about color?
when he talks about color I don't think he's referring to skin color, he is talking about the guitar and keys color the music, like they make a blank canvas more colorful while the bass part and feel can make those colors sound different depending on how you approach the bass.
